MSRP of Weta T-Rex v. Kong statue changed to $495!!!

I had seen the higher price advertised at Alter Ego, and was hoping it was a mistake. Today I got an e-mail from Bob saying that the MSRP had changed, and the new Fireside price was $345. I immediately cancelled my order.

How in the hell does Dark Horse think they're going to sell 3000 of these at that price for a movie that hasn't even come out yet?:dunno I'll probably pick up an art print, but if the rest of the statues rise in price like this, I'll never get any of those. Just another reason that I wish the license had stayed with Sideshow.

From what I understand, there were two statues that saw a rise in price and the rest are (hopefully) remaining the same. Those are the Rex vs Kong and from the Narnia line, the White Witch. AlterEgo lists the White Witch as now having her dwarf Ginarrbrik sculpted alongside her, which explains the price increase. Not sure why the Kong increase though.
As far as edition size, I think these are all "estimated to be limited to 3000." So not necessarily 3000. :dunno

Well at least that makes the increase much easier to take. I didn't realize that Weta could set the prices. I thought that they sculpted the pieces, and Sideshow/Dark Horse decided the prices. Thanks for the clarification.

This thing with Weta and Darkhorse is a bit different than the relationship Weta and Sideshow had, bascially Darkhorse is just like Diamond Dist., they are handling the distribution of the item, not creative rights as far as I know on the major pieces...

I'm staying away from both lines, too much already on order with SS. But I also think that both lines aren't going to sell that well. Narnia I think is targeted more for "kids" which none will be buying statues. The Shrek Bust and statue is availible which is a hugh movie and these are still availible at LE 3000. King Kong is ok, but do I need the statues? And the editions are already too high for both lines and both being first runs. How well will they do? They appeal isn't there to sell 3000, which means lower prices on ebay, etc, etc,.

I may get the Rex v. Kong later next year if prices hit rock bottom, but I would have paid the previous $245 for the piece based on looks alone. I can't justify that price on a film that I might hate.

I am still not sure what caused the price increase.
I figured they should have keep the price TBD if they were not sure.

It's not any bigger than Sauron, and is actually shorter. I know which one I'd rather have, and for $195 less. I may get the Kong v. Rex next year if I absolutely love the film. I'll most likely be passing now.

Kong v. T-Rex's dimensions:

21.65" H X 16.14" W X 14.96" D

Well remember that Sauron is one complicated piece that IS huge and if SS were to reprice that it would certainly be more.

I guess thats the point of the thread though, that SS wouldn't go changing a price like that!!! OK, now I'm mad, what are they thinking changing a price like that?! The dirty Rats!>:
