OM F'N G

This is going to be another GREAT year from Hot Toys!

I expected the Alien Drone but NOT the Powerloader!!!!That is an unexpected surprise and fantastic news. I wonder if it comes with the Ripley.

With this announcement, this makes me think that the Alien Queen could certainly possibly be a reality. Could you imagine a 1:6 scale Alien Queen!?!?

Not Ed expensive, I think less, it is basically a highly designed and detailed frame piece, Ed was far more complex to design and required far more material to produce.

Dude.... I was floored to see this coming... Never in a million years expected the Power Loader. The Alien Warrior is a nice treat as well.... We needed one of those.

Drake looks a LOT better in the QVTR and Hudson looks ok as well.... Now if only we can get a really good sculpt from somewhere of Bill Paxton we will be all good on the ALIENS front.

YES! This is awesome news! Both of them look great, it looks like I'll have to save some more to buy another damn Ripley. I really hope Hot Toys releases another Ripley as shown with no accessories so I can afford a second one.

The Alien Warrior looks fantastic, they didn't cheapen out and reuse the AVP sculpt! Now I hope Sideshow will offer a special price on Multiples of that Warrior, one just wont cut it.

What a pleasant surprise to wake to. :D

Welcome to the board usmcchet9296!

The Power Loader and the Alien are so cool! I'm getting both! Though I wonder about the movability of the Power Loader. Judging from the preview picture, it looks like the elbow joint of the Power Loader's left "arm" can't move. I could be wrong (i hope I am!), but to me it looks like that. If that is so, the Power loader should definitely be less expensive than the ED209 (gosh, I love that ED209!).[/URL]

Albeit this IMO cooler Aliens-Alien is coming up, I'm still not canceling the AvP brown Alien. The movie was bad, but the Alien design was good. Not as good as the original Alien design, but still.

SS should just let Hot Toys make all their 1/6 lines from now on and just concentrate on their PF's and Busts.

02-11-2007, 10:20 AM
Amazing releases like this only make Sideshow's own 1/6 product look even more inept IMO. The Power Loader likely required as much or maybe more R & D than any armored SW figure yet instead of fobbing Aliens fans off with lame excuses Hot Toys still went ahead and did it and I'm sure the Alien Queen will follow in the near future. With Hot Toys continuing to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in 1/6 scale and Medicom also having a strong showing at Toyfair Sideshow have got to pull off nothing less than a miracle with their own 1/6 figures if they are going to compete because right now they aren't in the same league as either.

That'd be great if we wanted to pay in the 150.00 range for every 1/6 figure. I for one, do not!

The prices are high but the quality is so much better it's usually worth the extra $.
Even if Sideshow were to improve the quality of their 1/6 figures to Hot Toys or Medicom levels of quality there's little chance that the prices would remain the same. I guess it depends on whether you want a genuinely "high end" 1/6 figure or something that's decidedly inferior.

I doubt that. HT's production numbers for their figures are not that high, I'm sure with SS help would make them higher, like in the case of SW. I'd pay $90 a pop for figures and up to 130 as I've paid for other quality Hot Toys figures.

customizerwannabe
02-11-2007, 10:50 AM
I've paid over 200.00 a figure and that's ok now and then, but a SW line that will have over 20 figures? No thanks. While the LOTR line needs help, I think the SW line is pretty decent. I much prefer HT quality. They RARELY disappoint, while SS disappoints on a semi-regular basis. The Predator and Aliens lines are incredible and SS couldn't have done it without their usual corner cutting. If they could produce enough to drop the HT figs to 90.00 I'd be all over it.

The Hot Toys figures look good, not necessarily better then Sideshow's offerings. The only issues I see with Sideshow are their head sculpts missing the mark or the factory paint jobs being poor. Sideshow does need to improve their basic body and accessories a bit, but if you compare them with what Hot Toys or Medicom first started using you'd see that for a time, Sideshow's bodies were just as good if not better in some aspects.
Hot Toys recycles a lot of their head sculpts and accessories so even though they can spread the cost out over a few releases, their figures are still high priced.
And HT paint jobs can be bad, worse then some of Sideshow's worse offerings and yet more expensive.
In the past, Hot Toys basic bodies were terrible, they all had extremely long arms. It's only been a couple of years or so since HT fixed that problem. HT also screwed up the proportions on their weapons, for many years their weapons were out of scale being too large. Sideshow never had this problem.

Medicom figures are Way overpriced. For what you get, Sideshow is the better value. Sometimes Medicom will make a great costume. Better then what Sideshow has done in the past and they deserve credit for it, but it's rare that one of theirs is worth the $100 +.
Just compare the new Snake Guns Of The Patriots figure to Sideshow's Creature From The Black Lagoon figure. Snake has a few more accessories and a tactical vest, yet he'll easily be much more expensive than Sideshow's figure.
Most Medicom Figures should at least be the price of Sideshow's Star Wars figures. And without Sideshow importing these Medicom figures, you would be paying double what you are now.
Medicom however misses the mark on likenesses frequently. I think it's rare that they actually nail a likeness, it's far more common with Sideshow.
As far as pushing boundaries, Both Hot Toys and Medicom are playing catch up to Dragon and Dragon In Dream. Dragon especially paved the way long before Hot Toys got around to what they're doing today.
Just Look at DID's Samurais. They're a little more than an imported Medicom figure, and they far exceed Medicom's quality.

"And without Sideshow importing these figures I would be paying double what I am now"
Seeing as I live in the UK and usually have to pay more than US collectors anyway it hardly makes much difference to me whether Sideshow import Medicom and Hot Toys figures or not and in some cases I actually save money by ordering from Hong Kong or Japan (my RAH Boba Fett will cost approx $140 shipped to the UK from Hobbylink Japan compared to $150 plus shipping from Sideshow).
But that aside you made some intresting points,I admit my knowledge of 1/6 figures isn't huge as I've only been collecting that scale for just over a year but based on the figures I've bought and seen in that time Sideshow are currently some way behind the best efforts of other 1/6 companies, particularly with things like the quality of the outfits and production figures looking the same as the protos.
As much as I like them I do not think Medicom and Hot Toys are perfect, each has issues that have been discussed many times and I agree they are overpriced, but I feel the Sideshow figures are too. I can't comment on Dragon or DID figures as I've not really seen any pics of them, but right now I feel Medicom & HT are making the best quality 1/6 figures from the licenses I'm most intrested in and of characters I actually want so they will get my cash until someone else does a better job .

Les, you doubt HT's ability to bring us an amazing Alien warrior? :lol

Yes. I mean, don't get me wrong, I WILL be getting the figure! :duh

BUT...any company can jump the shark bro.
That photo is just not as on as I had hoped for. I mean, they (HT) have been pretty much SPOT ON so far in quality and image of the released figures they have produced, even the AVP line, but the image that has been released of this ALIENS version warrior, is not that close if compared to how good a job they've done before now.

Remember, I have been staring at images of ALIENS for months now, workingon some customs and repainting some other sculpts, since my trip to L.A. and to Bob's basement, and I have seen things, you people haven't even dreamed of....(oops!, sorry...a Roy Batty moment there...:D ), but yes, I can doubt.

When I see better shots, and am sure they have captured the look of an alien in that movie accurately, I will be on board and throw all the halleluiahs to the wind.

Sorry to be such a putz, but I have had a LOT of hopes on the HT line to be the very best...I won't let up just because of an announcement.

If nothing else, note this, that I put together for reference in the last month or so:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a10/angremien/ALIENWARRIORDRONEChart3Aliens01A.jpg

Does this ad below not look a bit off, or at least, MESSY, compared to the above refs?

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a10/angremien/HTALiensw.jpg

I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.
And I will be a holdin' one as soon as they come out! One way or the other!

I just hold HT to some higher standards, since they are gonna charge me higher prices.

screamingmetal
02-11-2007, 01:37 PM
You're right Les, there are some very subtle differences everywhere. The most obvious one is a very smooth tube like form on the side of the head that slightly curves down into what I would call a check bone. On the figure I can't see that line, what is there is a segmented form that actually curves the opposite direction it should.
There are some deviations from the design and if they're enough to decide not to buy then you'd be making the right decision.

I personally don't find too much issue with it.

pjam
02-11-2007, 01:37 PM
There's a hell of a lot of light playing on that dome in that prod shot too IMO. I need to see the vtr and a few floor shots to really see what's going on there...

screamingmetal
02-11-2007, 01:49 PM
You're right bcm77, being outside the US does mean much higher shipping costs. I paid around $180 for my Medicom Spider-Man 2 figure which includes shipping. Had I bought that same figure from Sideshow, it would've been around $120. Or I could've gone a cheaper route and got one from a US dealer for around $100 shipped.
So I'm seeing an obvious difference which others would not.
Sideshow and other companies are making improvements slowly over time, I've definitely seen the difference from all, but I agree Sideshow seems to be lagging a little behind others. I just wouldn't go so far to say that they're not in the same league. Sideshow was the first and for a long time the only company that had excellent wrist articulation. It's something that Hot Toys copied and improved upon.

I kinda get the feeling that SS is transitioning into that. With distributing rights, SS gets paid and it frees up their staff to do their statues and the like.

I used to think that Hasbro would buy SSC in the next five years -- and maybe they still will. Now I'm thinking that HT, Medicom, SSC might do something without Hasbro. Who knows. I certaintly haven't done the business research to make any accurate predictions.

Well in the toy industry theres quite a lot of partnering these days... i guess it's a good way to share the expensive license fee. like i saw on Medicom website having POTC bust made by Gentle Giant... etc

Medicom concentrates on their 1/6 real action heros of POTC products while GG takes care of nice busts and i believe they probably share the cost of aquiring the license of producing POTC stuff? hey everyone benefits from it... and both company dont compete with one another as they make $ from their own genere.

This is just amzing news!
We knew it was coming sooner or later, but to see it finally become a reality is just incredible!

Having said that, I agree with Les. This does not look likt the perfect, exact, movie accurate warrior from Aliens.
It looks awesome, but it is not the exact replia in 1/6 scale of the movie creature.
My guess is they went with a more generic body so it could be used for the Alien drone with minimal extra tooling. I'm obviously still going to get it and count my blessings for being able to even get something this cool, but I'm still left with the feeling that it is not as gloriously perfect as it could be.
But enough of that! Let the wookie dance begin!
:chew

How long do you guys figure it will take HT to unveil the Queen and the Alien drone? Will the queen come first? Or the drone? I'm pretty sure we'll get some type of exclusive battle scarred warrior from Aliens as well.

pjam
02-11-2007, 06:33 PM
Yep abake, we're gonna get a bunch of these, drones, crawlers, blue and BD, I'm hoping the BD will have some kind of flourescent acid paint apps...

As for the Queen, well now that the PL is out of the bag I'm sure an announcement will follow failry closely, certainly within a year or so. My best guess is we MAY see it announced at SDCC, if not later this year for an 08 release.

http://photos2.figures.com/gallery2/showphoto.php?photo=3002

Truth be told, it does look a bit odd... I'm going to get it for sure, but it looks much more like the usual "interpretation" rather than the stunningly film accurate beast we got for AvP (other than the fifth spike in the back, but that's a minor isue for me).

Hmmm.
I'm not that happy anymore.
Still happy, but not that happy.
How hard can it be to look at a picture, check out some movie memorabilia and do it exactly the way it looked in the film?

The Alien Warrior does look to be a bit rougher than they should be... however this is a prototype... and could even be an early version.

Either way I'm buying it, but I do hope it looks a little more accurate once he's in hand!!!

The PL looks like a static model, doesn't it? I wonder if it's just a mock up to get interest in the development of the piece.
As for the alien, well, I doubt we'll see much change. The most glaring errors are in the arms and torso, kinda big to smooth out now, so close to production.
We'll see.
I wonder if HT reps visit this board, or any other board for that matter.

The PL will have limited articulation, you can bet on that, HT won't make a static piece, especially with the Queen on the way.

I'm sure they do monitor this board, as many companies do, but in this case I think Howard probably wanted to do this since he was a kid...

HC is a stickler for detail as we all know... and they will hold back releasing a piece until they get it right sometimes... I hope they have the reference material you're talking about. It won't hurt for one of us to forward this chart with a few notes as HT and Alienophiles as we probably know more about the Giger design details and film photo ref material than they might...

So maybe email Howard Chan, Creative Director at the HT site. He's the kind of guy who might order some changes or modifications to enhance the piece, we will ALL benefit from it.

Hot Toys Design Team,

First off, let me congratulate you on the amazing figures and products in general you have been releasing in the last couple of years!
As a company you have shown a love for deatil and quality craftsmanship that are not easy to parallel.
I am a huge fan of the Alien and (to a lesser extent) Predator franchises, and as such have been following and buying your releases in the 1/6 scale format. I have just been looking at your new products being previewed at the NY Toyfair: the Power Loader and warrior from the movie Aliens. Both look like fantastic pieces and I am ecstatic that these are finally being made as posable model kits in 1/6 scale! It is a dream come true.
However, I do have a few concerns with the warrior from Aliens... being such a big fan, I know this creature intimately, and I noticed that your figure is not accurate to the movie creature in several aspects. I visit several boards where there are many reference photos from the movies available that I'm sure I and a lot of other Alien and Aliens fans would gladly share.
I hope I don't come off as rude, I would certainly understand if for whatever reasons Hot Toys had decided to design an interpretation of the Aliens warrior rather than an accurate film model.
Finally, let me convey to you the excitement all of us fans of the Alien and Predator franchises share thanks to the outstanding work Hot Toys is doing!
Thank you very much for your time.

Albrecht.

P.S. So, when do we get to see the alien from Alien, the Nostromo crew, the Queen from Aliens, Bishop, the Alien3 creature, etc etc, etc

Another good idea...
But too late, I already sent this letter to HT, hopefully they'll find the time to reply and I can link them to the different boards that discuss their wonderful line of toys.

Maybe you guys could also drop them a line.:monkey3

Great letter abake, respectful yet passionate about accuracy concerns as is their mantra as fans too so it's cool I think. I think a few more emails like that from others with ref photos and thread links would support what we're saying as long as they are posed as "fellow fans and collectors". I can't think of ANYONE better to do this than Les as he's seen them in person...

One other thing as far as design concerns go, it would not be that difficult to modify the dome sculpt IMO, most of the design elements have already been worked out, the dome is just one piece really...

It's a great time for us Indy! A Great time!

I know, 1 1/6 Power-Loader after having just been given a 1/6 ED-209...I still can't believe it! Dreams DO come true! Now if only SS would announce an Indiana Jones licence for 1/6 and 1/4, I could not ask for anything more. Ever.

Of course I'm sure it's all in due time, with Indy IV due in 2008, I'm 99% certain there will be an SS line of 1/6 and 1/4 Indy figs...it just can't come soon enough for me...but alas, the stellar 1/6 LOTR line, the 1/6 SW line, Jabba and Throne, 1/4 Boba Fett, RAH Boba Fett, and now even FURTHER HT Aliens figs (including the actual 'ALIENS' style alien, AND a Power-Loader) will no doubt tide me over until the 2008 announcement. Indeed, it's a great time to be a collector! :D

If they do a Queen, it's going to cause me to spiral out of control, picking up all this stuff that I am passing on right now. That new Alien warrior is wicked.

I'm with you Michael, I'm seriously going to have to get sculpting and earn some money over the next year because (ignoring the Jabba which I've already canceled) i REALLY wanted ED-209... when I was younger that was just the coolest thing I'd seen on film... ever

And the power loader was a VERY close second. Either of those would make wonderful displays, on a shelf or in an alcove, with a single spotlight above them shining down. You wouldt even need Robocop, or the Alien queen... just these pieces alone are wonderful display items.... and I hate these companies for making them :banghead

I do note that the ALien Warrior is a prototype...so maybe it will get a better paint at least. It is not bad....just not accurate. Not as DEAD ON as that Powerloader. Did you see how they even have the pattern in the shoulder harness straps?!?!? Man! That's time!

The Power loader is just breathtaking. Hot Toys really out done themselves there. I hope it won't cost more then Ed-209 but since it's so complex, it wouldn't surprise me if they say it's $250.
The Warrior does have it's flaws, but I'm still at least going to buy one. The body sculpt kind of looks a little chewed up, I would've thought it was smoother.

I hope HT gets the Alien license someday, I want a Nostromo space suit!

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but I did that WAY back when ED-209 was first showcased as a prototype, with attached photos, links to images on the Robocoparchive.com site, and links to these boards so HT could see what people were saying about the 'screen-inaccuracies' (the double barrels that should be single on the missile arm, the lack of detail in the "mouth" area, the angled head dome that should be more round...etc., etc.) Now, I still love the piece in-hand...it's AMAZING!, but HT didn't make any of the changes between prototype and final piece except (arguably) a less 'angled' head dome...

But still, it's worth a shot!!! I'll email about these Aliens pieces as well...

Hot Toys has a penchant for rereleasing figures and making tweaks along the way. I wouldn't count this as the ONLY alien from Alines we'll be seeing. My guess is that Indy is right about this alien being set as is. But that pjam is also right that Hot Toys will listen if they are inundated with e-mails and make the applicable changes -- but in the Alien alien. Then, down the road, rerelease the Aliens alien with the tweaks.

The thing is, they're not including a Ripley. There's no way the PL is going to be more than ED without a figure.

I wouldn't go saying it'll cost $300 yet. When I ordered mine from the rep they had no idea on what the price points would be or even when it'll be ready to be released.

The power loader really needed to be seen in person to appreciate. The hydraulic hoses on the back are incredible. There is a button on it that makes the light on top blink. The hands open and close.

This will be, by far, the 1/6 piece to have for 2007.

You don't get what I'm saying; earlier in this thread, people have been pointing out ways that the sculpt that's been shown at Toy Fair don't match the Aliens version of the creature (http://sideshowcollectors.com/forums/showpost.php?p=346041&postcount=100).

My supposition was that this might be because the details might more closely match (and be based on reference photos of) the AVP2 model which is, of course, inspired by the Aliens-head ridged design.

I'm questioning which set of refereces Hot Toys is using, not how they're marketing it.

Here's some interesting news, courtesy of John AKA Kozin from the OSW forums:

I wouldn't go saying it'll cost $300 yet. When I ordered mine from the rep they had no idea on what the price points would be or even when it'll be ready to be released.

The power loader really needed to be seen in person to appreciate. The hydraulic hoses on the back are incredible. There is a button on it that makes the light on top blink. The hands open and close.

This will be, by far, the 1/6 piece to have for 2007.

Ed-209 was $195, and ED is huge. So i would guess the power loader will be around the same price.

The power loader is up for pre-order at BBTS Hot Toys Power Loader $139.99 (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/menu.aspx?menu=180&company=148).

Not a bad price, considering all the speculation of this thing might go for $250+. It's very tempting for the price.

I noticed Ripley isnt included with the powerloader. Are they going to release another Ripley especially for the powerloader or are we just suppose to use the one thats coming out soon?

I'm hoping they aren't releasing another Ripley as I have this one on order...

Knowing Hot Toys, I'd guess both.

The Ripley we're getting works fine for the PL, strip her jacket and away you go, that's her! Don't see them doing another for Aliens anyway, maybe Alien.

EDIT: Just a heads up, guys. I just heard from my dealer and here's what he said about the bbts P.O., just throwing it out there...

"Brave of them. The wholesale forms are still showing TBD which is not very reassuring and to be honest with you I would rather be correct the first time and be later then be the first to post it and have to change people’s orders."
