I can't wait to see the full figure, from what I can guess of the pose I think I'm going to really like it and I'm kinda glad they went with the outfit they did (even though I don't recognize it) since it makes it a little more interesting than if it were one of the more famous outfits he wore.

Is there a precedent for a PF going up for preorder, followed by a complete reculpting of the head? Because that's what this would take. I definitely don't see them changing it after a high profile announcement/reveal--this is the Elvis we're going to get.

I know they resculpted Buffy's hair and they could resculpt Elvis' hair, but the complaints are about a lot more than just his hair. The whole choice of facial expression is controversial. A new paint job is not going to take away that goofy gleeful expression.
Have they ever completely resculpted a piece after being revealed to the public?
There are often changes between the prototype and the production piece, I just can't remember a time when the change was as major as a complete head resculpt.

Sun Records Rockabilly Elvis ordered.
I have been slowly coming to the conclusion that most PFs, like most 1:6 figures, will need repaints. The PF paint quality is just not what it was with Dracula, or Mr. Spock, or Old Ben Kenobi, and truth be told, those paintjobs could still be improved. I thought the John Wayne paint was a real letdown. I keep looking at pictures of Frodo and thinking if the eyebrows were different and the eyes themselves done better, there's a better resemblance there.
Painting means yet another learning curve for me, but it is what it is. So now I'm looking through the paintjobs to the sculpt just as much as I can. From some angles this one does evoke E for me. Eye of the beholder and all that.

Dave has seen the sculpt and said it was great so maybe they can tweak the paint apps but I doubt highly an approved sculpt will change at this point.

tomandshell
02-12-2007, 12:34 PM
I really think that there are more issues with the sculpt than can be explained away by the paint.
(And if our hopes for an awesome Elvis ride upon the chances of a final assembly line production paint job being superior to the Sideshow in-house prototype paint job--however rushed--let me point you to a few dozen threads where that didn't happen!)
I just think he looks too happy, to the point of goofy silliness--and a new coat of paint isn't going to change him from Gomer Pyle into the King of Rock and Roll.

I'm sure that the artist did a good job capturing whatever picture was chosen as the basis for the piece. I just wish they had gone a different direction.
There is a lot of joy to early Elvis performances, which has been captured here.
But as a stand alone piece, it doesn't have the attitude and sex appeal that many people associate with early Elvis.

The problem with sculpting Elvis is getting the likeness approved;said approval is in the direct control of Priscilla, whose memory is, I think, not the most reliable. I worked on an Elvis project about 10 years ago, and it was an exercise in frustration. There were 6 sculptors in the shop where I was working; we all took a shot at him, and they were ALL rejected. At least 2 of them were pretty fair likenesses;certainly better than the Mattel version that had been supplied by the clients as a reference. I also learned more about Graceland than I ever wanted to know;shows what happens when po' white trash gets money...PS

And they say Star Wars fans will buy anything.:lol
Here's what popped into my head when I saw the Elvis PF:

I hope they can fix the likeness, or it is just the pictures.

Slap some braces on him and it's Butthead. Now we just need Beavis.

I think it is a great likeness, just not a wonderful choice of expression.

I dunno, even when I cover the moth it still doesn't strike me as him for some reason. I can't out my finger on why it looks off to me though.

We are on page twelve of this thread. Has Sideshow even responded to the negative feedback on this piece?

I'm just not seeing the resemblance here. Oh, and the left shoulder appears to be dislocated.
On the plus side, what a freakin' cool exclusive. Probably the best PF exclusive released so far. It's a must-have (though the statue itself may not be...:monkey3 )

Anyone seen the 77 CBS special when a girl shout at Elvis and he just goes "you'll have to wait to after the concert honey !"

I cannot understand all of this negative criticism. This is clearly the finest sculpture of Liberace I have ever seen. It IS supposed to be Liberace isn't it?? Elvis---???!!
:doh
Never mind. I can understand all of the criticism after all.:o

I swear I thought it actually was supposed to be Liberace when I saw the amateur pics surfacing online. When I saw it was supposed to be Elvis, I couldn't get the Liberace thing outta my head. Kathy Bates's character from Misery would surely love one of these bad boys.
ok, so after talking with someone on Sideshow, the current 'prototype' isn't exactly what SSC was going for, so yeah, we're all in agreement. There are changes planned, but some aspects will remain the same. but the items we're having issues with, are noted, before we even said stuff about it.
we can get off SSC for a while. though i -did- get it on pre-order just cuz of the guitar. :)

The only thing I think wrong with it is the huge grin. I think the likeness is there.

I hope no issues of this sort attach themselves to anything having to do with Universal Monsters products. I would cry. Real tears. Seriously.

That's good to hear. But shame on Sideshow for rushing this piece for TF knowing the issues with it, especially given the magnitude of the person they are trying to portray. They should have known that fans would look upon this piece with a very critical eye.
Here's hoping the changes bring about a marked improvement.

Thankyouverrymuch, Bannister. I try to keep 'em coming.
Okay, I raise this with trepidation knowing SS peeps will probably hear about it...but there's one problem that hasn't been raised, and it's why I said "paint job problem."
Elvis had dark girly eyelashes.
Please, no Leia PF lashes for E, now, but the proto paint job needs a little liner or something. Maybe modest sculpted lashes but let's not go overboard. And at this early stage of his life, he had more than a hint of the dark circles under his eyes that Mama Presley also had.
His face at this age had a baby-fat pudginess that this sculpt has captured. I think it's accurate, though it's thrown many of us off.

And while I'm mouthing off, his eyes could be darker (there's more than one shade of blue available) and it's time for the white "eyelight" dots to go in favor of a heavy gloss coat.
No more white dots. Especially not on PFs.

A step in the right direction, no?

Right! No white dots! Now just close his mouth so he isn't so "gummy" and make it so he doesn't look like he's mouth breathing.

The Elvis sculpt is by Mat Falls. I finally found the "Ask Sideshow" articles from Toyfair.

Gruff, what all did you change in your photoshopping?
Gruff Old Bear

Selected the irises of his eyes and played with hue/saturation until they were a dark blue. Selected the upper eyelashes already there and darkened then the same way, then smudged them toward the outer eye corners for a little length. Smudged the inside corners of the eyebrows to soften them. That's all.

Impressive. It looks like the skin tone is a little different too. But the really interesting thing is that somehow the cheeks look fuller. Man, I'm probably going to have to order this in hopes that the production piece looks better than the prototype. But if so I bet that'll be a first...

Hmmm...one week later this thread had sunk like a stone...the exclusive Elvis PF with the guitar is still not sold out...
...and the estate-approved 1:6 Green Beret John Wayne has a completely new headsculpt by Mat Falls...
