This place is always better when JJ's here.
I actually painted the body of Landon. That was the first humans I ever worked on. You can tell he was painted. It's got lot's of paint on his skin.
Later on, I learned to just dry brush the skin tones on the humans as I did with your BridgeKeeper. I used just enough dry brushing on it to kill the plastic sheen.
Thanks Angel... The feeling is mutual!

I don't recall how JJ did his frame Ironman, but I do remember how I did mine. I started off using a small custom wooden frame. Later, I gave it a melted look using ... tah dah... apoxie
I made a custom frame out of balsa and wood putty for the burnt melting effect. I think Angel and my frame look so much the same is because of the way we painted them

It's always great to hear from you buddy.
I'm just posting some of my Civil War, and Native American Indians on R&R's site. It's a slow site but they are great people there, just like the ones in this thread.
Time to go make dinner, take my medication, then off to bed to read.
JJ how's work going for you, and are you working on any new Projects? I'll catch your reply tomorrow. Have a good night buddy, and everyone else. :wave:sleep

I see you liked my Sam Elliott IS Caspy idea, huh? LOL
That was a GREAT find that YOU came up with Ironman! That sculpt of "Caspy" is just awesome! However, Mine is actually a mask, not a full head sculpt like you would think. It comes off to reveal the Sideshow mutant. The actual SS mutant is hidden underneath that mask. JJ came up with idea.
All those apes you showed are absolutely stunning. What an army we could amass if we ALL got together. :naughty
Thanks again Ironman. Some of them are lacking and can't compete with the others. That's just the way some projects are. That's why that one is called a background chimp. He'll be in the far background. Sometimes you strike gold and sometimes you don't.

I'll post a picture of the Fat Man tonight if you'd like Ironman. I can get his face very similar, but it lacks details such as "wrinkles". My painting isn't something I'm proud of on him. I spent too much time on him and just have to accept him as done… for now. Perhaps someday I'll try to rework him so that I am pleased. Not now though.
I will post some pictures of my Dodge tonight too. I made him about 2-3 years ago and I know I can improve on that sculpt now. I'll post the BEFORE pictures tonight. Sometime, really soon, I'll be re-doing him. :)

I just saw that PZ, Thank you very much. I rarely do facebook, except to post my films or pictures, until i get my own website. As you can tell I don't do much else, oh and to talk to other family members. You are right, FB is the new Myspace. A lot of people have nothing better to do. I do like the video upload feature though, I've lost way too many videos from burned out hard drives and computer crashes. Thanks again PZ it means a lot to me.

KFog - Everyone is going to have his or her own opinion, but it's really up to you to decide what is best for the project. Cost is always a BIG factor to me. I bought about 10 dragon bodies (from eBay) and turned 90% of them into various Conquest apes. I've also used generic bodies from Sideshow for the taller apes.
Ironman once talked about the possibility of getting interested persons together and then buying some shorter apelike bodies. He posted it somewhere on this thread. I remember he posted a picture and talked about the shipping costs.
For me, it all boils down to low cost. I believe that almost anything will work for my needs. So far, I've used Dragon bodies and generic Sideshow bodies.
Hope that helps. :angelsmil

You're right Angel, the tent does look like that. Anyone have any Edgar G. Robinson or James Brolin sculpts?? :rotfl
Kfog, Angel's right (again), the body choices come down to what each person's favorites and abilites are. I tried to get an order together for some Yamato bodies, thats the ones Angel was talking about, awhile ago. No one wanted in at the time and I'm not even sure if the place still has them They are shorter than the average 1:6 body which works well for most apes. The articulation is reminiscent of the old Ideal Captain Action bodies.
Other than that a BBi G3 or G3.5 will work as will recent Hot Toys bodies. I don't have one but it looks like Sideshow's Prometheus body would also do the job. Those are the easiest bodies to switch heads to that I know of. Of course, if one wants to adapt the neck of a figure or the underside of the POTA head then whole other realms of possibilities open up.

Kfog - These red jumpsuits can frequently be found on eBay. If you have some extra SS gorilla heads, buy a generic body and a red jumpsuit. After painting a pair of boots the right color red you’ve got an easy custom! Do it!
I then attached some red ribbon to the jumpsuit to simulate pockets. I also put apoxy over the human hands to simulate hair. :angelsmil

The ape bodies are unique as the use the roto cast heads. You'll need the peg I believe so this could be a challenge, also the apes weren't on 12" figure bodies as they only stood about 11.5" tall. Maybe you can use the DiD, or Dragon DML young bodies, i.e. Hitler Youth bodies and mod the neck to accept the Gorilla head?

like to thank Angel, Ironman, and Stickman for their responses. I would have to say that the dml Dragon bodies would be my preference because of the thinner bodies. The only thing is adapting a neck plug to the original dml neck.

I would like to make this Aldo!
Using the collar piece from the Hasbro Ursus and putting it on the Sideshow gorilla body would help to accomplish that "Aldo look". In fact, I wonder if that would even look good on a chimp. Do you remember the cartoon chimp Ironman posted a few days back?
After that, what's left for Aldo, a sword? :angelsmil

Do you think that bondo would be cheaper than apoxie for such a big project?
It would be much cheaper to get Bondo than all that apoxie. Wal-Mart sells iBondo for around $15 per gallon. I'd probably need 2 gallons for her robe, the stone rubble at her base and the book alone. However, the details of her face, her crown and hair would have to be apoxie. Other areas such as Lady Liberty's torch, and portions of the book, would have to be apoxie as well.
The apoxie allows you to sculpt. Bondo will be a great cost saver to me! I used a quart of Bondo on the Doomsday Bomb while fashioning the cone portion of the missile. That was before I ever heard of apoxie.

That's a very clever idea. To me, I never liked the oversized zippers, but I guess that could easily be rectified by just cutting it off. I need to get a few of the Red jumpsuits. Conquest was a great one. I've watched the DVD PZ gave out four times already. :D
Conquest always bothered me because they forgot the apes had simian feet.
like to thank Angel, Ironman, and Stickman for their responses. I would have to say that the dml Dragon bodies would be my preference because of the thinner bodies. The only thing is adapting a neck plug to the original dml neck.
So another question for you all! Do they have a BBI type neck that adapts/mounts onto a dml neck?
No, they won't fit DML right off. I have used the cover tube from old CrazyGlue containers, cut down and glued into the top offthe neck hole in the ape head, then the opening of the tube gets glued down onto the figure's neck stud.
Hi IM! Is Yamato the same as In the Past Toys?
No they are different entities. ITPT bodies are not much good, IMHO, for much other than fodder.

Thanks again Dr. Z, that Dodge head is actually a custom head. As you may recall, I started with the Sgt Barney head (also known as: my version of "Landon"). I shaved him and then rebuilt him back up with some of Dodges features. (I even shaved his nose down and gave him bigger nostrils.) I added the orange apoxie today and it's drying right now. I gave Dodges hair some texture today. (See it?) It was smooth as a baby’s bottom prior to today.
You can see the Sgt Barney underneath as I'm working on him today. :angelsmil
Those female apes will be "background apes" as Ironman says. Lastly, that gorilla simply needed more hair...

A gorilla strikes him and he falls off of the cliff into the water below making a big splash onto his back. Then two gorillas drag his unconscious body from water and onto the shore. That's it! That’s the last we see of him. The next time we see him is after he’s been lobotomized!
That's a good sized gap for his adventure on the Planet of the Apes. I think Planet of the Apes Conspiracy is going to rock! It'll probably address Cornelius and Zira's charge of heresy too.

The apes in Conquest didn't design their clothes, or the shoes they wore, their masters did, so IMHO I don't think there is an inconsistancy, unless you want to make the argument that ape feet wouldn't fit, which I think they could. Maybe a bit snug, but...

I am most anxious to see how they write this "conspiracy" story. However, after Landon is struck on the head during the hunt, he is part of the humans captured that day that fell into the hole. It will be interesting to see how they write themselves out of that hole.

Send me a private message [PM], that’s how I’ll determine who the first four people are and no other way.
I’ll ship each unpainted mask to you for $7 each. You must paint it yourself; I am NOT willing to do this.
I also have one (1) red robe for sale. (Denise made an extra one and then had me pick out the robe that I liked best for my figure. That means you’re getting leftovers. Sorry.) I’ll ship it to you for $3.

I was not counting on doing this, and I never really saw this coming, but some things just seem to occur unexpectedly. I’m glad this happened last night.
I looked at my gorillas last night, and I thought to myself “Many of these gorillas need more hair, like in the first installment.” It turns out this quest started to unfold last night for me, and I’m working on it once again right now. In addition to that, those 2 female apes and Dodge are also in the pipeline and being worked upon today.
I’m hoping to have it all off of my dining room table by tonight. I can see the difference in the gorillas. I hope you will see it too. Later ape fans!

Well here are the gorilla heads with more hair added. Can you even tell? While working on the final gorilla head, I bumbled upon a really neat sculpting technique for the hair. Look at 2nd head from the left. His hair seems messier than the others. That's something new I just learned how to do. I’ll be using that method more often on future sculpts.

The apes in Conquest didn't design their clothes, or the shoes they wore, their masters did, so IMHO I don't think there is an inconsistancy, unless you want to make the argument that ape feet wouldn't fit, which I think they could. Maybe a bit snug, but... I love Conquest....
I know the apes didn't design the shoes. However, the cost cutting measure of putting them all in shoes was nothing more than just that. Chimp feet would never fit in those tiny little human shoes.
You guys are being silly. Who really cares? It's only a SciFi movie. If the apes feet in human shoes bothers you, think about this:
Dr. Zaius wearing riding boots? Ouch!
General Ursus and the other gorillas wearing boots? Ouch!
Several Chimps in the TV series wore gorilla boots? Ouch!
Finally, Apes in Conquest of the POTA wearing human shoes?
Why am I even talking about this silliness? It's not even real. Apes just look good wearing human shoes and boots! :horror

As many items as possible have been recycled to be used in each of the gorillas.i.e. the outfits, boots, hands and hair. All the apes have the same basic cloth outfit. Crimson brown in colour. The sculpts, tunics, gauntlets, ammo pouches, backpack and mancatcher on the Captain and Soldier are all shared. The Captain and General both share the same rifle. General Ursus doesn't have a pole gripping hand, all the other hands are the same.
Each figure has something unique. Ursus has the different armour, helmet, face sculpt, pistol and holster. It's a disappointment to find Ursus's pistol cannot be held by the mighty General, and that his helmet still hasn't been done justice by a collectibles company. They could have easily made his helmets flap/fringe out of a pliable material or pleather, but instead it's an inflexible fully formed plastic. Then again, if it had ended up looking like the Sideshow version there would have been something to really complain about. A moulded leather would be the ideal. Something that strikes me is how conically shaped his gauntlets are. To me they look oversized and wrong, but I'm no expert.
The Captain has the painted vest, belt, pistol and holster, and the flag. Whilst the Soldier has the club, key, bandolier, and different rifle. Fortunately the relaxed hands on the soldier are able to hold the club and key.

After seeing these new Hot Toys - I'm really glad I didn't get any of them. For that much money, I'd expect so much more. The best thing, to me, are the silver plates mounted on the general’s vest. That part looks really good. Overall the body & clothes are very similar to Sideshow’s. Not worth the price difference between Hot Toys and Sideshows. The helmet and the real hair of this piece are also very disappointing to me. Okay I'm done now Hot Toys fans. Go ahead and bash me now. :o

I won't bash you, as i don't have them in hand to compare them. I don't see, from any of the pictures I have seen, that the Ht body resembles the Sideshow one. Going by past HT bodies that I do have they are much better bodies. As for the outfits? They look much better done and much more screen accurate than what Sideshow offered. Again, what SS gave us was great for its time and I am thankful for them. I am also thankful for the ApeJoe apes which were the only apes in town for their time. So far I think the Ursus hair looks the best of the three. And the helmet, despite it being molded, is still way more accurate than the pin head helmet SS gave. Overall the total attention to detail is leaning in HT's favor thus far. Hopefully this does not change once they are in hand.

Dr. Zaius gave it a wonderful report as well.

For that much money they could have done alot more too. Just get a silver felt marker pen and colour in the Sideshow blocks on his vest, shoulder armour, and gauntlets and you'll have the same thing. For some reason the shoulder armour sits better on the HT version, and don't flair outwards so much. The boots are comparable in quality. The Sideshow boots being slightly larger and the buckles more noticeable because they coloured them in with, perhaps, a silver marker. :lol I actually like them better. The cloth is the same just a different colour. Sideshows sculpt is black and the creases aren't as well defined. HT sculpt is brown, as is their helmet, with the glyphs being black. Sideshows is vice versa.

But angel, how many of Sideshow's apes have you modified? How many other folks' modifications have we seen?
Ironman - You're right. I have modified nearly all of my Sideshow figures. But it's not because I was unhappy with any of them. The only reason I modified any of the ape sculpts was to create some "new" characters, or to create a "greater variety" amongst my collection. In fact, the only real head modification I ever did was to open the ape mouths for a bit more variety. It turns out, in my opinion, that this is actually a better look for all of the apes.
If you think about it, I only did a few modifications to my Sideshow figures because I was unhappy with them.
I repainted Zira’s shoes the correct color –brown!
I darkened most of the gorilla bandoliers a much darker shade of brown.
Lastly, I made General Ursus a much better helmet. (I also slid his gun holster to the opposite side of his body, but that’s hardly a modification.) Those are the only changes I did to these POTA characters.
Oops! Jungle Jom also made a better blanket/poncho for slave Taylor. Thanks JJ!
I never modified any of the other Sideshow POTA figures. I don't think any changes were needed. I liked the rest of the SS figures right out of the box! I guess I’m just a big fan of the Sideshow Product. To me, I got more bang for my buck with Sideshow, even at $50 a SS figure.
Like I said in a post earlier today, I honestly hope that those who bought the new Hot Toys are "tickled pink" with them. Peace Ape Brothers! Peace. :peace

I didn't see a giant middle finger at all. As a matter of fact I was pleasantly surprise by HT giving the POTA a lower pricepoint.
I think hasbro had decent faces on their gorillas, even the rest were decent simian sculpts, just not all screen accurate. I think the hair, however, was terrible and hurt the line. One could look past the outfits at the price they were selling for but the hair should have either been done better or molded.
God, I hope I still like the HT's once I get them. :monkey3

I think you'll like them Ironman. They're a step up, I think, but only another step. They have their bad points but mainly because of the overlap and price point. Cheaper than other Hot Toys, which makes Sideshows shine, but still, the more bang for you buck has always been Sideshows forte, until recent years.
The angrier look is closer to the films and the hair gives it an appeal, for me anyways. The plus is, more apes, outfits and accessories to broaden your collection.
Don't have much time, so these pics will have to suffice.

I will have to say that I am just glad that Hot Toys has did these Planet of the Apes figures. I agree that they are a bit pricey, but it is encouraging because this may very well be the beginning of more acurate characters to the Apes line. I am looking forward to what they may come up with next! Maybe The Presidents of the Assembly, more mutants, a better Brent sculpt, Dodge, Landon, some crazy looking wild humans, Lucius, Armondo, ect. They could have just as well not made any at all! I believe that you should get what you pay for and that they (Hot Toys) should listen to the feedback of their buyers. I will still buy these, but lets get them as film accurate as we can because We deserve it for shelling out a premium price. I also believe that Hot Toys, Sideshow, and Hasbro Apes can compliment each other depending on how you use them. Angel, Opening the mouths of the SS apes was a masterfull idea and You literally made them look better that way! Kudos Brother!:banana

I've been debating on selling these 1/6 scale -Dr. Zaius glyphs which I bought from Matt Sotis last year. I paid $40 to Matt for these. I haven't used them. They're for the costume of Dr. Zaius (as seen in Beneath the Planet of the Apes).
Matt is no longer selling these as his mold went bad. According to Matt, the first few sets he made came out the best.
I have one of the very last casts he made from his mold. These aren't all that crisp or sharp if you ask me. I don't see myself using them unless I use them on a background ape. They are thin (which I like), but I prefer the finer details in his first pulling from the mold.
I also have the really THICK glyphes that ProtoZaius had originally bought from Matt. I now own these after a trade PZ and I made. I used the THICKER glyphes on my Dr. Zaius last night, because I really like details in them.
Please let me know if any of you might be interested in this extra set I have... if so, I can post pictures of them later tonight.

A mold could be made easily for the monkey feet Ironman. However, if you want shoes that actually slide onto (and over the existing human feet), it would be be best if you actually cut the original rubber ape shoes in half. Then molds would be made of the two halves. Of course, the new resin shoes would have to be glued back together and painted. Are you going to start making molds at some point? It's easy to do, but expensive and time consuming.

Dr. Milo #5 of 9
General Ursus #7 of 9
Chief Marcus #8 of 9
I'm assuming that #2 is going to be an astronaut. Since the likeness of Heston is now an issue, I'm thinking that it will be Dodge.
I'm also thinking that #4 might be Dr. Zaius since he is probably the most important ape in the story since he and an unnamed surgeon were the ones that went to work on poor Landon. Could the surgeon (with a new christened name) be one of the cards as well?
Also one of the books talked about in the Conspircy series concerns Taylor and his first run in with the mutants, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the later cards is Mendez or Ongaro.

Has any one found "decent" pics of these cards? Or the Omega poster yet?
The medicom transformation looks cool, but Curly looks like he just got caught in between the spikes of the cage and door. LOL
Very cool nonetheless!!
Thanks for sharing!!

Okay here is a Medicom Taylor Astronaut with beard, I cut off the heads & swapped them, with a McFarlane Movie maniacs poster(it looks MUCH better than the photos)... I always wished McFarlane would license the apes. And in his swan song as the Fatman -
Mr. Curly Howard....:banana:chew:banana:chew

ProtoZaius - I like your thinking concerning the Conspircy cards. That's why I asked you. I figured you had given it some thought also. Thanks for sharing. I agree with what you're saying. Let's see what unfolds...

I would agree with Dodge as #2. Although if this is Landon's story "after" the hunt I wouldn't have expected to see Dodge or Stewart. Maybe #4 and #6 will be Cornelius and Zira as they left with Milo. And #9 to be Dr. Zaius? Then again, if Chief Marcus is in there it could conceiveably open up the possibilities to anyone, even those only mentioned.

I would imagine that Lt. Stewart is shown on a card only because her mummified body will have to be removed from the Icarus by Dr. Milo and company as they purge the ship.
Maybe Landon will also tell the apes a story (concerning Dodge and Stewart) just before getting his lobotomy? Surely he'll talk about operating manuals and the location of the Icarus in the Forbidden Zone.
It'll be really neat reading about this conspiracy! How deep will it go? Who will it involve? It gets the wheels turning huh?

Good point on Stewart.
I always believed that Landon's reason for the lobotomy was the blow to his head. It will be interesting to see how they "re-write" things.

Also the story could start off before the launch of the Icarus. This would explain the Stewart card as well. Her card has an image of her both dead and alive. Furthermore, we could then see how and why each astronaut was picked for the mission. What made Landon the "Golden Boy of the Class of '72"? Perhaps we will get a peak behind his All-American image... before the building of that life sized bronze statue doomed to turn green.
Just a thought.

That might be a good page or two of background, but I certainly hope it doesn't play a big part. Its a Planet of the Apes book. I want stories that revolve around simian interaction. I want orangutans, chimpanzees and gorillas. GORILLAS. GORILLAS!!!
Maybe a bit of mutant thrown in there, but I think that a story could have been made centering around Milo's whole salvaging of the ship and subsequent repair and Escape. As far as I was always concerned, Landon was done after the 1st hunt.

I for one am looking forward to Landon's story. His attitude toward the apes will be quite different from Taylor's. Landon and Taylor never saw eye to eye on much. I also believe, unlike I-man, that the blow to Landon's head had nothing to do with the operation. I never trusted Zaius' story of the operation saving his life. After all, he said the beast could never speak.

Just off the current topic here! Has anyone ever noticed that everyone in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes wore sweaters including the Apes! The sweaters coincided with the jumpsuits! The Orangutans wore Yellow sweaters, The Chimps Green, The Gorillas Red! Has anyone here ever noticed this tidbit of information?

Hey JJ! Just watch the scenes closely! You can see the sweaters on the Apes that have the Jumpsuits opened at the top. Such as the Orangutan that is asked to get the book, Lisa the female Chimp, and a Gorilla that is holding the butt of a rifle over the Governor towards the end of the movie.

The turtlenecks can barely be seen. You really do have to look hard for them. I definitely remember Caesar wearing a green one. I seem to recall the female orangutan wearing one as well... never paid it much attention to any of the other apes because it's really hard to see under all of the ape hair.

True, but my point was more that his story would be post hunt, not pre launch. The blow to his head, resulted in his capture after hunt #1. If he spoke or escaped it would have been mentioned or alluded to during all the hub bub with Taylor. Zaius at the least would have been aware. I look forward to seeing how they pull it off, but I don't see much story for Landon other than what he sees through his cage and leading up to his lobotomy.

Obviously Landon was Lobotomised, but what if He had some drug in his system that did not allow him to focus or be aware of his surroundings. That would have been cool if they Had him come around later and He was cognitive and aware! Just a thought!

:blah:blah:blah They'll pull it off. I'm not in agreement with you I man. (So what else is new?) Dr. Zaius is not entirely truthful in my eyes. As far as you not seeing much story for Landon (other than what he sees through his cage) leading up to his lobotomy...
Well, lets just say if you're right that would be very disappointing book. That would certainly make for a really "suckie" read! It would be so boring that way. That would definitely blow!

Wow, YOU don't agree with me? Thats such a surprise.:horror
I agree that Zaius is less than forthcoming with all of his knowledge. However, in that talk he had with Taylor in his office, he would have indicated something about interrogating his companion. I think the Zaius aspect might be smaller than we think in this new story. Maybe Marcus is there because Landon also escaped and he had to hunt him down again?
Or.... yes Landon was operated on, but was it an actual, successful lobotomy? Does Landon's story take place after his being singled out by Taylor?

Okay all, here are some side by side pics of Hot Toys Ursus and Sideshows Ursus. At one time, I hailed Sideshows Planet of the Apes as the best I had ever seen. And they were. But now, with the Hot Toys release, IMO HT kicked Sidshows version to the curb. I used Sideshow Ursus that has the corrected fix flap done by our own Angel!

If you recall...
In the talk he had with Taylor in his office, Zaius did indicate something about Landon... I paraphrase:
Zaius: And there's the one you call Landon...
Taylor: Then you admit...
Zaius: I admit that, where there is one mutant, there is another and another a whole nest of them. Where is your nest Taylor?
And no... I believe Landon's story will be coming to an end by the time he is singled out by Taylor. He may be fine in the story until that point and the lobotomy may be the big reveal at the end of his story. After all, you can't really have your central character walking around in a daze drooling.
