No mention of what the Throne is made of it just states PVC under the materials section of Jabba.

Do you reckon they will go polystone or plastic on the Throne?

$795 is a lot if it's plastic.

I have the original 1:6 Jabba and throne. Hopefully they are sold separately, because though the Jabba looks much better and something I'd consider upgrading, I'm perfectly happy with the existing throne.

Hard to believe that the original Jabba and throne were $320 combined.

Jabba includes a variety of swappable features including a set of sleeping eyes, a set of open eyes, and a set of wide eyes. He can be displayed with a closed mouth, open mouth, or an open mouth with his tongue exposed, and the figure includes a pair of resting arms, one right pointing arm, and one left arm with a gripping hand.

The Jabba the Hutt and Throne Deluxe Sixth Scale Figure Set includes a figure with the detailed likeness of Salacious Crumb the Kowakian monkey-lizard, which includes an alternate open-mouth head. Salacious Crumb has articulated arms, and includes right and left crossed legs, and right and left relaxed legs for sitting on his fabric pillow.

Jabba’s Throne base is an extremely detailed environment as seen in his palace during Return of the Jedi. It includes a removable hookah with a pipe, as well as an aquarium with a non-removable Klatooine paddy frog, along with an additional Klatooine paddy frog, along with three cups and one plate of food. Wow all right - $800 plus a hefty shipping bill (especially if its polystone, which seems likely given the inserts.) Over $100 more than the HT Delorean? :horror

Something off with the head sculpt to me, perhaps due to the odd choice to have various sets of insert eyes and mouthes. It's a decent effort but the head reminds me of the better Hasbro Jabbas more than accurate to the movie.

I LOVE the paint work, though how it comes out on the production piece is anyone's guess. Would love to see what the original SSC Jabba (which seems a slightly more screen accurate sculpt than this) would look like with that amazing prototype paint job.

Kudos to Sideshow for sculpting a new throne. It looks much the same, but its cool they didn't just reissue the old one.

I must say though - I'm kind of bummed to see this from Sideshow. With a Jabba cameo likely in the Solo movie, I thought it was likely HT would do a Jabba, but now likely not (can't imagine we'll see another head-to head like Luke Jedi on such an expensive/large item like Jabba.)

Whoa

Yeah, given the way the SSC Tauntaun neck seam (for the swappable head) came out - which was really noticeable - I think the eyes/mouth thing on this seems very iffy.

Man the seems look REALLY bad. Look at the mouth in the image of Jabbas tattoo. Really a shame as only dim lighting would hide them. A piece as elaborate as this would be well lit.

I suspect HotToys will give us one eventually. While this piece is an attractive tempt, I will hold off and wait for the HotToys version.

Bossk82
03-07-2018, 01:06 PM
I got the original Sideshow Jabba on Ebay last year. At the time, part of me wondered about waiting to see if Hot Toys ever made their own version. But, I found a good deal online, and could't resist. It was just Jabba by himself though; no throne.

Then, about a month ago, I found an auction for a Sideshow IG-88 (the original one, not the new one) bundled with the Salacious Crumb creature pack. I had really wanted a Salacious Crumb, but the creature pack by itself sold for too much online. Fortunately I was the only bidder, and got an awesome price for the two (less than IG-88 goes for by himself).

So, it's kind of a bummer to see this new Jabba now. But it's also very pricey, so maybe I should just be content with what I have, and the fact that I paid far less for it (but, again, no throne). The older one has a really good sculpt (at first glance, perhaps better than the new one?), just not as good paint. I can't justify owning two Jabbas. I wonder though, had I known, would I have bought this new one instead?

Not sure if the new Salacious Crumb is much of an upgrade. Plus the original came with all the extra little creatures.

397962

So far this not worth the upgrade for those, like me, that have the original. The paint on Jabba is nicer along with the swappable eyes and mouth, but not sure the sculpt is that much better. I definitely would've upgraded Jabba though if they were to sell him separately.

Yeah, there's something off with the sculpt - maybe due to accomodating the insert mouth/eye pieces.

The gaps around the insert pieces is a real worry. The gap/seam around the SSC Tauntaun neck (swappable heads) was awful.

Really not sure why they went this route - for $800, just do two heads (open eyes and narrowed eyes) where the seam can be hidden in the neck folds instead of plainly obvious on Jabba's face.

I have old Jabba with no throne so I'll may be interested in the new one but if 800$ is the price for the bundle the throne alone should be 300-400$, and that's way too much. 825$ was Hulkbuster retail price....I can't justify myself buying a green turd on a concrete slab for that price.

03-07-2018, 01:28 PM
The original sculpt is far superior, though the paint on the proto of the new version is far superior. If anything, this just makes me want to have my old Jabba repainted to match this one. Is Sideshow freaking high with that price? I want a Jabba and throne set but with their usual quality there’s not a chance in hell I’m plunking down $795 plus shipping without seeing the final product first. Even then it’s a stretch. Good looking set but that’s a lot of cash.

Malgus
03-07-2018, 01:31 PM
No way is this worth $800 with this visible joints where the mouth attaches. What the hell is Sideshow thinking? Forget the switch out crap and give us one quality seamless expression. Hate when they ruin a good looking figure or statue to add switch out parts.

397964

I do like the curled tail of the original better fitting on the throne rather than sticking straight out and hanging off.

I think its the weird smile look that's throwing off the likeness on the new Jabba. He looks like one of the animated Jabbas.

He also seems too "smushed" where the upper torso is sitting too low into the lower body. That's the aspect that makes it look like the later Hasbro Jabbas, that always seemed like he'd melted down into the throne a bit.

I wonder if the tail is posable or if it's fixed? I'm guessing it wouldn't be. Yeah, I like the curled tail more too.

Too much cheddar for me to jump in on blind faith for a Sideshow piece, no matter how much I want a Jabba on my shelf. Particularly when I already dislike the visible seams around the mouth, which stand out way too much for my liking. I shudder to think how the factory version could wind up...

Will wait and see how the production piece turns out, and decide from there. Meanwhile I'll just quietly hope that Hot Toys does their own version...

Throw me in the camp waiting on HT version to at least be able to compare the two. For that price and the known variance between SSs proto work to finished product, I just can’t commit close to $1K when another version may be(probably be) better. I think this should’ve been priced at around $495 if it’s all just plastic.

It does seem highly unusual to reveal such a massive, high-priced item and have it ship in just seven months, and also no tease announcement - just straight to pre-order and instantly available at BBTS?

Given the Solo movie coming out so soon (which you know must have a Jabba cameo,) my guess is they got wind of a HT Jabba and rushed this out. There's no other explanation for the compressed timeline on this.

Sideshow has been dragging announcement-to-ship-date to over 18 months a few times in the past year or two for regular figures. Seven months for this scale of product is super suspicious.

Given the Solo movie coming out so soon (which you know must have a Jabba cameo,) my guess is they got wind of a HT Jabba and rushed this out. There's no other explanation for the compressed timeline on this.

My bet: HT Jabba SDCC 2019

This is the strangest Sideshow reveal ever -- just throw it out there on a Tuesday with no fanfare.

All-in-one too... no separate Jabba. No lessor priced options. It's almost like a tester for HT to price their Jabba.

Just preordered from BBTS. They say it qualifies for $4 shipping. I took a screenshot to him led them to their advertised rate.

I had the original, but sold it when I was pregnant. I sort of missed this set, so this was a wonderful surprise. I hope they rerelease the Gamorrean Guard, which go for $300 on eBay.

Because Jabba is the last thing you want to be looking at when you're pregnant.:lecture:lol

Remaking the Dewback might have been a better idea (assuming they aren't already planning to) because then people who purchased the original would have the option of owning two separate ones for their Sandtrooper displays. But nobody needs two Jabbas. It just seems that for the price that they would be better off releasing an item that would appeal to everyone whether they purchased the first one or not.

I was excited to see this too. Not getting it. But it was a fun surprise... really would like an upgraded Jabba... just don't feel this is the one.

I was excited at first, I just saw the images and not who made it and my initial assumption was it was Hot Toys, never even imagined Sideshow would revisit this, but then at quicker glance, the flaws became obvious.

Overall form looks inferior to Hasbro’s most recent Jabba and more like Hasbro’s 2010 Jabba, 2007 Sideshow for the win. It’s like when Hasbro took 3 attempts starting in 2004 to finally make a Jabba to top the ‘83 Kenner.

I have old Jabba with no throne so I'll may be interested in the new one but if 800$ is the price for the bundle the throne alone should be 300-400$, and that's way too much. 825$ was Hulkbuster retail price....I can't justify myself buying a green turd on a concrete slab for that price.

I do like the curled tail of the original better fitting on the throne rather than sticking straight out and hanging off.

Definitely. I really hope they do this (though I suspect they won't). I bought one used last year with both creature packs, Boushh, and Bib Fortuna for about the asking price for this. Creature packs are going for over $100 each now. I'm sure they'll reissue them as well with new paint probably for that amount.

Shouldn't be long before the Dewback and Tusken Raider are back in the lineup as well.

Yeah, I think somewhere in the $550-600 range might have been a more realistic pricepoint. This has a big space commitment, a sky-high price and the distinct possibility that HT will do it working against it.

What the **** sideshow?!? I already have the old one. Why can’t they sell him separately?

I wouldn't rule that out a separate Jabba sale, though you may have to wait for the inevitable re-release. Usually that might have taken years, but this ships in October and SSC has been re-releasing stuff in only a year or so after it "sold out" so it may be as early as late next year they'll offer this "ala carte."

A Dewback ath these days SSC prices may come at 1000$. No thanks.

The other issue with the Dewback is that it's polystone so weighs a ton and needs a box the size of a small garage. The fact they seem to have made this new Jabba out of PVC is encouraging, though it's likely only the figure (which is what the old Jabba was made of,) not the throne.

I really hate polystone - it's fragile, it rules out articulation and has all the handling issues. It's the reason I passed on the Dewback before (that and the fact I wanted a Dewback figure with some limited articulation, not a 1/6 statue) so I'd pass on it again. If they did the original Kenner-style rhino legs/feet (instead of Special edition chicken style) however...

If you list your old Jabba on EBay today you can probably still get $400 for it which would pay for half of your upgrade...if you wait until tomorrow when the news spreads that Jabba will net $130...

Yeah, I dunno why anyone would jump to sell the old one - it has meh paint but its a more accurate sculpt than this, and it doesn't have cracks running through his face where the mouth and eyes insert pieces go.

Judging by the way the seams worked on the Sideshow Taun's swap-out pieces (very visible gaps/cracks,) this one is going to look like Jabba's face has been hit by an earthquake.

This should have been two heads (eyes open/closed, mouth open/closed) with the seam hidden in the neck folds. The individual eyes/mouths was a really silly idea, but saved a few bucks - on an $800 product.:monkey3

This new one has far superior paint (looks gorgeous,) but everyone knows that Sideshow prototype paint and Sideshow production paint are 110% different things.

It's just with the Solo movie coming, it must have appeared on HT's radar along with Greedo.

But yeah, it'd be big bucks too - not sure it'd be $800 though.

Jabba looks like a CGI bantha poo. Original was way better and screen accurate puppet.

I've been trying to figure out what the main problem with the likeness is - the sculpt detail is there and the proto paint is stellar, but its like the features of his face have drifted away from where they should be, and that smile looks super wonky. It reminds me of one of the PT Hutts.

Maybe the separate pieces idea has caused some slight distortion of the overall head, making the face look a bit off. Doesn't mean they won't fix it though - they redid the Snowie Commander and fixed that.

I think HT will eventually do a Jabba. And they'll hopefully do it right with a Jabba only release, and deluxe with the throne. Kinda like the Emperor. That's when it'll be time for me to upgrade my original SS Jabba, while not needing a new throne. The original is just fine.

While this release obviously has issues, I really hope this means Sideshow is focusing on Jabba's Palace. The Rebo Band and some of jabba's henchmen would be awesome. They're characters that HT will never do.

In looking closer at this, it seems the throne is the same size as the old one, but has a riser block hidden beneath to raise the sculpted part up higher. The old throne needed a piece of 1/2" plywood or something to raise it up a bit off the floor.

The sculpt on the older one seems a little more accurate (in terms of where the slots line up with the gargoyles,) but the paint on the new one looks much more accurate (though yeah, it's a proto...)

While the overall color on the Salacious is better (more reddish) the old Salacious looks to be a more detailed and accurate sculpt. They seem to have lost some sculpt detail and thickened up the limbs on the new one. The new one has more articulation (swappable heads swivel and spin legs) versus the old one (which just had spin arms) but not sure you really need articulation with him, or the closed-mouth alternate head - not sure anyone would use that one.

The sculpt on the hookah set-up seems a little less accurate than the old one (the glass container seems more egg shaped) but obviously paint seems more realistic on the new one. The old one has the "smoke inside" look, whereas the new one is more clear.

It looks like a pale pickle without a paint job.

New one looks better. Sorry.

Yeah, the old Jabba paint is like lime green and pale yellow - really not sure what they were thinking. Almost ruins a stellar sculpt.

As someone who has Jabba 1/6 diaoroma... Not sure about this one. The tail really bothers me with the lack of a curl. Sitting on the throne with the tail hanging off is not movie accurate.

Too lazy to read- but is that polystone? The price doesn't even factor in shipping.

In description on the SS listing it specifies the materials as PVC & the weight is TBD. I doubt it is solid like the originals polystone and more plastic. The original weighs 40 lbs.

Didn't they do the same thing with the Han Carbonite? The original with the Jabba palace background was polystone, and the new cloud city Carbon chamber base is plastic, no?

Here's the originals listing..

I don't care how much work they put into it, that price is asinine. $500 tops.
Yep agreed. The price is crazy. I’m wondering if the throne is polystone or something that’s making it more.

I have the original Jabba and throne, but will probably get this. It looks to be a nice upgrade with more display options. $800 is steep, but not unexpected these days. No doubt there will be more reissues coming, because it's a pretty easy cash grab. That's fine, especially if they make improvements along the way. However, I'd like to see SS produce new SW aliens.

the cool things with this one is that you can pose him dead, or with the tongue out being chocked by slave leia (to be announced in two months). etc
overall a really nice paint job not only on jabba but also the throne. (prototypes always look good).

i have the original set and love it, i still think i will buy this one.. collectors are into variations aren't they? i hate when people sells the old to get the new.
real collectors have a collection of ****s. the more variations of the same character the better.

did the vintage collectors threw away their carded figures when they saw hot toys looked better?

sideshow-hot toys will never be as valued as the old stuff for sure. but the same mindset should also apply to these new china plastic toys we call our collection.

keep the old one. buy the new one, have two to display, get a job, use the monthly payment sideshow offers. and stop saying you are going to pass on this when we all know that's a lie.

my 2 cents.

As someone who has Jabba 1/6 diaoroma... Not sure about this one. The tail really bothers me with the lack of a curl. Sitting on the throne with the tail hanging off is not movie accurate.

I like the interchange pieces but that tail is almost a deal breaker. Also the throne I need more on, it looks nearly identical to original.

That being said where is my band?

Go here, suggest it directly to Sideshow. They already have the sculpts and molds and it seems like a no-brainer with Jabba coming out.

Yeah, I think it's hard to get your head around the idea that Jabba and his throne - which were formerly a large (but simple) 1/6 figure and a (fairly simple) display base - are now in that "mega collectible" $1000 range category along with Batmobiles and Deloreans etc.

I know prices have gone nuts in the past few years (who'd have thought Yoda could be a $200 fig?) but it's hard to comprehend Jabba with a fairly featureless block as a $800+ (I'm guessing this is close to $1000 for international buyers) item on-par with the complexity of Hulk-busters and Deloreans that have hundreds of intricate parts with individual paint apps and complex functioning mechanics.

That being said if this was a totally nailed Jabba that was like HT Tarkin - pretty much the living character shrunken down to 1/6 - I'd probably be onboard with buying this because I love Jabba. The issue is, as with many SSC figures, it's very nice but misses the mark in certain fundamental areas. On this, the sculpt just isn't quite there, and I know from experience that the paint (which is always so nice in the proto) will be maybe 60-70% the quality of what the proto shows.

As is often the case with Sideshow, you can almost see the SSC staff looking at prices of HT stuff and going "they charged that for their figure, so we can too, or even charge more!" - when the SSC to HT match-up doesn't quite compute. They probably glanced at Hulkbuster and Delorean and said "same size as Jabba, so... same price!"

For only $200 more than this, you could have bought two Tauntauns AND a Dewback.

Sideshow has been absurdly high priced for a long time. I know we all talk about prices but they take it to the next level and they’ve been guilty of gouging people for a long time and giving little for what you pay for. Figures like Red 5 or Snow Speeder Luke are good examples of figures that came with next to nothing yet they charged well over what Hot Toys would have (and did) charge for a similar figure (farmboy and Jedi Luke are both less). The quality hasn’t gone up, if anything with Sideshow it’s gotten worse. At least Hot Toys keeps a level of consistency or improves.

This Jabba and throne feels totally out of line in my opinion. Sure they’re giving you a decent amount but even so I don’t see the entire package adding up to $800 plus.
