Hey guys, just getting ready for the big day tomorrow. I'll be accompanying my parents and going to my sister's house in Yorktown Heights, NY.
I guess it's been so long since I ate real meat that the Tofurkey really hits the spot. I love the stuff, :) That and the giblet gravy, lol
I saw a cool looking stockade over at R&R Customs that I thought I'd give it a whirl. It looks easy enough, so says my father. I think it will go well with my American Civil War collection.

Thank you. Thanks also, Sticks. I worked on him some more. I really want him to look like Burke. That schnoz is really damned hard to capture. I'm going to leave him alone for a couple of days so that when I look at him again, I will do so with fresh eyes. At least his eyes are more level now.

I'd say you're well in the ballpark; heck, I've seen production pieces that were less accurate(I've also had to fix pieces that were less accurate, but that's another story). You have a definite talent for the work, and are in the envyable position of doing it on your own time. This is not to say that it's less fun when you're getting paid for it; you just don't always get to choose your subjects...PS

Your Burke is dead on! Of course I will have to comission you to make a set of clothes for a Burke and Virdon. Will your head fit a Sideshow body? I have not switched any heads as of yet although I do have the Urko head IM had made some time ago.

The FZ Taylor and the Mutant Jailer are very hard to come by. Usually the Mutant Jailer goes for a pretty penny when he shows up.
What ones do you have so far?
I have 1 unopened FZ Taylor I bought a while back from EBAY for $$ and I just got a opened one for $65 ( sweet). I also have the BPOA Opened Taylor.
Do you freaks like the BPOA Taylor ? Is that one in demand ? What about the other exclusive SS POA figures ? I don't understand why the FZ Taylor is so expensive and hard to get.

I think the front pic of Burke carries more of a likeness than teh side angle one. And, if i may, I think Virdon needs to be a bit more slender in the face. It is absolutely incredible how quickly you have been able to churn out work of art after work of art. I truly envy your abilities!!

Nice Jess, Does Pete have the glass eyes? If so, how do you feel about them? It's hard to tell from the picture what they're really like. Will you be doing the painting?
Jessica
12-04-2009, 06:39 PM
No, Pete does not have the glass eyes, but Alan does. Had to dig out sockets to place them in there... I eventually covered it up with more clay because the glass was too slippery and I couldn't sculpt his eyelids nicely around the eyeballs.

I don't know, but thanks, Angel. I've missed you!
I just wanted him to look like Alan so much that I kept massaging the clay and kept adding paper thin layers to build up the facial muscles and blending it so there were no edges between layers. It helped to pause the DVD, take a photo, and upload so that I had sideview and front view of his profile for reference. And Dave Ballard also sent me photos to help.

Jessica - This sculpt of Pete only needs these 2 features corrected and then I believe it would be pretty darn accurate.
His face seems a bit wide compared to the picture in the background. Could you squish it together on each side as indicated by the pink arrows?
Aside from that minor tweak, I think eliminating the square head effect on top of his hair would also greatly improve your sculpt.
Don't mean to nitpic - after all, you are the master! :bow

Too bad DC doesn't know the meaning of 1:6 scale. Their figures would be great if they were in scale with the rest of the 1:6 world. And if they changed out those cut joints for better ones.

Yeah - I packed it all up. I want a vacation from working on all this 1/6 stuff. It's consumed so much of my time over the last 3 years. It's so much easier to sit on the sidelines and just watch everyone else with their projects.
I’m still interested in seeing other projects. I pop in on occasion and look at the thread; however, I just have nothing to add because of my inactivity.
Have you been working on anything JJ?

That is criminal Angel, but I surely know how it is. After the amount of TLC I put in building Ape City, then to tear it down and throw it away really hurt. But "killing your baby'" is what they tought in film school. I still feel that Ape City was one of my best sets to date, that and the cave in A World's Desire. :naughty
IM you mind if I roll with your ANSA Omega Team idea? You'll get credit for the story, of course. I want to bring everyone in this thread in on this one.
IM - Story
PZ Continuity supervisor, or script supervisor
Jess, Costumes Design
Angel, and JJ - Prop design
JJ - Maybe DP? (you could help me with selecting framing and angle in preproduction.) :)
Unless other ideas come about. I picked this story as it could easily set up for more to follow if it works out.

No Angel, I haven't been doing much of anything recently. I've been waiting for someone to make an Abbott and Costello. Sideshow has said they are reviving 1/6 Universal Monsters so it gives me some hope that they might take a stab at Bud and Lou.

Thanks, Dr. Z! Alan's eyes I am still tweaking, since the were off-kilter. Pete needs a new hairdo. They're both still being massaged. I'm thinking of taking a mold of Pete's face so I can redo his hair...and I keep tweaking Alan's eyes but it's not happening yet. I just have to get in the mood of making molds, but I'm not in the mood. I've got to keep keeping on with the sculpting. Angel, that Bloody lawgiver is already climbing in price, and quickly. I have no idea why people bid on things with so much time remaining. There are still five days left! Another thing I've experienced on ebay is the manipulation of bids by sellers with multiple accounts, and when they aren't outbid they write back to say the other bidder didn't come through and ask if the next person (real winner) wants to buy it at the new higher price :banghead Just an experience I have encountered numerous times, so I steer clear of Ebay most of the time.
It's like going to a Tag Sale and asking "How much" only to get some ridiculous price. It makes one wonder if the seller is really trying to sell the item or just showing it off. :monkey4
We should take an inside poll and guess how much the awesome bloody is going to go for. My guess is $150.

Sticks how do you plan to get the hair of your figure to a dark brown? And how are you going to add a beard?
11 PM--the mold has cured properly. I was able to take out Pete's head without tearing the mold. I will pour some liquid resin in there tomorrow and hopefully it will be a good mold. The only bummer is I'm going back to the saltmines tomorrow so it will have to wait until after I get back home.

Good morning Jessica,
I was thinking maybe applying a couple dabs of shoe polish. :huh
For the beard, I was thinking about using burn't cork, and smudging it in, more like a 5 O'Clock shadow. What do you think. I would ask Angel for a beard again but I'm not sure if a sculpted beard would work well with the rooted hair. What do you guys think?
Jessica
12-17-2009, 08:24 AM
I don't think sculpted hair would work with rooted hair. Five o'clock shadow wouldn't work unless you are thinking of the TV series...I think you would have to use your own hair Sticks, and beard him up that way. You should try it, and see how it looks. It probably isn't as difficult as it sounds...just do it in layers. Pinch the hair in batches and start from the bottom of the chin and work your way up. You can always peel it off.
stickman
12-17-2009, 09:34 AM
I will have to try that. At least I can do that much while I'm here in CT. I'm going to Home Depot tomorrow to help my mother pick up some things. Is there anything there I could use, or should buy?
What kind of glue, hair should I use? Is this stuff better bought at a hobbie shop of some sort? All the little niche stores are gone to the wind. Maybe some Horse, or camel hair? If you think this I can see if my father has some with his Native American gear.
All help is greatly appreciated.
Jessica
12-17-2009, 10:29 AM
Sticks just try to match the texture of whatever hair the doll already has with whatever you have available, even if it means cutting some of your hair off. Probably just use regular Elmer's glue that dries clear. It sounds like it would be a fun project. Good luck and I can't wait to see the outcome!! I wouldn't worry about trimming the beard until he's all haired up.

When I wasn't looking, Ashton proceeded to take my perfect mold of Pete and tore it in half. What became two seams are now three. WHY GOD WHY???
Anyway, muttering darkly I rubber-banded the mold together and poured some plastic in there. The mold was perfect except for that effing extra seam now, and there are the usual bubbles near the nose. Anyway, it's still salvageable, with a little finessing.
Still mad at myself for leaving it laying around for him to tear in half.

Jessica - Do NOT use glue on the silicone mold. Just mix up a 50/50 mix of fresh silicone and paint it on both halves of your mold were it was tore. Stick it together and wait 24 hours. This stuff adheres very well to itself once dried. :)

I hope Hot Toys produces Zira, Zaius and Cornelius, too!!
Say....on Feebay Ada Chan's Brent cast is only selling for $9 after S/H. There's 10 of them available. I've never seen it go down this low before.
There's also a wooden Planet of the Apes shovel on Feebay for $250 BIN. 1:1 scale, used as a movie prop to the original 1968 movie.
Of course, there's also lots of other bits and pieces from the 2001 abomination. But I digress.
Hi Jess! I bought the Ada Chan Brent sculpt painted and was very inpressed by it. I just need to find a petite tan body to mount it on. Maybe a dml/Dragon body (it should be tan though) more accurate to the movie.

Those Kiss photos are great. Amazing that one can take photos in concerts now, as opposed to a decade ago... And the quality is so good.
I picked up a 1/6 Gene from McFarlane to battle apes hoping he would do the others, but it never happened...

The guy who owns and had created McFarlane Toys is from here in the Phoenix Metro area. He owns at least two stores here. I wonder if I should ask him to make Planet of the Apes figures?

Keep McFarlane away from the Apes. His concept of an "articulated" figure has maybe a dozen joints at most, and his hiring practices are byzantine at best. In order to get a job sculpting with him, he REQUIRES a B.A., regardless of previous work experience, so someone like me, a non-degreed pro with over 15 years in the field is not an acceptable hire. And no, I haven't actually applied with him; aside from the job requirements, I don't want to live in N. Jersey(the 4th level of Hell IMHO)...PS

T'Pring is on my mind! Time is getting close. January 23 or January 24 is my deadline. I think as I have 2 solid weekends to work on it, I should be fine. I've been too sick to make it, but I do have all the fabric. I hope I find my old shoes....otherwise I might have to sacrifice a blue pair of shoes that I will spray silver. PLus I have to buy the hair pieces and put together a wig...It won't be as hard as Zira's wig...I just need to make a mongo braid.

McFarlane makes a lot of my favorites, I guess you can't really call them figures. They probably would look very similar to the medicoms. They really dropped the ball on the Jessica Biel chainsaw figure though... I was going to have her sign one when she was signing at the shrine a few years ago(promoting Blade Trinity), until I saw how terrible the likeness was...

Jessica
12-20-2009, 01:49 PM
I was out yesterday and forgot to pour some resin in there. I just did, so I'll post photos of how it comes out. After the resin cures, I will re-attach the tears and I'll try another resin pour tonight. The mold material says it fully cures in 4 hours, and I'll be painting the tears very lightly so it should cure fast.

Jess, take a bit of advice from someone who's been in the sculpting/casting biz(professionally and on my own time)for quite a few years? Take Your Time. I know that you can't wait to get the casting rolling, but it's far better to give the rubber all the time it needs to cure and be confident that it'll stand up to the demands of casting. Remember, every cast takes a bit out of the mold, and this one is starting with a handicap. You should also find a nice high shelf to store your molds on. A sound thrashing might also be in order...PS

Guys, news on the Apes Conspiracy, per Drew Gaska:
The book has been delayed until the Fall 2010, but we should have advance copies available for sale at San Diego Comic Con 2010. Attached please find an exclusive image and a sketch of the cover for you to post. The exclusive painting is by artist Dan Dussault and is entitled 'The Bridge to Ape City'. The cover sketch is by Jim Steranko.
There are two wonderful new paintings posted on the apes yahoo group, so check them out.
Guys let me know if you are interested in Pete's cast...or if you want to hold out and wait for Alan and I can ship them together. Just send me a PM. I can only offer them unpainted because my painting skills are subpar. $25 per head. I'll pay for s/h to keep things simple. You will have to drill out the neck to fit your figure.

Jungle, how lovely it is to once again see your apes like that. I wish Sideshow would churn up some more apes only because they are more affordable than Hot Toys. But really, any new apes made is a good thing.
I actually started my costume tonight. I was looping Escape from the Planet of the Apes in the background. A really big part of posting and sharing pictures here at Sideshow Freaks is looking forward to the feedback from others: be it good, bad, perhaps a question, or maybe even a simple word of encouragement.
When 18 people click on a picture and fail to leave a comment that suggests to me that it's really not worth sharing the picture.
Over the last few months, I've actually been trying to wean myself off of the computer.
I can see how much time is actually wasted in front of this thing. Taking a good look at the habits of my children on this computer (let’s not forget myself) it’s easy to see why I want to change. It’s really consuming all of us.
At the same time, I can't even come close to displaying all of my custom figures due to a lack of room. I've got way to many toys. Yet, I cannot bring myself to sell any of them. I think there’s something seriously wrong with that. It’s a sickness that I’m struggling with. Why continue to collect and make these things?
I'm really struggling to stop this collection addiction of mine. It's a good thing that so few people ever respond to the ape photos. If they did, that would only push me to do more, at a time when I'm really trying to stop.

Sorry Angel. I know how hard it is with addictions--I for one am not helping you in that way. I was just so darn excited to know you were working on some ape related customs. I loved seeing all of your different chimps. It makes them so much more real and believable this way.
I have been looking at my pile of crap and I see that I have a big pile of crap. I need to deduct/purge. I only like to make these things, I am not really a collector. I have to seriously think about what I'm going to do with something when I've finally done with it...but it's just so hard. You put so much effort into a custom and it's hard to let go. I'll have to think some more about this. :monkey4:monkey4:monkey4
I don't know if I could wean myself off of the computer--I'm totally addicted but it also helps when I'm at the slavemines. Access to other worlds helps to keep me from going insane.
I forget that there are others beyond us in the apes thread.

I finally got the Hot Toys General Ursus (Christmas gift).
It's amazing. Love the detail and the sculpt. The hands work great holding the weapons.
My only nits would be that the helmet will ride up with the slightest adjust of the pose but it's to be expected with the way it's sculpted. Once it's pushed down again it stays pretty well and looks good.
Also I think the wood grain on the weapons is a little too extreme. I like the subtle painted grain on the Sideshow weapons a little better.
Still, an amazing figure and right now my favorite piece in my collection.
I took some pix that people can check out here:

I check in from time to time.
I just picked up the Hot Toys Gorilla Soldier yesterday. Found him for a good price.
I don't like him as much as Ursus but he's not too bad.
I'll post some pix when I get around to it, along with some detailed opinions.
Hope everone has a happy new year.

Happy New Year to all of my ape friends! Happy Birthday, GoApeBilly!
Sorry guys not ape related...but I am a geek. I am soooo excited about my costume. I FINALLY found a pair of silver stockings for T'Pring (under bridal hosiery--isn't that so appropriate?). And yay, I don't have to report to the slavemines this weekend, so I can finish up my costume.
Today I colored my Vulcan ears with makeup and my sister didn't even notice them because they almost blend with my own ears.

Jess, did you ever make Dr. smocks for the surgery scene? I'm sure you would do a phenomenal job.
Jessica
01-02-2010, 01:09 AM
Angel has Dr. Galen's smock and the assistant chimp's green outfit. I bought 2 shirts from Goodwill to make those. Hard to find the fabric with the right weight for the scale.
Good to see you visit Central City once in awhile, King. Keep faith in your krusade always, and fight to the death.

Yeah, I miss those days.
Well, after my failed attempt my father gave it a go. Here is how he stands thus far. With the Holidays, he got pushed back a bit on the priority list. :whip

I think you just need to tame it down a bit and then match his hair and dirty him up, and he should be good to run through the cornfields. :banana

Thanks Jess. I wish his hair was longer on top.
Jessica
01-02-2010, 07:10 PM
I am curious how his hair is stuck on. Is it hair plugs? You can rehair...I think you just have to pull out the plugs and then use a broken needle to push in the new hair--put in really long hair--so that you can trim it to the right length.
It just takes time, but anyone can do it.
Jessica

Guys, I was just thinking about Stick's re-hairing...and decided to work on my Hasbro gorilla!! Anyway, here he is before his makeover. I am not planning to "rehair" him with additional hair--I was going to sculpt hair on top.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/6973/dsc02363z.jpghttp://img693.imageshack.us/img693/3697/dsc02362vk.jpg
This is why you don't get so *** drunk on New Year's eve! You never know what kind of condition you will be in when you wake up...
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/8266/dsc02365b.jpg
And then it was too difficult to remove all the hair--SOOOOO much glue in there!!
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/8470/dsc02364m.jpg
So I decided to cut out his face. It tore off easily enough with all the hair plugs they surrounded it with!! Besides, I was kind of worried with baking the head up in the oven after sculpting Super Sculpey on top because of the type of plastic the hair was made of. There was NO WAY I could remove all of that hair...and I am too impatient!
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5853/dsc02367lk.jpg
Here are the two sculpts side by side--sorry the pictures aren't the best, but you get the idea!! As you can see the Hot Toys gorilla is still in the middle of dental surgery. I haven't made it permanent yet...but I did remove his stupid top teeth which made him look so utterly goofy...and resculpted a bottom set of teeth. Angel says I can make it smaller than this...but you know how easily I get distracted and never finish anything. Well, that's not going to happen in 2010!! Guess what I am thinking? I am thinking that Hasbro sculpted a better set of teeth than Hot Toys did!!!
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/7794/dsc02376a.jpg
Then...how would the Hot Toys gorilla look with a face transplant? Hmmm.>>>>>????
This is how he looks! Interestink, HUH????? He doesn't look THAT bad, does he???? I kinda like him...I'll try to take better photos when it's daytime, since the camera takes better photos with natural light.

Oh well. That's it for the night. Tomorrow I will be doing the tango with the sewing machine so I won't be checking in until late at night. I hope you have comments for me when I log in--good or bad. I'll roll with the punches.

Jess, you're kidding, right? Granted, the HT teeth could be better, but a Hasblo face on an HT figure? Sacrilege!...PS

Jess, you beat me to the punch ( no surprise I guess). I've had a defaced hasbro gorilla on my desk since I got the HT's. Just hadn't had the courage to take the HT face off. I would suggest repainting the hasbro versions. I did tat and, even with my meager skills, I think they look better. I'm even converting a gorilla into an ugly chimp!!

I think the hasbro and ht gorilla faces look about the same. Though the eyes seem way to big on the hasbros. Can they be repainted to look a little smaller?

01-03-2010, 07:33 PM
wow those heads are more similiar than I thought. I agree about the Hasbro eyes looking too white, or being too big. I would love to see if that face could be saved to add variety.
Jessica
01-03-2010, 11:00 PM
I think the Hasbro face is just a tad too big. Just so very slightly...and yeah, he's got cartoony eyes. He does add to the variety, though. Not that I'd have enough chimpchange to ever have an army of Hot Toys gorillas....
I have been at some serious sewing for a few hours now. Now I know why I keep putting stuff like this off--because it's TOUGH!!! I hit a snag, so I'm done for the night. I probably won't get to finish the jacket I'm doing until next weekend, because the boys' school/homework and me as piano police is back on the playbill. :(

The torch is from the 7" Frankenstein figure from Sideshow:

The torch looks good with 1/6 scale Indian Jones figures too.

Clever ape! I would never have known that about the wall/floor. Looks fab.
I got my expanding material finally!! I already poured it into Pete's mold. It takes 24 hours to cure. I probably messed it up, since it said I had a 10-minute work time, so I rushed it. It's probably got a thousand air bubbles. Oh well. I'll find out tomorrow how badly I did. After I take it out of the mold, I soak it in water and let it expand. I should probably read the directions more thoroughly. I just couldn't wait.
Wow Jungle--fabulous photograph!!
