Oh, the only Gentle Giant Indy products I'm planning to get so far are the desk accessories. Not a fan of mini busts or bust-ups and that horse statue looks craptastic. We'll see how the Indy and father motorcycle statue that was shown at SDCC turns out. I'm sure they'll do a "normal" Indy statue as well.

Great pose, and the arc that the whip scribes is just gorgeous. Wish we could see the face better, though! It's hard to tell if it's a good likeness or not....
As for the desk accessories.... if the Ark of the Covenant is 1/6 scale (like the minibusts), then THAT would a fabulous bit of 'yay!", wouldn't it?

As for the minibust looking like he's bald, I lightened up the shadow under the brim, and knocked the saturation down. You can see more clearly:
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/3599/ggindybustqg3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
This is what we in the visual graphics industry call BAD TANGENTS. An image is presented in a way that it awkwardly sends the wrong message.
Because of the angle, it looks like he's bald, or has a buzz cut.
Look at the red arrow.... that dark line around his ear is the back of his head, covered in hair. If the minibust was turned a few degrees to its right, this wouldn't look as strange.
Also, look at the blue arrow I made. Because of the awkward positioning of the minibust, ya can't tell if that curve is his cheek or the edge of his nose.
The basic rule of thumb is: don't have obects in your images appear to butt up against each other. One object should actually be visually stepping across the other, or be a few steps back away from it, so that their is negative space in between.
This could be really cool once we see some more pics!

Apparently Lucasfilm was pretty clear on indicating to all of the licensees (including Sideshow) that they should focus on the original films FIRST with the new products, particularly "Raiders". The "Crystal Skull" stuff (especially from the high-end licensees) won't start hitting until later. Obviously, LEGO and Hasbro will have stuff from the new flick sooner than most though.

Do you think they are waiting to see how CRYSTAL SKULL is received first? Since there's been a dearth of INDY memorabilia, do you think they are tapping the hunger for that FIRST, using the advent of a new film as a spring-board, and then proceed with slightly riskier products once they see how the feedback is?

I had noticed that myself. Found it odd but then I remembered Irish saying what he mentioned in his post earlier. Which is fine with me as it allows me to focus on the older films first and decided what I like from the new one.

It could very well be. Another likely reason is that Spielberg was so steadfast on being as secretive as possible about certain elements from the new film that the licensees were not allowed nearly as much access and info early on as they were used to with the SW prequels (when Lucas gave them pretty much anything they wanted a year or two in advance) and thus they only had time to produce a mountain of stuff based on the ORIGINAL movies by this Spring.

I know for a fact that is the case with the LEGO sets. I know someone who works for LEGO and they were told that they couldn't release any sets on Crystal Skull until after the movie was released. All the LEGO employees that worked on the Crystal Skull sets, rumor has it it was less than 10, had to sign paperwork with Lucasfilm so that they wouldn't release any details about the film to anyone including other LEGO employees. LEGO does have sets for Crystal Skull that are scheduled for release in the fall when LEGO usually releases their new products. The sets though aren't scheduled to go into production until after the film premires so that no info about the film can be leaked.

I agree that toymakers DO spoil movies.
I know Phantom Menance was ruined for me by all those Hasbro Toys that came out a month before the movie. :monkey2
One thing that's missing from that list is the TRU exclusive set that's got a MSRP of $130!! :google It hasn't been announced yet only the set number was leaked a few months ago on the LEGO website Lugnut.

TPM was ruined for me when my mom got me the sound track before the movie came out. I was going to put it away and not look at it nor listen to it until I had seen the movie, but I dropped it, as I bent to pick it up the words "Qui-Gon's Noble End" practically jumped off the track list at me. That sucked.
As for the topic at hand, I don't think I'll be getting any of this stuff, although the horse statue does appeal to me and the Joneses in the motorcycle sounds cool too.
And on the subject of the legos...I don't think those really give much away at all. Pretty much Indy and his leading lady escape from bad guys, Indy blows up a vehicle, and Indy goes in a temple to solve puzzles. Sounds like it could fit any of the movies.

My all-time favorite bit of movie spoilage by a merchandiser....
Back in 1984, Burger King was doing STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK collectible drinking glasses, the kind with art on the outside depicting scenes from the movie.
They were doing 4 different glasses, one every week, with the last glass hitting the BK lounge the week the film was released.
I remember this commercial on TV, about 2 weeks before the film came out:
"Get your Burger King ST III: Search For Spock glasses now! This week: Enterprise Destroyed! Next week: Spock Lives!"

I can't say that I'm thrilled with what GG is doing with the Indy license so far. Desk accessories? That's something I certainly don't need.
And I'm not happy with the way the first statue and bust are turning out. The bust looks like Indy doesn't have any teeth. What I really want out of what GG showed at SDCC is that bronze bust, which with my luck will turn out to be a PGM exclusive, and probably look like Nicholas Cage from National Treasure.

I don't really have much interest in statues and busts. Every once in a while I may pick something up, but not often. Thing with Indy is, Sideshow's amazing 12" figure pretty much ruins any other upcoming Indy collectibles. So far nothing I have seen lives up to it, and I have lost all desire for the other upcoming Indy releases.
That being said, I can see myself buying a Hasbro 3 3/4" figure or two when I come across them, but that is about as far as I will venture.

SDCC and NYCC exclusive:
"Indian" Jones Artifact Crate Paperweight (3 collections) $35 each
Each crate features a detachable magnetic whip and fedora, a removable crate lid and rubber snakes.
Collections are randomly packed. Every crate will contain one of three artifact collections. Collection 1 includes: the Golden Idol and Temple Tablet. Collection 2 includes: the Sankara Stones and Holy Grail Cup. Collection 3 includes the Krystal Skull.
So a real bummer--you don't get the full set, just one of three at random.

Actually, it's true--the last convention exclusive they sold to PG members (holo Maul) wasn't a raffle, but a first come/first served regular order. I hope they continue with that, for the sake of those who will be renewing their memberships. The raffles were just no fun for the most part.

Just posted this at GGC and wanted to share:
Indy Gets a New Look!
You can toss the old pictures of the Indy Mini Bust out the window! Our friends at Mousedroid.com posted the below picture as part of the Australian Toy Fair where Indy sports a new sculpt and idol in hand! With plenty of buzz on the boards, we went direct to Gentle Giant Ltd to ask what was going on. Was it a variant or show exclusive or was this the new updated Indy?
GG has confirmed to GGC that this is the most recent version, but not the final version. They are still in the approval stage with Lucas but I think everyone will agree this is a great improvement from what was seen in New York and a welcome improvement. Nice Job GG!

To each their own. GG have done Indy justice with this bust, and I'm sure they'll handle the whip properly. I've been quite happy with their production pieces recently, provided they keep the original likeness, of course.
And that hat looks totally removable -- some poor soul probably just wasn't pedantic enough while placing it for that show.

Nothing Gentle Giant has ever done makes me think that the three variations of the crates will be split evenly. They just don't tend to operate that way. With a total edition size of 3000 pieces, I will guess that there will be a 1500, 1000, 500 split on these just so they can make things more "fun" for their collectors.

No kidding. Well, IMO, it's showing in the products they are producing. I've been buying from GG since CIV and over the past year or two I've perceived a change in the company, not only from their business practices but also in the quality of their products.

Bronze Plated Indiana Jones on Horse Statue
This is, hands down, the Indy piece to own. When the sculpt for this magnificent statue was unveiled last year, fans and collectors knew it was something special. Gentle Giant has now taken the artistry one step further with a shared exclusive bronze-plated edition -- that's bronze-plated, not bronze-finished -- elevating this collectible to a whole new level of desirability. By being plated in real bronze, each piece can take on an individual patina, which will only grow more beautiful with age. Stands 11 inches tall.
This bronze-plated edition will be limited to 500 pieces, so make sure you grab yours early. Prototype pictured and subject to change. Limit of 3 per customer.
