So i started watching the EE last night at 10:30 and was glued to the screen for all four glorious hours. I LOVE this movie. There was a part of me though that wanted to stop and put in FOTR and have a full blown marathon that would have taken me through until.... well.. now. But I didn't. I still cried too... when Pippin and Merry are seperated... when Frodo banishes Sam.... the look on Aragorn's face when he exits the Paths of the Dead to see the Crosair ships sailing and fears defeat.... most of the plains of Gorgomoth ... Sam Carrying Frodo.. and the REAL kicker.. "My friends, you bow to no one." Gaaaaaaaaaaaaawd!
Such an amazing film. And I have come to the conclusion that Saruman was ABSOLUTELY necessary in the film. Yes it worked without him, but the scene is just so amazing... I couldn't imagine having to make that decision.

I think it was more so New Line decision to cut that scene out....:thwak
It worked but I always had the feeling something was missing and thanks to the extended DVD we all know what.....

Yeah, ROTK is really an amazing film I agree. Its one that I really enjoy watching as with the others. I even like watching the credits of ROTK to see the drawings and to hear into the west.

Quote:
I even like watching the credits of ROTK to see the drawings and to hear into the west.

I like that too.
But generally, I like it when any movie spices up their credits with interesting stuff like I think it was Finding Nemo had the fish swimming around the credits and then Mike and Sully make a cameo swimming in the credits.
Also movies like Anchorman which have bloopers in the credits. I just saw Spider-man last night, second time I think I've seen it ever (first time in the theatre) and it was a good revisit, and the credits were really interesting with all the webby designs around them.
oops sorry- this is about ROTK hehe- hi yes, I have only seen the EE of TROTK once, just after I bought it. Soon, probably this christmas season I'll watch it again with the rest of the EEs. I also quite liked the addition of the Saruman scene. Not for Saruman's death, which was quite thrilling, but for the setup of Theoden's character- thats what I appreciated most about the scene! Saruman and Theoden barking at eachother. sigh.

Yeah, plus I'm sure they do things to annoy you too. Bloody neighbours.
Saruman is vital to me, both to tie up events in TTT, and also to set up Theodens character - "Victory at Helms Deep does not belong to you, Theoden horsemaster" - "It was not Theoden of Rohan who led our people to victory" - "I go to my fathers, in whose presence I shall not now feel ashamed" -and also to set up events in ROTK - the palantir, Saurons motives etc.

Schuey I did a Trilogy last weekend. Had plans for one this weekend but that got changed on me :bang Though ROTK was on Starz the other night and I watched it through the credits with my eyes a bit teared. No, it wasn't cause of LOTR either something about Into The West and a Family member thats no longer with me.

Interesting -- I just finished watching all 3 EEs again.
Worst moment was seeing Sam carrying Frodo and knowing there would never be a WETA statue of it. It would have been wonderful.

Its really nice to hear that a lot of you are moved to tears by many scenes from this awesome trilogy, same here and not always scenes that are necessarily sad, just overwhelming if you know what I mean! BTW am I the only one that is DYING for the special CD box set soundtrack to have the full version of Arwen's lament for Eowyn from the Fileds of Pelennor to the Houses of Healing? I know its not Arwen but Liv Tyler but its a beautiful piece and we wants it!!!!

I will admit that every single time I see the end of ROTK, when Frodo says goodbye to his friends I cry.
I have the 3 Soundtrack special editions, don't know if I will spring for the box set.

I do tear up at other parts in the Trilogy I'll admit it. More parts than I probably realize.
I have the 3 CD set but I would get this special set because the music from this is so great and it's very very calming to listen to.

Personally for me there are many parts in all the films that get me teary eyed.
The main one for personal reasons is ROTK, starts approx at 1hr.37mins-2nd disc (not that I was counting :lol ) when Frodo and friends are back from their long journey and he is walking through Bag-End thinking of his book and about how to 'pick up the pieces of an old life', etc etc.:( :( .
-those few minutes really touch a nerve and never fail to set me off.
Then that leads on to the Grey Havens which I think affects us all.
I have started to end the film at the coronation to avoid this.

I've become disattached from the majority of the emotions in the movies because I've seen the movies a lot (for my standards for myself) even though it's far short of most people on the board- most, but fortunately not all, of the time watching the movies, all I see is the actors, I don't often see the characters and the actual story.
I have to really focus in order to really get into it.
But the parts that draw me in are the funny parts, especially in The Two Towers EE, which is why I think that's my favourite edition of the six Peter Jackson LOTR film editions.
However, I think when Gimli gets drunk and passes out is my most favourite funny moments from TROTK and I just completely get sucked into the story at that point.
Actually, I don't know if I want to see the movies again. I would rather read the whole story before I see them again, and that's hard to do because of the time consuming issue

I actually have yet to watch the extended edition. I was in the middle of moving out of my house when I bought it and I absolutly will not watch it until I have something worthy to watch it on. My in-laws 27 inch TV just aint gonna cut it. So in about a month and a half I will finally be able to watch it. I am very excited, I think it's going to be a marathon. Then I'll follow that up with a Star Was marathon. Funny thing is the runtimes are pretty smilar 3 movies vs 6.

I chose to necropost as opposed to starting a whole new thread...deal with it.:)
I am watching ROTK on a marathon on Encore right now. When the movie started, the sound was way off from the movie. I am not even sure if it was early or delayed, but there seemed to be at least 10-15 seconds difference.
But the actual reason I posted is because I have been a dedicated EE watcher since they came out and have not watched the theatrical versions since they were first released in the theaters.
I was surprised to see that not only did they add a lot to the EEs...but they actually cut a lot out as well. I am going to re-watch the theatrical versions and the EEs back-to-back and see how much of this I notice.

Like you, I hadn't watched the theatrical cuts since they were in the movies until a few weeks ago when I caught Fellowship on TV (theatrical version). If I ever had the time, I would like to watch both versions of each movie back to back to see which one works better. Of course, just having more stuff doesn't make a movie better. Could be the theatrical versions flow better somehow, but since the EE versions were released, they are all I've cared to watch.
The Ween
11-26-2011, 10:18 PM
I'm sure one day we'll be blessed with the complete version of the movies, with everything included from both. I'm thinking 20 or 25th anniversary editions.
The Josh
11-27-2011, 09:02 AM
IMO the EE are the best of the two versions. I love the TE versions and have watched them but the EE are the closest to the book, and TTT gives a better representation to Faramir as a character. As far as I know while they added a lot they didn't really cut anything in the EE.
TripleCP
11-27-2011, 10:36 AM
I can't really think of anything that was cut from the EEs, either. I guess there was a brief scene in RotK where Gandalf says it's safe to leave Saruman imprisoned in Orthanc, but that's about it.
The Josh
11-27-2011, 11:02 AM
Yeah, that was changed a bit for how it starts but that thing else I'm pretty sure is minor bits as the EE scenes were added.
TripleCP
11-27-2011, 12:47 PM
I will say that the EEs are for hardcore fans. If you have to talk someone into giving them a try (which was the case with me, originally...RotK was the only film I saw in the theaters), the added scenes of Treebeard musing about Entwives or Aragorn revealing his true age can be kind of distracting.
The Josh
11-27-2011, 12:53 PM
Yeah, I guess. As someone who has read the books countless times at this point I love the EE because of how much more they blend the book and the movies.
TripleCP

Yeah, I only became a rabid fan after the fact. Only a couple months after reluctantly renting a copy of FotR, I had bought the extended editions of the first two films as well as the books.
Now I'm the kinda fan that was bummed to learn that rumors that there still might be a third "bridge" film along with the two Hobbit films were false.
The Josh
11-27-2011, 01:07 PM
Well, glad you joined us among the rabid. LOTR is my favorite and for my two cents stands head and shoulders above things like SW, Indy, etc.
A bridge film would have been cool but I think the way they're including stuff within The Hobbit will make up for that.

Can you imagine the Tolkien grandchildren writing sci-fi crossovers or zombie tie-ins.
There will always be a place for SW somewhere in my brain but I have no desire to have statues from that franchise. I can't even really explain why without sounding like a jerk. Its like even a classic trilogy piece from a classic character is tinged with the last decade of drivel.
Now oddly enough Indy for me is pure fun. I take none of it too seriously.

Could not agree more. I've noticed over the last few years or so, LOTR has become a far better trilogy than SW. I use to really love SW, but now I am realizing how deep LOTR goes. I know they are based off of a very good book, but even the films do an amazing job of conveying that. The more I watch SW, the more it just seems like a fun ride, and no more. The more I watch LOTR, it seems I get something more/new out of it.

Shows how good a job PJ did with the films if it leaves you thinking more in depth about the lore of Middle Earth. The Hobbit lured me in many (many) years ago and I still love reading stuff Middle Earth related to expand on it's 'history'. A very good blending of book(s) and film(s) :lecture

I have all three and they're absolutely the greatest film score packages ever released. I recommend this book to go along with them, which discusses the music in great detail and also includes a disc of previously unreleased tracks:

The Lord of the Rings Symphony has also finally been released on CD, as well. Shore personally adapted his scores into a six part symphony that has been performed all over the world, and they finally got around to releasing a recording of it.
Lots of great stuff out there for those who appreciate Howard Shore's contribution to the trilogy.
