I'm a bit surprised that Hasbro's making a 12 inch Nazi figure. The 12 inch Mutt's headsculpt is surprisingly good.

I know it's easy to bag on Hasbro but these are far better than the Indy toys I had to pick from when I was a kid. I still have my old 12 inch Indy. These are perfect for my kid to play with now. I'll be happy to let him play with the Hasbro version if it means he won't screw with my Sideshow Indy. For the average kid who just wants to play out the adventures this will be pure joy.
I didn't post the link so much for the hardcore 1/6 scale guys but more for the fans of Indy who are thrilled to finally have the market flooded with merchandise the way it should have been when we were kids.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Look at these two jackets side by side.
http://homepage.mac.com/denkinews/images/toys/indy_jackets.jpg
There is absolutely no leather texture in the Sideshow jacket. It's plain brown vinyl. The way the stitching looks on the pocket makes it painfully obvious. The Hasbro jacket looks like, well, a leather jacket. I'm as surprised as anybody, but judging by the prototypes, Hasbro has outdone Sideshow in several places. Even their belt looks nicer. That's not to say that the Hasbro figure will be the better one overall -- far from it. But I can't understand how Hasbro can do something that Sideshow can't.

Maybe it'll take a couple of items from the Hasbro INDY to satisfy some people once they have their SS INDY in hand-- if that's the case no big whoop-- we're talking about a what, $15-20 Hasbro 12" fot kit bashing?

Having just gotten one of the Wested Leather (authentic lambskin) Indy jacket's, I have to disagree. The leather is incredibly smooth and looks more like the Sideshow coat than the one from Hasbro. The one from Hasbro also looks black to me.

Right! The Hasbro one looks like a bomber jacket which is not what Indy wore.

I'm not saying that the Hasbro jacket is perfect, but it looks considerably better to me. I am very skeptical about whether the material shown in the Sideshow prototype can be weathered to look like real leather. Sideshow has done much better looking leather materials than this. Look at Aragorn's duster. Even the T-800 terminator leather jacket (which sucked overall) had some texture to it. I'm not seeing that at all here.

Hasbro's arms have always been too short. Even with their last upgraded body, like the one they gave Dooku, the sleeves are way too short for a standard SSC body.

Actually, really, REALLY nice leather jackets can actually look more like plastic than leather...but that said, I think the Sideshow one does look too plasticky, though maybe they'll weather it for the production figure.

02-17-2008, 10:58 AM
I think it's mostly the stitching the is ruining the look for me. It's out of scale and the way the material looks around the stitches makes it look like smooth vinyl to me, rather than smooth leather.

On the plus side it will most likely be some other material when finally produced so its probably a moot point :lol
I do prefer seeing a clean jacket now especially if thats what is close to what we'll see in the end. The difference between proto and production Aragorn was pretty dissapointing.

That 12" Cairo Swordsman looks pretty good, but I'll wait for Sideshow's version to be honest.
The small stuff strangely doesn't interest me at all and I currently collect the small Star Wars figures and used to have all the old small Indiana Jones figures back when I was young. But these are just too small for me to get worked up over, I would've preferred 7" scale.
Both 12" Indy Jackets look like crap to me. I'd prefer something in between the two, less plasticy looking with more grain, less obvious stitching, and a dark wash of paint to help it look old and worn.
I have a 12" Indiana Jones jacket that looks better that I planed on using on a custom Indy, so I'm covered for one, I just wish Sideshow would improve on theirs so I wouldn't have to use it.

I don't know I have the Indiana Jones jackets made by wested and the lamb skin which was used in the movies for the way it stretches and hangs looks exactly like the Sideshow jacket. Cow or goat has more of a grain to the leather, while in reality the lamb skin coat would've been torn to shreads anytime Indy pulled one of his stunts. I have both a goat skin and a lamb skin Indy jacket and the lamb skin is the exact replica, so Sideshow actually has it right.

From Figures.com:
http://www.figures.com/databases/action.cgi?setup_file=fignews2.setup&category=actionfigures&topic=41&show_article=681&nl=1
In a promotion pioneered by their early Star Wars lines, Hasbro announced that they will be offering three separate mail-in redemption offers with their upcoming line of Indiana Jones figures. Labeled the ‘Ticket to Adventure’, the offer will encourage fans to collect figures from each of three different assortments. The exclusive figures will require four proof-of-purchase labels (plus s&h) from upcoming Indy 3 ¾”, 12” and Adventure Heroes lines.

Okay, so that makes it sound like you have to have a POP from each of the three product categories for whatever Mail-Away item you send for. That makes more sense, especially since the processing fees will be different for each item (I'm guessing the Ark will be $10+).

I can't believe you guys are complaining about buying 4 figures that will cost in total $80 (and not horrible looking figures at that) but will be paying in excess of that for 1 figure from SSC no questions asked. LOL.
I bet many of you have expensive SSC items sitting in boxes in the attic so whats the difference.
In addition, when SSC makes an Ark trust it will be $50+.
It just seems silly for high end collectors to whine because a lower end collectible company is making something you want for a change but you don't like how its being offered. :monkey2

But you'll be happy to know that I plan to buy Hasbro's cheap $20 Indy for my 5 year old son. :)

It is a bit lame, and I think that the reason it is being offered as a mail away not sold in stores) is they know many collectors will want the Arc, but not necessarily the crappy figures.
Which they are crappy, fine for kids, but if Hasbro wanted to they could make them look better and still make a killing.

The real reason behind the mail-away, of course, is that it's a gimmick. And Hasbro has been all about cheap gimmicks for years now.

Well of course, they know more people will buy 4 crappy figures just to get the Arc. I guess it would be nice to have a kid around for this one, but no children yet so I'm gonna pass. I just can't justify buying those figures on principle.

And to be honest, SSC is also about gimmicks.
The whole idea behind exclusives is a gimmick to get people to pay 10% more than they can get it from a retailer (which probably really nets SSC 30-40% or more since they sell to retailers at wholesale prices).
Then of course there is the ultra limited items that SSC loves to make so they have 1 out of every 50 items they make actually go up in value.
No biggies either way, I like both companies a lot.
I think the Ark is a great gimmick though because I don't think it would be a great seller at retail anyway. Similar to the Djarik table not being a huge seller.
Also, I'm sure Hasbro could make these better and they could also charge $50 for them. But that isn't exactly their business. I don't think its fair to say Hasbro can stand to lower their margins without saying the same to SSC.
Its the principle of Hasbro offering something on Target and TRU shelves for the budding 12" collector as opposed to the 25-40 year old uber collectors that actually makes me want this line despite there possibly being better product.
I plan on picking and choosing between both SSC and Hasbro.

I'd love to get that ark, but I have to honestly ask myself, 'would I hate myself if I bought $80 worth of crap Hasbro 12" figures?'
The answer is yes!
I'll wait for Sideshow to release one

In case anyone thinks that Hasbro's Mailaway 1/6 Ark shown at Toy Fair isn't accurate or is too shiny:

That's because you have to buy the others in order to mail away for it.:lol

which makes it very sad. Maybe they'll put it up on HTS ( hasbrotoyshop.com) if there are enough requests.

Sure, for the low price of $100. :lol The whole point of the ark is to get people to buy their figures, so the only way I could see them selling it straight out for a reasonable price is if they have a bunch left over after the movie excitement has died down or something.

I'll likely try to find some of the Indy figures to get the ark, and I can give my nephews some cool toys, minus the UPC codes of course...

Yeah, April/May.
BTW, Dave Myatt posted some cool new Hi-Res pics of Hasbro's initial INDY offerings at CoolToyReview:

Yeah, that's what I thought. And it even appears to have an additional gun-gripping hand, which I can't remember seeing on 3 3/4" figures before.

The little figures are nice. I doubt I'll be getting any though, gave up on 3 3/4" a long time ago. Well, maybe I'll pick up an Indy. :)
The only hasbro I know I'm getting is the Cairo Swordsman 12". Not a bad figure, and likely not something SS will produce.
Of course, I want that bloody ark too. Not sure how I'm gonna get 3 more stickers after the Swordsman because I don't like the other 12"s. Maybe they'll off a few more like Monkey Man or Marion in a different outfit than SS.

I wonder if Hasbro UK will offer the mailaway items?
I'd buy the shirtsleeve Indy and the Cairo swordsman, after that I'm struggling. Possibly the Nazi. I just hope there's two decent figures in the remaining four (I'm sure there'll at least be a Henry Jones Snr). We haven't seen any Temple of Doom Hasbro 12" figures yet, although there's a Mola Ram Mighty Mugg. I can't see a Mola Ram 12" figure (too grisly for kids) but a generic Thugee would be fantastic. I always loved their red and black outfits and the face paint.
Wor-Gar
03-04-2008, 02:05 PM
Yeah, I'd go for a Thugee.
Hasbro's best at very simple outfits, so any Cairo character or Thugee cult member would work.
The Nazi looks so generic, there's absolutely no reference to an Indy movie in his appearance. In fact, I can't even place him.
HOWEVER -- that Hasbro Nazi uniform MIGHT work as Nazi Indy in "Last Crusade".

I *might* get the 12" Talking Indy even though he's so fugly just to match up with the Kenner, McCoy, and Sideshow 12"ers I have. It's sad that the likeness is even worse than that of over 20 years ago.
I really want to get a Hasbro Ark, but don't want to get 4 12" figures. I'm pretty confidant that Sideshow will eventually produce a superior Ark and I don't want 2 versions of the Ark so I'll probably wait. Hopefully Sideshow will announce that they are making an Ark accessory set before the Hasbro stuff comes out.

If the Hasbro Talky Jones comes with real lines from the movie, maybe I'll get it just to remove the voice chip and stick it in the Sideshow one! :)

I'm kind of dissapointed by the 3 3/4" figures.,they looked better at Toyfair... but it could also be seeing them in HR they are larger than in person so it shows off the flaws more.
I was thinking about picking up one or two of them, but not as sure now.

The only one that comes close to nailing Ford's likeness is the Cairo shirtleeves Indy - which has poor leg articulation. Hopefully the head from this will fit on the generic Indy neck post, plus the Crystal Skull shirtsleeves Indy, which has better leg articulation. But yeah, it would be nice if we didn't have to make our own figures to get a decent Indy.
I also think the holsters will end up looking huge. I'd prefer a non-working holster to a dorky looking working one.
I'm still looking forward to walking into a supermarket and seeing Indy figures on the shelves, but at the moment I prefer the vintage line!

What's with the eyes on the 3 3/4"?
I've noticed with the SW line the articulation has gone up but the likenesses and plastic quality have gone way down. Almost looks waxy. The SW in the late 90's were way nicer than the 30th Anniversary stuff. This looks like the 30th anniversary.
I'll still be getting this line for the miniplaysets and army builders and I must admit they did look good in person. And I'll have the SSC as my perfect Indy.
