I like your ideas but your prices are worse than Sideshows. I would, of course, need them all, but might have to revert back to ebay for some at those prices. :lol
And not including the TV series!!! Blasphemy!!!
Stickman
08-23-2005, 11:28 AM
You're right about the prices being high but I tried to allow for a $10 - $15 price cushion. I wanted to seem as realistic as possible. SS has been charging close to these prices without changing head sculpts or including any major accessory. Besides having new sculpts these would have low production runs so the price would have to be swallowed by the collectors.

Good point, but with Sideshow having just about the highest prices for their own product, they could absorb that minor cost unless providing significant accessories.

I would love to see this line saved. But we must try to be impartial and as realistic as possible in regards to expectation. We will never see the kind of roll out Sideshow did initially with the line... announcing 5-6 figures at a time. Best case scenario, we could possibly plead a couple more figure from them.
Rabid fandom offers it's own brand of clarity... one that is rarely shared by people outside your collective bubble (or your own mind). So getting carried away with possibilities (see Stickman's list) is not the way I think we should approach this. Don't get me wrong... I think that most if not all of Stickman's choices are inspired ones... if they were suggestions for an already healthy figure line. As we all know, that is not the case with the Apes line.
I think that IF we were to mount this we should not let our "fandom" get in the way by asking for elaborate additions to the line. REMEMBER, to the suits at Sideshow, the PRIME APES of the classic film series (Zaius, Cornelius, Zira, Ursus) with modest edition numbers DID NOT SELL. Some retailers have stopped ordering Ape figures altogether from Sideshow due to slow sales (I know the store where I bought the first wave of apes did not order any of the Beneath stuff). So our selections should reflect that... some item that could be offered as an exclusive to the Sideshow website with a modest edition size. If I had to choose, my personal favorite figure to be made would be Virgil. But I fully understand that he is not a realistic choice given the circumstances. It would only categorize my selection as a "fringe" one. I doubt that this figure would sell the amount needed to break a profit.
A reasonable selection could be Caesar from Battle. In fact, I'm surprised that he wasn't offered up as an exclusive in the same way that Astronaut Brent/Slave Brent was. The existing Caesar exculsive (with a mere paper circus poster as the SOLE bonus accessory) only underscores Sideshow diminishing faith or interest in the whole Ape line. Sideshow already has the Caesar head made and the clothing patterns from their Cornelius figure at their disposal. They could offer this figure with very little added cost to themselves... therefore they can offer it in a low edition size AND perhaps make a profit. Which is why they would make the figure in the first place... to make a profit...and not to simply fulfill some entitlement that we Ape fans seem to think we have.
Also the set of Ape-O-Nauts, as a selection, with the use of two pre-existing heads and the creation of one pattern for all three spacesuits, might prove to be a solid consideration. In terms of demand, the Ape-O-Nauts are from an iconic moment within the WHOLE film series which would also, perhaps, help sales. However, packaging them poses a problem. Should they be offered separately or as a set? If you make them separately then Sideshow might find themselves saddled with the one that doesn't sell. Also individual boxes for each figure might prove to be more labor intensive for Sideshow. Also, do you make two Ape-O-Nauts or three? A boxed set of three Apes might be considered too expensive even for the rapid fan (I would buy one in a second, but that is me). A set like that might find more buyers on the secondary market when the price bottoms out... which does Sideshow no good. Perhaps a two pack of only Cornelius and Zira in space suits might be a good compromise.
Another possibility would be General Aldo... although not my favorite ape (I'd STILL get him though). He could be constructed using already fashioned parts and accessories... perhaps saving enough on materials to allow for a whole new head sculpt (as a proper Aldo would have to have). In this regard, an Urko or Galen figure might also be a possibility, even though the television series is deemed by the general collecting community (sorry Ironman) to be less worthy of representation... less classic. Sideshow might not want to dip that far down into the world of the Apes.
The underlining question is simple. What amount of figures does Sideshow have to move in order for the figure to be considered, in a business sense, a figure worth making? I do not know the answer to this question. I can only assume that it would have something to do with the amount of energy and material brought to bear to create the figure. SO that number would end up being on a sliding scale depending on the figure.
All I'm saying is that we need to keep this in mind... to keep a proper perspective of the situation... if we want to see any additions to this wonderful line. It will be an uphill battle...
SO NOW FIGHT LIKE APES!!!

Then I'd have to vote for a new sculpt gorilla preferably Slave Aldo in red Jumpsuit. I agree with your idea of the Ape-O-Nauts being iconic to Escape from the POTA, I also feel that the gorilla in red jumpsuit is iconic to Conquest POTA and would be a strong choice for future figures.
Morgan the Raider

My choice would be an Ape-O-Naut. All three would be great, but I'd settle for any one. A gorilla in red jumper from Conquest would be a solid second choice.
I'd also love to have Urko from the television series. He'd be an easy one since they already have everything they need to make him happen.
Iron Man, I'll be sending you my info, so you can add me to your list.

I agree, this would also be a great suggestion to present to Sideshow.

I think ProtoZaius is right in his thinking.
Sideshow can continue the POTA series, on a limited basis, but only if it's cost effective. And that means re-using as many existing materials as possible.
A "Battle" Caeser, as he described, is do able. Maybe with the addition of a satchel bag and submachine gun. That kind of stuff isn't that big a deal if it's not included. There was so much 1/6 scale stuff produced over the last few years, that it wouldn't be too hard to find the right kind of submachine gun to give Caeser if Sideshow doesn't.
The "Conquest" Gorilla shouldn't be a problem for them. Re-use their first Gorilla headsculpt and reuse the Caeser jumpsuit pattern in red.
21st Century Toys produced those "shields" the apes commandeer, but in black. A quick silver paint job and it'd be almost perfect.
I'd love to see a Julius. Ideally a unique headsculpt would be prefered, but I'd accept them re-using their initial Gorilla headsculpt. That's not as big a deal for me as them attempting to re-use Cornelius for Caeser (glad they ultimately didn't do that). The gorilla tunic, pants, boots and club from the Gorilla soldier can all be used, with the addition of a "glyph" on the tunic. Their existing Ape handsculpt in black can re-used as well as Taylor's cigar and slave Taylor's collar.
The uniquely styled ape broom would be great, but that's something that would have to be sculpted from scratch. Also a small section of fire hose would be great, but again, that's something that would have to be created from scratch for them. That's also not too bad if they don't include that because it's possible to find 1/6 scale firehoses out there.
Finally, I'd love to see a "Beneath" Gorilla soldier. I really loved that image as a kid, of a whole army of Gorillas marching in the desert.
Again, they can re-use their Gorilla soldier, as is, with the addition of the submachine gun (already produced for excl. Ursus) and maybe also Ursus' pistol and holster attached to his bandolier.
They'd have to do some new tooling, but he'd have to have his backpack. Other accessories could be a flag and bugle.
Ideally, a new, slightly different gorilla headsculpt would be prefered. Similiar to what Medicom produced in their two different Soldier Apes. Their Soldier w/machine gun had a headsculpt that was a little reminiscent of one of the many "background" ape masks. A cheesy cop out for the movie makers, but an accurate representation of what was in the movie.
I hope the line continues, but if it doesn't I just want to thank Sideshow for making what they have so far.
I've enjoy this line the most in my years of 1/6 scale collecting.

Great comments all. Ursus3978 I like your Julius figure idea. I once asked SS to make an Ape Holding Cell with one wall looking wet.
Has anyone altered or added to their SS apes?
I wanted to share a few tips I've tried that have worked well.
*all add-ons are SS unless noted*
-Gorilla Soldier - Ape Marauder - Sideshow Exclusive- I've add an SS BOA - Prussian Knapsack with beige blanket and Slave collar. Another welcomed addition would be Hasbro's Gorilla Sergeant's net if only it were brown.
-General Ursus- A burning torch from SS's 8" Frankenstein. If you have this accessory you should try it. It works great for the Ape line.
-Gorilla Soldier1- Regular- Looks great with Ursus' MG
-Gorilla Soldier2- Regular- Glued club to rt hand and printed a miniature copy of the Planet of the Apes comic book cover Aug #23 "No escape for Mankind" for his left hand.
-Gorilla Soldier3- Sits on Dragon-Models horse readying his rifle.
-Slave Taylor- Added Bearded Taylor's head, soiled body further with dark shoe polish, removed smock. Sits on Dragon-Models horse with Nova.
-BPOTA Taylor - Added SFX blood to Tunic and right hand, Used Original Astronaut Taylor Head.
-Slave Brent - Added bullet hole to forehead using SFX wax and blood. Darkened bloodstains on his back from pink to a more realistic darker color. Soiled body further with dark brown shoe polish, not too much. WOW! Isn’t enough to describe this figure.
Astronaut Brent - added bearded Taylor's backpack.

I'd love to see a Julius
Amen to that! He is by far my favorite gorilla... I still get chills when he yells at Taylor "SHUT UP, YOU FREAK!!" This is before the "gorilla bashing" started in the film series when the writers began characterizing them "warmongers" (beginning with Beneath). Currently, he is available ONLY as a Kubrick. :(
However, I think if Sideshow re-used their generic gorilla head for him, it would be a mistake. Same with General Aldo, I think a generic head should only be used for other generic characters... like gorilla soldier for slave Conquest gorilla. Sideshow has a reputation to uphold so I don't think they would run the risk of putting out something that will make them appear to be "too cheap". Julius has that extra long neck hair that makes that character unique.
I don't think Julius would be out of the realm of possibility. However, I think Sideshow probably thinks that they have already covered the first film and was well into the second film when they ended the line. It would be nice to have something from each of the five classic films. They might think doing Julius would be a step backward. Just a thought....
But overall, still a solid choice.
I hope the line continues, but if it doesn't I just want to thank Sideshow for making what they have so far.
I feel the same way! I think is very important to tell Sideshow this. Click on "Contact Us" and fill out a Customer Service form". Like I stated before, I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to talk to sculptor Mat Falls, to thank him personally for his efforts on the Ape line. I could tell that the Ape line meant a lot to him as well.
A few kind words can go a long way.

Darth Kared, my plan is to give my very best try at saving this line. What way will have the best chance depends on how many fans who want to save the line actually respond.
ProtoZaius, I wouldn't expect to see 5-6 more figures from this line all at once. I would be quite pleased to see 1 good one every half year. As for Stickman's list...it shows how much could have been seen in this line. If Virgil is who you most would like to see, then don't settle for a second choice.
I agree with you that a Caesar from Battle would be one of the easist figures for them to make [although the tunic glyph was not part of Caesar's attire] and probably one of the few, if not only, that I would accept a "kitbashed" figure from Sideshow.
The ape-o-nauts, while not my favorite, certainly has been asked for plentifully. But, this IMHO would have to be a set of all three. Unless you're redoing the Power Records version, there were always 3 chimps getting out of that ship, even if they were wearing suits that we never saw any of the other crews wear. And a Sal Mineo Milo would be a most welcomed addition. Bearing in mind that Cornelius and Zira are already done, and that you only need to make one suit for all 3 and a Milo head, I would hope too see a boxed set for about $100. Aldo could conceivably be done using parts from both the gorilla soldier and Ursus but, as you said, a new sculpt is a must. The TV series less worthy? less classic? I don't know about that. There are a few forums based on the fandom of the series, and early responses have, even surprising me, had a good number of TV oriented characters.
Ursus3978, if Caesar from Battle is to be done, then he shouldn't need for us to find an accurate vesion of his weapon made by another manufacturer. Sideshow should produce the satchel and weapon. Again, a Conquest Gorilla would be great, but reusing that first head would be a mistake. If anything, they could make an Aldo head [he was in that film, just not Akins] and could then reuse that one to give us the General. And again, Julius would be a nice addition, but not with that first sculpt. The gorilla Soldier is "acceptable" only as he was a background character. To use that sculpt for any other gorilla would be an atrocity. A Beneath Gorilla would also be nice but, again, with a decent sculpt. Yes, the movie makers copped out but let's count the gorilla soldier as Sideshow's masked version and get a new, better sculpt.
Stickman, adding or altering the line?? I've done a few changes so far. I switched Taylor's head with that of Eydylhands version. I used an Ape-Joe uni with SST tunic and boots, put them on a BBi G3 with Eydylhands movie accurate gorilla sculpt and I just switched Ursus to a G3 and got rid of the helmet he came with in leiu of Hasbro's which at least drapes to the correct length. I would certainly like to see some pix of your upgrades.
Here's to hoping that this will all have some positive effect on Sideshow and we'll see at least a few more 1:6 offerings!!

My gut is telling me that we haven't seen the end of the Apes.True,it hasn't sold as well as expected...but I like to think the creative forces that drive Sideshow are not only in it for huge profit.Somewhere down the line I imagine Aldo,Ape-onauts,jumpsuit Gorilla and perhaps Julius will be made.

although the tunic glyph was not part of Caesar's attire
Well duh. :thwak
I really didn't think I needed to state the obvious. Sorry if you were confused about the omission, Ironman.
this IMHO would have to be a set of all three. Unless you're redoing the Power Records version, there were always 3 chimps getting out of that ship, even if they were wearing suits that we never saw any of the other crews wear.
Oooh, nice geek reference... Power Records. And for the record (pun intended), I have them as well.
Sorry, again Ironman... I just don't share your "all or nothing" attitude. I just find it problematic to ask (or demand) Sideshow to release a THREE pack (something I believe they have done ONCE with their Spinal Tap figures but ONLY as a retailer exclusive re-pack) with a hefty price tag of about $100-$125 just to appease us completists. With that price I have no doubt that MANY fans of the figures will wait for the price to drop before they purchase it... which again does Sideshow no good. OF COURSE I WOULD WANT THEM ALL!!! But I would settle for whatever Sideshow decided to produce that would be financially feesable for them.
As for the space suits NOT ever being sported by any of the other human astronauts... well, if they did then the suits wouldn't STILL be on the Icarus.;)
I ALWAYS thought that the space suits that the Ape wore in "Escape" were, in theory, special protective suits that the human astronauts would use for explorations in deep space (perhaps to repair something on the outside of their ship during flight like in "2001"). What if they landed on a planet without breathable air (like IF after Taylor asked the atmosphere to be read and the air found to be unbreathable)... wouldn't they need suits like that to sustain themselves? Since the air was found breathable, we didn't see the suits. I'm sure Brent probably ran the same tests. Pretty simple.
Now... why the Apes are wear them in the first place (besides the OBVIOUS cinematic touch) is another matter.
My gut is telling me that we haven't seen the end of the Apes.
Strangely, I can't help feeling the same way. I hope we are both right and it's not just wishful thinking.
got rid of the helmet he came with in leiu of Hasbro's which at least drapes to the correct length.
I followed your example, Ironman and popped off Ursus's helmet and replaced to with the Hasblow version. It looks FAR better now. Although I think the sides are a bit too long now and the helmet makes the head look a little smaller overall. Still, a VAST improvement.
It's strange to think that in this case Hasblow designed something better than Sideshow. :thud

Stickman, swiching Ursus helmets is really easy. A very slight amount of "pull" on the Sideshow version and it pops right off. I put dabs of crazy glue around the head where the helmet set and glued the Hasbro version in place.

I really didn't think I needed to state the obvious. Sorry if you were confused about the omission, Ironman.
Duh back at ya PZ!! I wasn't confused at all. But a statement like using Cornelius tunic on Caesar could get us just that. It would be alright I guess, but not accurate. I was stating it more for the unaware than expressing confusion on my part. :p
I just don't share your "all or nothing" attitude. I just find it problematic to ask (or demand) Sideshow to release a THREE pack (something I believe they have done ONCE with their Spinal Tap figures but ONLY as a retailer exclusive re-pack) with a hefty price tag of about $100-$125 just to appease us completists
Ok, so they issue ONLY ape-o-naut Zira? Then what? I don't think asking for a 3 pack is demanding, after all, there WERE 3 of them. And at $100 for 3 figures is not all that hefty if you compare it to the going rate of a single figure OR what some larger 1 item pieces are going for. $125 for the Lawgiver? And I dare say I've seen many more "requests" for the ape-o-nauts.
Now... why the Apes are wear them in the first place (besides the OBVIOUS cinematic touch) is another matter.
The real ONLY reason they were used. :lol
As for your guys guts? Just curious, how accurate have they been? Not trying to be sarcastic. Sometimes gut feelings bear out real product. I'm just curious if you've felt this before and were right. I heard the death bell toll and I'd sure like to be wrong.
Yeah, I was surprised that Hasbro got something more right than Sideshow, but to me it was a sign of waning times on the POTA just as the ridiculous Circus sign was with Caesar. I'm working on the Sideshow one again to see if the proper length "leather" is a better idea.

1) Where do I find this Eydylhands movie accurate sculpt?
Will it only attach to a BBi body?
2) I'm now wondering if I also should change the Ursus helmet. I have two of Hasbro’s, one black and the other I painted the glyph silver like general Urko’s. Have you tried trimming the Hasbro version carefully with a razorblade?
3) Where did you get that backdrop? I want to get a large backdrop like that of Ape City or the subway tunnel stairway where the mutants all gather to meet Brent and Nova. I don't see any greater resemblance to Heston with this Frontline Hero Head than Sideshow.:dunno
Perhaps its just the flash in the photo. :google
In my opinion, the face looks too modeled. I guess I just prefer the smooth sculpt look to the rough resin look. It's always good to have a choice out there.
But a statement like using Cornelius tunic on Caesar could get us just that.
Sideshow has made a few minor mistakes when it comes to some of the detail of these Ape figures. And perhaps they are guilty of losing interest with the line. The circus poster accessory is one clue. Also if you compare the paint job of the hands of both Cornelius and Caesar you will see a drop in care and detail. However, I'm inclined to believe, without reservation, that they would have enough reference material on "Battle" and sense NOT to make this mistake. Besides, it would take MORE work to add the glyph marks on the front of the tunic since they were sewn in later and not pressed like the sleeves.

No, I didn't paint it [though I am thinking about getting the nerve up to start] and neither did H2. I had a friend of mine do it. It's actually much better in person as some of it did get "flashed" out. As for this resembling Heston... I guess thats me looking for it all again. Both versions are good Heston heads. I preferred this version for Taylor as the Sideshow one immediately screamed Omega Man to me.

Is Ape Joe is in business? I've tried to locate their site using old links but have gotten nowhere. Do you have some pictures of their work? It's been a LONG time since I saw their work. It would be interesting to compare it to Sideshow's efforts

I don't think they are. I also tried finding them thru old links and searches, but to no avail. I had heard rumors that they were starting to get "Andgor-ish" in not delivering items ordered. I can see about taking some pix, although I wouldn't want to compare them to Sideshow's. :p
Ape-Joe was built on a Cotswold type body. Not the best articulation [IMHO] by today's standards. He did all his own casting of the gloves and boots and they are imperfect at best. The costumes and headsculpts are decent for "at home" versions but pale in comparison to some other home made ape figures I've seen. If I recall, he was also making some Trek and Starship Trooper stuff, but I never got around to getting any of that. When I think of what his apes cost now I cringe.

I remeber Ape Joe around three to five years ago, his prices where too high for me and his color scheme seemed a little off for my liking.
Yesterday I found a really cool picture of an Icarus model. I blew it up on my printer then cut it out and stuck it behind my Astronaut Taylor and Brent. It looks great.
Protozaius do you have the regular Lawgiver statue or the Vision Lawgiver? Might you have a picture you could share? I wish I knew how to upload pictures myself. Any suggestions?
Ironman, how many figures do you have in your collection? I was looking through some of your photos and really liked the V figures. That sure brought back some memories. Thanks.

I got the Ape-Joe figures when they were first coming out. I found the receipt when I moved and boy did that bring about sticker shock!! I swore I'd never pay anything like that again without seeing an item in person. At the time, they were the only apes in town. :\
Stickman, as for figures, I haven't been able to sit down and do a full count in some time. I started one a week or so ago and stopped at around #730. Figuring I was nowhere near done, I'd have to estimate being close to, if not over, 2000.

2k figures huh? Wow. I started collecting about seven or eight years ago when 21st Century toys first started. A girlfriend bought me a special ops soldier and I was hooked. I'm now up to about 200. It's amazing to see how far 1:6 scale has come in less than a decade. I later moved on and collected DML WWII German figs for a whlie before getting burned out on them. I wanted vareity and SS offers plenty of that. I have a few WWI figures and the entire BOA civil war collection except for the Federal 6 pound field gun :( and now the whole Ape line. I never got into BTVS however. The only Ape peice I'm missing is the Lawgiver and I want the Vision version only because of the limited number of 100 and the way it looks. Does anyone have the Medicom 6" or 8" "Greatest Ape" figure? I think that this would make a nice background statue for the Oragatan inquisition scene IMO.
I need more apes and more cowbells.

With all those Apes, you really need someone to lay down the law... THE LAWGIVER statue!!!:rock
So, did you open Cornelius and Zira or are they still in the box? Are planing to keep a full set MIB or are you waiting for the right time to open them up? For me, there are a couple of figures I would like to keep MIB... not for any investment purposes... I just think that the box art for these figures was sooo impressive it would be nice to have a few in tact.

You're right Protozauis I do need a Lawgiver!!!! These apes are getting out of control; they're taking over my living room and scaring my wife.
Actually I did open Cornelius and Zira, sorry I forgot to write that as it was 2AM and I was very tired when I wrote the reply. I would like to keep at least one-two of each figure boxed to keep everything intact. I too enjoy the box art and feel that this line will eventually increase sharply due to the very low quantities. I figured I'd keep one set to sell at a later date which will have paid for the set that I opened and had a chance to enjoy first hand. But do I want the regular Lawgiver or the apocalyptic Vision Lawgiver? I can't decide.

Ok, after reading this thread, I feel compelled to share the insane details of my Sideshow POTA collection. I have:
2 - Cornelius
2 - Zira
3 - Dr Zaius (regular) -I received one free with "Vision" Lawgiver
2 - Dr Zaius (Forbidden Zone Excl)
5 - Gorilla Enforcers (got 3 @ $20.00 from drtoyscloseouts)
2 - Gorilla Marauders (Excl)
2 - Astronaut Taylor
4 - Forbidden Zone Astronaut Taylor (Excl)
3 - Slave Taylor
3 - Slave Nova
2 - Astronaut Brent
2 - Slave Brent (Excl)
2 - Prisoner Taylor (Excl)
2 - General Ursus (Excl)
2 - Caesar (Excl)
1 - Lawgiver Statue (reg)
2 - "Vision" Lawgiver Statue (Excl)
That's 38 figures and 3 Polystone Statues! How crazy am I ? I also have the Mutants on order. I've opened one of each, and will keep 1 complete set MIB. I will most likely open the extra Gorilla Soldiers at some point, if I ever get the chance to build a diorama. I also plan to "bash" a Bearded Slave Taylor from my extra FZ & Slave Taylors.

I have "only" 1 of the DML horses! I got it at "buildawarrior.com" for $29.something several months back. I should have bought a few, since they are now $39.95 ( I also wish I'd bought a few more Gorilla soldiers @ $20.00 !). My only complaint about the DML Horse is that it seems to only be available in brown; it would make it nice for contrast if they came in black, white, tan, etc. Do you know of any other places to pick up a 1/6 horse?
Stickman
09-04-2005, 08:14 PM
DML's horse is the best on the market at this time, IMO. I'm not sure if any other company has made any, I have not seen any advertisements. I'm thinking about painting one of the ones I have black to see what it would look like. Tamiya paints blend well with items made in Japan.
ironman1188

Well, apparently buying figures in numbers like that just isn't good enough!!!
Power Team horses are pretty decent too and I think KBtoys.com still has the horse with rider for $12.99. Just go to their site and search "Power Team". The Power Team version does come in diferent colors but the sale is usually just the white one for some reason. :dunno

Well I did it. I painted one of my DML horses using Tamiya flat black. My wife was totally against it at first but after I finished the head she was so impressed that she took over and finished painting the rest. It looks great to me and adds variety. I'm glad we did it. I also painted the rear ankles white. I plan on using this version for my Slave Taylor and Nova.

Where is the Icarus from in the 1st Taylor photo?
I wasn't meaning to correct you on Aldo as much as just noticing that you used Sideshow's mistaken left heanded holster. I wasn't sure if you were intentionally upgrading Aldo or forgot about the sword as some do. Either way its still a great job. I'm trying to get a hold of a head that I thought captured a pretty good likeness of him but I haven't heard back as of yet. I have to get my camera back on the job and get some posed shots and/or preview shots for my photostory [man, am I gonna need a lot of room!]

Thanks Ironman,
I know that SS put the holster on the wrong side. I fixed it on both Ursus and my new Urko Figure. I can't find a god sized dagger either. I'm trying to keep everything SS as much as I could but when I have to I use DML items, like the bullwhip, I'm going to. I think the B/W photos add more dramatic appeal. Let me know if you need help with some photo's for your story. Maybe I caould take some for you.
P.S. The Ircurus in the backdrop is a printout of the model. Image search it in Google. You should find it. It looks pretty cool. I wish SS made something like this. This and the Staue of Liberty don't have to be in scale. It would be nice if they made some sort of prop to have in the background.

Great news [unless you didn't get one] but will selling out one of the last announced figures in the line be enough to pull it back into the mainstream of production?? Especially when they are busily enamored with their new Star Wars license? Funny too in a way. Without the success of earlier sci-fi films, like the POTA series, Star Wars may not have even been possible.

I agree. I would be happy if SS announced only 2-4 figures a year now. My wallet has a hole in it and needs some closed time. I just bought 3 more dirty apes from ToyBoxer.com so I need to chill out.

Hey Stickman, I just found the gallery section and your pics are really good. I hope you post more.
My wallet could also use the break. I could be overjoyed if SS only released 2 or 3 Ape figures a year. I think that we will eventually see all the Ape Figures sell out on Sideshow. I think that them releasing so many at one is the very big factor as to why they aren't all sold out now.

Thanks a lot DR. I'll try to get some new pics up, but it's hard without any props (Hint SSTC) like a slave jail, FZ subway tunnel, or Doomsday bomb Platform. I bought a Naked General U.S. Grant from Monkeydepot.com for only $8 and added some brown shoe polish to dirty him up then added the Slave Taylor top. I just wish his hair wasn't so neat. I plan on using him as a stand in human for a couple of "Ape Hunt" pictures. :D

I bet even though his hair is neat after you doctor him up a bit he will be a neat additon as a stand in human.
I went out with my girlfriend tonight and saw the 40 year old virgin. She made fun of me because he had a lot of Sideshow action figures also on display. They show a pretty good shot of the Dr. Zaius regular addition figure on the movie.

Ironman1188

Protozaius, I'm hoping the figures will look better than the drawings, too!!
I drew those quite a few years ago, but just came across them and decided to color them thru the computer. Might make ok box art once I fine tune them. I thought they came out pretty good.
Yes, the Ape-o-nauts might outsell them but that would require me to do one of two things. Either have someone resculpt Cornelius and Zira OR use Sideshow's versions. I don't want to reuse Sideshow's sculpts and I wouldn't want to start off on this venture by doing a "reissue" of a figure [or 2] that are already available. Not to mention, the Ape-o-nauts and TV guys are the most requested so far.
Edition sizes will really depend on what the cost of the sculpts [original sculpts and extra heads] cost.
As for exclusives, the only ones I could think of would be Burke & Virdon in their ANSA outfits, as opposed to their regular weekly TV wardrobe. Galen, Zaius and Urko don't really lend themselves to anything "extra" that could be an exclusive. [Maybe Urko with a white horse?] And that's good too. The idea of buying a 2nd figure identical to the one you already have just to get a 1:6 scale paper flyer or a machine gun never really appealed to me. We buy them because its the only way to get them, but its not very fair to the consumer, IMHO.
If I could it would be great if we could make these ourselves FOR ourselves. I know the guys over at FantasyNet did [actually I think their's is still in progress]a figure just for the forum. Everyone who contributed something to it got one. One person sculpted the head, one made the gun, one the box art, etc..
Anyway, I guess we'll see how this works out.

Hi Stickman, I knew you scored well for yourself, but did you score any collectibles from anyone else for your birthday? :D
I have dealt with Voyager once. I wanted four of the Dog Soldier figures, that were all available, according to their site. I wanted to save on the shipping by ordering all four at once. They didn't have one of them, so they sent me three. If I had known that I would have cancelled and waited till the four were back in stock. I should have stipulated so initially. That's what happens when you get spoilt by our boards dealers. I expected they would have told me in advance, so I could decide my course of action. Live and learn, and the figures met more than my expectations, so I will order from them again once it comes back in stock, which they said would be in late September. Nothing there yet. I didn't know they were in Texas, so thanks for that information. I hope they are able to get back on their feet. Their service was excellent other than this small service oversight.

No Creecher, no extra figs for the Birthday man. Unfortunately, I'm the only one that supplies my hobby, even though I gave my wife a want list many years ago. I bought two old Modern Horror Figs from MonkeyDepot.Com for myself, The Micheal Myers and Hewitt Chainsaw Masacre. I also have Freddy from JvsF and Jason part 7. Is it me, or did Sideshow drop the ball on this one. I generally do not complain about SST, but to use the same box the mutant leader comes in and simply slap a small sticker for the jailor exc! I think they could have put the effort into his own box. Any thoughts?
stickman
10-05-2005, 10:00 PM
Hey there 88th, I have lots of SS boxes that are exclusives and are no different from the regular version. The gorillas didn't have anything different about their boxes. Unless you're a box collector, which sounds like you are, I could understand. I don't mind. The sticker alone is enough to make it a variant IMO. The limited run of only 500 doesn't warrant a new box. They'd spend too much money on time and resources to ever make it worth it.
Ironman1188
10-06-2005, 04:53 AM
Yes, I felt they could have made his own box too. He is a mutant but not a variation, he's a seperate character. Check the credits of the movie, he's billed seperately. It's not the same as a second version of Taylor or Brent or Hellboy [didn't he get a new box?] or any other secondary versions. Especially as an exclusive with the same gear as the Leader he deserved at least his own box.
In looking over the box again, I started thinking...If they didn't want to spring for new box art because either it was cost prohibitive or [and I hope not] this is it for the series and they weren't putting any more $ into it then why such a small sticker. Would the difference between that size and say a sticker to place over the front box flap be that different?

Sideshow Q
10-06-2005, 10:28 PM
Creating the packaging is indeed an expensive proposition, in both man hours as well as production. At least 95% of 12-inch figure exclusives use the same box and share the same UPC bars as the retail version, and will occasionally have something extra to differentiate the product (ie. gloss varnish effects or a sticker). Sideshow puts much more emphasis on its packaging than any other company in this industry which I'm glad many of you appreciate.
As far as creating a sticker to completely cover the front flap art, that would be much too tacky and I would never agree to it. A small tasteful sticker is a much better solve in my opinion.
Ironman1188
10-07-2005, 07:45 AM
While 95% of the exclusives may use the same box/UPC, how many of those exclusives use a different characters box? I can understand exclusive Dr. Zaius or exclusive Taylor using the same box art as the regular version as its another version of an existing character. The Mutant Jailer is a seperate character from the Mutant Leader, billed in the credits seperately [Negro and Mendez, respectively]and played by two seperate actors. It's not like a lot of extra money was spent on the Jailer as it is. He has the same body, clothes and accessories as the Leader. He even has the same Mutant head. The only difference between them is the half-head facemask. Oh, and the sticker.
Would you have used the same box for Cornelius and Zira? They're both chimpanzees, afterall.
ALL the Jason's have different box art and they ARE all the same character.

Speaking of the Urko Project...
When the sculpt becomes available for purchase, how much of the figure will we have to assemble ourselves? Since you mentioned that you were gathering gorillas, does that mean that you are going to supply the clothes for the figure? Will the head come painted or will we have to have it done ourselves?

All good questions PZ. Unfortunately, as it stands now, I will only be able to supply the head. If I had some of Sideshow's $ then I'd supply everything. :angelsmil
I am working on adapting some pieces that may provide an informational basis on how to inexpensively assemble the rest of an Urko figure. I am also talking to a few people about making some of the pieces that make a gorilla soldier into Urko specifically for this figure. How that will work out depends on the final cost. I'm not looking to make money off of this just hopefully cut the sculpt cost so that another may be possible. My gathering of gorillas is purely selfish. I need my garrison to be larger than Stickman's. :D
As for the head, the option may be there to get it painted OR unpainted. I'm not sure yet what the difference in $ will be but will pass that along as soon as I have a concrete answer. I am also checking to see if its possible to make the head adaptable to Sideshow, BBi [G3], and/or Dragon bodies for anyone who may wish to use a different body.
Any other questions, please, feel free to ask.

I agree with you PZ, but there is a reason the jasons sold. Better sculpts and more care given to the character. The Ursus head would have been better if his helmet came off, but it doesn't so this makes him extremely limited. The accessories for the later POTA figures has been just horrible, the Caesar poster was the stupidest thing SS has done so far. I won't cut SS any slack here. In my opinion the only two great sculpts in the whole line were Cornelius and Zira. I'm tired of hearing SS's excuse that there aren't enough POTA fans buying the figures. Honestly die hard fans won't buy crap. If I hadn't been able to manipulate my figures and kit bash them to fill them out I would have rejected this line also. Mego had no problem and neither did Medicom. It looks like palisades will have no problem either. Unfortunately I collect 1/6 scale for a reason, better sculpts and articulation. I use these figures for film class projects like stop action or story boarding. I'm just tired of SS kiss *** reviews. In my opinion they just blew this line and it's disappointing to see that they're just giving up and wimping out. Hell there's enough information in all the movies and television series to give more than 50 different apes. SS did NOT do their homework! Only being able to buy one or two figures after at least a year of it's sale date has also hurt this line. If they lifted the buying limit these damn dirty apes would have sold long ago!

I feel that the Sideshow line is THE BEST "Planet of the Apes" line I have ever seen. Sure it's had it's rough spots. I believe the mixture of cloth and leather in the original costumes presented a challenge for the Sideshow designers to replicate in the 1/6 scale. So some of the clothing looks a tad "overstitched". Also, it is unfortunate that they were experimenting with rotocast heads during time of the line. Most upsetting to me, the colors were a little off with Zaius. And the the later exclusives left a bit to be desired. I'm SO with you on the circus poster. I would have much preferred a "Battle" Caesar exclusive! At least Sideshow didn't charge us extra for the damn poster. But I sincerely believe that the strengths of the Sideshow Ape line far outweigh it's flaws.
And I believe Sideshow FAR out shadows the other Ape lines attempted by other companies. Mego never once got a figure right! Dr. Zaius in a white costume and black Superman boots! Zira And Cornelius with painted eyebrows, lipstick, furry cuffs, and Indian moccasins! And the WORST Gorilla sculpt in the history of toys! And they outfitted the two TV fugitives in pajamas they never wore in all 13 episodes! And the worst figure was Urko! What was up with him? Did they have only B&W photos to base his coloring on? You would think considering they gave him an ORANGE helmet with BLUE glyphs, a MUSTARD vest and PURPLE tights! He looked like a member of the Village People! I know that the toy biz was way different back then, but... I was only 8 when the figures came out and I knew they sucked even then. So, to me Mego ONLY scores points because they were THE Apes toys I played with first... not because they set any high bar of quality.
As for the Medicoms, I like them fine however I found the whole series very limiting... the articulation was particurally worthless. They might as well be static figurines. Granted the sculpts were very impressive... yet the paint ops were VERY sloppy therefore masking or mudding the detail. I went through a whole box of Zaius' before I could find one I wanted to buy. And some of the poses were boring or not functional... for example, WHY can't Astronaut Zira hold her helmet? Unfortunately, I bought the entire set BEFORE Diamond picked them up so these monkeys were not cheap! I liked the array of figures they made... I just didn't love them or found them to be as much fun as they could have been. I have high hopes for the Palisades line. Yet their ugly Army of Darkness line gives me reason to pause.
Like you, Stickman, I love 1/6 scale figures as a whole. The first figure I EVER played with was Captain Action and his stunning array of costumes. So when Sideshow announced their Ape line of 12"ers I was in heaven. Barring the Ape abominations produced by Hasblow, this would be the first time the Apes would properly presented in the scale I'm passionate about.
And, at least for me, Sideshow didn't disappoint. Sure, we have had to tinker a bit here and there to make them to where we like them. I know I had a friend who is a professional painter touch up my Zaius to where I like him. But isn't this what makes this hobby so much fun, sometimes? To make these figures our own? To buy a figure that makes our creative kitbashing juices flow?
Isn't that the reason we Ape fans are all frantically buying all the Sideshow gorillas that we can get our hands on? :google

Thanks for the reply PZ, I know I was a little harsh. I guess I was just blowing off some steam. I have all of my apes fully displayed and really appreciate they way they look. There's not a day that goes by that I want to tear into the remaining five gorillas I have still packaged, and add them to the lot. Besides, after I wrote that last bit, I looked up at my mutants, I really like them. Thanks for lending an ear and spreading some insight. :peace

Aerosmith, I'd get them all. They are all unique in their own little way. I like the gorillas most, but the mutants are really cool also. With the high production run on Cornelius, Zira and Zauis you might have a little extra time gettting these before resorting to Ebay.

To answer your question, Aerosmith... I'm partial to Cornelius. For me, Roddy McDowall WAS the Planet of the Apes. And I think that this is one of the best sculpts of Roddy to date. It captures the seriousness of the character in the first film. And he comes with some GREAT accessories, the best of which is the human doll from the cave scene in the Forbidden Zone. I think it was very impatant to nail this likeness and Mat Falls did a peerless job.
Next, I would pick Dr. Zaius. I just don't know which one I would choose. The regular Zaius has his classic robes, so it's the popular choice for the casual Ape collector. However, my favorite scene of the first film is the above cave scene I mentioned. And the exclusive Zaius is wearing the costume from that scene. The figure is wonderfully detailed even down to the glyph gloves. In fact, I have my exclusive Zaius holding the human doll that Cornelius came with. So I guess I would say... BUY BOTH ZAIUSES!!
I can't tell you how cool these figures look when they are displayed next to the Lawgiver statue! I know the Lawgiver is a bit expensive but he is worth EVERY PENNY. I should know... I own THREE of them. He is the center of my Ape collection... one that I've amassed for the last 30 years.
Lastly, as MUST buys go, the Gorilla Enforcer makes a fine addition to the casual collector.. and it completes the "trilogy of monkey types." You would have one of each. And the gorilla has some wonderful accessories like the signature Ape rifle and club.
So there you have it. In my opinion, the four (or five) Sideshow Ape figures that are must haves for the beginning Ape collector. And you're in luck because Sideshow is offering a Spooktackular Ape Bundle: Buy the Lawgiver Statue and get 25% OFF the statue and receive Dr. Zaius for $30 and an Ape Enforcer for FREE! That's killing three of the Apes with one stone!
Here's the link: http://www.sideshowtoy.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=search&item=7506
Of course, I wouldn't stop there, but I'm an Ape fanatic and hardly impartial. I believe that ALL of the 12" Apes are worth owning... as well as a few stinking humans. I own multiples of each and every figure Sideshow has made... and look foward, in hope that the line will continue with more great Apes in the future.

Okay so here is my plan when I get some money im going to get them in this order
Cornelius
Zira
Zaius - Exclusive
Zaius - Regular
Gorilla Soldier
Ursurus
Caesar
That's all the ape's they made right? Id get the Law Giver, Humans & Mutants if I had more room. I might get the Talor & Nova set though. Thanks for all the info! :)

Aerosmith,
While PZ's buying order is valid. I would grab a gorilla soldier first. They are the only ape that does not resemble any simian in any of the films, but, they are quite ripe for bashing. This makes them somewhat hard to find at times. Cornelius, Zira and Zaius appear regularly on Ebay. By all means, if you like the POTA, grab them all. Even Brent is worth having, despite his sculpt background stories.

I've seen the 1st draft on the head and it is having a few minor revisions addressed. I think everyone that was interested in this sculpt will be impressed. I already have his body and horse standing by.
On the other hand....I just counted up my POTA figures and they're ringing in at a count of 56. That doesn't include Hasbro versions or the old ApeJoes. I just wish Sideshow would have a big BLOWOUT sale if they are truly done with the line for now. Hey Sideshow!!! Couldn't you use the room for the new Star Wars and HotToys licenses?? LOL, if you saw the ApeJoes back in the day, they were very cool. Now, next to Sideshow's offerings, they pale in comparison. I have already cannibalized one of the gorillas when I created another soldier using FrontLine's Gorilla head.

Well....a small piece of paper as an exclusive didn't help either. I know that some of the Sideshow folk really like POTA but....
- exclusive Caesar comes with a slip of paper
- General Ursus comes with a shabby holster and its on the wrong side
- General Ursus resemblence is.....lacking
- General Ursus helmet is mis-sized
- too many Taylors
- the Brent debacle
- gorilla soldier has a decent enough sculpt, but too generic
- POTA figures released too quickly
I'm sure, as with Brent, there may have been other behind the scenes criteria that affected the line, but it just seems that it was made to be an all or nothing license. Either all of it would be accepted blindly or nothing new would be made. And blind acceptance wained. Not to mention that breathing time wasn't really available for this line.
I'd be happy if we got just one POTA figure for every 3-4 Star Wars that we'll see.

I tend to agree with your general assessment of the POTA line, Ironman. I can't help but feel that if Ursus had turned out better, that monkey would have been a HOT seller! I had no problem with the gorilla soldier's head being generic... I did however have an issue with a generic General. And that helmet... the crowning piece of the figure was mis-designed. To think that I had to resort to using a Hasblow helmet to IMPROVE it. :google And with all the reference material out there on this character, how did they mis-count the rows of armour on his vest?
In regard to the sheer number of POTA items produced (even if you DON'T count all of the Taylors) in the span of one year, I wonder how fast the figures would have sold if they released only a two or three figures at a time.

It is indeed a shame Sideshow, in it's enthusiasm to bring us the Apes, chose this strategy. That being too many at once. No line may ever be dead, but as with other lines, the spacing of high profile figures is of paramount importance. With Cornelius, Zira, Taylor and Dr Zaius amongst the first releases, the Soldier and Ursus, what is there to revive interest, or more importantly sales.
Sure avid fans will buy them all. Unless the edition sizes are decreased accordingly, and how low can it be, to sustain new releases. At least Buffy has Giles and a multitude of demons to aid its continuation. Sure you can make a list, but it will be of resuited Space Apes, and lesser profiled characters.
There is a finite number of collectors, who's interests may span a number of lines. All of them running at the same time doesn't aid sales in the first instance. Leaving us to spread out purchases and rely on the secondary market. I do think a line shouldn't be segregated from other lines. I mean that a line shouldn't have to rely on itself to propagate itself. With Star Wars and, in the past I would have included Buffy, popular lines should be able to support failing lines such as the apes. In reality this may bring undone the more popular line, so why no more Universal Monsters?
Slower production and output of figures may frustrate the fan, but with each figure a revision of strategy is possible, and a proper change of course may sustain further output. I would think Sideshow tries new possibilities and learns from it's mistakes and successes accordingly. Flexibilty is key, as the popularity of 1/6 scale figures wanes across the globe. The length of time needed to research develop and produce a figure is indeed an obstacle, and must be a frustrating one to Sideshow.
In the end the Apes had a great run. Love the ones you have. No more will be made. I still reckon they ought to throw a figure from a defunct line at us once in a while. The SDCC exclusive is one way they could do it and make money. So how about Aabel from Spider County? That is all I ask.

My tongue is swelling as I type Ironman. I couldn't think of another way to get more figures out, that was feasable for Sideshow as well. After all, if they did go the Comic Con way, it would cost me extra, and I have a chance of missing out as well. When you look back, there have been more Apes released than some of the other lines. I can't complain about that. You go right ahead though. (Pokes out swollen tongue).
You have broad shoulders. Whilst I sit on the fence, you are taking the brunt of it all. I hope others realise that, and appreciate what you are doing for them. I certainly do. ApeJoes were fine compared to what we had at the time....ZIP.
I remember seeing the ad for them in the ToyShop paper way back before the internet dawned at my house. They and a guy who was making Mego sized Brents and Taylors really caught my eye. Being more the 1:6 kind of guy, I made arrangements to obtain the "base" set. I believe he went on to make Taylor [both ANSA and slave versions] and at least a [I]Conquest gorilla in red jumpsuit. Considering they were made on a base body of vintage Joe, they weren't bad for the time. Not in the "family" photo is an ApeJoe gorilla soldier, he already having been cannibalized for pieces for Kedar.
The pic does not show ALL of the Central City denizens. There are some Hasbro Taylors, and gorillas not accounted for there,as well as some not yet arrived Sideshow figures and the Mego figures I use for the ape children.
Another POTA fan, Chris Hight, makes some fantastic pieces. If he says ok, I will post a few pix of his work. Some is based on the Hasbro bodies but, WOW!! it shows how good even they can look.
Creech, I definitely would go postal if they were to think of a ComicCon POTA exclusive. I don't mean to constantly beat a dead horse, but you can't revive something if you give up. Think I'm bad with this? You should see me during a CPR in progress!!

I don't know who did it... it might be Chris's work as well, I dunno. I didn't bid on it because it was rather expensive (around $125, I believe) and I wanted to see what Sideshow was going to do with the figure. Now after being a tad disappointed with their results, I REALLY wish that I bid on it. It's interesting what you can do with those Hasbro as a base.
I wonder if Chris has done any more customizing using Sideshow as the base.

Yes, I think that is his Ursus. I had it in a different file on my computer, so I didn't want to include it as his, unconfirmed. I know he has also done Zira, Lucius, Julius, Aldo, Urko, Virdon, Conquest Gorilla & Orangutan, and Gideon, a gorilla from a POTA group fan fiction comic. Probably has more that I am either forgetting or unaware of.

Considering how Burton's Ape merchandise just sat on the shelves (my Toys R Us STILL has a Thade on horseback!) I think it would be foolish of Sideshow to mount a line for that film.

Just the same, if Sideshow came out with a better female body, Daena would be one helluva 1st offering. :naughty
Hell, they could even do the "updated" Linda Harrison from Burton's version.
I could see them selling as it is more likely for Sideshow's versions to resemble the characters more accurately than Hasbro's.

I wasn't just talking about the Hasbro offerings. There were some REALLY cool statues and cookie jars from Burton's abomination that were of VERY high quality that didn't sell very well.
Not unless we are "treated" to the threatened sequel of the remake... I'd say we have seen the last of Thade and the boys. :D
But I have been wrong before.

Well....stone me with futuristic fruit if you want, but....I liked it too.
To me its kind of like the Classic Battlestar Galactica vs. New Battlestar Galactica. I felt that the new version of POTA was decent enough science fiction, it just has nothing to do with the original or its characters. It cannot help but be Planet of the Apes in name though.
Everyone says how good the new BSG is but it needn't be called that, if plot and characters are that strong they shouldn't need the classic show and character names to rely on.
There's never gonna be a day when both versions of Apes is on and I choose Burton's, but I still own it and I still watch it when its on occaisionally.
Which leads me back to another question I had asked on another forum: bearing in mind the success they have had together, would Johnny Depp have made a better Leo Davidson and/or would that have helped Burton's film?

Marky Mark has some cinema cred because of Boogie Nights, but I don't buy him as anything but a thug (well cast in 4 Brothers movie). So Depp or anyone else would have made Burton's movie better, IMO.

I heard originally Burton wanted Matt Damon for the role... but he was working on a movie (Bourne Identity?) that ran into over time and he wasn't going to be ready for the starting of production.
Oddily enough, because the production of Apes ran over as well, Mark Wahlburg had to bow out of Ocean's Eleven.
He was replaced by Matt Damon.

When did Zaius decide to stuff Dodge?
And, what other enemies did the Mutants of Beneath have?
Why didn't the "Skipper" have a beard when Brent, Taylor, Landon and Dodge all did?

As I remember it, Arnold was attached (but never officially cast) to the version of the re-make (or re-imagining) when a geneticist goes back in time to find a cure for a plague when he sees the world populated by apes. I don't think the character wasn't named "Taylor", but I'm sure he was suppose to be cut from the same cloth.
The Apes film that I would have liked to seen get made was the one James Cameron was thinking up... rumor had it that the story he wanted to tell was going to fit within the already existing Ape saga canon.
And, Ironman, as for your original saga questions... the answers are quite simple:
-Dr. Zaius needed matching human book ends to give his museum the right touch.
-The Mutants were plagued with a very nasty termite problem. And since they didn't have cable, they used their mind control talents to pit termites against each other for the sheer entertainment value of it.
-Brent knew the Skipper was a goner... he shaved the Skipper himself to prepare his body for a proper burial.

Wow SSC has upped the ante with the POTA line! Now the limit is 10 on every figure. Hehe! Eight more gorillas for me! I also went in a while back for the Lawgiver, Zauis and gorilla special. I have no idea how many of those pesky apes I have now because I had to put them away for the Holidays. Merry Christmas Ape Fans!! :fest

Ironman,
I'm sending you a lot of holiday cheer! My apes have all gone dormant for the winter. I have so many my wife is starting to get upset, hehe. She even had me put away the o’l Lawgiver unless I found a holiday hat for him to wear, I wish. When I start making good money again maybe I’ll be able to send a few your way but I’ve seen your lot and you already have quite a few yourself. I wonder how Santa would feel if he knew about your greed for more apes, LOL.
Proto-
It was nice seeing that Ursus has sold out. I wish the others would to. It’s amazing that with such a low number of 400-500 that they are still around. It’s also hard to imagine that any figure, Star Wars or any other mix that has a high # like 7000 will ever really become valuable. I hope we get at least a few more POTA figs in the upcoming year.
P.S. How are your custom figures coming IM?

It was Santa's own lack of bringing what was on my list when I was young that taught me how to hoard whatever I can gather. :D
As for my customs? I just became fortunate enough to get some very nice resin heads. I am working on dremeling them out so they fit the proper figures. I am also trying to talk the maker into making copies as I think that any Apes fan would like them.
Urko? Sadly, he's been delayed due to the necessary materials not being delivered on time and won't be celebrating Christmas at my house as was hoped. As soon as I get any further pix they will be posted.

If you're keeping the Sideshow body, you'll have no problem. They "pop" off just like the regular hands. If you plan on switching bodies, as I did, it takes a bit more work. I have done it both ways and have not done any damage to the gloves.

"And HEY!!!! Dogs on the Planet of the Apes??

Ironman, you are correct, in the films, dogs and cats had been wiped out by a plague, inspiring humans to start keep apes as first pets, then servants. But correct me if I'm wrong, in the Apes TV pilot, "Escape From Tomorrow", in the opening scene, didn't the ape boy (Arno?) "tree" an old human (Farrow) with his pet dog? I remember this continuity glitch bothering me, even when I was 9!

Hey,
I have recently started collecting Sideshow figures with the Star Wars 1/6th line. Browsing the Sideshow website, I have noticed how nice the POTA figures look. I am thinking about collecting them.
I know that there are at least a few people that want this line continured. You know, I think Sideshow could be more successful with the Apes line if they dropped the price to $30 and put a little more focus on marketing these things. They really look like great figures so I hope that Sideshow finds away to save the line.
By the way, does anyone know where I can find a good deal on the main Apes figures? The Star Wars and Aragon figures have kind of hurt wallet and I want to pick these up as cheaply as possible...or I will have to wait a bit longer.

Welcome to the AAC [Ape Addiction Club] :D
The main ones? Well, you just missed a sweet deal on a ton of Sideshow from Apogee, but I think they emptied out now.
Bigbadtoystore.com has some.
http://drtoyscloseouts.com has Zira and Zaius for $20 each plus the Lawgiver for $100
http://www.timewalkertoys.com has Zira, Cornelius, Zaius and the soldier for $107 + free shipping, Brent and Taylor are $28.99 ea and the Taylor/Nova set is $49.99
http://www.alteregocomics.com has Brent and Caesar for $22.50 each
http://www.toyboxer.com has Lawgiver for $90, Zaius, Taylor, Zira and Cornelius for $30
http://www.redplanettoys.com has a decent variety for a variety of prices
And of course there's always Ebay.
I'm not affiliated with any of these but have dealt pleasantly with most. Let us know how you make out and post some pix of what you get!!
As for Sideshow dropping the price? I think that unlikely [although I'd be 1st in line] but they did run some great specials during the 'taculars last year. I think it's too late to market the line for any type of success unless they tied it all in to a new release {Hint, Hint}

I agree with you that Sideshow did a lousy job of advertising and marketing the Apes. I feel I am a huge Ape collector and I found out about the line from a buddy of mine who was on the Sideshow wep page looking at something else. The only place I saw the Ape line advertised was on Crawfords Toy review and a fan based Planet of the Apes web page I belong to.
But I still can't complain too bad. Amoung my Apes collection the Sideshow Line is the best and I am happy I have what they made. I just hope the do a line for the TV series. In April FOX is releasing The Planet of the Apes Ultimet DVD collection with all 5 origianl movies, the TV Series, the Apes Cartoon, and that film that Burton did with the smae name as our beloved classic origianl. Hopefully Sideshow will release a new Ape figure and promote it with this DVD release. If they were smart they would approach FOX with a flyer with what they have released and have it put in with this collelction.
Any way, good luck getting your Ape line together. I feel you will be more than happy with them. The most expensive one I found is the Forbidden Zone Taylor; the one with the beard. He goes for over $100.00 on Ebay.
Good luck with your collection and, as Ironman stated. post pics of them when you get them.:wacky
