:lol

Blade Runner is definitely in my top 5, but Lawrence of Arabia edges it out.

I was lucky enough to see a restored print on the big screen back in the late 80s. I almost felt like I was in the desert.

Who knows what will happen after I see the Final Cut of Blade Runner.

I honestly can't choose just one. Mine is a 7-way tie:

http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/MG/143879_b.jpg http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/adc/10033218b_b.jpg http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/MG/196627_b.jpg http://shopping.yahoo.com/video/images/muze/dvd/sm/12/187212.jpg http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/MG/189530_b.jpghttp://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/21/shawrem_b.jpg http://www.tribute.ca/tribute_objects/images/movies/the_passion_of_the_christ/poster.jpg

And, of course, there are also the requisite masterpiece "geek" films: JAWS, RAIDERS, BLADE RUNNER, STAR WARS, etc.

I actually saw that too when it was playing in Cleveland... they had it in an old theater that still had balconies and one giant screen. Sadly a few years later it became a multiplex :cuss But seeing it like that was amazing.

YOJIMBO is outstanding and underrated. SEVEN SAMURAI (an irrefutable masterpiece) is only slightly better, imho.

But YOJIMBO still has my favorite exchange by a badass character ever:

Sanjuro: You're all tough, then?

Gambler: What? Kill me if you can!

Sanjuro: It'll hurt.

That's how I saw it where I am. It was a beautiful 70mm print. It was huge!

I was able to see 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind in the same theater. Sadly, they rarely show movies there anymore.

Yeah, the days of the real cinema experience are pretty much gone for good. Its still fun to see a great movie in a theater, but the event it used to be is lacking.

AHHHHH.....it's too hard to pick just ONE........Though I LOVE LOTR, Apocalypto, The Godfather 1 & 2, Gladiator, Galaxy Quest....I think I would have to pick this one:

Now that's a tough one. Many favorites out there!

Shawshank Redemption, Star Wars, Lotr, Back To The Future, T2... :monkey5

Migwit

I ab-so-LUTE-ly can't pick one. No way, no how. So like IrishJedi, I'll have to claim a tie, with all of these in the #1 spot (repeats to some that others have already listed, but this is MY list):

1. All About Eve
1. Shawshank Redemption
1. Alien
1. Double Indemnity
1. Blade Runner
1. Rear Window
1. Star Wars original trilogy
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
1. Lord of the Rings trilogy
1. The Thin Man collection (ALL of them!)

(Yes, putting the 'trilogies' and 'collection' up is even more of a cheat than putting more than one movie as my "all time favorite" but hey, as I've stated, it's MY list!) :monkey3 The nice thing about putting only number 1's is that I can add to the list in any order without changing any of the numbers!! :lol

Seriously, my list of 'favorite all-time movies' is much too lengthy to post (and I haven't even TOUCHED on Astaire and Rogers movies and have given barely a nod to Hitch****'s films.) There are just waaaaaayyyy too many, but I would have to say those above are the ones that have the most repeat 'viewability' for me. These are the movies for which I will stop flipping tv stations to watch, commercials and bad screen cropping and all, only to have my husband walk in and say "You know we HAVE this on dvd!". :D

NOTE: So for some reason I can't type the cinema master's name of Hitch**** without it giving me asterisks? Go figure...

An all-singing, all-dancing smorgasbord of sensational sights and sounds sure to touch the heart, tickle the funny bone and tingle the spine. Forgive the coming image mass here...I tried to make it easy...

My favorite movie…JAWS. Easy.
But, I love so many movies, that it is not easy for me to say so simply, so I say this…these…these top ten, for now, are my favorites…

(with sincerest apologies to many already listed, Seven Samurai, which I dearly love, Batman Begins, Amadeus, the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, which I cannot separate or consider in any form other than the full versions, the ORIGINAL 1933 King Kong, which I have loved since childhood and who’s main character I have actually held in my hands in my lifetime, The Shawshank Redemption, which remains the most watchable movie for me too…The Crow, which was utter brilliance all the way, Conan the Barbarian for it’s sheer power, and yes, even the much maligned but still cool as hell, original Highlander…beyond these, there are way too many to limit to lists or favorites like this.)

I consider the LOTR trilogy, SW saga, Indiana Jones films, E.T., Pirates of the Carribean trilogy, and the original Superman to be one giant film, so that's my #1 choice.

My #2 choice is all the movies of the 80's, Peter Jackson's King Kong, and Jaws.

#3 is Shawshank Redemption.

I somewhat agree with this. But sometimes, you just know.

Batman Begins has been my favorite movie since first seeing it opening day in the theater. Before that I would said the Star Wars trilogy (currently ESB). Before that I would have said Indiana Jones (currently RotLA). Before that I would have said Batman '89. Will I someday have a new favorite film? Probably. But as you see from this pattern, I like geeky Hollywood blockbusters most as opposed to artsy films.

Indeed ... sometimes you just know. No different with the Hall of Fame, I suppose.

The real test is the test of time. If its still your favorite after 2-years, or 5-years, or 10-years -- then maybe you have something. I tend to view with suspicion 'favorites' lists that are too recent. Particularly if the top movie was released within the week or month, or if several were released in the last year or two. In those cases, the lister is usually one of those that just picks the flavor-of-the-moment -- all hoopla, no judgment.

Avatar was on a LOT of favorite lists for a few months there. These days, not too many.

If I had to pick one -- it'd probably be 'Gladiator'. But, in all honesty, my favorite rotates depending on my mood. I can think of a top-ten ...

Gladiator
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Batman Begins
No Country for Old Men
The Departed
The Dark Knight
Black Hawk Down
Fight Club
Die Hard
3:10 to Yuma (Crowe/Bale)

Tried to put Bourne in there, but I couldn't decide which one, and I hate when people cite a trilogy on a favorites list without giving three slots for it.

Close, but didn't make the cut ...

Bourne, Inception, Cinderella Man, Lucky Number Slevin, Casino Royale, Goldeneye, LA Confidential, Man on Fire, Pirates of the Carribbean, Silence of the Lambs, Shutter Island, Star Trek (Abrams).

Tought I'd try a new response format. Rather than trying to pick one or making a top 10 list (both extremely hard if not impossible), I will select my favorite film and the two runner ups of each film genre. Unliked SnakeDoctor, I do lump a series together as one if and only if i likethe sequels. I note my favorite installment of a series in parenthesis. These genres and descriptions are from Wikipedia.

Action story in which the protagonist usually takes a risky turn, which leads to desperate situations (including explosions, fight scenes, daring escapes, etc.).
Favorite - Nolan's Batman Series (BB)
Runner-Ups - Inception, Casino Royale

Adventure story about a protagonist who journeys to epic or distant places to accomplish something.
Favorite - Indiana Jones Series (RotLA)
Runner-Ups - The Mummy ('99), Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

Animation use of computer renderings or drawings (or occasionally photos of representational objects, known as stop-motion animation or claymation) shown in a sequence in order to depict an action or event rather than using the filming of live actors.
Favorite - The Lion King
Runner-Ups - Toy Story Trilogy (TS3), Tangled

Comedy story that tells about a series of funny or comical events, intended to make the audience laugh.
Favorite - Dumb and Dumber
Runner-Ups - Anchorman, Robin Hood: Men in Tights

Crime story about a crime that is being committed or was committed. It can also be an account of a criminal's life
Favorite - Leon: The Professional
Runner-Ups - City of God, Good Fellas

Drama depends mostly on in-depth development of realistic characters dealing with emotional themes. Dramatic themes such as alcoholism, drug addiction, infidelity, moral dilemmas, racial prejudice, religious intolerance, poverty, class divisions, violence against women and corruption put the characters in conflict with themselves, others, society and even natural phenomena.
Favorite - Adaptation
Runner-Ups - Matchstick Men, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Fantasy story about magic and supernatural forces, rather than technology, though it often is made to include elements of other genres, such as science fiction elements, for instance computers or DNA, if it happens to take place in a modern or future era.
Favorite - Star Wars Trilogy (ESB)
Runner-Ups - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (FotR), The Chronicles of Narnia Series (TLWatW)

Historical story about a real person, event or time period.
Favorite - Gladiator
Runner-Ups - Catch Me If You Can, Lord of War

Horror story that is told to deliberately scare or frighten the audience, through suspense, violence or shock.
Don't like horrors

Musical story in which songs sung by the characters are interwoven into the narrative, sometimes accompanied by dancing.
Don't like non-animated musicals

Science Fiction Similar to fantasy, except stories in this genre use scientific understanding to explain the universe that it takes place in. It generally includes or is centered on the presumed effects or ramifications of computers or machines; travel through space, time or alternate universes; alien life-forms; genetic engineering; or other such things.
Favorite - Planet of the Apes (original)
Runner-Ups - Jurassic Park, The Matrix

War concerned with warfare, usually about naval, air or land battles, sometimes focusing instead on prisoners of war, covert operations, military training or other related subjects. At times war films focus on daily military or civilian life in wartime without depicting battles.
Favorite - Saving Private Ryan
Runner-Ups - The Last Samurai, Band of Brothers

Western devoted to telling stories set primarily in the latter half of the 19th century in the American Old West
Don't like westerns

I love movies. Period. There are so many that are my favorites. And there are so many I rewatch on a yearly, even monthly, basis, some blockbusters, some indie, ranging from quirky films, dramas, comedies, sci-fi, adventure, to flat-out action.

However, if I honestly had to sit down and single one out as a "possible" top favorite... well, then I guess I would have to give it to Batman Begins.

Honorable mentions go to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan, The Dark Knight, Gladiator, The Sixth Sense and Braveheart. Of course, I can't forget about Batman '89, which was my first theatrical experience. A little too much Batman, but whatever.

I'd say the best movie i've ever seen was Saving Private Ryan. I can't think back to a movie that actually had more significance and relevance. The intensity and graphic nature is not spared nor watered down. It's very blunt and in your face. Just like real war. It tells an amazing story of sacrifice during an ubelievably sad time in the human timeline. It's directed by Steven Spielberg who simply makes better movies than practically anybody else.

The Dark Knight Rises is my favorite movie. It completes the single best trilogy in American cinema history and the single best rendition of Batman ever put to film. It's a spectacle to behold in IMAX with it's picture perfect sound and crisp thundering sound. It not only is IMO the best of the 3 movies but it has the most epic ending i've ever seen to a movie. It's an amazing film that carries the weight of 2 other massively successful films (namely The Dark Knight) and does it with relatively minor flaws.

ROTS recaptured the essence of Star Wars in the first sequence, but dropped right after that!!

Fight Club is my all time favorite movie, but there's scenes in it that I have to skip over to enjoy the movie. It's a personal movie for me, so it's not something I want to watch with others. You know the rules!

For my favorite movie that I enjoy without skipping scenes is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest!

Good choice. One of my favorites.
Many forget this one is considered a plot twist movie. :D

Braveheart has been my all time favorite for as long as I can remember, but lately I've been leaning toward V for Vendetta.

I love a lot of movies. However, Braveheart has ALWAYS found a way to separate itself from the rest of the pack for me personally. No movie I've ever watched moved me more than this one. Since I've seen it, it has been my all time favorite.

Braveheart is an epic movie. While V is definitely a solid movie, I don't think it compares to Braveheart.
