Hi fellow SSF board members! I'm very excited and happy to announce the completion of my newest ALIENS custom 1/6 scale figure! Introducing Rebecca Jorden....or as she preferred to be called "Newt"!

After showing her first to "figuremasterles" Les Walker, he gave me his kind approval of her. I am very proud and happy with her! It took some work collecting the parts for her. They included the Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace 1/6 scale child Anakin Skywalker figure, some Super Sculpey to make her hair, the hardest part to find...the overalls! I had to get them from the recent "John Deere Barbie" outfit set. Then I just painted over Anakin's light brown shirt, and dirtied it up with some dark washes of gray color. I also cut holes in the knees of the overalls like Newt had in the movie, and then painted the overalls to look worn out and dirty. I had to paint the big clunky Anakin boots since they were the same light brown color as his shirt. I also painted many layers of color into her hair to make it look dirty, and matted. I didn't want her to have perfectly clean blonde hair, becuase she didn't. She became quite the "tunnel rat" hiding from the ALIENS! Here's some more pictures of Newt holding Ripley's hand in the middle of all of my marines with the new power loader behind them. I still have a few things to do for her like painting Newt's name on her figure stand and get the "Casey" doll head she carried with her.

I'd appreciate your reviews, comments, thoughts about my Newt! Sure, I would definitely buy a Newt if Hot Toys ever made her someday. But who knows IF they ever will? If they don't I will always have a Newt I'm proud of making myself. :D

Really nice work Mike, looks great. I love the photos of Ripley holding Newts hand, straight outta the movies!

Great job on sourcing the overals, they look perfect. If you can find more suitable feet at some point I would recommend swaping them out since those Anakin boots do look abit bulky. Also why not put a subtle amount of dirt on her face too, in the movie she still looked like dirty even after Ripley wiped her face lol Like you said though, clutching a Casey doll head would really be the finishing touch on this great custom.

Yeah, I hope to find her some better shoes someday. But the "fun" part will be having to basically cut off Newt's legs under the knees and replace that part of her legs down to her feet, and then get some decent shoes for her.

I hated, hated....HATED...the beginning of ALIEN 3 where Newt, Hicks and even Bishop were killed off! :banghead: mad: James Cameron was upset in his commentary for ALIENS at how they opened ALIEN 3 saying not in so many words how stupid it was, after he had done so much work to save those characters at the end of his movie! I nearly walked out of the theater after they were killed...honestly I wish I had. ALIEN 3 was VERY disappointing to me. ALIENS is my favorite ALIEN movie, with the original ALIEN coming in second.

I will add a little "dirt" to Newt's face sometime this weekend. Thanks for your kind words about my custom Newt guys! It really means alot to me! :D

I hated the beginning of Alien 3 as well. It's like it invalidated the entire previous movie and made Ripley's heroic rescue of Newt seem pointless. Nobody escaped -- not even Ripley, since she was impregnated (somehow...) in hypersleep.

Thanks Les! It's always great to hear from you! Anytime I can get a great recommendation from you is a great day my friend! You are the best 1/6 scale figure face painter I've ever seen. I absolutely love your work! :D

Yeah, I agree that you and I won't be the ONLY ones with a Newt figure in our collections. It won't be long before other SSF board members here make ones of their own. Guys I'd love to see yours when you're done.

I totally agree with you icruise. I feel as angry as James Cameron about being upset with the beginning of ALIEN 3. I don't want to turn my own thread into an ALIEN 3 "bashing" thread. But after having such a strong emotional connection to the characters in ALIENS I truly cared about all of them. It really shook me up and hurt me emotionally when they were killed off. I have that kind of emotional connection with ALIENS. I think that is why I, and many others on this board have gone to such great lengths to put extra work and time into making the USCM marines, Ripley, Bishop, and now Newt as accurate as we can to what we saw on the screen in ALIENS. It really has become a "labor of love" putting those efforts into these figures. We truly care about the characters that much to put the extra time, money and effort into improving these already great figures from Hot Toys to get them to look the best that we can. :D

ALIEN 3 was a bad idea to me. I was such a HUGE fan of the ALIEN movies after the first one and the second one. But, in my opinion ALIEN 3 should have never been made. Fox should have ended the ALIEN story after ALIENS, and then that would have helped to clear the way in a few years after ALIENS for them to work on a much better ALIEN VS Predator movie. It could have been SO much better than the one Fox did eventually make. I had read all of the first Dark Horse Comics ALIEN VS Predator comic books and loved them. Fox could have taken at least one story from those and made a MUCH better movie using one of them. But...again this is my opinion as a fan of the ALIEN and ALIENS movies and the Predator movies. :D

I hope that AVP 2: Requiem is much better than AVP was!

Jamal

I totally disagree with you dude. Alien 3 was a masterpiece in its own right, the assembly cut version 2 hours plus long adds so much depth to the story. The whole idea that Ripley is seen as Temptation in the eyes of the prisoners as a test sent from god added a really good plot and character depth. The Alien being the harbinger of death if you will, in the eyes of the prisoners being sent by god as their redemption to atone for all their past sins is just an AWESOME plot and added something to the Alien universe which otherwise wouldnt have existed. I think the religion angle played out pretty well.

I have to admit I loved 3, the original is still the standout art movie that just happens to be supremely entertaining. A L I E N S was a good action romp, very North American (another Vietnam'esque feel, like 'Return of the Jedi' et al), but 3 had a much more European feel, their was a shread of optimisem in there, but it kind of spelled out to me that the bugs are a plague, a creeping cancer that we will NEVER stop, us with our arrogance, our 'supperior' fire power, our pointy sticks simply don't stand a chance.
It's survival of the fitest and these ancient creatures have us beat.
The loss of Newt and Hicks merely reinforces this.
Ripley is alone.
Her relationship with the doctor is almost instantly taken from her by the Alien again, as everything has been taken from her by it, as ultimately is her very humanity.
As humans we like to think we have eternal souls, and we will prevail, the alien has no such worries and is just as likely as us to have a soul (i.e not likely at all) it has no supernatural faith.
We are all alone and must face our demons....whoa dude, getting too deep there!

Resurection on the other hand.... hmmmm, had a few decent set pieces, but it's best taken as a slight asside. At least we got to see the bugs swimming!

I liked a lot of things about Alien 3, but I didn't like the way it fit in (or rather, didn't fit in) with the other movies. Read the IMDB listing for it and you'll be surprised how rocky the production was and how many alternative versions were considered (some without Ripley, some mostly centered on Hicks and Newt). I just watched the extended version of the film and I thought that the changes were not for the better -- it comes off as rather pretentious. The opening credits alone seem to go on forever.

Lose the current hair and use a USMC helmet and some real blonde hair

Just think the hair is letting it down atm

I like the idea of using the helmet. That would be cute and look more ironically "Newt." The hair is the weak point of this figure at the moment, I believe. I'm not a big fan of rooted hair on figures, either, though. I wonder if it's possible to do something that looks a little bit less "hat-like" and more like it's growing out of the head.

The outfit is very well done. I'm going to have to work on a Newt when I finish my Bishop (well, haven't actually started on Bishop yet since none of his parts have arrived).

Nice job Mike!

Before you cut the legs off at the knees, try removing the boots first. Just be careful, and use a dremel instead of the x-acto because you WILL get cut.
The ankles have lots of possibilities of attaching feet once you thin them a bit.

Well, thanks guys for your kind words! Mooncat I can't "lose" the hair since I've put the Super Sculpey on the head, then baked it on and painted it. I have seen Les Walker's awesome Newt where he used the cheap helmet from the Kay-Bee toy store ALIENS vs Cpl. Hicks set. I have that same set, in storage now, but I'll use that same helmet to put on my Newt someday after we get moved inot a bigger house where I can get stuff out of storage finally for display. I'll try that dremel idea for taking off the big Anakin boots someday. But, as it is right now I'm VERY happy with my Newt. Thanks again guys. I've appreciated your comments, tips and ideas and taken them to heart. :D

Here's my custom Newt now with a dirty face and neck. Before painting the dirt and grime look on her neck and face, I sealed the crack between the neck and the body with some Super Sculpey. Her head can't turn much left to right with the molded hair, but that's okay with me.

I still have to make a "Casey" doll head for Newt to hold, and put her name on the HT figure stand. But, I think I'm done painting her. So, what do you think now? I chose to paint her as she looked when Ripley and the marines first found her. I even painted some dirt on the tip of her nose....just for fun. :D

icruise
12-05-2007, 02:51 AM
I think it looks a lot better with the dirt, Mike. How do you plan on making "Casey"?

JediMike71
12-05-2007, 12:58 PM
Hi icruise. Well..the Casey doll head will be a challenge too. I know that the Sideshow POTA Cornelius comes with a small girl child's doll, and the head would be the perfect size since it is in the 1/6 scale. But I don't want to spend $30.00 or more for the Cornelius figure ONLY to get the doll, and then pop the head off of it for my Newt. Here's some pictures of the POTA Cornelius:

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z104/JediMike71/POTACorneliusboxedfront.jpg

This picture shows Cornelius and his accessories in his sealed box. Notice the small "human doll" as they call it, to his left? The head from that doll is the one I need for my custom Newt for the "Casey" doll head. It is the same one Les is using for his Newt.

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z104/JediMike71/POTACorneliusboxedbetterpictureopen.jpg

So, I will try to make one with some Super Sculpey. It shouldn't be that hard...I hope! I know Les Walker used the doll head from the Cornelius for his Newt. I'll keep searching eBay and other places online for a cheap Cornelius boxed or loose to get the doll. But, I just will likely end up making one from Super Sculpey. :D

I just found a Sideshow 12 inch POTA Cornelius figure at www.amoktime.com on clearance for $19.99. It's boxed too. That's not too bad. I may think about getting it sometime after Christmas...if they still have one left. But, I'll go ahead and make the Casey doll head from Super Sculpey and see how well it turns out.

I got in a "Casey" doll courtesy of our dear friend on this board...Les Walker! He sent me the doll, and I got it in today. I cut off its head, and now I finally have the "Casey" doll head that my Newt can hold! Check out my new pictures of her with it. Thanks Les! You save the day again my friend! :D

Now, all I have left to do for my Newt is print out her name on some black paper using white text for her nametag for the HT figure stand. Les....please tell me again how you got that to work. I'm having trouble in Microsoft Word 2007 doing white text on a black background and printing it out. It keeps priting black text on a regular white piece of printer paper. How'd you do it? Please let me know. Thanks again!

I dont know how Les does it but you could just highlight the text and set the highlighter to black. It would probably just easier to do in Excel if you have it and turn the background to black and your text to white. You can probably even find an alien font to download if you look around

That would work. Try laying out the copy in white font on a black background, and printing it out, until the size matches the other nametags. It took me a few runs to get it right. Hard to match the font too, so try it in different fonts and just print it all on one page, different fonts, different sizes, and cut out the whole slip of paper just to the size of the nametag, It looks perfect when you do that.

Note: Don't make the white letters totally white. To match the Hot Toys printed stands, use a very light grey blue. VERY light. It will look better next to the others.

(I lost all my tag layouts with my old computer Mike, or I would have simpley printed you out one. Sorry bro! )

Great job Mike! I think you're the first one to give Rebecca...sorry, I meant Newt, her very own thread! I agree she looks more Newtish (Newtlike?) all dirtied up and clutching Casey (KC?), and that the helmet you've got in storage will really complete the character. Looking forward to seeing all the other marines you're working on whenever you're ready to show 'em off.

Thanks Mudshark. Yeah Jamal, that figure I am using for my Dietrich is a Dragon "Jennifer" Army figure. I guess I could get another one later on for Ferro. I would have Ferro always wearing her helmet, and green jumpsuit, and her cool glasses.

Good luck on finding a reasonably priced spare HT helmet. I just finished getting all the parts for my Hudson and Hicks, and individual USCM components (in camo) are really skyrocketing in price in the last few months.

JediMike71
12-15-2007, 11:51 AM
Well, I'm going to use an old USCM helmet that I got from the "ALIENS vs Cpl. Hicks" two-pack from Kay-Bee Toys back in 1997. Les Walker used the same helmet on his custom Newt's head.

I will keep searching eBay, and other online retailers for sets of the Hot Toys marines armor, helmets, and all that. I have seen some lately for about $50 - $60 for a set before shipping from overseas. It'd be nice to find someone here in the U.S. selling sets of the loose armor. I'll keep looking...

I'll post the finished Newt up to this point on here soon. I did her nametag on the HT ALIENS figure stand a few days ago and I think it turned out well. I'll try to get some pics of it up here this weekend. :D

It'll take me a while to dig out and find that old Kay-Bee ALIENS set to get the helmet for Newt. I will likely not get it out until we move from our apartment into a bigger family house. Hopefully within the next 6 months.

Okay guys. Here she is. This is probably my last post in this thread. I wanted to show everyone my now finished custom Newt with her custom stand that reads, "REBECCA JORDEN "NEWT"" on it. I got the text to look as close as I could to the ALIENS text font. It may not be perfect, but it's good enough for me. Check out the pictures and let me know what you think. I'm done with Newt now, and ready to move on and finish my custom Cpl. Dietrich, and then get started on my custom Pvt. Frost after that.

Here's a "sneak preview" of my custom Cpl. Dietrich still very much "WIP" or "work in progress". I plan on working on her head some more, and then putting her correct last name on the "borrowed" Hudson nametag. Someday I'll get a set of the Hot Toys marine armor for her. I also put her name on the figure stand. It's hard to find the correct font style for the letters, so I just "winged" it. So whadda you think of her so far?

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z104/JediMike71/100_6728.jpg

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z104/JediMike71/100_6735.jpg

Yeah, I'll clean up around the lettering on the stands too with a fine-point black Sharpie marker, and fill in around the letters so it matches the darker black color of the stands.

I cut the names with scissors and then used some white "Elmer's school glue" to glue the names to the figure stands. I think it woked out well. I then painted some black acrylic carefully around the lettering to try to match the black color of the figure stands. :D

Has anyone evey asked why Hot Toys chose to print the "ALIENS" movie title on the figure stands in green instead of the correct blue color shown on all of the movie boxes, movie posters, and other memorabilia for the movie? I think it's kinda weird. I would hope they'd notice that the movie title has been printed in blue now for almost 21 years!

I still plan on getting my Bishop a 1/6 scale laptop someday too. I can't find them any cheaper than about $20.00 from a seller in Hong Kong on eBay. Anyone else find theirs cheaper? How about you pjam? How much was yours for your Bishop? Please let me know, and where you got it. Thanks!

I've used this place for some stuff and they have a selection of notebooks in 1/6 scale so might be worth a go...

Thanks Les! I'll paint some more black around the letters to get it to better match the black on the stands. I'll check out your link for the laptop "tigerfeet". Thanks guys! Merry Christmas! :D

I may still use that Dietrich as Ferro. If I find a female head that looks more like Dietrich. That's the "fun" part too. Finding existing heads that look like the remaining supporting cast in ALIENS.

I bought some loose Aliens figure stands from ebay, so when they arrive I'll have to try labeling them myself.

They had one laptop notebook that was sold out. I found one on eBay for a buy it now of $25.00, but it'll have to wait. The sold out one on store-rooms. com was $9.99.

After a little experimentation, I think I have hit upon a good way to print out labels for the Aliens bases. I tried printing them with my laser printer, but that doesn't get you a true black color, so I printed them out on my photo printer. It looks very good. The only small difference is that the photo paper is a bit glossy and the other Hot Toys bases are matte. It's so easy to print these labels, though, that I may just print them for all of my figures and then they will be uniform. The font I used here is Arial Black, which is not a 100% match for the one that Hot Toys used, but pretty good. I used different sizes since some of the names were pretty long, but in general it was 9 points for the title and 13 points for the name.

I just cut them out and used a glue stick to attach them to the base. I used a black marker to color any white parts of the paper that showed at the edges where I cut the label. No, I don't have Newt or Burke figures yet, but since I had to use a whole sheet of photo paper anyway, I decided to print labels for them. I'll probably end up redoing Newt's label, since it's a bit close to the edge.

Hey icruise, that's a good idea. But, I don't have a photo printer. I do have a laserjet printer. I struggled to get my fonts as close in shape and color as I could to the Hot Toys ALIENS ones. I will try your tips on my father-in-law's photo printer soon and see how it goes for me. Thanks! :D

No, I haven't really done anything concrete yet. I'm still in the "exploratory" phase, and I think I'm going to try Newt first in any case.

JediMike, did you buy the barbie overalls separately or did you have to buy the whole doll?

I was able to find the "John Deere Barbie" outfit including the overalls, a pink John Deere t-shirt, boots, socks, and a pink John Deere cap. I got it on eBay for about $20.00. But that beats having to buy the entire boxed figure at Wal-Mart for $40.00 plus tax.

I hope to make a Carter Burke "company slimeball" ALIENS figure someday. I think the hardest part will be finding an existing 1/6 scale head that looks like actor Paul Reiser. I'll keep an eye out for one.

Newt was tough, but for me, the toughest part was finding the 1/6 overalls, and then having to cut the legs on them to fit over the goofy big boots that the 1/6 Star Wars Episode I Anakin Skywalker has glued to his legs! Wow, that was "fun"! :monkey4 :D
