View Full Version : NC-17 Rating for "Grindhouse"?

RT-News writes: "Consider these seven words describing a scene in "Grindhouse:" "Grossly obese man chewing on a baby." Yeah, so is it any wonder rumors claim the grungy Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double feature is heading towards an NC-17?
"Some of it is so graphic and outrageous for a major Hollywood studio, there's no question it's headed for an NC-17 without big cuts," says NYP's inside source.
Also stirring things up are the fake movie trailers separating "Planet Terror" and "Death Proof," to be guest directed by genre filmmakers Rob Zombie ("House of 1000 Corpses"), Eli Roth ("Hostel"), and Edgar Wright ("Shaun of the Dead").
With Zombie's trailer for the fictional "Werewolf Women of the S.S.," picture Nazi concentration camps, mad doctors, blood draining experiments, and topless girls getting branded with swastikas.
Andrew O'Hehir of Salon recently saw Eli Roth's holiday-themed trailer (for a fake slasher flick called "Thanksgiving") and called it "unbelievably gruesome...horrifying, hilarious, and guaranteed not to pass muster with the MPAA. (Wait for the DVD, I guess.)"
And says one studio insider: "Some cuts definitely will have to be made. There's no question." Dimension, which is putting out "Grindhouse," had no comment.
Check out the NYP article for more descriptions of lovely and amazing "Grindhouse" scenes. It might be the best we'll get until the unrated DVD.

Well this should be interesting...
I would think these guys would fight tooth and nail over making cuts to the film(s).
BUT
Many theaters are already hyping the film(s).
So this should be fun to watch play out.

That's how I feel about it too... This is exactly why I think the MPAA is what is draining some of the artistry and free expression from modern film. censoring the artists original vision until it is "tame" enough for an audience. It's rediculous.
I mean, those who want to see this film are not going to be offended by some Nazi imagery, blood, violence and nudity. The films that this movie is supposed to emulate were exactly the same way, so why change a damn thing?
I'd prefer unrated, but NC-17 is great.
screw the MPAA review board.

The first, and only, NC-17 movie I've ever seen was "Orgazmo" I had *just* turned 17 days before it played at a local theater.
I'd be very happy to make Grindhouse my second NC-17 viewing.

This movie will never see theatrical release as an NC-17. The sad truth is that too many major theater chains won't run a film with that particular rating, and many major newspapers/publications won't even run an ads for them.
Thankfully, DVD has given us an almost guaranteed outlet for "unrated" cuts like the ones we're talking about. We'll see it as intended, but it'll take 6-12 months after theatrical release for that to happen.
Which, of course, somehow manages to totally suck and :rock at the same time.

^ thankfully, *some* theaters (http://www.landmarktheatres.com/) won't bow to the man. Unfortunately, they are few and far between.
But as you said, DVD makes the point moot.

So is the US's NC-17 yrs the equivalent to Australias R rating?(over 18's) If so.. ****. I REALLY wanted to see this in cinemas.
I know exactly what you mean about the youth in films today though. I consider myself at an age where Im old and mature enough to see these kind of films, but I've noticed a massive increase of younger viewers in higher rated films nowdays.

From what I understand is that the US version of R means nobody under 17 gets unless accompanied by a guardian. NC-17 means nobody under 17 gets in, period.

In theory you need a guardian to see an R-rated flick if under 17. Most of the time when I was younger they rarely carded me, despite having signs everywhere saying you needed to be 17 to purchase an R-rated ticket. I have actually gotten carded more after I turned 17 then before.

Do newspapers and tv stations still refuse to accept advertising for NC-17-rated films?
I guess we will get a hacked-up "R" version for theaters, and then the unrated DVD. Sucks, because these really need to be shown in their intended state on the big screen.

When you have big studio backing and Quentin's name attached to a film, you can bet it will get away with much more on the theatrical screen under an "R" rating than if it really was a low budget output. I'm sure a bit will be trimmed, but I doubt it will be so much as to ruin the experience.

It will be interesting to see what rating this movie gets in Australia...the 300 was originally rated R..(no-one under 18 allowed..), but was rated MA15+ on appeal from the studio...The Grindhouse will probably have the same problem....I just hope not too much is cut...I am sick and tired of people telling me what "does me harm..".
The people rating these are the true weirdos....No offense to anyone on this board who rates movies etc. for a living..:D

Immigration asking for a green card doesn't constitute 'being carded'. :lol
Actually NC-17 means no child at or under the age of 17 will be admitted. NC-17 took the place of the X rating.

I'm looking foward to this movie because grindhouse flicks were considered extinct for a while now . The last grindhouse flicks i saw were pink flamingos and eraserhead. Those movies were over the top and not rated at all. I guess that was the appeal of gringhouse flicks, there were no boundries for a director, and the audience always knew what to expect with these kind of movies. But having a grindhouse flick promoted as a grindhouse flick should'nt be R rated. But I guess the rating system will always have a say so in artistic expression. Thank God for dvd.:D

It will not be released in the theater as NC-17. It makes a nice story and people oh and ah, but it won't happen. This movie cost money to make and the studio wants to make their money back. That won't happen if it is NC-17, so it will be released as an R and then when the dvd comes around, you'll have an unrated cut. That is not to say, however, that I agree with it.

I just pray that its good. I've been wanting a good zombie flick in a while so i hope it delivers on that front, but regarding the rating , i guess R ratings arent that bad i mean there has been a lot of envelope pushing with R rated films like hostel, saw, ect... S hopefully rodriquez and tarantino knew this from the get go and didn't put things to drastic in their movies that would be later butchered by the rating.

Woah ... well, if much was cut ... it was going to be cut anyway no matter the content. Movie theaters HATE 3 hour movies. It ends up costing them an extra showing or 2 every day, which equals lost money in their eyes. So, I highly doubt the theater consortium would have allowed, say a 3 and 1/2 hour movie. I personally doubt much was cut. And besides, Tarrantino and Rodriquez are good at slight edits to avoid cuts (i.e. The Bride and Crazy 88s in black and white to avoid cuts).

Okay, here seems to be the problems:
1. Rob Zombie's piece, WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS, features a Nazi concentration camp in which every woman is topless. There is also one point, where one of the topless women is tied down to a table, drained of blood and then branded with a swastika.
Sorry, but there are plenty of movies out there with excessive nudity. The only problem I can see with this would be the swastika. However, since the movie is not played seriously, I don't think it would be that much of a controversy.
2. Eli Roth's trailer for THANKSGIVING, features a young girl (played by Jordan Ladd) performing oral sex on her boyfriend in his car. She realises, half way through the act that he has been killed by a slasher, because he happens to be missing his head.
Okay, so River Phoenix can get away with performing oral sex on a DUDE 10 years ago in My Own Private Idaho and get an R rating, but heterosexual filatio is bad?!? The only problem I could see would be if they showed an actual sexual act ... which they would never do. If its the decapitation, well there are plenty of R rated movies with decapitations.
Further on, there is a scene where an obese man eats a baby. I can't believe I just typed that sentence in sincerity. An obese man eats a baby.
Um ... it all depends on how the scene is portrayed. If its serious in tone and shows the baby in a realistic fashion ... maybe. However, in the spirit of the actual Grindhouse flicks, I bet the baby looks obviously like a low budget mannequin.

Im not sure, but my guess would be that Planet Terror was finished first I believe, and its the main one on all the early trailers.
I think the first Sneak didnt have Deathproof on it at all. Only Planet Terror and the fake trailers. So maybe now theyre giving QT's more of the spotlight. Plus it is QT after all. That could explain it as well.

Maybe it was just that there was more Rose McGowan, but that felt more like a film to me. How was Tarantino's character "Rapist #1"? In Planet Terror.
Umm...you'd have to see it to believe it...
Definitely the biggest gross-out moment of Planet Terror.

Well, the wife and I were going to see this Friday. That's not going to happen now. For whatever reason, it's playing locally as 2 different movies! :emperor
Checking other listings reveals that it's still playing as a double-feature if I want to go for a drive, but I don't think that's going to happen.
Unbe-frickin-lievable. :moon

And some of the worst acting of the entire "Grindhouse" experience. :monkey3
