Anybody see this photo before? I remember in the movie that it was transposed...Zira stands on the other side of the screen. Could it be a screenshot that was transposed? I have never seen this shot though, and I don't remember seeing this part of Ape City when the movie is rolling.

Transposed as I can see. Look at the Bandoliers and clubs hanging on the right side, instead of the left.:monkey1

Cool photo and good eye.
JESS - Luv the LG. I own a 1:1 LG head if you need a photo of it.
Here are some shots of Zaius. Tonight I'm going to work on getting some better boot glyphs made.
I've also included a shot of Brent's dogtags.

Snick---those look GREAT!! Why do you need better boot glyphs?
On your LG 1:1 head--does it have shoulders? I would like to know how the back of the LG looks--I have seen SS photos of their LG but my main photo source, Apemania, does not show his back.
Oh...we got a new fridge! :banana It's an LG!!!! How appropriate for me!!! :banana :banana :banana

JESS - The LG head doesn't have shoulders and the back is felt.
ANG - JESS - It looks like the boot glyphs should be skinnier and maybe longer. I looked at the Mego figure and they seem to match up with the photos I've seen. I didn't think to look at the Mego figure until last night. It shouldn't be too hard to get done. I can always pop out some resin versions for the crew.
ANG - The dogtags are from KFOG.

Does Sideshow even bother to read through this megathread? The thought just occurred to me of why there is such a gorilla shortage--you can't just buy ONE. You have to buy 10 or 20 or 40 to make sure you have enough for your army. So, if you are listening, Sideshow, please show us some ape love and make more gorillas...new sculpts...individual faces...just what you would see in a real army.

I am curious now. How does the Hasbro naked body compare to a Sideshow naked body? Can somebody post photos? I love how the Sideshow figures have a great degree of articulation although I wish the joints were a bit tighter so your figures could hold poses better without swooning over or without the aid of a stand.
I am rambling because I am bored. I have not worked on anything POTA-related for the last two days. I am almost done with sewing a set of PJs for my 9 year old, though...that's what I did last night.
I keep checking my LG to see if there is any new cracking but I see none. The air dry clay says it sets in 24 hours, but I don't think that's true. The Crayola Air Dry Clay I first started with was beautifully smooth--and then one week later, there was a small crack. I'm giving him a whole week to finish cracking so I can start the repairs with Apoxie which have not been delivered yet...hopefully with Apoxie in hand he will be done in another week or so.

The Hasbro body is just awful. Less said about them the better.
1) It's too tall to be in proper scale (the Sideshow Apes are on a shorter body than the Sideshow Taylors)
2) The arms are too short in be in scale with the rest of the body.
3) The arms and chest are way too buff for an Ape. The body was designed to be used for their GI Joe Hall of Fame series.
When the Hasbro Apes were the only 12" Apes, I bought better bodies for them and swapped heads. Then I had to take in the costumes since they were tailored for the bulkier body.

PZ, I was always curious about the apes vs. humans on SS bodies...so if I were to make a Burke/Virdon costume, would I be able to use Cornelius as a stand-in human, since I do not have any humans in my possession?

:lol :rotfl :lol
I would say that Mego was in the ballpark... the sculpt is way too soft to be that accurate. However its the dimensions of the Mego boot glyphs that are more accurate than the ones offered in the Armageddon Glyph set.
So PZ, are you working on two Armageddon Zaius outfits?
No. Just one. Though for some reason, I haven't been able to apply the final glyphs to the costume. I've been weighing my options. But I do want to get the figure completed so I can take pictures of him for SDCC. :D

Perhaps... I don't know if their is going to be a length issue. I would send you a Sideshow Male body but I gave my last spare one to my Dad who was kitbashing a Daniel Craig Bond as a gift.
Plus...Hasslein said he had about 40 Hasbro gorillas!!!
I too bought an insane amount of Apes during Target clearance sale. Now I only have a set of the first three MIB... over the years I've given several to my son who needed some sturdy Ape toys to play with and the rest I gave to Toy For Tots during the holidays. :D

At Toy Anxiety, they have a Sideshow Darth Maul figure--it is on a black body. Is this the same body that they used for the apes--where it is a tad smaller than the humans?
I only tweaked my LG a little last night. I angled his head forward a bit more so he is looking straight ahead instead of a little up now and filled in the major cracks. I am SOOOO glad it's Friday. I will work on him a lot this weekend. I practiced the pleating/folds of his garment. It's so easy with Apoxie but so difficult with clay. Strange.
I just placed another order from Toy Anxiety...a loose caucasian male for $9.99, black pants and turtleneck for $6.00 (For Armando)!!! Wasn't that a good deal? Oh...and that will solve my sizing dillema for the Burke/Virdon costumes.

I have that Maul and yes, he is the same size as the Apes.
As for my 8 year old son Alex, he does own the Sideshow Zaius, Cornelius, Zira, Ursus, Slave Taylor and Nova for himself... and he keeps them VERY nice posed on his shelf, just like dear old dad.
However he has a whole set of Hasbro Apes that he "monkeys" around with... for the HARDCORE play action. :D

Want to work a little on my LG now. I noticed that he had a dowager's hump on his back so I broke the clay off last night and this morning my son asked how come his back exploded. I said that I did that on purpose because it wasn't shaped the way I wanted it to be.

Hi Duane! Time to come out of lurking!!
I just finished some very easy sewing projects: PJ bottoms, 1 pair of shorts, and a pillow case! I want to make a top to match the shorts for my toddler, but I need to get ready to go to the movies.

Caspy is just great, I really love that!
And as always... Your greatest achievement... The Wagon! I still am waiting to see it in all it's painted glory!
I sewed the first of many leather strips into the Nova costume yesterday. I didn't have much time. I spent the better part of the day trying to fix my problems with the bank. They still have some of my funds messed up and it's been months working over the same problems. At this point I will settle for nothing less than the dismissal of the employee who screwed up things when I deposited a good deal of money many many months ago. It was supposed to go into a tax deferred account but ended up in a non-tax sheltered account. It seems they don't know how to rectify the situation. I can't tell you how much free time has been waisted with these clowns!
Regardless... The outfit is nearly done. I just hope next Saturday isn't waisted like this one was!

ANG - The pix look incredible! Your Milo and opened mouthed chimp look amazing. Sorry to hear that Sticks and my wagons were at the center of the mayhem regarding the sander. :(
JESS - I'm not sure if I'm going to move forward with a 1:6 scale space ship. I have the room for it but it would be so BIG! Around 36" long and 24" wide and 12" high. It would either be made out of wood or that godawful clay that the glyphs were made from. If we used clay the ship would have to be molded and cast which would cost a fortune. If I can find a cheap and easy way to do it I'll move ahead with it.

Hey Snick! Why not just make the front part of the ship, the cabin, and the sleeping quarters. One at a time of course.

Now what about the fat man? (Victor Buono)
The Snick backpack really looks perfect. Just like the one in "Beneath".

Angel--that backpack of Snick's is the one I was remembering!! It is soooooo perfect. I'm sure you could make one just like it. My camera also sucks at taking photos with a flash--I only take photos during the day. Everytime I use the flash I hate the gloss of the faces or the colors come out garish. I forgot about the fatman. What happened to that guy? I remembered from early on that you were working on him and it looked great from what I remember...
Ironman is the movie we are watching next week. Today we watched Forbidden Kingdom. I really love Hong Kong epics especially if they have martial arts (I'm a sucker for Samurai movies, too), and I watched it only because it was the same martial arts choreographer for Crouching Tiger.
Snick, there must be something you could make the spaceship with. It's just the curves of it that make it so difficult to reconstruct. It would be gigantic, anyway, and casting it would be impossibly expensive.

SNICK - There was a special on TV recently, and the demonstrated how they made the molds for the dinosaur bones before casting them. I think we could use the technique and that would make the project much cheap...
I'll tell you about it sometime, maybe out next phone conversation.

Snick, I am thinking your 1/6 scale ship would have to be taller than 12 inches high because the astronauts need to be able to stand straight inside. It needs to be a bit taller than that and everything needs to be just a little bit bigger than what you listed.
I can't take my mind off of that backpack, Snick. Please keep me in mind when you get around to casting them. Let me know what I can do in return.

JESS - I'm headed to Joanne's after work. Are you thinking the ship should be made out of foamcore? That would be an Interesting idea.
JESS - Good point. The ship would have to be bigger than 12." The inspiration for the ship idea is this attached photo.
ANG - The dinosaur people seem to be able to make a cast real easy.
ANG is right we need to make a 1:1 ship. I wonder if I can get my sculptor to make it for under $300? :lol
Jessica
05-05-2008, 11:17 AM
Snick, I have seen somebody make ships out of foamcore. The rounded areas of the ship will be difficult to do but not impossible. The person bevels the cuts where the seams are. I was thinking of the craft foam that easily bends.
Wow that photo is crazy cool. I want to make one now...but only Mego scale because it's smaller.
I worked on the right hand of the LG. Very difficult with Apoxie because I was not using armature so the Apoxie refused to retain its shape. After about five or six tries, just as the Apoxie was about to cure and was almost impossible to shape I was able to make this:
http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn102/apecityoutfitters/LG002.jpg

Snick, I don't remember much from when I used to make model airplanes, but there is this very thin material called carbon fiber that you could use to strengthen whatever you will decide to use for your Icarus. I don't remember if it comes in sheets. I have already used fiberglass cloth too but I remember that it was quite a messy undertaking. Perhaps now they have improved with whatever it is you use to adhere it to your projects.
If you can spare that backpack, Snick, I would love to have it. Let me know what I can do in return. It's definitely the one I remembered seeing from when I started reading the posts starting from page one....

I forgot to say that I took a saw to my LG's left hand this morning, the one resting on the table. I noticed that the sleeve was in a wrong angle to begin with, and the hand was also not angled properly---I sawed off the bottom part of the sleeve just above the hand, and then I broke off the hand in chunks. I left a mess for me to vacuum later tonight when I get home. I will try to rework the left hand tonight.

Today, I removed the clay from each of them and poured the other halves of the rubber molds for both Armando and the Ursus Helmet. Tomorrow, they'll be dry and I'll start pouring the resin. I want to mail the UNPAINTED heads out on Saturday.
Just wanted you guys to know you'll be getting your unpainted heads soon very soon. (Those of you who wanted painted heads you'll be waiting longer...)

I just missed a big screen showing of Planet of the Apes at the Castro in San Francisco, just thirty bloody minutes away from me....and if I had taken off straight from work it would have been 20 minutes. I have not seen it shown in over 15 years at a big screen theater. I didn't even realize it until somebody posted it on the POTA Yahoo group just now. Why? Oh WHY???????? Cheer up Jess. Just think of HD/Blue-Ray up-coming releases. Classic films are always best enjoyed at home, with a good home theater. To hell with the audience experience.
You need a big screen theater for new releases, and you need that shared experience, of an audience, to create a new classic.

Is the classic Planet of the Apes Saga slanted to the Blu-ray treatment soon? I haven't heard any details.
I'm not sure how good the print was for the San Francisco screening, but the last time I saw the original film on the big screen (over ten years ago) the print was quite bad. Still it was fun seeing on the big screen again. :D

ANG - Fantastic! Thank you!!!!! That helmet is going towards an Ironman inspired Urko figure I've been putting together for a couple years.
ALL - No worries on apes vs. human 1:6 heads. I really need a Burke to finish off my tv show motif.

Every couple of years the original film will show up here in NYC. Decent prints.
But...
The last time I saw it I was kind of surprised to find the theater pretty packed on a Saturday afternoon.
"Wow, look at all the POTA fans" I thought.
So the movie starts, and Heston starts his opening monologue and I notice laughs through out the theater that lasted almost the whole movie.
It seemed that the majority of the people there were there to just laugh at the movie, a la Mystery Science Theater!
I was so pissed off!
Between that and cell phones and babies crying and people talking in general, it's almost not worth going to the movies at all anymore.

I got back into town late Tuesday night. I saved sending my SideShow film till I returned because I wanted to show a few people and get feedback. Happily everyone loved it. I had one minor tweak to make and shipped it out yesterday. :banana

There's always the bunch of stupid humans that you want to grab by the throat and put a gag on...I know. Those are the ones that need to be tagged for target practice so I can shoot them. But it is rather cool and rare to see it on the big screen. It's been more than 15 years for me since I saw it last at the Paramount in Oakland.

Hello Jess,
I noticed your ANSA mego size suits a while back. GREAT job. I wonder if Diamond select will be making any of these. I think they did a great job on their upcoming Star Trek TOS Sulu figure. There has also been rumors of them redesigning their Gorn figure to be more screen accurate then the original release. I think Diamond Select is a great up and coming company. I bought a Star Trek Prop phaser, and communicator, and both are excellent. The Communicator rocks, and has some weight to it, not just a flimsy piece of plastic. I can't wait for them to release the Tricorder!

I received my FZ Dr. Z from SideShow while I was away. I am so happy that someone posted a while back that he was still available. Did anyone else put an order in? If not, I strongly recommend you do. Jess are you listening? With only 500 made, he is sure to be heavily sought after by future collectors. I love the gloves and boots on this figure.

Thank you so much Jess, it feels good to be back. It was a little tough being back east at my parents, they have a very slow computer which made reading this thread with all these posts nearly impossible. :lol
Dr. Z is reported to be sold out, and I am not sure how K-Fog tried to order, you must put him on your wait list. Within a week he should be converted over to processing now. You might want to still give it a shot, You'll have nothing to lose. I can't wait to see some more of your outfits. Will you be doing strickly POTA? If you ever trickle over to Star Trek TOS, I think my Klingons could use a new Silver/Black outfit. :D

A fat Scotty huh? That should be interesting. I've already have five scotty's on preorder, and can't wait for them. I like the red uniforms the most because they really add to the away team. I also bought a few Klingons and switched out some heads and added an Ivanhoe head because he sports a similar goatee.
Hey there Snick, how are you doing? I don't think I ever got a chance to tell you that I really like your ape uniforms, I just love the purple hue, they look screen accurate. Thanks Jess. I never like the bulky hairdo of Uhura when I was younger, but the new figure looks different to me. Her hair isn't as crazy, maybe DS changed her sculpt. I ended up buying doubles of all the cast members and four of all the aliens (because they're cool) and to give to my goddaughter in a couple of years, after the Bridge and all the figures are released. I hope she'll like them. :D Ohhh, what a collection she is going to have. Sorry that the pics are a little blury. I'm still trying to unpack from my trip, but I can always take new photos.

Could it be the batteries? Have you used it a lot? I once sent my Canon camcorder back to find out that a chip went bad and they wanted $1000 dollars to repair it. I told them that I hadn't used it enough even though my three year warrantee expired so they checked the hours on the chip and gave me a big discount. These chips store a lot of information which is used at the shop if you ever send your camera in for repairs. So, if you feel that your camera has expired prematurely, you can always send it back for them to check and ask for a deal. Customer service goes a long way and I'm sure they would want a return customer than to lose one. You may want to give it a go.
I saw your lovely photo of Uhura. That rocks. Was it for a convention or a party? All you need is the Upcoming Diamond Select Tricorder, and Uhura's communication device for your ear.

Maybe it's the batteries. I will recharge and see what happens. I got it at Costco so I'm not sure if it's warranted beyond 90 days. They changed their return policy.
That old photo was from a Halloween party at the office, my first Halloween that I ever wore a real costume for (not counting the bad smelling masks in elementary school). Maybe they will sell the communication device at the convention??? I will have to look to see what the Tricorder looks like--maybe I can make one???

The household is in cyclone mode until everything settles and I can be sure that she's ok and no unforeseen bleeding recurs. Four surgical procedures in 2 weeks has got to take its toll.

IRON - Do you have enough material for two Burke shirts? If not I'll go out this week and pick some up.
STIX - Thx! I really like those gorillaz too. I have most of the parts for Urko. With the ever awesome ANG casting me a helmet, Urko will just need to be assembled. I'm thinking I'll work on him this week or next week. I'll post some pix soon.

That would better be decided by Jess. I found a "cloth" while trying to do all of my wife's work and immediately confiscated it. When I get it ot to her, if she says she can get two from it...ENJOY one!!
Eventually, I have to catch up with all of you on getting glyphs, and helmets and open mouthed heads, etc.......

Hey Sticks! I got a chance to study your Ape City shot this morning. It really is unlike anything I've ever seen in a 1/6th scale dio. It is a well made set with an amazing amount of detail, texture and depth.
You may not win the contest but only because the Sideshow Ape line is all but dead. If it were alive and well, I don't think anyone could beat you. No matter who wins no one will match what you have done... No one! I am really looking forward to the premier. It is doubtful that anyone put 1/10th the amount of time and care into their productions.
You are really quite a talent. I hope you can figure out how to use your talents and make the contacts you'll need to create a career in film, television or the arts.
Good Luck with the contest and in all of your future work. I hope Sideshow lets us vote on the best film!

Good morning all,
I have to go get ready for a doctor's appointment. Jom, I totally understand where you're coming from, that was one of my concerns but I gave in because I still believe in this line. The big surprise comes with the monologue however and not by the license itself. I simply use the apes as a parody, If that makes sense?
I've never won one thing in my life, never. And your right, if I don't win this I will be heartbroken. Not being able to work for the rest of my life has its heavy ups and downs, sometimes I want to stop the ride and get off, but the constant doctor appointments bring me back to what I'm trying to leave behind.
I am very curious to see the other entries, I do believe the audience will be able to vote, but then again, how much of that will be influenced by the buddy system. So we'll have to wait and see. Sometimes the wait is the best thing, so I'm just going to enjoy it and take it as it comes. I'm hoping the speech carries the SideShow message better, louder, and more direct than any of the competitors. My tittle is simple, Planet of the Apes by Adam Odell. I thnk voting happens in late June :google and the winners are announced late July. I could have surely done two, but the trip back east took a lot of time out of my schedule, so I have only one entry. GO APES! :joy
I'll talk to you all later this evening. Take care for now.
oh. P.S. Jessica, thanks for the hairy hug, :horror but no thanks! :lol:lol:lol

Angel, here is a shot of two of the fabrics for a future Cornelius suit. The one to the left is made out of cotton and is as heavy as the brown fabric that I have already sent you. It's got a mini check going on. The one to the right is 100% polyester, and it's very light in weight and color, a better grey but lacks the check pattern. Looking at both fabrics, I think the one to the right is more screen accurate just because of the color.

Here is another shot so you can see how it looks with a figure for sizing purposes. It's also the cheapie human figure I purchased...perhaps a future Armando or a future Brent. Don't know yet...probably Armando cause this figure's body has blue marks where some bad dye job bled on it or somebody took a ballpoint pen to it. See how the fabric to the right almost has a check pattern but not quite?

Hi Jess! Keep me in mind. I have been "Dyeing" (Get it), to have a Burke and Virdon set up. The sweater material looks correct, but as Angel has said, is it 1/6th scale pattern? Thankyou!

That figure looks like a Sideshow figure to me. I think that's Patrick "Something" from the X-files and from Terminator 2. That would be a great Armando body!
I like the checkered gray cloth. But you're right; the light gray may be more accurate. Decisions. Decisions. I wonder what would happen if dye remover was used to lighten the checkered pattern and then give it a quick dunk in gray dye perhaps to darken it? Then again, is it really worth it???

Yes, Angel--that's the Terminator guy. I can't remember his name. I got him from that toy store you told us about for $9.99, so I snagged him just because he was a good deal and because he was listed under Sideshow figures. He's also got Barney Rubble feet. I hate that.

Considering there's no collar on that shirt, Burke's blue shirt should probably be pretty easy you huh? As long as the sweater material doesn't unravel.

The material is an overlock weave, and should not unravel. I actually have to tweak the edges where I want it to look ravelled. But check out this other material I found:

By the way, I'm going to try to modify an extra Armando at some point. I'm going to try and remove the goatee fromthe sculpt and fill in a few of the wrinkles in the CONQUEST Armando, in an effort to make him look younger for the ESCAPE Armando...
I'll let you all know how that goes. This is a future project if any f you are considering doing (or getting) ESCAPE Armando. Not sure if this will work or not...
