PLEASE DON'T SMILEY SPAM

Tom had an excellent point:
...those that want to carry on actual discussions and stay on topic should be able to do so in the dedicated areas of the forum. We want to be attractive to new members and draw people into continued discussion and interaction, and if the whole site was filled with nothing but smileys it might start to keep certain people away.

So in the discussion threads outside the Sandbox please don't waste space with posts that don't advance the discussion.
Thanks.

I haven't been smilie spamming outside the sandbox for a while. I don't think. I will post a smilie in response to something but I usually don't go on my binges outside other or the sandbox.

I think we're talking about smiley spamming in dedicated discussion threads, not in the sandbox. A smiley is obviously fine at the end of a post, often conveying sarcasm, etc. so that the post isn't misunderstood. There are times when someone says something funny and you just want to chime in with a little :rotfl to show that you appreciate the humor. But posts consisting of nothing but ten smileys purely for post count padding purposes will probably get deleted when they show up in the main forums. (Check my alliteration in that sentence!)

Again--the sandbox is available and should be taken advantage of when you feel like smiling a lot. Make it a happy place! That's what it's there for, and nobody can complain when the threads there are derailed or become huge spam sandwiches. The same isn't true for threads in the main sections of the board.

That is a good question. I know we don't want to get mired in minutiae (mini-alliteration alert), but there does seem to be a difference between adding a post that recognizes and applauds a particularly funny or well-written comment, and something that is pretty obviously designed to attract attention TO ME!!, rather than the original applause-worthy comment.

Since the forum is configured to require at least ten characters in each post, a word or two and a smiley or two shouldn't be an issue. But what about smileys (even in small numbers) that are posted in response to another smiley-only post? Does that constitute padding? (I think it does, but that's just me.)

In short, what is the threshold for smiley-padding? Or will it have to be handled on a per-case basis?

It does seem that people are missing some of the point, though. The smileys are the symptom, not the problem. Whether it is post after post of

:lol:rotfl:lol:rotfl:lol:rock:rock:rock:rock

or

You rock! No, YOU rock!!NO, YOU ROCK!!!!!

the problem is really the same. Reading through a full page of posts that are really just "Me too!!" posts makes it difficult to get to the meaningful information in a thread, and often derails a thread completely. It's kind of disappointing to find a thread that has a title that sounds interesting, and the number of responses make it appear that it might have some really good info, only to find that after the second page, the "useful" information has been overcome by smiley banter.

(The "quotes" above are for simulation purposes only, and are not actual samples taken from the forum.) :)

That is an excellent point and I completely agree! While we don't want to stifle conversation and discussion, it's also not much fun to wade through a lot of posts that add nothing to the topic.

Posts filled with 5 or more smilies/emoticons and nothing else, and threads derailed because of an abundance of smilies/emoticons are all acts of immaturity.

It's comprehensible why Dave, Lonnie, and Tom would like to see that come to an end. However, do they fail to see the medium that these forums are derived from? We're talking about adult collectors who collect... wait for it... TOYS! And we're not talking about electrical gadgets or cars here, but actual action figures, dolls, statues, etc.

So of course some immaturity will ensue... a lot of us haven't grown out of our playing with toys phase or the fact we still watch cartoons and play video games.

Heck, you have members like P!tu who wear clothes from his closet that date back to when he was 14. Apparently P!tu continues to regress and is now down to wearing a bib and diapers. So you maybe hardpressed to get some of the posters on here to fathom your mission.

We're surrounded by immature Freaks on SSF. Yes, yes, we have our fair share of very mature Freaks as well, but they are all lost in the heap of smilie-filled posts.

What?! I am just saying!

On a more serious matter, yes I can see Dave, Lonnie, Tom, and RoboDad's points. Especially when you go into a thread that peaks your interest, only to find what originally started out as a conversation about the next general election is now a thread discussing that Bert and Ernie were the first gay couple on cable television... or three pages worth of :rock or :rotfl <----- that. I can see how that could become annoying especially to that of the original person who started up said thread.

Now that is funny!!!!!
And I see your point and raise you 2! It's easy for threads to get derailed, but if they are worthwhile threads (in my opinion) someone always gets them back on track. Are we supposed to start a new thread everytime someone's comments/observations make us think of something that's a little off topic?? Just a question....if that's the case I should have started about 1000 threads by now. :o

As for what was said about P!tu, I was just teasing. I have to add that in there because I don't want to be the one to bring down the guy's day. He's very emotional you see.

He maybe a thread-derailing-attention-wh.ore-mongrol-seeking-missile, but he's a good guy. I think we've been a little hard on him recently.

I believe that with the new, "Just say no to smiley spam posts" legislative put in place on these forums, will hinder further posts of the aforementioned from happening on a constant basis.

A little off topic occasionally isn't a bad thing, and as mentioned, if it is a valid discussion of interest, it will get back on topic quickly in most cases.

Boards that are overmoderated are no fun and eventually people get turned off and stop visiting. However, the same is true for boards that are undermoderated where every thread is derailed and full of junk and flame wars.
