View Full Version : Best Transformer toys?
Darklord Dave

I've never been into Transformers, I always thought it was a pretty lame concept and I thought the designs looked awful. But after seeing the movie the designs have grown on me. But I went looking online for Transformers that looked like their movie counterparts and also transformed, and aside from the Ultimate Bumble Bee, there doesn't seem to be anything out there?
Am I missing them?

I'm on the same quest Dave. I bought Hasbro's 10" Optimus Prime, and while a great figure and close to his look, for the ability of a toy to transform, they sacrificed some of the film design. Ultimately, I care most about Finding an Optimus Prime that looks just like the screen Prime, and I hope someone will make it if they haven't yet, but if one comes out of Hasbro, it'll have to be a specialty figure like the 20th Anniversary Prime figure.

The "Leader class" Optimus Prime is a pretty good rendition of the movie Optimus.
In case you didn't know,Hasbro divides their TF toys into "classes" and gives them little spiffy names...these classes share the same price point. For example..the two Leader Class figures out are Optimus Prime and Megatron...they will be joined by Black-out soon as well.Voyager class figures are Starscream,Ratchet, and Ironhide...and then there's the Deluxe which are Bumblebee,Scorponok and a few others. If there's any TF fans who know more about it than me then please speak up.
I picked up the Target Exclusive "Robo-Vision" Optimus Prime which is the upcoming Voyager (around ~$20) Class version of Optimus Prime that hasn't been released yet.The difference between this version and the normal one is that the Target version has some part painted a more silver, metallic color. He does transform as well.
He's pretty cool for his price point and in terms of design...nevertheless...the Leader Class Optimus is pretty cool-looking as well.

hopefully Takara(Masterpiece) and Hasbro have been working on Optimus and Megs from the movie. i know the MP G1 Megatron took them like 3 years to go from concept to final production. One would think they would have had the ones from the movies in the works to put them out during the optimal selling window...which is right now but I haven't heard anything.
to produce one that looks like the pic above in robot form and also has the correct big rig truck form would take some time.

That's the hope that Takara and Hasbro are working on a Masterpiece version of movie Prime...that would be really great.

As much as right now would be a great selling window, and as much as the large, high quality, $80 figures are more for collectors, they are still at heart toys, and believe, you're going to see an onslaught of Transformers toys come November for Christmas shopping season, and I'll be some convenient DVD releases too. Neither of which will break my heart and will satisfy me, but it's just a fact of marketing subject matter such as this.

My mind changed. I remember loving them as a kid, but I haven't had anything to do with them since, and now I'm like a kid again. I bought a movie prime, I ordered Hasbro's 20th Anniversary Prime tonight, I won the G1 Prime remake figure off eBay tonight, I'm saturating myself with Optimus merch, which is why, like Dave, I'm hoping for a film accurrate version, it's such a nice design.

I could see my mind changing if I like the movie enough...it has happened before. Hopefully it won't though...I can't afford any more toys. :lol

That's what im saying, those Hasbro toys or whatever at walmart just looks way too dumbed down.
I dont think any figure or toy can replicate the intricate designs of the movie models. Only a statue can.

I think a toy can duplicate the design, HOWEVER, not while keeping transforming ability, you're not going to make a toy that can form a truck through the magic CGI can. If you even watch the transformations on screen, they go from such huge robots to small vehicles in some cases, so there's definite movie magic there, so just make a transformed prime in his Autobot state that looks just like the film design, give it some articulation and you'll be golden. I'm sure many could care less about folding him into the truck and just want his Autobot appearance, and if you want to make him a truck, get the figure I posted, it's still a cool figure of him, and nice to have transforming ability, but to do that they had to change his look. I wish it had come with his sword feature too, that was badass.

You won't get a perfect toy that's the same as the movie version, it just isn't possible, there's a bunch of stuff that just comes from nowhere, and many pieces that are too small to make in a toy. Plus I think Prime had like over 10,000 moving parts. But I would really like a robot version statue that looks like the movie, that'd be cool. It looks like the Ultimate Bumblebee figure is the most accurate.
I agree statues would be the best way, and I hope they do them. Either MR or SSC
as for the bumblebee toy, im still unimpressed. just look at the chest area, blehhhhh.

That'd be cool, I hadn't thought of a 2-pack senario to have both forms made film accurrate, I'd buy that setup too, but at minimum, we need screen matched, transformed versions, they're just too cool not to have.

We're talking about the first wave of Hasbro's take on the Master Piece Prime, which was released in 2004, with the Generation 1 debut date of 1984... thus he was appropriately named 20th Anniversary Prime. However, the second wave Prime was based on the 20th Anniversary of the Transformers animated Movie, which came out in 1986. That one you're referring to came out in 2006 and has no battle damage and his grill is not chromed like the original 20th Anniversary Prime and Takara MP01/MP04 versions. And the gun is a hideous blue and yellow, which I have no idea why that was the case. Sadly, it was.

Ultimate Bumblebee isn't exact to the movie version, but has the feel of it better than any of the other toys.
So Megatron is a P-38? In the cartoon when he transforms does he just lay around waiting for a human to use him against the autobots?

Yep, by far your best option for a Prime is to either get the First American Release of 20th Anniversary Prime, or cough up the extra money for one of the Masterpiece versions.
I just recently got a Masterpiece from a board member and comparing him to the first 20th Prime you see little differences. The big ones are (as already mentioned) the shorter stacks and added battle damage. But aside from the that the quality is equal on both and to date this is the ultimate version of Prime.
Although I was unaware of the MP-04 with a fuggin' trailer :cuss While I'm sad I won't have that... I honestly wouldn't have room to display him :lol
Another good option for the Prime is the Medicom Metal Force figure... he doesn't transform but is probably the best looking if you want him to be just like the cartoon:

The thing that gets me is if they were able to put out a better quality figure before, why couldn't they duplicate it? They had more than enough time to make it the same as the first release, it seems they just wanted to save on materials and cash in on the DVD release. This could've been an awesome figure with the stand it came with but turned out to be a dissapointment.

Frankly I'm not sure how anyone could fail to notice this. Maybe I just guess I expect collectors to be better informed about what they're collecting, and the nature of the trailer release (as well as the Megatron attachments) was extensively covered on every major Transformers news site.
Besides, any company that brings us smallest Transformers Dinobots is pretty okay in my book.

For the tv show accuracy, the Hard Hero statues are awesome... i just love the detail that the Palisades statues had.
LOVE Megs' expression in the Hard Hero statue.
They were nice I'll admit, but the HH versions hold a special place in my heart because they are Cartoon accurate.

Question about the Masterpiece Prime. Does the add on Trailer you can buy by itself work with the Hasbro issues 20th Anniversary Prime figure?

Sure does, BUT it DOES NOT open up like the one that comes with MP-04.

Thanks. Since I have the Hasbro on the way to me, I was thinking about getting the trailer to have the look, don't need it to open, and I've seen some reasonable deals for it around, so I may pull the trigger on it, thanks again for the info.

Word of warning on the Hasbro Prime, he doesn't hold his gun very well. He can hold the Megatron gun perfectly, but for some reason his gun doesn't want to stay in his hand.

this guy posts on some other boards and frequently shows us his customs. he then puts then on ebay.
this is probably one of the greatest transformer toys out there right now (in my opinion) - as soon as i get it, I'm going to customize it exactly like that.

I got my Hasbro 20th Anniv. Prime yesterday, wow is it an amazing figure. At first, part of me thought it was kinda pricey, even at retail, for a "toy" but they really went the distance in quality with this piece. My only gripe with it is I wish the display base audio was Peter Cullen and not some voice actor that really doesn't even resemble him.

just saw the movie and i'm in awe! never thought i'd live to see a live action, hardcore Transformers movie, but man what an experience!
so how's the Ultimate Bumblebee? i hear it's got animated arms and parts. it doesn't literally transform by itself does it?

When it comes to Transformers, I look into how fun is the transformation. Sculpt and articulation are important, but secondary. I avoid figures showing excess robot kibble in vehicle mode.
Just as with SW and any other huge property, everyone enjoys it for different reasons! A lot of newcomers have joined the fray, but they probably got hooked on TF for different reasons than a G1 fan, or Japanese Beast Wars fan.
So, the best toy depends on your taste.

Jin is a great guy, very talented and skillful at customs...he frequents another board I go to and shows his stuff off there as well as never hesistating to give any advice out either.
Yes, he does end up turning around and selling his custom work, but he does a fantastic job at them and he really...really made a killing off of that Bumblebee....WOW!
DAMN...all his customs are going high!

they look great but what did that guy actually do to make those customs? from some stuff i've read it seems like he took existing mass marketed 6" figures and did some resculpting and painting, or did he do more than that. i'm totally unfamiliar w/ what TF toys are out right now so i'm not sure how different his customs look from the original mass pieces.

for the most part, it's just paint. on starscream he added claws instead of the missiles for his hands. there are a few other things he did, but again, mainly paint!! crazy!!
