When it comes to Dark Knight it's all about the Koto stuff (and yes I've seen them).

DC is just as bad about scale as Medicom but in the opposite direction. :monkey4
I sure wish they were doing these in scale with HT and Takara. At the least you could've done a really nice Joker bash that way.

The hosting site for those pictures are blocked where I work so I can't see the pictures and we always have threads about the new 13" figures so this was a good starting place for the discussion.

Hmmm... if they are indeed "Giant 1:6th scale" I may have to pass since I don't need another Jaw... I mean a giant Joker in the collection. I just hope Hot Toys comes through now!

Is it likely that Sideshow will have the Hot Toys ones? I was finally going to buy one of their Solid Snake figures, but cancelled because of all the weird problems. So, I've yet to own one of theirs, but will buy a cool Joker or Batman figrue.

if its hot toys, its very good bet sideshow will distribute it in the US... cant say for this though.. i dont know what the licensing rights are in the us...

on a side note.. i cant get big pics of the dcd jokerr/batman yet..but if the costumes can be removed, ill probably preorder them....untill ht announces their range of figures:lol

No, SSC won't distribute any HT product that originated from DC properties. At least that's how it's been in the past.

I do hope that HT is able to make figures from the new film... it'd be a shame if our only option for a licensed Ledger Joker is from DCD and 13" tall :monkey2

Can't wait to see better images... They look quite good there. If the Joker's head and cloths are good, easy convert to a 12" HT boddy, with some minor tailoring!

Why did they decide to make them 13" tall?

screamingmetal
03-05-2008, 06:28 PM
Interesting, those definitely look like they're on the 13" bodies, I don't see any reason why DCD would suddenly get the scale right.
Looking at the Leger Joker, the head looks too small for the body so I think a scale conversion over to a correct 1:6 bod might work out quite nicely.

But I'll wait for Hot Toys or Takara to make one myself.

So they would miss out on sales. I would have bought all their figures if they were 1/6th scale.

Aren't they just an inch taller? Or are they more?

The Mike
03-05-2008, 09:31 PM
They are 13" but the proportions are justified as well. The Bats looks about as crappy as the one before, the Joker looks surprisingly well done. I passed on the Comic version easily but this one I might have to pick up.

Same here, the 13" size coupled with crummy base body has always kept me and my $$$ away. Bummer too as I'd love to have the DC characters in 1/6 :monkey2

03-05-2008, 10:07 PM
You guys don't think that since the DC characters are Superheroes with super human strength and abilities the height is justified? I don't know but I think the height is symbolic of these characters. I think in a way Superman should be taller than my Obi-Wan or any of the other 1/6 figures I have.

But Batman is just some guy in a suit. Why should he be nearly 7 feet tall? Non-true 1:6 scale is really killing this line.

Darklord Dave
03-05-2008, 11:11 PM
Well, the figures continually sell out despite the high prices and they have plans through the next 3 years for characters, so I don't think the scale thing is "killing the line."

The body isn't as articulated as other 1/6 bodies, but displayed with each other they are very impressive. And the majority of the sculpts and the engineering of the costumes has been excellent (for the most part).

scubasteve
03-05-2008, 11:49 PM
Did they jack the price of their 13" line up or have they always been so pricey? If you're going to spend that kind of money, put it toward the HT version.

Batman looks awful and it's not just the craftsmansip of the figure. I really hate that batsuit.:monkey4

Natrix
03-06-2008, 08:20 AM
As much as I hate the new design for the Batsuit but the figure actually looks pretty cool. It is light years better than the Begins version they put out. I think the design lends itself to having a better figure with more articulation due to the fabric undersuit with the armor pieces over the top of it. I am sure the head size will be more accurate on the final version.

Joker looks pretty damn awesome though.

I agree, the line does seem to be doing well, but I think if they went with a correct scale they could sell even better.

Although I'm sure at this point it would be worse for them to change since they'd upset their core group of collectors.

Hmm...judging by the legs on the Joker piece, are those statues DC Direct stautes, or the Koto pieces that they said they were making? Since DCD has been working with Koto lately, I wonder if they maybe are just going to release their pieces instead of making their own statues like they did with the last movie.

Um, these are the DCD 13" action figures. Not statues.

And they went with the bulky body for Bats again, which is probably a mistake since the suit has so much bulk to it already. Joker on the skinny body looks great though. I'd like to see the sculpt a little closer though.

I don't think Batman looks terrible. But not great either. Joker on the other hand looks very well designed.

How well do the DCD clothes fit to regular 12" bodies? Can they be futzed with to make work with a standard body?

YoNoSe
03-29-2008, 03:51 PM
The DCD 1/6 scale (sort of) figures are 13 inches. And they are a hefty 13" at that, thier male body is built like a tank. I don't think they'd fit a standard 12 inch fig without at least some moderate tailoring skills. Or skillz, if you're cool.

galactiboy
03-29-2008, 04:28 PM
I agree and with the thinness of the material... I think it would something only someone with a lot of skillz could pull off. But on the plus side, the outfits do seem to be pretty well tailored.

YoNoSe
03-29-2008, 04:55 PM
I think the Joker looks pretty good, and as of right now I plan on picking one up. But you've gotta believe that someone else is going to produce a more in-scale Joker...right?
Scale doesn't bother me the way it does a lot of collectors, I like diversity on the shelf. But I'm not really interested in the 13" DCD Batman (Dark Knight or Batman Begins) so it would kind of stink to not have a movie Batman in scale with the movie Joker.
While I am a Takara Batman fan, I would love to see a Hot Toys Joker to go along with him. Heck, I'd even go for a masked HT Scarecrow.
I'm sure we'll get some kind of variety...eventually...:D

Buttmunch
03-29-2008, 05:15 PM
The 13" Joker is decent. The clothes are the best thing on him, and could be quite useful with only some slight resizing. But nothing on the market will compair to this:

My problem with the DCD 13" is the less than sturdy body construction and loose wrist pegs. They just are not as sturdy as your basic Sideshow figure. The shots I've seen of DCD Joker make him look stiff and toy-ish.

I went and looked at them.

Batman was pretty bad. Nice head sculpt but being on the "big" body ruins it. It looked like it has a nice fabric suit under the rubber raised areas which weren't glued to the suit and possibly a wire in the cape.

Joker looked good. Pretty decent paint job and the suit looked pretty nicely done but I am not sure which body type he is on. He came with three sets of hands, three knives, three decks of cards, gun w/clip and the robbery mask. I was going to get it but the local store had jacked the price up $10 to $100 for the Joker and was selling the Batman for $80 with the retail being $90 a piece for both. I can see dropping the Batman price but was mad that they raised the Joker price to make up the difference.

I have the HT Joker on order and wish he had as many accessories for his price.

I think the likeness is in there (it is a scan afterall), but I'm guessing this is one of those that just seriously needs a repaint. Remember Mattel's Dark Knight Joker? Josh really brought that to life!

Nice pics! Here is what I like and don't like...

Likes:
Headsculpt

weapons

Dislikes:

Oversized tie
WAAY oversized mask
Gloves are painted too light

But a decent figure, just bad price for a decent figure.

It was scanned.

Yeah, I remember hearing it was a scan. I'm generally not a big fan of scanned sculpts as they have a tendency to be high on likeness, but low on personality. I think this one has both.

plasmid303
06-11-2008, 08:26 PM
I'm relatively new to the concept of scanning for figures and such. Could someone explain to me how the process works? Is it self explanatory?

Why can't they scan the actor in a more interesting facial expression? Wouldn't that allow for more personality in the sculpt? Or is it something they took from the movie resources?

Darklord Dave
06-11-2008, 08:35 PM
They rarely scan just for merchandise. If the actor was scanned for special effects in the film then the licensor can usually borrow the scan to use for merchandise. And the time it takes to do a scan prohibits any extreme expressions, it has to be neutral. It's up to the sculptor to give it life (and there's always a sculptor to come after a scan).

I tried to buy Joker today - but the LCS said they sold out in under an hour.

Yeah, it's pretty self expalantory. The actor's face is scanned into a computer as a 3D model.

I think the reason they tend to scan them with a deadpan expression is because it would be difficult for the actor to hold an expression without moving their face during the scanning process. I'm no expert though so I could just be talking out of my ass.

I do not have him yet, but I have seen him in my LCS (they only ordered one of each and both were called for by the time I got there) and he looks like one of the most outstanding in the line.
The body could be better - but everyone knows that. Just like with the old SS buck body - everyone knows that body sucks yet they still buy the figures and sing the praises of Sideshow. So, I do the same with DCD. DCD is giving fans something that has never been done before in such a grand way, giving collectors a good representation of beloved comic characters in sixth scale. Heck, even Sideshow wont mine the sixth scale Marvel gold that is sitting beneath them, so I give DCD credit where credit is due. While Hot Toys is putting out very nice figures but for someone who is not willing to spend around $160 for Joker or Batman (or $320 together) DCD is a good deal.

They slide right in. The hands grasp tightly. I actually had 3 cards in there to begin with (which held fine), but added 2 more just for kicks. It comes with about 15 or so cards. There is only one card in my set that is a duplicate. Really, really nice accessories and figure! Wish it had WSS dollars, pocket chain, socks, and suspenders...

Thank you. I've seen TDK Batman. His head was too small, and he was a bit barrel-chested (both reasons why I didn't buy him). Joker was worth the $ for me, but Batman had too many issues. Looked like they rehashed a bit of the old BB figure to make the TDK one.

That does look better. I think Les' added hair though makes the sculpt perfect. The DCD factory paint is horrible, but your repainted one looks much, much better!

Yeah, that's not bad at all! Any more dramatic paint of that head helps it. Very nice work.

For what it's worth, I am using the DCD base for my personal custom Joker, as I love the emblem on it. I may trade that out with the HT one if I choose to, but the HT holds all the cool accessories. The cards, knives, guns, mask, etc. Not a bad base actually.

Oh very nice repaint job. Nice dramatic shot too.

Due to extreme shortness of cash, and the fact I don't intend to really delve heavily into the Batman side of figure collecting, I think I'll go for this figure as well. I actually don't mind the larger size, and I rather like the likeness.

The only thing that bugs me though is the grey waistcoat, as shouldn't it be green? I may end up either bleaching it and trying to re dye it myself, or get another made for him in the right colour fabric.

If that's the DCD verison, then I think the sculpt def. looks better than either HT and medicoms.

Waistcoat? If you mean the Suit jacket inside the trench coat then that is gray. If you mean the vest (sleeveless thing) inside the suit jacket then that is green.

sueworld

Yeah, I mean the vest. In the UK we'd call that a waistcoat. That should have been green going by how HT and Medicom's done theirs.

Actualy the suit jacket should be blue, not grey. No body but Les has gotten this right so far.

It's very questionable though, it's not a pure blue, it's a blue grey, could go both ways, as long as the right grey is used, grey can look fine, or like Les you can really match the color.

sueworld

They'd call that an 'airforce blue'. In other words a bluey grey, but of course it depends on the lightings conditions under which this image was taken.

Mine arrived today and the factory paint job on the head is pretty good, I think. Not nearly as nice as the customs out there, but the shades of green in the hair are more subtle than I was expecting, and the detail on the ears is pretty impressive (as though the clown white has mostly rubbed off).

I don't feel so bad not spending $200 on a Hot Toys version.

sueworld

Same here. I'm afraid with todays financial climate I can barely justify spending money on frivolous things like this at all, let alone what it would require to but the Hot Toys version. I know they do beautiful work, but I just haven't got the money. :(

A heads up for those who are in the UK and who wish to get the DC version a bit cheaper. Play.com are currently listing it for £44.99 including free delivery, where as Forbidden Planet have it listed for £44.99 plus £5.20 postal charges. And If you decide to buy it directly from their shop it costs £54.99! So Play seems like athe best bet. Thats where I've ordered mine from. They won't have it until the 27th of this month, but I'm not in any hurry.

I've decided that when I get hold of mine I'm going to re sculpt ares of the hair (make it more like the Hot Toys version) try and dye the vest and make him some socks to cover those bare ankles. :naughty

Oh you lucky old thing you. My meager income (or lack of it really) can only stretch to the DC one I'm afraid.

Yes, it's not as good as the HT version, but when it comes to a good likeness I still think that after I've customed it, that I'll prefer the DC head.

DarthNeil

I think I might pose the DC Direct like he's in the interrogation room (sans coat). Now to find a good table and a relatively cheap Batman (the DC Direct probably) to pose behind him---

I was in the Glasgow FB last week and they had this in stock, had a look at it and for the money it seems good, yes the sculpt isnt as good as the hot toys one but it isnt bad either.

The clothes look quite cool as week, well designed and fit good, the accesories that come with him also look cool.

I am definately planning to buy one to go with my Hot Toys one on order.

I had a look at the DC Batman, all I can say for that is oh dear a turd looks better!:D

Avoid!

That's why I'll wait and look to pick one up cheap to eventually pose behind my seated DC Direct Joker.

I actually think it's a tad better. The hair needs to be longer like the HT version, and I think with a bit of work could look really good. Didn't I hear somewher It's from a scan?

I'm strangely not all that keen on the HT likeness. The sculpting seems too overdone on the wrinkles etc.

The clothes on the other hand are simply superb

if anyone is sick of waiting for play.com to get it in stock, forbiddenplanet.co.uk (not forbiddenplanet.com which suck IMHO) have it for the same price + 2.50 shipping. 2.50 extra but you'll probably get it quicker, and without a mashed box.

Why do they suck?

Gah, even though this isn't related to this topic, but related to the same company... they slashed the price on the Tumbler. I pre-ordered that for £379.99, now they are charging £279.99.

[Edit] I'm currently waiting for the DCD Joker from frontiermodels.co.uk, they say its due in a few weeks.

He's way too tall. At least another 1 - 2 inches taller than Hot Toy's true type bodies.
