I would be most interested in seeing statues articulated. That could prove to open up several other possibilites.
Good luck!

[QUOTE=Ironman1188;4462870]I thought several years back of a POTA reimagining. It basicly was set around what if the virus that killed off all the dogs and cats had "long term" effects on other living things. Maybe just in isolated areas. Maybe enhanced effects after the simian/human war. Eitherway, it led to an area where Burke & Virdon went exploring to find a city of apes......ZOMBIE apes!!
I couldn't figure out how to properly zombie an ape, and was too chicken to destroy one from my collection to see what could be accomplished.
You, sir, have shown just how great it can look when done.
Kudos! :bow

GREAT title to the sequel!
And I'm glad they are not rushing to get it to theaters. Burton's reboot was rushed to make a release date and look what happened.
Of course that was nothing compared to the grind of the original saga where we had a new Ape film EVERY year! (not counting the extra year it took to get the first sequel Beneath of the ground)

Hey anybody coming to Wondercon 2013? It's never too early to plan. If it will be in San Francisco, I shall be there in full ape regalia. Hopefully with a few friends in ape gear as well.
I am so glad to have finally met you PZ. I smile whenever I think about it...because I never would have thought I would ever meet someone from Central City. It was so awesome!!! I was almost giving up bumping into you by the time you found me because I am so easy to miss. Even if you are quite tall, you would still make a great Lawgiver. You will just look most awesome I know it.
Sorry I am rambling...but someone said I could/should get a handicapped placard for being under five feet tall. I didn't even know such a thing existed. That would make life so much easier for me!! LOL!! I will have to look that up and see if it's possible...

It was great to finally meet you as well... too bad our meeting was so short. After going to SDCC for 8 years, you were my first Ape I met in costume.
Someday, I would LOVE to dress up as an orangutan... one for the bucket list. I came across some old pictures of me dressed as a POTA gorilla (wearing the only Don Post mask that fit comfortable over my big a$$ head) at a Star Trek convention in the mid seventies in San Francisco. I've got to find some way to digitize them and post them on the thread... as well as my photos with my meeting with Roddy McDowall around the same time.
Well, it looks like after 8 straight years of going to SDCC, I'm sitting this year out. Hope I'm not going to miss too much.

Anyone in the mood for some custom Forbidden Zone Zaius pictures? The western style real leather brown boots are from frontline miniatures, the top has been altered to look a little more like the movie version and the front liner is made of real soft leather and four added snaps to secure it! The original sculpt was altered to the now open mouth version masterfully by our own here Angelofmusic/Mark and the Apes Hyroglyphs came from Snickertown. Another note on the custom loin cloth material! It was made by Mathew Sotis who is another customiser. I wish that I could find some brown gloves! It's just a head glued in fabric. No body. Its a tad large to work as a 1/6 scale chimp infant I think, which is why I'd love to make a chimp child (whatever age range you think would work) out of him. Just curious what body would work best in your professional opinions... :)

I've been away from my 1:6 projects due to my health, but now, with nothing but time on my hands am considering a few things.
I've fallen into watching a lot of my fave 70's and 80's sci -fi and came across this image, which I may try and replicate.

Sorry that this took so long. Been crazy at work!
Here's the head. It took a little bit of work to pull it out of the glued cotton underneath the fabric. Obviously, it wasn't designed to be mounted on a body, but could I saw it off, or something?

Is anyone working on anything ape? I need some inspiration. I've got projects to do but I procrastinate because of lack of inspiration...
I just had a friend of mine make me a bunch of backpacks for my
gorillas. I plan to have about 100 made so I can have a grand march.
Today a sprayed them with primer and will probably paint on the weekend.

That sounds great guys. I don't want to start on a new project now with these other projects resting on my shoulders. I wish I could just wave my hand and they would miraculously complete themselves. It's an inner battle that I must win. To complete a project or two. I've still got Mathilda's shoes to do if you remember...and I want to make them from scratch. I can do it. I must make the time.
I would love to see a horde of apes on horseback charging up a hillside...or see that mass army for your invasion into the Forbidden Zone. Can I come over someone's house to play and just for a few hours have fun with ape figures?

Michael these are great. Kfog--they will be loved. I recognize Ironman's gorilla--the one he had commissioned, and it looks like it was further enhanced by Angel. The last gorilla looks like Angel's work.
I'm still procrastinating. Will try to paint some Mego scale stuff and finish some molds for casts this Sunday.

Thanks to Angel and Ironman! I love them.
Here's the third "background" gorilla. He's just a Hasbro soldier in Sideshow clothes. Once my collection grows, the hasbros will all find themselves lingering in background shots to add depth.
http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff388/mjkostka/cfc597e1.jpg
I painted up the horse that's front and center of the group shot. The shiny body bugged me and he had a broken hoof..part of why I got him for a steal at a local collectors store. I repaired the hoof and painted him a dark brown shade. I love how it came out. It's my favorite horse paint job so far! Trying to keep them all in the black/dark brown family. I need more horses, though.
Hopefully Ironman saw my baby chimp head on the last page, too!

Ironman1188
07-14-2012, 08:53 PM
Well, for me, it would need to have the pacifier removed first off. Then, the neck could be trimmed down to size and basicly inserted in the neckhole of a Mego.

I'm working on my Star Trek young chimps eyes and I'm really happy with how they're coming out. Using off-white, black and skin colored acrylic paints. My goal is to make him look as much like a POTA ape as possible, but not necessarily "movie accurate". I'll post pics later once I have the right clothes. They should arrive at my door this week. I painted up his boots, furry handbacks, eyes and teeth.
I took the remaining fabric that his head was originally wrapped in, and I took a little chimp figurine that I had laying around and I dissec...ahem...examined HIM under the knife, too! I chopped off his head, hands and feet. I cut up the fabric and glued his body parts into it to make a 1/6 newborn chimp (Milo?). I glued his head to the remainder of the neck stump from the other head just for a little support, but left him otherwise body free so that he'd be fully posable. What do you guys think? It was a last minute idea I had with left over stuff...

It was great to see a few quick Battle scenes on the big screen as well as Paul's "ape"earence on the Johnny Carson Show. Thanks! Yeah I was actually thinking about darkening up the skin tone, especially around the eyes.
The problem I ran into was that the boots on the Star Trek figure are apart of the body itself and can't be removed. They were black so I gave them a quick paint job. I'm not sure if I could fit another shoe OVER it (or could I?). I was thinking of obtaining an extra pair of sideshow chimp shoes so that it would have the feet indentations, but not sure if they'd look too big. I'm also considering sculping some hair on his head to make him closer resemble a POTA style chimp...but that's major unfamiliar territory for me...lol

Michael--you can probably just buy the smallest jar of Apoxie and sculpt the ape toes over those boots. It would just make the clothes impossible to remove later down the road...but you'd have a new pair of chimp boots that way...and I don't know if there's anybody else here that likes to remove the clothes off their action figures like I do. I resculpted his hair again, filed down his goofy elongated muzzle and resculpted it( pretty happy with how that came out), resculpted the eyebrowes and filed down some grooves around his face that made him look old (he still isnt perfect in that regard...i may try to smooth it out some more) and gave him another new paint job. I'm getting closer to the sideshow chimp skin tone...I just needed to mix some pink acrylic in with the tans, browns and whites. I used Cornelius Jr. pictures from "Battle" as reference (the classroom scene mainly). I used fabric paint on some Mego clothes I ordered and pieces of a chopped up Hasbro Dr Zaius jacket glyph for the leather strips. I don't know if it's because the scene was in broad daylight, but Bobby Porters wig looked a lot more brown to me than black, but I used black anyway so that he would be in sync with the other chimps. Should I give it a more brown tint?
Awesome idea Jessica. I do have Cornelius' PJs that I was going to use to make the camp fire/Aldo plotting to kill Ceasar scene, but I suppose it wouldn't be a big deal if he wore the regular chimp child clothes. The way I glued the strips onto the outfit would make it difficult to remove anyway, so I'll likely keep it on. I'll try sculpting over the feet, or I could sculpt over a pair of mego shoes and file down the existing shoes until they fit over it...
I've been working with sculpey III only because it's cheap and easily attainable at Jo Ann Fabrics, but like Steve Strange warned me, it can be a bit brittle. I may use apoxie on my next project.
I'll post a pic of my child chimp so far later today.

Or does anyone if you could dye the Sideshow gorilla uniforms? If so
what brands of dye?

This is what I have used:
http://www.ritdye.com/colorit_color_formula_guide
I'll have to check my backup computer to be 100% sure, but I think I used mixture #432 (1 Tbs Wine, 1 Tsp Black, 1 Cup Water)
I first remove the color (see thumbnail photo). Then I dye the uniforms.

He's barefoot right now until the spare set of SS chimp shoes come in. I also threw Hasbro chimp tunic on him until I'm able to track down an extra SS tunic.
He's not based on any particular character. His tunic has no glyphs, though (using them for upcoming projects), so he can't be anyone important! :-P

Yes, I copy the direct link from photobucket, come over here, hit reply, and there's a small icon that resembles a picture frame. Click that, highlight where you you want to paste it, and there. If you post multiple pics, though, make sure to move the cursor to the next line first, because it leaves it inside the code in the reply box.
They have Rit fabric dye at Jo Ann Fabrics. I used the "wine" one to dye my female gorilla... :)

Im going to resculpt the hairline. It's too widows peak-ish for a chimp. Is there a specific acrylic paint you guys use for chimp skin tone? Mixing colors is hard if you want to do touch ups later to keep achieving the same tone.
Does anyone have any decent pictures of any of the midgets that portrayed child chimps? More specifically, their prosthetics/masks? I'm planning on reworking and growing my ape child collection. I want to recreate the classroom scene from Battle.
Oh, and maybe the "look! It's a man!" gorilla child from Planet?

So, I resculpted some of my chimps hairline to get rid of the weird, narrow, pointy widows peak. I made the mistake of putting the entire nude figure in the oven, and the result was a deformed, caved in leg, and some weird fever blisters all over the body. Good news is, the head came out good. Now I need to grab another body. The TT body I was using was good, but boy are those joints loose! He was a tad tall for a chimpanzee too (to be fair, I originally bought it for a gorilla, but changed my mind). So it's back to the drawing board for a chimp body. I'll definitely snag another TT body, though, for a future gorilla project.
Anyway, here's my reworked chimp... I tried adjusting the colors a little more too. I'm happy with the hairline now.

Hey Darkness - Every time I tried dying, it would come out a very different color than advertised. Granted, I didn't use the color remover or mix in the vinegars or anything. Do you need to use the remover even on white articles of clothing? Because even a white top I tried dying came out a different color.
I want to dye some mego clothes green with this. I'm tired painting clothes with fabric paint...it gets so stiff and phony looking...

I have similar problems. The darker cloth makes the uniform darker. The best I could do is precisely measure everything.
I did experiments with a more plum color, but it didn't look right to me.

Using advice received here, toupee tape holds the large pieces in place. I used Scenic glue along the edges with little fur pieces cut from the backing. It dries matte clear.... mostly.
For my next Gorilla Grodd conversion, I plan to try to make a face plate and glue it on a Hot Toys gorilla soldier head. I hope it works.

Im going to order some Apoxie through inventory at my fathers hardware store. "sculpie III" worked well for me in getting my feet wet, but I want the real deal now!
To give you an idea of how little I know, I didn't realize that you don't have to bake apoxie. I could never figure out how you guys sculpted thin limbs, etc without demolishing figures. As soon as I get the Apoxie, I'm sculpting a bunch of chimp shoes and furry hand backs. Awesome!

Disregard the printer question, I found one. Here are two more conquest custom apes that I finished. Those are angels armbands! For those new, mix equal parts, shape and sculpt, allow to harden after a few hours. It doesn't require baking like Sculpey.
I tried to make some furry hands using Apoxie so I wouldn't want to have to risk damage to the hands by baking (see thumbnail).

Well, he's actually in the midst of moving across country but he sends his regards and says HI! to all. He is without a computer till he gets settled then hopes to be back amongst us.

Thanks. :hi5: I bought some super cheap Worf figures with ideas like this in mind.
The big figure is the 1/5 scale Bigfoot statue.
Where did you find super cheap Worfs?

The Rit dye job was a success! I dyed my Hasbro Zaius clothes, used an AA GI Joe figure I picked up at a collectors store, trimmed the Attar neck and filled the head with glue.
