View Full Version : Indiana Jones customs (the end of an era)

Well, we finally have a good Indiana Jones figure coming out and it is a little sad to me. Indy was the reason I started making customs, and now we don't need to. As tribute to out efforts, I thought we could all post images of our Indy customs.

The end of one era is really just the beginning of a whole new world.
Sideshow's INDY products will not kill customization of Indy figures... it will simply provide us with more and better options!
Heck, it took mere minutes for someone to point out how easy it will be to customize a Professor Indy figure thanks to the extra head announced with the "Raiders" figure.

I agree. They will still customize the Indy figures and do variations, but it won't be the same. He's what got most of us into customizing figures.
Personally, I only make a custom if there isn't a official version. After Indy, I did Doctor Who 9, and am working on Paul Maud'Dib from the Sci-Fi channels Dune. So, to me Indy is done.

Thanks! I didn't make mine, I bought it. It was made by Shawn at Sovereign and Chris King (the UK Vader expert). I've had it since 2002 and it's still one of my best customs. It's been holding place for this SS Indy for a long time.
I hope I can get my new SS INDY to pose like this:

Not for me. I love Indiana Jones and want my figures as accurate as possible. Indy is clean shaven with specific glasses. Unless I can manage a repaint or get someone to do it, its still not complete without those glasses not to mention the suit color and bowtie which would be the trick.

I think the Professor Jones version of the Sideshow Indy would be great to see. I even know where to get the perfect glasses. They are in a Horizon Prof. Henry Jones, Sr. vinyl model kit. I was going to use them for a Clark Kent custom, but I think I'll save them for a Professor Indiana Jones.
Also, there's another idea: Club Obi-Wan Indy in tux. Think about it. Sideshow Legacy Sean Connery Bond jacket, new Sideshow Raiders Indy...:D

My Sovereign Studios Indy. I think I may be the only one who got this head, which, for some reason, Shaun was unable to reproduce afterwards. I may also be the only one who preferred a Sideshow body to his usual Dragon.
As an added bonus for this thread, here's my review (http://www.mwctoys.com/REVIEW_062303b.htm)of the figure (with original head) from Michael Crawford's site.

I love my Sovereign Indy. It has been displayed proudly for a long time. I honor the work that went into it and the artistry that crafted it.
All the same, I am really looking forward to Sideshow's Indiana. I was briefly tempted to use some of the custom Indy's parts for Sideshows figure, but I'd much rather keep him whole.

Cool stuff guys! (I love your's Josh! That one cool pose of him standing there all relaxed..)
And cool REAL Indy clothes and loot you got there!
Here's this old thing. Made back when you had to scour the world for parts. Started about 1997 or so and taking about two years to put together. Even then, I replaced his body twice! And upgraded parts until I grew tired of working on him. That's why I never made another one.
Now, you can go online, and in a day get all you need. Or just order the Sideshow and be done with it! :lol
Anyway, yesteryear's Les-made Indy of old...

For me, this is kind of the end of an era. I can always rework the existing SS figures, but there will never be a figure for me like my old Indy. He was the hardest one for me to ever make back then.
BTW, Dave, I only get a fatal error message when I click on your Gallery link.
Any help would be appreciated.

This is hopefully the final version of my custom (except a few more paint touch ups).
NOTE: The color is too light. That's my camera, not the figure. The skin tone looks much better in person. If anyone has digital camera tips, please PM me.
Here's whats new:
1. A felt fedora from Stevo's Toys
2. New holster and belt
3. Leather whip that is closer to scale than any other I have seen
4. Removed the lining and zipper from the jacket
5. Moved button from one side of shirt to the other and added a button hole.
6. Repainted head (still needs a few more touch ups)

Yeah, I totally agree Indiana Jones was THE single figure I always wanted in the 1:6 scale format. I missed out on the original Kenner 12" Indy from Raiders back in 1981, so I've wanted him since then!
I was very fortunate to have the help of an incredible cutomizer, Mary Lacour, from Lafayette, LA. She sells on eBay under her user ID: mpl59. Check out her auctions sometime. Anyway, she hand-made my custom Indy's belts, shoulder bag, pistol, bullwhip, hard resin painted fedora hat, and relics he collected from the first three movies. The golden idol from Raiders, the three Sankara stones from Temple Of Doom, and the Holy Grail from The Last Crusade. I am forever grateful to Mary for her masterful work! :bow
I got the remainder of Indy's outfit from an existing 12" G.I. Joe Tuskeegee Airman figure. His leather jacket, which I "distressed" by painting it some, the pants, and shirt, and boots. I got one of Lonnie Hale's earlier "Frontline" Indy heads a few years ago on eBay. Yeah, my paintjob on it isn't that great. But I still love it! Check out some pictures of it.... Oh yeah, since then I've removed the dreaded "doll dots" or "eye dots" in my Indy's eyes, and I've cut off the cuffs on the end of his sleeves, and cut off the snaps on his jacket. I'll post some newer pictures of him here in this thread soon.

Here's some later pictures of my custom Indy without the dreaded "doll dots" in his eyes, and I fixed up his leather jacket some more. I cut off the brown elastic cuffs at the wrists, and cut off the buttons and snaps. I think it looks MUCH better! But, I would like to repaint his eyes. Doesn't Harrison Ford have green, or maybe hazel eyes? I painted them brown, but the more pictures of him that I see....his eyes look more of an olive or lighter green color.

Yeah, I still gotta go over the "John J. Rambo" on the Rambo figure stand I use for my Indy. I've got a nice "Indiana Jones" name logo from Mary Lacour I'll cut out and put on the nameplate on the figure stand. I'm going to also get him a more brown shirt. I realize the one I have now is bright white, and Indy's shirt under his leather jacket is light brown. I'll do that sometime. Hey, everyone else who has made a custom Indy...where did you find the shirt for yours? Please let me know. Thanks!

I've decided to work on a new custom Indy. I bought and Arnie Kim recast (let's not get into that debate here. I tried to contact Arnie personally and got no reply) and I have the Lonnie Hale version two head. I send the Kim off to Les to paint but have decided to mess with the Hale head. So far, I have cut the neck off and am reshaping it for a hot toys neck post. Also, I have removed the crown of the head and am planning to hollow it out so I can put in glass eyes. I suck at eye painting and thought this would work well. If you want to change the position of the eyes, you just take the hat off and will have access.
When I am done with the head mods, I'll post pictures here and I'll post pictures of Les's paint job on the Arnie Kim one. After all this is done, I'll decide what to do with each head.

Here's my Indy. First, a few shots of the new head I'm offering now. Wanted to show this first, as the one on the figure sucks:o I don't know. A buddy, who normally has a very critical and accurate eye liked it so I went with it. BUT.... here's the new one:

And the rest of the goods:

I wouldn't say the arrival of "official" figures is the end of anything. Different fans look for different things in their pieces and no one figure ever has everything, so there's room for options. Sometimes official product revives interest in all other offerings. Really hard-core collectors usually buy one of nearly everything available. It's also interesting that I started making and selling Indy figures at the very pinacle of Toys McCoy's success. My figures were not as good as they are now, and the McCoy figure never slowed me down. If there's room for a $400.00 Takara figure, then there's room for anything!

Shawn, I still stand by my statement that your Indy is the best damn custom Indy I have ever seen... the tailoring alone is mindblowing.

I agree with DarkArtist81. Shawn makes the best Indy outfits.
Here are my latest Indy kitbash/ customs. The first is my all Hasbro Indy. The second is my "Don't call me junior!" Indy from TLC.

Well, I guess I was wrong about the end of an era. As some may know, I got my hands on an Arnie Kim sculpt (let's not get into that argument again please). While Les is painting that sculpt, I got bored today and put some of my parts with the Hasbro whip Indy. The only things not with him are the New Line Boots (didn't want to mess with the laces right now) and the Relic Hunter jacket (couldn't get it over the enormous Hasbro hands). Just thought I'd share.

Here are a few pics of my custom Indy as well. It will still hold a special place in my collection, even with SS's Indy coming soon.

So I'm resurrecting this thread, since we now have seen Medi's and SS Indy,
I think it's safe to say that The Quest for the Perfect Indy is more alive than ever!!
Personally, with my SS Indy, I'll change the body, jacket and shirt...
What are you guys planing to do with yours?

Have to agree with that... really looks like 1:1 work :rock
And as Kuzeh has pointed out, SSC is not perfection. Although I think a lot of the parts are going to be upgrades for existing figures. And really can't wait to see the repaints and weathering jobs people do :rock

kuzeh is right. I'm going to be doing all sorts of mods to mine. Starting with a repaint and a shirt replacement. I'll have to wait and see about the body and jacket when it's in hand.
Custom Indys are not dead yet.

Great idea for a topic - I love seeing all these great customs. I have one I pieced together and upgraded parts for years. I keep it in an Hasbro box now.

There are some whipmakers that make mini ones for fun. Here's a link to one.

The mini Indy might be a bit large, but it really cracks!

I was wondering if anyone knew of a sculpt available for making a Sallah figure. Any input would be much appreciated.

I'd check with some of the great members here like Chris Howes, Les Walker, and Andy Bergholtz to name a few. Maybe one of them would take a commission for it. It's worth a try. I'd love a 1:6 scale Sallah myself too! He was great. One of Indy's best supporting friends. :D

For a cheap Sallah fix you could probably use the 12" Hasbro Cairo Swordsman sculpt. Maybe paint the hair & beard a little darker.

Indeed, I just simply repaint the SS head though.:p

Ummm...looks like the hat is on sideways. It's definitely not on correctly. You need to turn the hat some to get it on his head correctly. The Sideshow head sculpt from Trevor Grove looks awesome as usual. Looks like your Indy needs his belts, holster and pistol, and his shoulder bag. That's not the Sideshow Indy leather jacket or bullwhip. But, it's looking good so far. Check out www.toyanxiety.com to get the parts you need to finish him.
