Maguire, WB attack the big screen with 'Robotech' (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i1f2de64a1d24bd55d67832dedc4bd442)
After slipping on a mask for Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire might be slipping into a giant robot for "Robotech."
After a lengthy negotiation, Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up the rights to bring anime classic "Robotech," which featured giant robots known as mechas, to the big screen. Maguire is producing through his Maguire Entertainment banner and is eyeing the lead role in what the studio plans on being a tentpole sci-fi franchise.
"We are very excited to bring 'Robotech' to the big screen," Maguire said. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."
Drew Crevello also is producing through his Supercool Hollywood BigTime Prods. Craig Zahler ("The Brigands of Rattleborge") has been tapped to write the screenplay.
"Robotech" was a cartoon series during the 1980s from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.
A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.
Frank Agrama of rights-holder Harmony Gold will exec produce; Jason Netter will serve in a producer capacity.
The success of DreamWorks/Paramount's $311 million-grossing "Transformers" has other studios looking to assemble a giant robot movie of their own. Last month, Regency picked up 1980s Japanese anime series "Voltron," with Mark Gordon attached to produce. Ironically, Warners had the first giant robot movie back in 1999: Brad Bird's animated feature "The Iron Giant."

Some really good choices in there, especially Nathan Fillion as Roy Fokker and Seth Rogen as Ben Dixon! :rock

I just hope Tobey gets Rick Hunters hair right. . .

That IGN article is interesting. I like all their pics except for Tobey as Rick and Gyllenhaal as Max. Neither really fit as far as I'm concerned. Either way, I'll be happy to see this brought to the big screen. It will be interesting to see the types of choices they make as far as mecha design and story. I love Robotech, but I don't think a faithful adaption would have the general audience appeal that a tent-pole summer movie needs.

This is excellent news. I was very much against the Transformers movie after the preview. Boy, was I wrong! I am ready to fully back this film.
I can see Tobey as Rick Hunter as long as he has good chemistry with whomever plays Lynn Minmay.
How about Maggie Q for Lynn Minmay? She may be too mature but damn is she fine!
I also demand a strong Roy Focker, maybe Viggo Mortensen or Eric Bana.
Can't wait to see the giant Zentraedi, I love Breetai.

Maggie Q is beautiful, I wouldn't mind seeing her as Minmay.
Roy Fokker was a young, handsome hot shot, Viggo and Bana would definitely be a bit old and too strong for that role. I still think Nathan Fillion would be perfect, he even has the hair down, all they'd have to do is give it a bit of a blond tone to it.
I always thought Roy was a bit older. Definitely a hotshot, but it seemed he was in his mid to late 30s. Fillion would be a good choice, though.

I would love Nathan Fillion as Roy, but the young hot shot is Rick Hunter, not Roy Fokker.
Roy is no less daring than Rick but he is supposed to be older, 30's or so. Plus, I can't see Tobey Maguire calling Nathan Fillion "older brother." They are practically the same age! Or, they look pretty close in the age dept.
If Rick was being played by someone younger, like say Shia LaBeouf or Daniel Radcliffe, then Nathan Fillion could "fill" the part. But, if Maguire is going to play the lead, it will probably be Rick and we would need an older Roy and I think Viggo or Eric Bana would be fit the bill.

Yeah, I see what you mean, but we wouldn't want Roy Fokker looking too old. I like Shia and Daniel, I just wouldn't like them for this movie, so if I had to settle for anything I'd take Viggo or Eric Bana.

This is actually a sad bit of news for me; not because I don't want to see a spectacular live-action rendition of Robotech, but because its been a dream of mine that I'd one day be the one to make such a movie. An unrealistic goal, to be sure, but one I've had for over a decade. My one 9-minute Super 8 film made during my semester at the Portland Film Center certainly didn't propel me to A-list director status like I hoped. :lol
Well good for Warner Bros and Tobey Maquire, he'd actually make a pretty decent Rick Hunter. I hope they do a great job.

Leelee as Miriya? Eastwood as Gloval? Jake G as Max!?!? Horrid picks.
Gloval's look was made for Edward James Olmos and Jake G would look stupid portraying Max's character, they need someone very subdued and almost mousey.
I hope they still give Max is trademark Blue hair and Miriya her green locks....

The Shodow Chronicles movie was great, it is from the original Robotech cartoon. Some of the characters even have the same voices. Shadow Chronicles is based on the last saga of Robotech, Genesis Climber Mospeada.
If you are a Scott Bernard fan then you will like this movie.
I loved it and hope they make a sequel.

Damn it, still haven't seen this! I always say I'm gonna buy it when I'm at the store, but something else always catches my eye. Gotta pick this up.
It's funny now because all of my favorite things as a kid are being brought back to life. Most things are done pretty well (Spider-Man) and some things are completely destroyed (Punisher). I actually enjoyed the Transformers movie. I really think they did well with Transformers considering what they were working with.
Now, as for Robotech....I've always seen actors in movies and thought about them in a live action Macross Saga. Some of those actors may or may not work "now" as well as they would have years ago. I always thought Jennifer Grey (of Dirty Dancing fame) would have made a perfect Lisa Hayes and Anthony Rapp (Dazed & Confused) would have been cool as Max Sterling.
As for choices of Nathan Fillion as Roy & Tobey Maguire as Rick, I think that could work. I do think that for Minmay you need an actress who has an Asian schoolgirl look (which is why I'm surprised so many people pick American chicks for the role) and with Lisa, she definitely needs to "look" like she's older than Rick Hunter (we all know that real life age matters very little in films).
As for my choices? It would be easier to show them than name them. I put this together in paint shop for fun....

I've got one of the Bernard Cyclones that I traded some 1/6 stuff for a few years ago. It's in great condition. I would SO love Hot Toys or Sideshow to get the license to do 1/6 figures and armor. It would be killer. I would be poor.

Some Film news:
UPDATED: WOULD YOU LIKE SOME LAWRENCE KASDAN WITH YOUR ROBOTECH?
* By Russ Fischer
* Published 06/16/2008
* News
*
I just got a call from Devin, currently waiting to see Wanted, because he got a call from a good source about Lawrence Kasdan being the new writer for Robotech.
Wait. That movie is actually happening? We thought that was an established resident of pipe-dream rumorland. The last news was that Tobey Maguire's Maguire Entertainment was developing the picture for Warner Brothers, and for a while there was a relatively unknown guy named Craig Zahler on script duties.
But Kasdan puts a whole new angle on it. Sure, he's got Dreamcatcher lurking between now and when he wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark, but bringing someone like him to the table means this could actually be happening. Be on the lookout for more details in a few days.
UPDATE: The trades have started to take the story. Thanks for the scoop credit, THR! Or not. Their coverage does at least include one (dismal) new piece of info: Akiva Goldsman has come on board as a producer, with Chuck Roven.

Gough and Millar to Write Robotech
Source: The Hollywood Reporter November 17, 2008
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have been brought on to write Robotech, Warner Bros.' adaptation of the anime classic, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven are producing with Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello.
"Robotech" was a 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.
A sprawling sci-fi epic, Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.
Lawrence Kasdan wrote a previous draft. Gough and Millar worked on The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and Spider-Man 2, among other films, and were showrunners on TV's "Smallville" for many years.
