Yay to Angel and Jessica! Hi Angel, I received the President of the assembly and Julius sculpts yesterday and was amazed by fantastic paint on both! Meaning you are perfecting your painting skills! I can definately tell you were very meticulous and took your time and I really appreciate it. I love how the Julius sculpt looks fierce and the President looks like the real deal. Jess, your skills in sculpting is really amazing (I love em!). The definition is superior! An early Christmas present to me and a very merry thankyou to you both! Thanks very much, Kent.:clap

Kfog wanted to know as well guys. I'll dig my paints out of the garage and let you know really soon. I'm getting ready to go out now and buy new eyeglasses. Mine snapped in half last night and I can't see to good without them. Everything is very blurry.

Forgive me if I'm slow getting back to anyone.
My computer is down, and so is my son's [whose I was using] so I'm down to only my wife's , when its working.

maybe this is worth a small smile... Marsha took me to a craft store sale Thanksgiving day and it was wall to wall people. I'm working on a commercial for the Tacoma Cobras football team, part of the PDFL league, and today I filmed an Italian opera at Seattle's Central Library. Having my equipment out and about helps encourage grabbing one of my gorillas and to start filming. Hopefully many more pictures will come. Thanks again everyone. :)

... I’m trying to get caught up on the cool stuff here. (I’m looking forward to more of Jessica’s ape heads.)

Just thought I should mention that the resin head that _Darkness _Predator bought isn't from Apes. It's the Schlockthropus from John Landis' first project "SCHLOCK". Rick Baker created the costume, which Landis himself wore. Haven't seen the film, but I hear it's rather amusing...PS

Thanks for the info just in case. I also think the artist truly captured the pose of the referenced Schlock character perfectly. (I liked all the replies.)

The individuals that post often here are great and are very tolerant when I share my crazy ideas. It is good to visit this area full of POTA fans I can identify with. The Planet of the Apes movies boxed set was the first DVD or this case DVD set, I ever purchased.

BTW
Here are photos of the experimental results using those little brown wigs on eBay. It would have been better to find the raw materials, because I had to cut it up anyway. I don’t think it turned out good enough to try an orangutan head. This one will be another ape in the crowd that I will someday assemble. (I’m finally purchasing 7.5 acres and will start on my dream home with my own museum with a special simians section.)

I've included a picture of my effort to make a custom predator that enjoys hunting simians.

I really like the recent diorama photos. The diorama (and the photographer) actually tells a little story... well not too “little” considering the size and scale. ;) I'm looking forward to more stuff.

Ironman, Jessica and KFog - I haven't forgotten about your requests for the paints used on the Dr. Maximus and Julius. I still have to dig that out of storage. Hang in there gang, it's coming.

I finally went out into my messy garage and dug out all the paints I used for Dr. Maximus and Julius. I hope this helps you guys, again I’m sorry for the wait.

For Julius I pretty much paint the whole head flat black with Testors acrylic paint. Once dried, I normally paint the eyes. I don't use straight white on the eyes. I mix a little drop of red acrylic paint (any brand) with Citadel skull white. Should look like a light pink. Apes normally have brown eyes so I use either Citadel snakebite leather or Modelmasters acrylic sierra brown. For the gorillas brown skin I always use Modelmasters acrylic sierra brown applying it with a drybrush technique so that the black underneath bleeds through.

For painting chimp skin I normally use Citadel tallern flesh. Sometimes I will use Tamiya XF-15 flat flesh. Whatever I actually use, I normally apply a second coat once it dries this time with a mixture of the same flesh paint with a little white paint for some highlights. After that, I also use a Citadel wash called gryphonne sepia and a little Citadel devlan mud around sockets of the eyes. I might go to back a hit the highlights with a drybrush using the flesh/white mixture. Lastly, I add a bit of color using a drybrush technique again to the chimp skin using Citadel Terracotta. Beyond that, I put some clear gloss (acrylic) over the eyeballs.

Hope this helps and makes sense, ~Mark~

P.S. I seem to use different colors every time I paint orangutan hair. Again, I use everything from Citadel. Be it Desert yellow, Bubonic Brown, Iyanden darksun and Tausept ochre. I would mix any of the above colors with a white to lighten them. After that I would use some Citadel gryphonne sepia on the hair and get it thoroughly into the crevices and wipe off the peaks of the sculpt. I would probably drybrush more highlights on the peaks again after mixing with even more white. Lastly, I add a drop of Citadel baal red wash. I won't even use the whole drop. I lightly dry brush some on the hair for a hint of red. Did I just put everone to sleep? I know this is boring but you guys asked. :sleep

Before ordering on line, you may want to go to the Citadel website and look for dealers/suppliers in your area. I buy mine from a comic book store that's about an hour away from me. I hate paying for shipping and the paints are less expensive at the comic book store.

Guys I bought a stuffed horsie from the bookstore so I can scalp him and use the fur on an orangutan. The one I got from Feebay was actually too small, so I gave that one to Ethan. I promised Ethan that once I cut off the blond hair of this horsie, I can replace it with black fur and he was cool with that.

For those of you that don't know I was severely injured on the job back in 2003. Earlier this year the judge passed his ruling that I am totally and permanently disabled and that I should be pensioned. Well my pension goes into effect January 15th and unfortunately I have to live on this one check for the next month. This last check is for one week, so as you can imagine, it's gotta get stretched beyond the imagination. In a world where a loaf of bread, peanut butter, and a gallon of milk costs nearly $15.00 my outlook is bleak. Jessica, I hope you get this before your absence, I don't think I can swing sending $5.00 to Hunter with the DVD, as I already need to pay for the boxes, and postage, and DVD's. Please inform him of my tight situation. Hopefully he'll enjoy the work and it all works out.

Thanks so much for the nice comments for the furry chimp head I made.

After I read some positive comments in the group about my idea for using the brown wigs, I bought two 1/6 scale wigs I found on eBay. (I agree sculpted hair / fur looks better, but I thought I would give it a try.) It took a few weeks to get them. I used my wife’ seam ripper thingy to remove the stitches and flatten the fur / wig. It would be better if we could find a sheet of it that I think Jessica mentioned one time (or shear a stuffed animal). If someone finds a sheet of fur on eBay again, please share it. I may try to make another one. I’ve seen something called hobby fur but it was too thick and ridge to use for a 1/6 scale head.

Using Magic Sculpt, I roughed out a chimp head shape on a Hot Toys (narrowed shoulders version) figure’s neck post. I made the face impression on the putty. Starting with the forehead, I stretched the “wig” material and started super-gluing sections around (but underneath) the face. I then finished with the rest of the head. I was afraid to try to add chimp ears because I kept accidently getting superglue on the hair.

I added another layer of fur around the cheeks and chin. I trimmed the fur, but I think I trimmed too much.

If you try this, be extra careful to use as little super glue as possible. I got it too thick in some places and when I was pressing down, it soaked to the top of the fur. Using less glue and accelerator on the back side of the fur might work better.

Sorry - I can't remember how long it took me. I worked on it a little at a time over several weeks. It seems like it takes me forever to do my projects.

I thought about taking pictures as I went but I thought that was silly and no one would be interested in that. :)

Thanks again for always making me feel so welcome here.

WTF!!!????
I bit the bullet a few weeks ago and ordered BLAM's special package that Jess [i believe it was her] had said was extended. Three Conspiracy posters, all the original cards and landon's dogtags for $50 + $10 shipping.
Just got home and find two pieces of cardboard taped together, shabbily, on my doorstep. Inside are the three posters but NO cards and NO dogtags. No note inside or anything. AND.... it was shipped to me with $5 postage.
What gives? Anyone else have anything like this happen? Anyone know any contact at BLAM?
They never answer any emails I've sent but certainly took my money quickly.

Just in the interest of being fair:
I received an email from Andrew Gaska from BLAM regarding my order. He was quick to apologize and stated that a new employee sent the order out and it definitely should NOT have shipped that way. So, if what he said is shipping out actually is then I will be most happy once I receive it.

The HT Ursus is unquestionably the best available. The SST Ursus is not bad, though it needs a few tweaks. Don't know if anyone has released an Urko...PS

I'm glad you like the photo getoninja, thank you.

Unfortunately it's the background picture that prohibits this picture getting any larger. I have a 27" monitor and it is a little pixelated. I asked for some better photos but no-one's responded.

I like how that Hasbro face looks in your picture. Very serious. Nice job.
My sincerest apologies Sticks! i have over 35,000 files on my computer and I never organized them too well. The shots I've found thus far are more distant shots and not always simian free.
Hi!
I'm a Planet of the Apes fan and would like to buy a Ursus or Urko 12" figure? which one is the best released?
Urko never got made in 1:6 except for customs [I commissioned an Urko sculpt a few years ago]. At this point it is generally agreed that Hot Toys Ursus is the best POTA figure released in terms of overall quality and accuracy.

The hair does have a tendency to "poof" as you put it. A bit of combing or [very] slight spritz can easily make it manageable.

I have the three Hot Toys apes and love them. I also have Sideshow's Gorilla and Cornelius. Personally I don't think the SS Gorilla has any place alongside his HT counterparts. Cornelius, on the other hand, looks fine with them. I would think that Zira would also be good, but not Zaius.

That, again, is a matter of personal choice.

The Hot Toys' offerings are the most accurate in terms of uniform color, accessories, etc....

Sideshow's are great for what they were - the only versions available at the time. While I find the color of the gorilla uniforms "off" I also temd to view them as a fine version for military/law type gorillas. Sideshow also offers the only available 1:6 chimps and orangutans. I have seen customs where the Sideshow versions were "haired" and they have comeout very well done. See DP's version a few posts earlier. I am working on fine tuning a way to hair them up en masse.

All that being said, it is in the end up to YOU whether you mind having molded hair and real hair apes in your collection.
For me? I can't get enough. I have Hot Toys, Sideshow, Hasbro, ApeJoe, customs....

There is definitely something indescribably cool about those original gorillas. Something that Tim Burton just couldn't better.

You're right, Ironman, it's all in the eye of the beholder.

The Sideshow Gorilla was the first figure that I bought. Then I convinced myself to get all the HTs for nostalgia sake, and they relegate the SS. Cornelius is a much better sculpt than the SS Gorilla, with more discernible detail, which is helped by his lighter skin tone. A full-on furred-up HT Cornelius would certainly be more than welcome, though!

No POTA horses released by Sideshow.

However, there are plenty of choices.

Ebay is a great stomping ground [as is ioffer I've found] for some sough after grails.
Marx Best of the West
M & C Power Team
Dragon [DML]
Soldiers of the World
these have all released horses for 12" figures. Some are larger than others and some people feel that one might be better suited than others. Again, personal choice. they vary in color and in price. Shop around and you just might surpise yourself as to what you can find.

IM- Thank you for still working on that for me. I know you won't let me down. I leave for Pasadena on Wednesday morning and don't return till Jan. 2nd. Maybe something by then?

Yes, the HT gorillas are by far the best gorillas on the market. We still have a few loyal SSC fans here but they don't have an HT gorilla in their paws to help turn their loyalty. Maybe someday. Good luck on your purchases. I hope you score a few HT gorillas. They're very cool. My one minor gripe is regarding HT hands, they seem to come off very easily when trying to pose the wrist a certain way. Unless you like to routinely re-pose your figures like I do this probably wont be a factor.

Just looking at those DiD horses reminds me of when Jom compared them looking like rats. Wow they do look ugly. I think it's the eyes.

Have a great Holiday!!

Sticks, my collection is modest compared to most here. It consists of:

Astro Taylor
Slave Taylor
Slave Nova
Astro Brent
Zira
Cornelius
Regular Zaius
Ursus
2 Gorilla Soldiers
Mutant Leader
Mutant Jailor

I also have some Hasbro 12" and most of the Medi smaller scale set.

Any chance you could take some good closeup shots of the headsculpts on those? I'm wondering if they would tranlate well into 1:6 versions if enlarged.

I'm thinking he might be more geared to being a gorilla, but then they're my faves!
My hairing process I saw posted over in the OSW and it is basicly making a guaze head piece, molded to the shape of the head you want to hair. It can then be removed, have hair applied and then replaced on the sculpt.

Thanks so much. I know exactly what you mean. I kept looking at the ears and was thinking chimp paint scheme. Then I look at the nose and think that needs a gorilla paint scheme.

I have started a couple more simians using a modified casting of that head and I think I'll try to modify one into a gorilla.

I wouldn’t mind selling a few of the castings like the one below. (That dang RTV is expensive.) That is assuming I’m not breaking any rules. (I didn’t sculpt it as you know.)I can also cast just the head. However, it definitely takes some modifications to fit the figure neck / body. I used the slow cure resin, but there are still little air bubbles and areas to fix.

Thanks again.

I think I am finished with this one. I'll try a few things different next time, hopefully learning from my mistakes.

Darkness Predator - I really like this chimp/gorilla sculpt of yours. The face is very well done and really leans to a generic gorilla mask IMO. I look forward to seeing your transformation of him into such. Please remember to post some pictures when you're done. I like that paint job on that chimp of yours. :exactly:

I just sold those 6 POTA (BLAM) cards, 3 posters and dogtags on eBay. :clap

Pompiato - Welcome to the tread. It's always great to hear from new people with such an enthusiam.

Sticks - Thanks for asking, but I haven't been working on any projects except for the ones I recently did for KFog. I've been selling off parts of my collection over the last few months in an effort to slim down my collection.

I've been away for quite a while. Hello to KFog, Jessica, Ironman and Proto. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. :)

Sticks, thanks for the disc!!

Pompiato, there have been a few astronauts through here over the years. I'll see if I still have mine in photobucket and post them if I do. I had the usual Taylor and Brent and added Dodge, Landon, Skipper, Burke, Virdon, Jonesy and a few extras to suit my own tastes.

Congrats Angel on selling those BLAM posters/cards. I still wear my dogtags cause I love military gear. Actually, someone in Ethan's class asked me if I was an army person when I went to pick him up from school because I am always in military clothing. Kinda embarassing but hey, that's my taste.

Yesterday I almost bought a pair of the most delicious boots ever, but my sister talked me out of them. They went almost thigh high and would have been perfect for my Romulan costume. Guess I'll just have to sew those boots when I cross that road...

I am almost done with my latest commissioned sculpt, so I'm going to start up on my two sewing projects that I owe. It's just hard now because we have company until January 3--I guess I'll just put that in my head and get the gears going so that I am mentally ready to get it done. I'll be busy the first two weeks of January getting an Urko pullover mask done, the life-sized jacket I have promised someone, and a pair of 1:6 boots and a 1:6 outfit for a blue lady that wears white. I'm bad with names...

Well my trip to Pasadena this morning was cancelled because my friend that was flying out of CT had his flight cancelled. :monkey2

I was up all night packing and getting ready, Im pretty tired.

Angel, I'm about to do the same. I'm in dire needs of funds and I have all the old SS civil war uniforms I'd like to start selling. Also, do you have any Ape City pictures that don't have anybody in the shot?

IM - You're welcome. You didn't watch the video did you? :slap
Please let me know when you do. There are two deleted gorilla scenes added. :wink1: Although rather quick, they have not been seen by anyone here and was hoping for some feedback from Jessica, KFog, and you. I'd like to do another Ape film but can't do it alone. Minimal dialogue and a lot of action.

Pompiato and Gates 70 Congratulations. He's an awesome score. That's also a great price considering you can still find him. These guys are getting hard to find.

I know that HT figures sell for more but I just can't fathom spending over $100. for a figure now a days, but I'm also not working so that doesn't help.:monkey4
But like you, I made an exception for these gorillas. I hope more are coming.

Would you guys mind taking pictures when your Generals arrive? We all love seeing pictures here. Again, Congrats!

Hey Gates...

I would advise a different horse. These horses just don't look right. I'm sure you could find one a lot better. Some I have seen even have articulation. I have even seen the one you linked in person and it will surely disappoint you.

This is my collection of Marx Thunderbolt horses. <a href="http://s302.photobucket.com/albums/nn102/apecityoutfitters/?action=view&amp;current=Cavalier008.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn102/apecityoutfitters/Cavalier008.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I have two more not photographed, and those I can't remember the manufacturer, but supposedly it is 1:6 scale and it's a model of a horse with the inside and guts and skeleton--those are still boxed up and need to be glued together.

I am trying to find a photograph of Zira and Cornelius with one of my horsies but I can't find it at the moment. :gah:

I agree with Jungle--don't buy those furry rat-faced horses. You will be really disappointed.

Here's a photo of gorillas on horseback:

I have never seen those horses in person--only in photos, but there's something not right with them anatomically. There was a brave soul on the OSW that skinned that horse up and modified it to have the proper musculature. It looked wayyyyy better after his work on it.

There's also a guy from Mexico that sells 1:6 scale horses, but the specific breed (is that the right word?) is not appropriate to the type of horses on Planet of the Apes. I will have to try to find that link for you...the horses are more than $100 but they are really beautiful.

Here is a discussion on OSW with photos of various horse types available:

I can definitely see the "furry" horses have anatomical issues now that ive had a proper look of them comparred to the horses you have both suggested.
I came across this custom horse while doing some research.

You found it! :hi5: That's the Tony Barton rework of the rat-faced horse. If you are a member of OSW, you can see his horse build-up here:
http://www.onesixthwarriors.com/forum/sixth-scale-action-figure-news-reviews-discussion/85136-rebuilding-did-horse.html

Here is a photo of that horse after it was skinned, before he worked his magic on it...
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g53/TonyBarton/more%20dollies/DiD-flayed-horse-1.jpg

And that photo you posted above is the finished product. One of these days, if I ever find the time, I will try to make the Thunderbolt horse a little bigger by elongating the legs and parts of the body and resculpting. I think it would be a good learning experience. Someday...just don't have time now.

Do you know how much those furry horses are going for now? It would be a real fun project, but I think it's still an expensive armature. Plus--it's really creeping me out, seeing the horse flayed like that. I don't know if I would have enough nerves to cover it up with clay after peeling it up...it's just too disgusting to look at and I don't trust myself to not feel grossed out and toss the project. I am already feeling queasy trying to imagine touching that thing.

Do you want me to hold off copying it and to wait for you to make a new set? Or do you want my husband to add credits to it before I burn a copy? I am not sure how to do that but I am sure he can do that--he edits the daycare performance tapes.

PZ--if you are venturing here and happen to see this, is it too late to ask for a Tangled movie poster? I saw the movie and totally love it. I didn't think I could love a new movie as much as I loved seeing Kung Fu Panda. I can pay for s/h.

Sticks--my sleeping patterns are also shot...since my sister's family is here from Chicago. We have to wait until the kids are in bed before I can turn on my samurai movies. I just saw Zatoichi the Outlaw. Soooo good.

"Hoping for some feedback from Jessica, KFog, and you. I'd like to do another Ape film but can't do it alone. Minimal dialogue and a lot of action."

Hi Jessica, :wave

Hi Adam! I received your cd yesterday and think that is was very well done and entertaining! I love the Apes and Civil war of course! I appreciate the time that you took in making this and feel privileged to own a copy. By the way, I owe you some postage! Thanks again, Kent.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!I am so F'n p!$$@d off!! BLAM still hasn't corrected their error. The CEO emailed me and told me he'd take care of it personally the following Monday. That was the Monday before Christmas!! I still haven't gotten anything and now he's not returning emails. At first glance the customer service really impressed me. I'm no longer impressed. The "deal" they offered on these items pales when considering the 3 posters were damaged and the rest not even included. :monkey4

Sticks--I just saw your 1:6 work. Incredible stuff. I really loved seeing the gorillas by the campfire. So freaking awesome. I want to see more!

There were credits on the Figure It Out contest.

A good new year to all, though I shall have to toast with plain grape juice; the "plus" gives me a migraine...PS

Hello Everyone,

Since I was alittle boy, I've loved "my" apes. Being a child of the 70's I wore the costumes on Halloween & played with all the toys. Up until 10 Years ago, I had a very large collection of megos, sets, posters, etc. Some really hard to find items.

Unfortunately, I lost everything in a house fire. It took me almost 10 years to get over the dreams, and sentimental value that my collection had.

I came here, cause I saw what a tight ape loving family there is here!

At this stage in the game I am a newbie, but I do know what I like. If any of you can lead me in the correct path it would be great.

I would like to get some custom Sideshow soilders. Around 3. So if anyone has extra, please advise. I would also like a General Ursus as well. One of you guys had a cigar smoking ape, I must have that!. That is by far my favorite right now. I love General Ursus & Caesar.

I saw one of you guys had a backback solider for sale. Hit me up with your extras.

For now the hot toys are out of my budget. I see that they are like $200 apiece? So I have to stick with Sideshow & Hasbro.

Any good sources for "un" customized apes?

Also, the heads that I see being made, can the old heads pop off, and the new one can go right on?

Sorry for all the questions. Happy New Year!

Frontline Hero Heads is a great custom head site, but go directly to the order page as its updated much more often than the general site.

Stickman, I will let everyone know the particulars on Urko by the end of the week if things work out.

The frontline head, I see it on there price sheet. Does that fit on the Sideshow Body or Hasbro body. Also it says comes ready for dragon neck post or can be Modified to a Sideshow neck is easy and can be done upon request. So If I want this for a sideshow, I have to tell them?
