when i was in NZ people were talking about the new super LOTR DVD box set. I heard rumours that of the burning of the shire has been added!

Has anybody hear anything

The Scouring of the Shire was never filmed. If it had been we would have seen or heard some proof by now.

Scenes were shot showing Hobbiton in ruins and the Green Dragon on fire but these were just for the scene in Galadriels mirror.

There have been many rumours of another LotR Box set and what it might contain but I'm fairly certain there will not be any changes to the Extended versions of the films.

The most we can hope for is to see some Deleted/Alternative scenes on a seperate DVD.

There has been talk of PJ producing a HD DVD version in the future the boxset of which would also feature the documentaries made by Costa Botes.

Another rumour was that the films would be combined into one long film and told without flashbacks.

There WILL be a big boxset.A friend of mine who has worked on all three extended edition DVD's said they were holding stuff back for it from the onset.

Re: reply

Yeah, we've all heard this rumor but nothing has said it "is" coming yet. PJ has said in articles I've read he wants to do one but right now he doesn't have the time, and this set would have no footage added in just a couple extra discs with more stuff on them.

Given there's so much on the extended discs already, I wonder what would be on the alleged super box set dvds!

I ditto the desire to see deleted scenes and alternative shots and angles, blah blah blah.

I would like to see all the abandoned concepts, because there are a lot out there that sound interesting- I wonder what all was produced with regard to GilGalad bursting into flames as he is grasped by Sauron in the prologue.

but then, I can wait.

What I really want more than a super box set is the High Definition movies to be released with very little compression. Yes. I wish that.

Re: reply

In one interview with PJ (a couple years ago) he said that another DVD set wouldn't be out for quite awhile. I know I would hope for bloopers, audition tapes and of course more deleted scenes (as others have mentioned) on extra feature discs.

At least the super duper soundtrack set is coming out soon (soon meaning maybe a year or more).:dance

Re: reply

Sometimes taking a little distance/time from a project you have been so close to can give perspective (not to mention rest). The coming blu-ray/hd-dvd format(s) are the natural time for PJ to revisit his Epic. I for one would be delighted if he sat in the Editors chair for one last (very minor) polish.

wasn't there?

I coulda sworn there was some talk about PJ adding blood and gore into his films, possibly making it closer to an R-rating. Realistically, when you slice off a Fell Beast's head, blood would gush out!

I believe he talked about that on one of the film commentary discs. I can't recall if he was serious or just joking about it though. I know that he didn't have much of a problem having the films be less gory (then he's used to) to get a better rating but he wouldn't have been against having it (the gore) either.

Re: wasn't there?

AHG! THAT SUCKS! I didn't know, I must have missed that documentary. That's reasonable though since I have missed probably 75% of all the documentaries on the EE appendix discs.

Having a very minimized amount of blood in the movies has always bothered me, that's one of my most major unvoiced complaints about The Lord of the Rings movies. Another movie that came out recently that has the same effect is Alien Vs Predator- low amount of blood to bring the rating to kiddie level so it can be marketted for younger audiences for more money.

oh well, at least it came out so I"m happy.

True that! The first time I saw that I thought "hey that's really really weird looking.. where's the blood, for crying out loud!"

it's not like eowyn's sword was red hot when she cut the head off.. but who cares really.

One thing- there IS a nice pile of blood gushing in one shot in the movie- in moria, when Aragorn or Boromir chop the head off the one orc who is REALLY ugly, and has that nasty squeal voice... I seem to remember there being a momentary torrent of black blood.

Re: wasn't there?

I remember PJ saying something about how they could get away with showing blood with the orcs because it was black, and the censors wouldn't go after it like they would red blood with humans.

Re: wasn't there?

I could really care less about the blood issue. Thats a thing in flicks that I don't care about unless they go overboard with it.

Re: wasn't there?

There ARE times when Tolkien mentions just how bloody the War and the Battles are. In fact, I am not sure that Orc Blood isn't actually red. Anyways, we certainly got the clean version for the rating. I expect that people would really react to more brutal battle scenes, possibly alienating a lot of audience. But War ain't pretty - that was the whole point!

Re: wasn't there?

The siege of Minas Tirith was pretty harsh...much harsher (in the film) then I had expected. I was surprised and happy they had left in the "heads" scene (it was very memorable, brutal part of the book and I wasn't sure if they would leave that in the film). Sure, the film could have been more realistic in it's brutality with wars but it's amazing what was actually left in and the film still got under an "R" rating.

Re: wasn't there?

Just look at all the Blood spilled and shown in Bakashi's LOTR! Gandalf spilled some major blood there! :lol

I would only want a new LOTR boxed set if it contained something unique and different and not just a rehash of old stuff.

Someone mentioned flashbacks taken out? What flashbacks? The only ones I can think of are the prologues in each film. If that is the case the movie would still have Last Alliance, then Smeagol/Deagol and I guess the TTT prologue put in right after Gandalf falls from the bridge. But if you do that, the next scene with the fellowship in tears loses impact. It could be done if it cuts away after Gandalf falls and "dies". Then it would be a surprise when he appears to the 3 hunters in Fangorn. Of course, to be truly surprised, the person would have to be a LOTR newbee, having never read the books.

Re: wasn't there?

I think some Arwen sequences were flashbacks....?

I still want a 'book' version of the films, by that mean:

FOTR: The same as it is now...

TTT: First disc - have the Aragorn/Rohan story
Second disc - have the Frodo story

ROTK: First disc - have the Aragorn/Gondor story
Second disc - haver the Frodo story and the ending

I think it would work just as well as the format does in the book....you would get more into a particular characters story better, plus the Mouth Of Sauron scene would work well....if only it had been longer....sigh

Re

I'm a huge LOTR fan, but I can't really see replacing my three Extended Edition DVDs with regular DVDs. I'm happy to wait for the High Definition versions of the films. The screenshots that I've seen are amazing.

On Blu-ray disc

With the war raging on between HD-DVD and blu-ray format, you will never know eventually in which format it will be released... and so far there isn't a player thats compatible for both..

for from what I read, looks like blu-ray is going to win the war.. mind you the 2nd generation blu-ray is said to be able to go up to 80GB capacity, one 1 DISC will be able to take 3 extended versions of the movie...!!:clap :clap 8o
