View Full Version : NEW CONTEST FOR ALL YOU ARTISTS!-Winner!

06-10-2005, 07:20 PM
Okay, I have 1 week to have a postcard made that Sideshow will use at it's booth and help us promote the board. So I need a design for the front of the postcard!

I invite submissions from all you artists out there - using Sideshow merchandise photos create a stunning postcard that represents the board.

The catch is I need it by next Sunday - June 19th. It should be 5.5 x 7.5 inches, 300 dpi, and should be deliverable as a CMYK .tif file. I'll only want to see .jpgs until we determine the winner. The winner will be judged by me and SSC personnel.

What's the prize you ask? Besides the adulation of all your fellow fans and exposure of your work at the largest geek gathering in the world? I don't know - but it will be cool.

So contact me if you're participating, because if no one's going to do it I need to make other arrangements. Also I can provide hi-res images of most of the product. Web images won't cut it for this project.

Email me with questions and if you're going to participate at [email protected] ([email protected]) with "Postcard" in the subject line. BUT I NEED TO KNOW NOW if you're planning to enter!

I'm in.
Where to get the high res shots?

06-10-2005, 11:26 PM
Hey High Elven. Check out the posts Dave made in other sections. I thought they were all the same, apparently they are not. I spied in one of them, how to get the Hi Res shots. Not sure which section it was in now.

So contact me if you're participating, because if no one's going to do it I need to make other arrangements. Also I can provide hi-res images of most of the product. Web images won't cut it for this project.

Contact Dave. He didn't mention how, but I would say an email is the best, the one mentioned above I'd say.

I'd love to be involved but while I love drawing I'm useless with involving a computer into the equation!

06-11-2005, 08:09 AM
FrodoEyes, why don't you draw something as guidance (???) for others create on a computer... consept art-like?

Did anyone understand this, didn't know the right words to use...

06-11-2005, 08:13 AM
Lol, I get ya! I could, but my friggin scanner's bust so I can't put anything onto my computer :(

06-11-2005, 02:39 PM
Dave, when I make it 300 pixels/inch it makes the file size at least 28 meg...
How am I going to send that?

Nemo Nint
06-11-2005, 08:30 PM
Save it as a TIF file, HE! :D

I dunno, but I'm guessing you're saving as a BMP.

Dave wants a CMYK TIF file, and that comes out to just around 1 MB for the 300 dpi, 5.5x7.5 inch image.

06-12-2005, 02:07 AM
Thanks Nemo, i got it just after i typed that.
Got it down to about 4 meg.

Not sure if I'm going down the right road but here's one design:

These are a bit rushed, so I need to cut the images out a little better... I'm also very hung over! :toast

Well, I'm sure they were very nice! And I think that we should give the prize to PS, purely out of trust that they were the best! I think a little red cross would be a grand design choice!

Here are mine. They are crappy quality for easy upload.-
Its very very simple but maybe effective.-

Here is another. Not sure if you can see with this small image, but Bonds cuffs, the one ring, Vaders buttons and Dracs medallion are all in full colour.
I think the text looks pretty good but if you guys dont tell me and I will change it-

Here is the very first one I did, its my favourite, but it is too comic specific for the project. It is my favourite but if it doesnt work it doesnt work-

Any comments on improvements would be grately appriciated.

Uhmmm......Dave, should I post a small jpg here to put in my entry or do you want a link to the sized tiff you requested (which would be too big to post btw)?

Just in case, here's a small jpg. I put in some random text which I thought fitted the postcard. But that could be removed as you requested an image without text.....right?

Some extra info on the postcard:

All images inserted are also available in 5.5" x 7.5" 300 dpi (in case you dont like the composition or only 1 image)

06-13-2005, 09:02 AM
If posting them here just use a small .jpg. And Eddie and anyone else posting their postcards - you have to change the mode to RGB for it to display on the web. Please keep the large .tif as CMYK, but for web purposes create an RGB .jpg.

Also I'd love to hear other members feedback on the cards already posted.

06-13-2005, 10:52 AM
HE is can't see any pics.

B Electronic
06-13-2005, 11:13 AM
Iluin, thats because they saved a .jpg file in CMYK colors instead of RGB.

06-14-2005, 08:25 AM
I can see all of them now. And they're very very good!
PS I love the 'They create it, we debate it' one, very true. I think SS will like that one too.
HE I prefer your favourite one too, but if as you say it's too cartoonish then I would opt for the first one I mentioned as my favourite.
The postcards are a great idea! Love the holiday snaps theme.

Thanks for the comments. The more the better! I cna't improve it without people letting me know what to do.

I'll start to tidy up my version and post a final clean version. I don't have much time to work on these during the week and next weekend is my birthday! :banana So I don't think I'll be in any state to use my computer! :yay :bonk

I just made another attempt. Got this idea for a postcard and went straight ahead and made it. And then made it again because my comp crashed due to insufficient memory (try having 5 high res images open in photoshop, running illustrator and browsing firefox on several pages with high res sideshow images on all at the same time.....damn computers cant do anything nowadays!! :mad).

Anyhow, here's the image:

Just in case, I could always change the word Babes into Class (or something in that range). You know, in case the women find it degrating. I just liked the word because we do have great women on our forums and we also collect female figures. That and most of the people on SDCC will be guys :lol

And just a little fun fact :lecture :
The background for Anna is the inner yard of the Bran Castle who, as you all know, is also known as Vlad the Impaler or Dracula.

Here's a close up as I think the detail of the background is lost in the above image (it sort of looks like newspaper print):

Remember, I have no hi-res images of Legolas & Gimli on Arod, so they might look a bit rubbish. But as soon as I get the hi-res versions, they're look sweet!

CONGRATULATIONS to Psycho Cenobite for the winning postcard! It's on the way to the printer as I type.

A lot of these designs were great - I'd especially like to single out HighElven who did 3 designs, all of which got high marks in the popular vote.

Psycho also won the slogan contest with his "they create it, we debate it" line.

Congrats Psycho and your special prize of....well, something special, is winging it's way to you as soon as I figure out what the hell it is!
