View Full Version : I cancelled my mumak...

I decided to cancel my Mumak tonight after talking about it with my wife - she and I felt that the pose wasn't really that, well, dynamic. Also the $300 US wasn't particularly helpful.
:( :( :(
But all is not sad - I did re-order the battle troll statue. In the end that $175 statue doesn't seem so expensive now...

I didn't order Mumak, and after SDCC don't plan to. Sadly I'm cancelling the battle troll...as much as I wanted this piece the scale of it really turned me off, he's just way too small.

I don't care about the Mumak statue.
I thought they were great in the movie but in polystone they're kind of "empty".
I think the Warg is sitting in a strange way. I'm sure it's like in the movie but it looks strange to me.
I'm keeping all the other rider statues. They're great!:clap

Actually, I cancelled my Mumak and my Attack Troll...each for different reasons.
Although I believe that the Mumak sculpt is indeed excellent and exceedingly detailed, I really have a problem with adding more dead or dying sculpts. I already own Sideshow's excellent Santi with Bomb piece, as well the Haradrim soldier figure. That is enough fatalism for me.
As for the Attack Troll, I already own the classic Cave Troll, and once you own that piece, there really is no need for another troll. In short, the first Cave Troll set the standard for the character...the new piece is much like the second Balrog. It has been released for those who missed the first go-round.
I am still on the fence concerning the last two horse and rider pieces...Gimli/Legolas on Arod & Aragorn at the Black Gate. I don't think I will preorder these, but I might pick one up on Ebay if the price is right.
As far as I'm concerned, my final must-buy LOTR pieces will be:
King of the Dead
Pippin
Lady Galadriel
Sauron
Peter Jackson as Corsair
...sailing off into the West.

I ordered Muffin and I will keep that order! I think she is wonderful and after seeing the pics from SD, I'm even more convinced that this will be a wonderful piece that is a must have. As far as Aragorn at the Black Gates goes, I think this piece has gotten everything that was wrong with the earlier Aragorn pieces fixed and can't wait to add him to my household as well. The PJ statue is probably my least favorite of the last 3,but I will keep him as well. I jsut wish he was bigger!

Muffin definately looks better in person, as usual. I really like it, but it does nothing for my husband. He ain't the one buying it, so it will come home!
Ajaxxxxx, you may want to reconsider cancelling the attack troll. Although smaller, it's not too small, and is still incredibly detailed. A really great piece. The smashed Gondorian helm beneath it and the expression on the troll's face really adds to the details. I like him better than Muffin... http://www.geocities.com/bat3193/smiley1/xyxthumbs.gif

It's quite unbelievable how I always seem to like the least liked pieces best :dunno
I've got 3 very expensive items coming at the end of this year and therefore I am unable to order the Mumak piece. And I am racking my brain as to wether or not to order one anyway, thats how much I like the piece. I really cant understand why nobody likes it, just because its not the pose they wanted it to be in....

So did I .....................................:eek
With Sideshow anyway as yes the $300 price tag is a tad bit too much detailing or not. Way expensive for the size, I mean compair it to the first $300 beasts, Cavey and Balrog.....:bow

I've cancelled mine as well.
Agreed, not worth the price and I'm not a big fan of the "mini muffin" to begin with. When I don't have a Faramir or Eomer statue in my collection, the Mumak just seems insignificant and unnecessary. Besides, there are just too many other items from other sideshow lines that I'm interested in. The 1/4 scales have got my attention.

I cant fault anybody for cancelling a piece, esp if they are not 100% sure on it. $300 can be a big chunk of one's paycheck plus with so many other things sideshow is releasing that are outstanding. It becomes a choose and pick type thing.
I like this statue BUT $300 can help with something I REALLY want ie Doom and Predator that Iam 100% sure of. And I can only hope later that I will be able to pick this one up.

It's a big deal to me. Which is why I am putting the $300 towards it rather than spending it on muffin. There's got to be a trade off for me as I have a budget. For me, Muffin was an easy choice for the chopping block.

I really like the Mumak/Muffin but specifically passed on the pre-order from Sideshow in order to wait for the flood. I missed out on pre-ordering from our regular online shops at the better pricing, so flood it is for me.
I think Josh may have a point about the amount crow being eaten come this winter. This one is going to blow people away once it starts shipping. I think it's one of those pieces that has to be seen in person to really appreciate it.
The price is pretty steep, especially with the flood of items coming down the pike but I think it will be one of the more popular statues in the end.

I'm not getting the Mumak either, even though it's a creature which is all I collect from LotR. I'm not fond of the dying pose.

Thats exactly what I'm saying. You really gotta see Aragorn @ The Black Gates, Legolas/Gimli, and the Mumak specifically in person to see how cool they are. I really believe anyone just dismissing them based on early photos will kick themselves if they can't get them cheaper.

Yeah, the dying pose is the turnoff I really understand with people. Its not something you expect or most would like. Something about it grabs me and especially after getting my Harad from Adam last week something is kind of cool about the dying pose. Seeing the pose on the Mumak in person gives a better understanding of it at least for me and my little pea brain.

I preordered the mumakil but will likely cancel my order too esp when the ebay flood drives the price down. after reading all these notes and comments, i agreetaht it doesnt deserve the $300 price tag. maybe $200 or $225. the detail is good but the scale is smaller and just a bit bigger than the gamesworkshop one. if i do good in painting the one i have then, i might just get 2 0r 3 more and convert in various poses.

Basically, I don't care for the pose, or the fact that the rigging on top is bare empty.

Am I right in thinking that most people cancel the Mumak more because of the stance than anything else? It's a shame really, because I truly believe that Weta made the Mumak only because the Freaks were screaming for one. (Unfortunately, we didn't scream louder for Faramir or we might have got him instead.)
I was never interested in a war elephant, let alone a dying one. The Mumak in the film tore another one down in the process of falling. Where is it? :ar And $300 is way too much money for just one down-sized Oliphant IMO.

And also, you were giving it to WetaWork about 'showing off' that he is getting a 1/4 Predator, it seems to me your showing off that you went to Comic Con by saying how awesome they all are in person.
Just get over the fact not everyone loves every statue, and quit telling people they will love it, when infact, they probably wont.

Sometimes I wonder if SSW decided to just play a big cruel joke on us during their last production days. We screamed for a Pippin and end up with a Pippin in an awful cringing pose--even with an ES of 2000, it took quite awhile to sell out...poor thing.
We screamed for a Mumak and end up with one on its last legs.
On the flipside, after having seen the Aragorn and Legolas in person, I think I will be getting them. The mumak, on the other hand, was worse than I expected =/ Those pictures on Sideshow's site have better color contrast and saturation.

I really like the dying pose of the state. It's not as cool as a charging Mumak would have been but I like it much better than the one on the Gollum dvd. I watched the dvd again and the statue is larger but is just standing there in a daze. Very very dull. What I like about this one is even though it's dying, at least it's not a still pose, it's actually in the middle of battle. Plus with the slits on the front legs, I personally look at it as the Mumak that Eowyn and Merry took down which adds a bit of coolness to the statue.
I think the reason the statue has that "empty" feeling is because of the missing Haradhrim. BUT I think even if we would have gotten a different pose and it was a few inches larger, it wouldn't have included any Haradrim figures so it would have that empty feeling regardless. Weta probably learned their lesson with all the complaints about the poor looking Morgul Lord that sits on the Fell Beast (great statue besides the Morgul Lord) and decided not to attempt that with small scale Haradrim. They have too much detail to sculpt in such a small scale.
I'm keeping my order and I can't wait to get it. This is one of the statues I'm looking forward to the most. I don't have the original Balrog or Cave Troll so this statue is going to be one of my big ones.
I'd like to get the Kong vs. T-Rex as well but I want to wait to see what I think of the movie first before I get it. :D

I have to say that I agree with Josh as far as seeing the Mumak in person . In the past I have passed up many statues based on the pictues I saw of them , but then I would go to a friends house and get a look at them in person , and I usually ended up buying them shortly after . The entire Helm set is one of those instances for me . I originally had no interest in them , but then I saw Figwits and Adams collections , and now I own most of them . I did cancel the Mumak with Sideshow . I am a bit bothered by the pose , as I would have prefered a healthy , upright , charging Mammoth , but IMO this piece has character and emotion all of its own , and I do still like it . I cancelled mine strictly because of the price . It is true that I have yet to see it in person , and therefore I may not be able to judge its value , and I am expecting to be impressed , but I know for a fact I can get it for atleast $40 less by not ordering through Sideshow . I personaly understand the complaints on both sides , we just need to figure out for ourselves what works best .

Wow popular thread today....I'm cancelling the battle troll because I have the original..the battle didnn't appear taller than any of the uruk's, so it just seems too out of scale for my collection - but that's me. It's definately a nice piece. As far as the muffin goes it's again a scale issue which is why I haven't gotten the watcher or fell beast. Due to all the fighting on both sides about Mumak , here is a poll related to the subject :

I saw the Aragon and the likeness seems spot on.

I didn't cancel the mumak because of the sculpt - It's nice, and looks like a great piece, but if it was half the price (or even $100 cheaper) then I would probably keep it.
It's a gut feeling for me - a piece just grabs me right in the guts, and then I know I want it, and will always be happy with it. I was really expecting the mumak to give me that "gut" feeling, but it didn't - just a little disappointed with the pose. The wallet also certainly comes into play as well.
Anyway, I'm sure I will enjoy the battle troll.

Understand exactly how you feel.
The last time this happened to me was when I saw Sideshow's Alien Queen Bust...knocked me out from the first time I saw it. Knew I had to have it. True art; brilliant sculpt; absolutely commands every room it is in.
I think the new Marvel "VS" series dioramas are also going to be extraordinary and set a new standard for dynamic 3D art.
It seems to me that Sideshow is definitely going in the direction of more complex and dramatic statuary, and in doing so, the prices of the pieces are going to inevitably rise because of the level of detail inherent in the work.
Sad thing for me is, that none of the remaining LOTR pieces are doing this for me...I feel like I am adding them to my collection out of a sense of completeness. Maybe I need to rethink this.

I dont blame you ajaxx, I was considering cancelling the attack troll. It's too small for the size of scale I have in my collection now, the Cave Troll as you mentioned. Kong and Rex will be mine as well, but something about the design on that Attack Troll just draws me to it. I may just make an exception in a seperate room.

Fell Beast boy....I realize you hate Diesel.....but whatever he said about your mom was true at the time.
If she's since lost 300 pounds or quit tricking you can't blame Cory for that.
