Don't see why they just didn't do that at the end of Civil War

They did an interview or at Newsrama with the guys who did Civil War, and they said they felt it would have been too “gimicky” to kill him off in a Crossover event book. I like how this was handled, though it will be interesting to see who picks up the mantle of Cap. Names like Winter Solider and the Punisher have been thrown around as his replacement.

I can't wait to read this issue! Wonder why decided to kill him off now?

I am sorry, but if this is what the Quesada, Bendis, Millar, etc. "modern" Marvel age is going to be ... make mine something else. Don't get me wrong ... I like the more edgy works that have come out this decade : 100 Bullets, Preacher, Ennis Marvel Books, Fables, etc. However, certain Marvel characters are cornerstones. Cap is more than just a muscle bound hero in tights. He was inspiration to our country in one of our darkest hours. He helped motivate and build morale during the dark days of WWII. He transcended comics and became an Icon ... symbol of what made America great. Doing this now for publicity is insulting ... and don't think they are doing it for anything other than attention. Why the he## would it be making the main stream new first if it was a natural progress of a story arc. Someone leaked it because they want to draw attention to Marvel Comics. Its as bad as, if not worse than the whole Death of Superman story line. And you saw how long Supes stayed dead.

I read Civil War frontline last week and a feeling of disgust began to set in. This feels like an extension of that. And I will be frank ... I don't like it. Let me explain. There are spoilers here, so skip this if you haven't read the book...

When the reporters are talking to Stark and uncover that it was he who masterminded the attack on the Atlantis diplomat ... that he did it to cause fear among the public, to create a fake war to garner support for his Initiative, I thought we were building to a cool ending ... an actual ending unlike Civil War. However, then the reporters pretty much say, "its okay, we won't report this because you were right." I couldn't believe how stupid this was. First, its insulting to the Woodward and Bernsteins of the world. Reporters report .. they tell the world the truth and let us decide right or wrong for ourselves. They don't cower under to the government or hide stuff from the public. But, I could have lived with that, because people are human and sometimes make bad decisions. However, it felt to me like the writer was trying to convince the reader that Stark was right. That it was okay to put American lives at risk for the sake of his pipedream. Now... don't get me wrong, I am a student of history. I realize this stuff happens all the time. It was no accident that the Germans were leaked info claiming the Luistannia was carrying war supplies. Everyone wanted the US to have a pretense to join WWII. And these instances go on and on throughout history. However, that doesn't make it right. Of course, the real world is not always cut and dry / black or white. However, that's what the "fantasy" of comics is suppose to provide us. It gives us a place where we can clearly define right and wrong ... where we can escape the "You can't handle the truth" mentality of the world, if only for 10 or 15 minutes. If Marvel is looking to mimic the currupt nature of the "real world", I can save my 3 bucks a book and turn on the Evening News. If they are trying to tell me the American Spirit is dead, I am done. I don't care if they are correct or not.

Captain America is a historical icon and doing this to him is not better than graffiting the Statue of Liberty. Okay, sorry ... I will step off my soap box now.

P.S. Sorry for any spelling errors... I wrote this from the heart. And my heart is a terrible speller :D

To an extent, I agree with you. I think that showing Stark in a very gray, borderline villainous mind set, is only a set up to something beyond Civil War. Think about it, would you rather have Cap’s side win at the end of Civil War and have things go back to status quo, or have Iron Man’s side win and set up great potential story lines. You have to imagine, Iron Man’s actions wont go unchecked, one way or another he will have to answer for it. WW Hulk will start stirring things up, and I have a feeling will have, for lack of a better term, Civil War 2. I think things will change, the whole Initiative storyline will only serve as a springboard for another event like series.

Here's my 2 cents:

I am certainly no comic book fan or reader. Maybe this is a paradox but I love Marvel characters and films. I own 4 Marvel PF figures. I have nothing against comic books, I just don't collect or read them so my opinion is neutral.

Captain America seems to be a character that's very iconic story wise and visually. I myself am a little surprised a big budget film hasn't been created or isn't in the works. Anyway, maybe comic book sales on his character are down and having him killed off would generate new interest in this character. Maybe Marvel even has plans to create a more modern version of Captain America. Wasn't the original Captain created from a wounded or close to death soldier.

Maybe scientists have figured out a way to create an even more powerful soldier and given Captain America's ability to accept the transformation will emerge as an even more powerful superhero.

This is all speculation, but with Superman, Batman, Iron Man, Hulk, Ghost Rider, Spiderman, all having the attention, Maybe Marvel thought killing off Captain America would breathe new life...forgive the pun...into that character. Maybe he'll be back with a new costume....that could be cool

i agree, our media twists things to appear this way so why can't comic writers be creative and not copy the real-world media. but at least they had characters like the thing who saw both sides and having good and bad points.

cap will be back though but they'll take a couple of years showing the new cap coming into his own. i would love to see the punisher take over the cap type roll....he way is kick a$$ and ask questions later. it's black or white, if you're a bad guy you die, if not, you just get punched in the face.

Wow....this sucks. I'm getting a "Death of Superman" vibe and a "The Neo-Captain America is too merciless something has to be done..." vibe as well. They cloned Thor so that'd be an interesting twist to clone Steve and see how much more disconnected that character could be....especially if they take the aspect that the clone wouldn't have any of the original's memories. I just hope they put his replacement in a different uniform so when Steve does come back it isn't in anything to radicalized. :monkey2 RIP Steve Rogers......

My theory: The killed Cap was an L.M.D. which would be an easy switch to have made since they were using Nick Fury's safehouse. I would think he would have one of those L.M.D.'s floating around. That could explain why Cap gave up at the end of the Civil War. I haven't read the issue yet but perhaps the Punisher (working in tandem with Cap) "assassinated" the LMD allowing the world at large to believe Cap to be dead. This would allow the real Cap to work underground and eventually come back to reclaim his mantle in a miraculous return from the dead to glory.

They have gone the route of having someone else be Captain America many times during Cap's career. So it would not be new for this to happen. He has also came back as different personas. This is all retread stuff if they do this.

Of all the theories presented here, Natrix's seems the most plausible. I too was very disappointed at the reaction of the reporters in the Front Line issue but Iron Man will go down, one way or the other.
Does anyone know how Thor died? I just recently started reading comics again with Civil War arc and I don't know much about the things that happened before. Thanks!:)

Captain America's death will be a temporary thing, much like Superman's death and Batman's broken back.

There are certain characters in comic books who are pretty much untouchable and Captain America is certainly one of them, at least IMO, he's one of Marvel's biggest icons.

I don't really think this will affect the value of the PF at all though, it might prompt more people to pick up the comic books, but it doesn't follow that those people will then pay 100's of dollars for a statue of him as well. Guess we'll have to see though.

The Captain America PF is a very cool piece though and the best exclusive in SSC's history IMO.

The first thing I thought was that they had cancelled the PF. *Whew*
:lol "Whew" indeed. ;)

I haven't bought a Captain America comic since the 80's. The new hard boiled squinty eyed half-his-face-always-in-shadow Caps of today haven't appealed to me as much. Always looking for a good new story though.

He'll obviously be back but I'm definitely curious as to where they're going with this. My favorite storyline was from issues 332-350 where Steve Rogers stepped down as Cap and was replaced by a nearly psychotic John Walker (who would later become USAgent.) Of course they had a showdown with Rogers retaking the mantle. I wonder if they're going to go down a similar course with whatever story they're doing now.

Death certainly wouldn't be a low point for Cap. Not after all the late 80's/90's silliness of him becoming a werewolf, having a full body blood transfusion (remember kids, super soldier serums kill our athletes every year :monkey1) and of course that whole "Heroes Reborn" thing when he was drawn by "He Who Shall Not Be Named." :lol

While this came a shock to me, I figured it would happen. I just thought Capt. Or Iron Man would end up kiling the other in the final CW. So I guess the way Capt died was the most shocking. I picked up the issue, but haven't read it yet. There are two covers. One of them says Civil War Epiloque on it so I guess it is still part of CW. For his death to really mean something they better not bring him back. Let him live in the Ultimate Parallel world or what ever. While I am sad to see Capt go, I was with Iron Man :monkey3

What I want to know is why is it AGAIN Iron Man who's the "traitor" ? the last time that happened was when I dropped Marvel comics all together. I've only just got back into it with the relaunch of Moon Knight.

All joking aside, Captain America may be down for now, but he will not stay down. He is too important to the Marvel universe to put down for good. Cap is an American icon. Like Supes, he will be back. And it will be a great day when he does come back. He will be back. It is only a matter of time before he comes back and starts kicking some @$$.

The only way they could redeem this is to have Captain underground. This could generate HUGE sympathy for Capt.'s cause, and would make Stark look really really bad. Once enough support is drawn Rogers could reappear with enough clout and honor to battle Stark from a moral AND physical standpoint. He could do a lot from this position. But keeping him dead? Really killing him? In my eyes, that's murder--but on the part of the writers. They would have to have WANTED to kill him, and that to me is both sick and subversive.

:emperor Steve Rogers is Captain America personified. Sure he's a bit rough around the edges. Sure he's an idealist. Sure he can come off as a bully. (Read "The Ultimates.") But his ideals are bloody brilliant, and he's now shown that he's not afraid to buck the administration in charge to see to it that those ideals are upheld.

I hope Quesada is smart enough to leave his personal feelings out of the character.

Interesting. I haven't been reading comics for a year or so mostly because I'm sick of retread, but this issue I might have to find. It will probably be like the Death of Superman thing, I went down to the comic store that day after school and it was long soldout.
Captain America was always best when he was fighting symbolically in a war but with all the other superheroes with much more superior powers running around it would be hard for him to stick out of the crowd. I think they're killing him off to recreate him with better powers.
Captain America issues never really sell all that well unless theres a really good artist on them like Cassaday, I think this is a good thing for the Capt, it should reinvigorate the character.

I do wish Capt. was taken out in a bit more grandiose way, like having the Hulk smash him into paste or something, a sniper bullet is a bit boring.

Forget Bucky returning as the Winter Soldier, Marvel just a few weeks ago did something even worse. In Civil War: The Return they brought back Captain Marvel. His death in the graphic novel "The Death Of Captain Marvel" was one of the greatest death scenes in comics. Mar-Vell hasn't been brought back to life, he's just been taken out of his time. He's still going to die, but his return kind of cheapens Jim Starlin's great story.

Was it at least a cool story?

My wife was watching the news tonight when I was in the kitchen and I heard her call me, I heard the word "sniper" and immediately scrambled to the family room to see what the breaking story was. Of course you can probably guess what they were reporting about. :) When it was done my wife said, "They report that on the news?" :lol

holy crap. i just got done explaining to the wife (who listened w/ feigned interest lol) about how the 2 characters Marvel have never brought back were Bucky and Mar-Vell. sheesh! that's partly why i stopped collecting. in ye olden days, "shock stories" were rare enough to hold some dramatic weight. but nowadays every freakin arc is a death, rape, alt timeline where universe is destoyed, story.

Yeah I figured this issue would sell out fast. I usually go to the comic shop (that won the SDCC best comic store in 2005) on my way home from school on Thursdays. Today I just went to a store up the street that sells them. They are one of those Dungeon and Dragons/Word of Warcraft/minature battle game shops. They don't bag or board their comics, but since they aren't a "comic book shop" I figured they would have it still. Sure enough I get there and they pull it straight out of the box for me. Got one of each cover. The other cover kinda sucks, but the other is pretty cool. Still haven't read it. Just glanced through it - looked at the pictures you know. :lol

Speaking of Joe Simon...Still, the character's death came as a blow to co-creator Joe Simon.

"We really need him now," said Simon, 93, who worked with artist Jack Kirby to devise Captain America as a foe for Adolf Hitler.

We really need him now is an understatement.

But at least Rowling has gone on record with this information, so it wouldn't be totally out of left field for most of her readers. It makes me think that Marvel had a hand in getting this information out to the media because I can't see it being that big of a deal if a comic character gets bumped off.

Yea it is, but Marvel should be ashamed of themselves. First, they have Cap surrended to Iron Man without a fight like a little girl. THEN they have him just get sniped by some random sniper. They really must not like him to have him go out like that. At least have him fight somebody, or try to stop something important, but not like that. And I'm not even a fan of Cap, and I think it's really cheesy of Marvel.

BUT, on a lighter note. My brother thinks Cap just went undercover to go hunt Al-Qaida :chew :chew :lol :lol

Read the issue first. Saying he was killed by a sniper is a red herring and doesn't ruin any of the story....its actually profound the way he dies because it leaves questions unanswered and leaves a nice "I wonder what will happen to _________" formenting in their head. Without ruining too much for those whom haven't read the issue, Cap was betrayed, a hero brought down by one of the least likely of suspects in a bit Greek Tragedy....After actually reading and digesting the issue I'm actually not upset the way he was killed but only that he WAS killed. The way he went out was poetic a hero brought down by his trust (even though its not that clean and dry) and the look on his face and the last thought must have been one of pure and complete pain. That's all I'll say about it but I'd love to have this conversation out in the open....

If anyone cares, Captain America wasn't the only person shot recently. Released February 28th, in Amazing Spider-Man #538, #### ### gets shot through the heart. Contrary to Cap stepping in the way of the sniper's bullet, Peter does the complete opposite and steps aside to avoid the shot. :monkey2

Cap treads a fine line between superhero and American Hero. As a superhero he could have died fighting some villain in a titanic showdown but I like the idea of it happening on his terms, after he willing gave up his shield, allowed himself to be manacled with superstrength binders, and paraded in front of his country. Having him taken out by a conspirator's gun puts him in such company as Abraham Lincoln, JFK, and Martin Luther King Jr. Very fitting.

I think the Hulk will come back and team with Namor, And Thor. Namor's not happy about the assassination attempt, and Thors not gonna be happy that somebody (Tony & Reed) cloned him. The same two guys that shot the Hulk out into space to forever live on a planet by himself, but didn't forsee him getting sucked in a wormhole.

That art is for "Civil War: The Initiative". I believe the image circulating around with Iron Man in red, white and blue armor colors is a Photoshop image as I've never seen any indication of a variant cover (I just picked up CW: The Initiative this past week). Though I could be wrong.

::SPOILERS::

Actually,in the comics Tony Stark is now the *new* Director of SHIELD.He even has a newly redesigned heli-carrier in red and yellow colors and has improved the defense agency with his own company's technology. He has begun a program called "The Initiative" which plans to put superhero teams in every state in the US and even one for Canada (Omega Flight).

Ah, I see. I haven't been keeping up with the Marvel U at all. I can't say I like what they did to Iron Man. I know he's an arms developer for a long time but I never thought he was so complacent with aligning himself with the government's agenda.
If the Cap armor is just a hoax, it's a strangely timed one.

Yes these are the first run prints. It says so on the right side of their home page:

I like most of the design. I'm a fan of the whole GI Joe style costume design in comics, but those pockets should blend in more with the costume and not be so random. They clutter up the design.
But I think the bullets as the teeth of the scull emblem is a great idea, they should use that on the regular Punisher costume.
