I just bought five square feet of workable goat skin leather hyde from Feebay. Supposedly it's thin enough to handsew or use a regular sewing machine with. It's coming from Italy so I should see it in 10 days. I want to recreate the green jacket and use real leather for the collar. I can't wait to get the leather in hand so I can smell it. I just love the scent of leather. It smells sooooooo goooooood.......almost as good as foam latex....but a little different.

Angel I can't wait to see your orangutans fluff up that tribunal table!!! I have been thinking about the hieroglyphs, too. You will have to show me your notes on El Presidente's hieroglyphs...I'll see if I can dig out mine. I'll photograph it and you can review it...and you tell me if I'm off. I don't think that lasercut leather is the way to go for the hieroglyphs because it would be too flat. I need to feel and see the shadows of imprinted leather. I'm going to look for the leather working tool and I'll just hammer mine out.

You mean the ones from Hot Toys? I hope they crank out some chimps!!! If not, I'll make them.

PZ, when you see Matt Falls, tell him I really love his sculpt of Zira. After a repaint, she is so spectacular. She was already beautiful to begin with, but she's really spectacular now.

Look at Zira's official photograph from Sideshow. Isn't she purty? Notice also that they sewed on her hieroglyph correctly. Does anybody own a Sideshow Zira that has the hieroglyphs reading correctly? Also, she doesn't have that "lipstick" in this photo nor does she look like she has the dreaded doll dots. Next to Sideshow's photo is my old Zira, before the makeover. I love how she is looking directly at the camera. It's 1AM and I'm not sleepy at all. It's going to be a rough night.

Jess, Great job on that Zira! I am way behind on my head paints. I have too many bodies sitting, waiting for their heads to return and even more waiting on other components. <sigh>
Thats why I started trying to do more on my own, but even that seems to have been met with difficulty as I found myself still depending on other's input before I could finalize them.
I have been working on a non-ape, "V" related project and finding out that Krylon Fusion is not my friend. I will post pix if I can get my son's camera to focus properly.
My human head paints are leaving me more angered than pleased. Maybe I'll take a stride towards Angel's lead and try a few simian repaints. Maybe the colors and textures won't be as hard on me as the humans are. I also still need to finish my mutants and try rehairing the Hasbro apes.
Well, off to a funeral now. I'll try and check back later.
I've been gone too long from this thread that will not die.

Hey, IM! You should definitely pop in more often. And yes, it could be frustrating to wait and wait for others to get their act together to finish your project that you've been waiting on. I can see that, but you just have to concentrate your restless energy on something else. If one thing is not working and is frustrating, start on another. There's always lots of projects to do.

Today I'm going to see Land of the Lost because my boys really want to see that. We want to watch it at the theater before they move it to DVD.

Jessica

I also went to the used clothing store. Could not find the right material for Snickertown, so I ended up taking the boys with me to the fabric store before they closed for the evening. They have a buy one yard get one yard free offer. So i bought a yard for Snickertown's blanket, which was about $4, and got another yard for free. $2 per yard. Can't beat that!

Today's crafting will be about:

Snickertown's Taylor blanket
Mego scale dark blue denim jeans
Painting those Mego scale heads and getting them done!!! (I have four of them)....

While I am crafting I will think about:

getting back to sculpting

Shrinking a Bruce Lee head to Mego Scale. Someone gifted me with one, so I purchased a $7 bottle of acetone. I'm going to give the vinyl head an acetone bath and see how much it shrinks. They said I could do whatever i wanted with the Bruce Lee head.

SDCC 2010

My boys' deluxe pullover masks and baking my own foam latex. This is a mongo project.

Jess, I'm a long time Land of the Lost fan. Take my advice and save some money.

OK. Got back from Land of the Lost. I am not a fan of Land of the Lost, but I had a spectacular time. I do remember watching it as a child in the 70s. It was a Saturday-morning kind of thing that I used to look forward to. I guess I did not expect much out of the movie...didn't really want to watch it but I did take the kids and really enjoyed it. So yeah...I'm out $50, but I had a good time. If you go with the mindset of expecting to be disappointed, then most movies (except for the frickin' reimagination!) are ok.

Next week we're going to watch "Up"

The Sideshow website never updated their photos to show off the production line versions... just the one-of-a-kind prototypes. Looks like they got the glyph right for the proto.

And you are right... I saw that Zira displayed at SDCC in 2004 (along with the rest of the protos) and she was quite "purty".

And the Zaius proto was stunning as well. The following year (at SDCC '05) I got to actually hold the Zaius proto in my very paws... it looked SO much better than the production version I had at home. The thought of making a break for it with the proto in my hand DID cross my mind but I knew I wouldn't get very far. :banghead:banghead:banghead

Here's hoping that they get the PF Zaius correct!! Sideshow probably didn't want to spend the money to hire the photographer...and probably most people would complain about the production line versions if Sideshow bothered to photograph them and post them up.

We are undergoing some kind of heatwave. About time, I say. Last night the house was 83. I loved it. I guess because I have been cranking up the car to 80 since it's been so cold.

Here's Snick's blanket. For the grunge, I tried black pastels, but they kept rubbing off, and then I remembered the flat brown spray paint I used for my son's plastic rifle. The blanket looks pretty darn grungy now.

Stickman is still busy.

I have not heard from Enaud in a long time. He said he got into canoeing, and with spring/summer here, I'm sure he's having a great time wherever he is. He hasn't surfaced on the Mego Museum in a long time, too.

I want to spend lots of my $$ and time on those really cheap naked figures because I want to convert them into apes. I want to get back into sculpting again, but I have to finish my repaints first, and also Snick's clothing. So much to do, so little time! Last night was a tough night for me. I was not able to sleep and it was already 2:30 AM. I think it's because I can't stop my mind from thinking about the projects I want to do...and so I toss and turn and have a really hard time getting up.

Congrats on your Mego Cornelius and Gorilla. Aren't they freaking tiny? Imagine trying to repaint that. I'm struggling with Bruce Lee and the other Megos I am painting. Bruce Lee was too pink/light, so I had to put some color on him. He looks like he fell asleep in the sun, because now he's too dark. He's fixable though. I just need to walk away from him and come back to see him with fresh eyes. Even though I've probably spent tons of time on him I just can't send him out not perfect. I also gave him eyelid surgery because his left eye (the one to the right of the photo) is so different from the left eye...you just can't conceal a bad sculpt with paint. I've tried and it's not working. I really want to put together a Mego scale stadium with all of my customized apes there. It's going to take me years to complete, but it's time well spent because practice makes better.

Here's Bruce and my Zira together, so you can see the scale difference:

Apethoven has been very helpful with piano lessons! I took a photo of him in action yesterday, but I didn't have time to upload. I'll post photos of him tonight. The wagon really is a thing of beauty. It may be a little dark but it doesn't really bother me. I had forgotten the level of detail you gave it. I wish it was part of my collection. It would be the centerpiece of any SS ape collector.

The question is... How does it look when he is wearing it? Just curious...

I am sooo excited!! Apemania has just been commissioned to bake foam latex appliances for Dylan and Ashton. If they can get me the baked foam latex gorilla prosthetics by Sept. 15, that should give me enough time to recreate deluxe pullover hoods that I will also hair up. Also, I need to sew Dylan's standard issue gorilla outfit, bandoliers, and probably a pair of fake wooden clubs. Probably no rifle, since school will not allow that for Halloween. I may have to take the day off if I decide to go under the goo. That will depend if I have a cold or not...

I found something a bit interesting. There is a web site that logs all of the possible celebrity likenesses that companies like Dragon, 21st Century and Blue Box Toys have tried to slide past "the license police" in their military lines. Well, here's what I found on page seven:

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/5002/luftwaffeitpt.jpghttp://img518.imageshack.us/img518/4487/luftwaffeitptmcdowall.jpg

The picture on the left is that of the Luftwaffe Squadron Leader from In The Past Toys. It sure bears more than a passing resemblance to the great ape himself Roddy McDowall. Gee... I'm half tempted to try and find this figure.

Here's the web address of the site:

The ITPT bodies are horrible, but they did do a few very nice celebrity headsculpts. The Luftwaffe Leader looks a lot like Roddy. I have him in a turtleneck and pants waiting for a sport jacket so I can have him as he was when he hosted the POTA special. There are recasts to be had of it on the bay but it sometimes can be found in its original form and, IMHO, thats the one to get.

PZ and Ironman...you guys are on a roll today. You've really made me smile.

Guess what guys? I made a fabric run today and bought chimp green in duck cloth. I bought all they had, 4 yards of it, to the tune of $10/yard. Also, I didn't realize the chimp inner sleeves are worth their weight in gold. I bought a yard (it was not on sale...grrr..but I was rushing and didn't see that it was full price, so double grrrr...) and it cost me $45 for one effing yard.

I have a theory about the whole "Cornelius-Zira-Milo" dynamic that I believe covers the affection between Zira and Milo,Cornelius' apparent acceptance of it,AND allows him to retain his testicles. We know Zira has siblings;Lucius is incontestable proof. I submit that the Milo is Lucius father, and Zira's brother.Let the mayhem begin...PS

Couldn't agree with you more, Angel. I am also not a fan of the hair and myself prefer the Sideshow gorillas which will always hold a special place in my heart. But it looks like Hot Toys did listen to fans and did add the widow's peak, so the gorilla does not have a flat hairline on top.

Can't really tell from the photo though if they improved the teeth...\

I think the hair could use a little trim though. It's a bit long for me.

Ooof--that's a gut puncher of a statement...That's one of the things I don't really like about the Hot Toys apes. Everything else is fantastic, but the hair can go.

When I get the gorillas and you see me post them with French braids, and even pig-tails like Dorothy from Wizard of Oz, then you'll admit that Hot Toys shouldn't have given the gorillas real hair that little girls will braid.

Been lying around the home the last 2 days, I’m sick once again. I plugged in the Planet of the Apes TV series, grabbed a blanket and a pillow and watched “Escape from Tomorrow” and “The Good Seeds”. I never gave it any real thought (until today) but Bobby Porter, also played the part of Remus (the young farm chimp) in “The Good Seeds”. It just clicked today for some reason with me. I knew that he had played the part of young Cornelius in Battle for the Planet of the Apes and the young chimp, Arno in “Escape from Tomorrow.”

Jessica did you ever finish your Anakin Skywalker chimp?

Jessica
07-11-2009, 11:36 AM
No. The Anakin Skywalker chimp has been sculpted and fired, but not painted.

Here he is:
http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn102/apecityoutfitters/IMG_5540.jpg

Not sure if I like him or not. Do you think I should re-do his nose and muzzle? Is his muzzle too big? I think it's too big and needs to be re-done. And I need to fill in those lines of his brows...they are way too deep and it looks horrible when painted. That's what happened with Carsia....I had to really fill in the lines I sculpted on with more clay or Apoxie to smooth her out more. When I sent you Carsia's cast, I filled it in for you.

You were half right in you previous comment. Quality. Quality. Quality. Thats what Hot Toys is known for nowadays. And at $105 these look to be a bargain in today's market.
Sideshow's were great back in the day when they were the only ape in town. These are much more screen accurate. I will admit that I always did like Sideshow's color choice for the soldiers. The black & brown looks, to me, more military.
But, back to the topic. C'mon, you dont think you could tame that hair and make a kickass gorilla?

Save your energy and focus on the real battle...let's bring some more apes onto this planet. Now that Hot Toys is on the verge of mailing out these apes in a few months, we need to rally the troops and get some more churned out. They have not yet breathed their magic on the chimps and the orangutans. When Hot Toys does, I will kowtow to them a thousand times.

The dark olive green is the fabric that is an interweave lock. That's the green I used for my chimp jacket. It's more an Escape color than the original Planet color. The lighter olive green underneath everything is the new fabric I found. If you are going to re-do the Prefect, I suggest you re-do his entire outfit including pants. Zira's green jacket is totally not the right color (I'm going to re-do that someday), and I've included that in the photo as well for reference.

Wow, Angel. Your Burke looks just like him! I better hustle and give back Ironman his Burke so he can finish him off. I also have a lot of painting to finish up, but I'm leaving in a half hour to get fitted into a size 8 dress. I always wear a size 4 but size 8 was the smallest one they could find for me. Somebody (not me!) is going to have to re-sew that outfit...

I was going to make the Prefect collar myself. I know can handle that. I know that I couldn't do the entire outfit. I think what I might do is cut up an extra Cornelius shirt from Sideshow and make the collar using that. That way the color will match. I'm just wondering if there will be enough material.

I know it is a long shot but I remeber hearing on a interview or reading somewhere that the TV series was a big hit outside the United States. So hopefully the Ape artist in the HT world is an Apes TV series fan. They did make the TV gorilla.

You know, I don't think Burt would have been a good Brent. I think James Franciscus was an awesome counterpart to Hestons Taylor.

Did you guys know that James Franciscus rewrote much of that script? According to the book I have, Franciscus went from changing a few lines of Brent to rewriting the entire part. He spent many a nights rewriting this and upset a number of people. Franciscus said something like the part of Brent was written all wrong. It had originally portrayed Brent as a guy with absolutely no *****. I do remember James Franciscus also saying, it's no wonder the part didn't appeal to Burt Reynolds.

I think the interest in Burt was prior to them getting Heston back. Heston only agreed to the sequel if they killed off Taylor and they were probably looking for a "big name" to draw in audiences.
I, for one, would like a good Reynolds sculpt to just see the possibilities.

An ape has gotten through to a top dog at Hot Toys who is willing to listen. We have a week to get our act together. I am compiling a list, and I'm going to see which of those figures on the list would realistically sell. We'll submit a whole list, but from there select some figures that would be successful marketing-wise for Hot Toys. The only way to secure future apes is to give them what will sell. And I'm all for making more figures for my beloved Planet of the Apes.

I think my SS commercial came out very well, hopefully it'll make 2nd or third this year as I did not see it. A lot of those videos didn't stick to the theme but hey, as long as everyone had fun doing it, I think that's all that matters, Lets see. Hopefully it'll be somewhere in the top three and I'd love to hear some feedback. If it gets shown later this month, I think you'll recognize it right away. :)

Sorry no Apes this year but it is as equally good in my opinion. I'll let you judge.

Jess, that photo is very cool. It looks professional. If you want I can blur your last name a little if that would comfort you so you could post it with no fears.

In the meantime I had Dr. Z beamed aboard my Mego (DidaDisplay) Enterprise. My two year old niece really loves these things and knows everyones name, even the Aliens. Mugato is her favorite figure but all the others are close behind.

PZ there is a new apes novel coming out next year, which will have a limited print run. Issues are being given out at SDCC with replicas of Landon's dog tags. Watch out for that when you go, and maybe you can snag one. And if you do, can I borrow the book?

It there any chance that you can give me some more info on this? That SDCC is MASSIVE and it's easy to miss something offered at one of the booths. DO you know the booth number this is offered at? What vendor is it under?

I was surfing around iTunes the other day and I found something interesting. I apologize if everybody else knows this but me, but I did a search for Planet of the Apes and found an interesting item under the Podcast section. A theater troupe called Broken Sea does a radio play type show of the first Ape film. It has 14 episodes and runs for hours with tons of extra scenes included in the broadcast. I guess this would be considered POTA expanded universe. It also tries to incorporate elements of the book as well.

I must admit, it's hard to hear other actors play the parts and the script is obviously not as tight as the original but the whole presentation is interesting. It also uses the original score.

And the best things is... it's ALL FREE.

Hey, PZ. I have heard maybe about 10 minutes of that...but had to stop listening because my husband walked into the room and he said, "WHAT are you listening to?" And I said oh, nothing...and I haven't had a chance to get back to it again.

Hi Stickman! Long time, no here brother man! We definately share the same passion for collectibles. I love the Civil War figures dressed in Battle gears items. Auggie has come a long way. I forgot, are you in Washington state? My sister is making plans to move to Seattle.

I am KFOG. Right here in Great ol Seattle. The summer here has been very beautiful except for the past two days, but we really needed the rain.

Great to hear from you Dr. Z, hopefully I will have more time to visit one of my favorite threads. How's that Beneath Jail Dio holding up?

JJ- I did SS' commercial contest which took two months and am now working on a GI JOE skit for a friend that is currently working with HASBRO and is in charge of the GI JOE FILM FEST and has asked me to make a quick opener for him which is a little behind schedule but I've been told the Fest has been pushed to October or until Hasbro gets things sorted out.

I'm a big American Civil War fan and am reaching out to Battle Gear Toys to hopefully do some work for them one day as they make truly remarkable items. I love SS but their prices just don't jive with the quality anymore. I recently canceled my Crimson Cobra Commander and Toht w/Ark just to name a few. SS did a great job with Darth Vader but the prices are getting too steep. I truly still feel that SS makes some of the best headsculpts in the business and admire them for that. The HT Apes look phenomenal and URSUS is beyond words, but outside of the Ape line I think that's it for me. I'm really tired of movie licensed items and would really like to see more unique and original ideas like the SS of old used to pump out.

Yes Jessica, I still have sleepless nights. Just last night I was up at 3AM and luckily had Winston Groom's (Wrote Forrest Gump) book Vicksburg 1863 to help pass the next couple of hours.

KFOG you're right I always enjoyed seeing your CW figures. Too bad you sold your collection. You're right about Auggie, he has some amazing items and they're only getting better. I promised to keep my lips sealed but he has amazing things coming later this year.

PZ, lol sorry that you didn't like that DR. Z was beamed to the bridge. That shot is actually my screen saver. Everyone that sees it laughs and says, "That's a funny shot."

I can't wait to break out my wagon again and take more Ape shots, that will surely happen when the HT apes arrive.

Well I'm getting the Dr.Z PF Ex for $85. due to my gift card from last year. I really wonder how he is going to turn out. I really don't have room for him but he's Ape related so I have to keep him. I almost wish he had a real main like the HT line. Does anyone here own any PF's? I think this will be the one and only PF I own. Just can't get into things that stay static. Well, actually I could really go for an Bloody Lawgiver Ex. PZ are you listening? :)

IM - "V" would be great, and I bet it's already on HT's plate. I think they're going to be hitting a lot of Sci-Fi classics in the next twelve months. Knowing me though I'd have them visit POTA for a real wake up call. Not only would they have to compete with the Mutants, but imagine what those Apes would do if they saw a human pull back it's head to reveal a cold blooded reptilian being. :horror - que Peter Gabriel's - "Shock the Monkey!"

Well the only old timer I haven't caught up with is the Great Angel of Music, I can't wait to see what that clever gorilla has been up to. I sure miss seeing his awesome creations.

Have a good night all!

Sticks/Dr. Z, last night I went to bed at 10 because the night before I stayed up watching TV until 1 AM. Anyway, I woke up at 4 AM this morning. So I got up and handwashed 3 of my wool sweaters. I figured that I may as well take advantage of the hot week we are having. Then I went back to bed...and probably fell asleep and could hardly wake up again.

Hot huh! We reached a tieing record of 115 Saturday and close to a record of 113 on Sunday. Oh, how I love the Valley of the Sun in the Phoenix area! I remember working as a Mesa Community College DPS officer working out in a record 122 degree heat (a record). That was June of 1990! It had reached 129 degrees up in Lake Havasu that same day.:horror:maul:balrog

Hello Stickman! My sister has put in for a transfer to a CostCo up there, so I may be visiting sometime. I also have a friend in Arlington.

I also still have many of my Civil War era, Cavalry 1870's and 1880's, some Alamo Santa Anna soldiers (1835-36 period). I will be selling some on ebay soon.:monkey1

Yes, Sticks... when that guy finally starts liquidating you'll be the first to know.

I've been up of the last few nights as well. The theater I'm working at has had a couple of midnight shows recently and I've been going to bed around 3 in the morning. Last night I ran a midnight show of Harry Potter for the employees and tonight I are showing it to the customers... and it runs over 2 and a half hours. :horror:horror:horror

Hey Guys and Girl...

I finally found a shot from the Super-8 POTA film I did back in High school. That's Alan on the left and Pete on the right and in the center... Old Jungle Jom as Galen. Just like Jess, I too know what it is like to go under the Goo....

It's funny to think I kept that 8x10 since 1975. Gosh I'm old......

Here is a one to one sculpture I did in clay. Eventually I made a mold and made a over the head mask of it using expanding foam rubber. Punching the hair into the rubber took many many months.

You'll never guess the one and only time I wore it. If you can guess I will reveal the finished photo.

Who is going to start guessing?

How long ago was this? Is it around the same time as your Galen photo? If it was then I'd say the opening of the King Kong remake in 1976. :D

The gorilla mask was made in 1981/1982. I was trying to create a portfolio in order to break into special effects make-up, or anything having to do with film.

I got as far as breaking into television and that is where I remain; semi employed at the present time.

No Proto, Not to the King Kong remake... take another guess where I wore this piece. I'm dying to post the final reveal!

Jungle Jom- Your mask looks wonderful! You are very gifted and I truly wish I could see more of your creations!

I can’t even begin to guess where you wore that mask. My guesses are ridiculous, but here goes...

How about the local zoo or perhaps to a job interview? How about the premiere of the movie Project X? How about a produce area at a supermarket?

Jessica

OK Jungle. I'm going to guess now. I was going to say Halloween, but I think you must have worn it to an open casting session, where you were applying to work in special effects, or it was a final exam for a special effects class.

Angel and Jess... So far none of your guesses are even close. The occasions you mentioned are all way too high profile.

They were all great guesses. Sooooooo... I'll let this go on a little longer before some clues will be given.

This is turning out to be fun!

High school graduation, of course!

Just saw your post Kfog. You're wrong too, but much more on the right track than Angel and Jess.

However I graduated High School in 1975 and the gorilla mask was made in 1981/1982.

Like I said you're on the right track!
