BioShock zaps VGAs
2K's dystopian actioner takes top prize at SpikeTV's annual event; Call of Duty 4, Super Mario Galaxy, Rock Band also honored.

Though GameSpot's own Best and Worst of 2007 awards are still over a week away, the year's game-award season kicked off on Friday with SpikeTV's Video Game Awards. Hosted once again by Samuel L. Jackson, the proceedings marked the fifth such annual event. It has also, by nature of being backed by an entire cable network, become the planet's most visible game-awards ceremony.

Though past VGA Game of the Year winners garnered some skepticism, the game that claimed this year's top prize was one of many deserving candidates. A panel of judges, including two current and former GameSpot editors--awarded 2K Games' BioShock (Xbox 360, PC) the year's top prize. The story-driven action title, set in an undersea dystopia, also took home two other prizes--Best Original Score and Best Xbox 360 Game.

BioShock's triumph in the latter category irked many fans of Microsoft-published Halo 3, which had to settle for Best Multiplayer Game and the soft-drink-sponsored, fan-chosen Most Addictive Game prize. Another Microsoft Games Studios Xbox 360 exclusive, Mass Effect, won the Best Role-Playing Game prize.

Though the 360 was well represented, it wasn't the only platform to see exclusives take home top prizes. Wii favorite Super Mario Galaxy won Best Action Game and Best Wii Game, while Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction earned the Best PlayStation 3 Game prize.

With the exception of Best Graphics winner Crysis and Best Handheld Game victor The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, the rest of the VGA winners were multiplatform titles--or in the case of Studio of the Year Harmonix, multiplatform developers. A complete list of winners is below.

Bioshock deserves as many awards as it can get, it's an awesome game. :rock

Super Mario Galaxy beating out God of War 2? I don't think so, terrible choice. :tap

Come to think of it...to me at least, there was no real big "stand out" game that really blew everyone away.

Halo 3 was great, but I think the story was somewhat weak and it just really "lacked" something I can't put my finger on. I'm not big on multiplayer so that didn't matter to me.

Bioshock was amazing, but it was the same ol' same ol' after a while...even with new powers and such.

I still have yet to play Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty 4, and a few others though.

I think 2008 may be a better year for games, especially the Wii and PS3 since they'll finally have a year under their belt.

i actually caught the end of the show on Sunday i think....i always enjoy listening to Mace Windu host stuff. the show is crap though....pure crap. it's good to see some of the games they preview, etc. though. the show is basically an adverstising whore. Dana White announced the new coaches for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, Don King announced a new game he is coming out with, blah, blah, blah.

It's fun, but it's so overrated. These games are great for parties and such, but they're all really just glorified versions of Simon Says.

Here is how I would have placed everything(these are not official results, I just got bored and made my own awards based on the nominees):

Breakthrough Technology means that they developed something new into the game engine.

Halo 3 had Forge and Saved Films
Crysis--well, that was a lot, lighting, physics, post-processing effects. A new game editor
Portal--The actual portals themselves, I still don't know how they do it, when you look into a portal you aren't seeing an image, it's another mesh, and it's flawless.
Rock Band-Probably all the instruments together plus the online stuff.

And sorry, but while Bioshock looks great, Crysis looks better, even on Medium settings.

WTF?!?!?!?! No wins for God of War 2!!!! Granted I haven't played any of the other games listed in any of the categories  but GOW was soooooo damn cool!!! They were robbed!! :monkey2:monkey2

Really wish I had an XBox360 so I could try out Bioshock. But oh well. I'm not getting another game console.

Yes I realized that, "breakthrough Technology" has been going on ever since gaming start though, so its nothing new. It's just that with every game that has "breakthrough Technology" I don't notice it as that, because games are always progressing and having new developments within the game.

Halo 3 had Forge and Saved Films (not bad, has been done in similar fashion before)

Crysis--well, that was a lot, lighting, physics, post-processing effects. A new game editor (yes it did look great, but that is something only a PC could do, the current systems could never make it look that good with a port)

Portal--The actual portals themselves, I still don't know how they do it, when you look into a portal you aren't seeing an image, it's another mesh, and it's flawless. (This was cool, but I mean I wasn't in ah and shock, because with the technology today what they did to create Portal was definitely feasible)

Rock Band-Probably all the instruments together plus the online stuff.(A guitar was already made for GH1, Cheap Bongos for Donkey Konga, so I mean I did not see it as breakthrough, more as just expanding on the previous ideas)

If you watched the whole thing, you lost hours of your life you won't get back.

Only thing I picked off of the news, and UT was this baby.

Seems SIM does exist, in videogame form so far. Possible the maquette is that of the movie?
