I really thought Resurrection was the worst of the films...

And looking at the QTVR of the piece its pretty darn impressive... although in terms of Aliens announcements I'm all about the 1/6 Warrior and Power Loader!!!

It's in the power loader thread. This maquette holds no inteest for me. In fact anything from Alien3 holds no interest for me.

Yeah I'd love to have one! This is also my favorite Alien design. One I think I hear Giger said was closest to his vision.

But it will be too expensive, if only I could win this one from Sideshow (please Sideshow!). :monkey2

And yeah Dave, Alien Resurrection was the worst, Whedon's worst writing aside from the Buffy movie (yes, I know it's not all his fault on both).

Yeah, this is a must own for me as well.... Alien 3 was a decent film, and I know if David Fincher had more time and a script that was nailed down and honed a bit more.... it would have been an amazing movie. The fact that he was able to make it as stylized and intense as it was... is a credit to his talent as a director. The making of this movie was like his own personal Hero's Trial....

As for the design I have always loved it! Very different and the only Alien we ever see that isn't from a human host. I was very impressed by the design and will never forget it. That's why I bought the brown Alien from HT and that is why I will be ordering this one as well..... On Flexpay more than likely, but still.... :lol

Second worst Dave! AvP carries the title of 'worst Alien film ever' in my book! But even if those films are not what they should or could have been, the Aline design remains amazingly pure. I've never seen an "ugly" or pointless Alien so far. Looks like Giger did such a great job when he came up with the concept, that it is virtually impossible to destroy it.
This Alien3 Alien looks fingerlicking good. But I doubt that I'll buy it. Can't tell you why though.

I like the fact that the Maquette's don't have to outdue one another by getting taller and taller. It's cool to see that a pose can be used in scale with the previous maquettes but still conserve some space.

It's not the worst of the films. That would be Resurrection. That ridiculous Alien/human hybrid nonsense. What a horrible creation. (Also the worst use of Brad Dourif that I can remember in his history in film.)

Actually, AVP would be considered the worst, if one were to count that as part of the series... :monkey4

I don't get this hate for Alien3.
It's miles above A:R or AvP, it has a great cast, brilliant cinematography and at heart a very sad and touching story that revolves around loss and redemption.
I wonder what would've happened if Fincher had got a better script and had more time and power to do things the way he believed they should've been done.

But he didn't... which is exactly why I personally consider this movie to be the weakest of the four. Do I hate this movie.....no, I actually like it. I just don't like it as much as the other three. To me, Aliens was not only the high water point of the series, but it remains one of the best sci fi films I have ever seen.

The hate for Alien 3 is there because of a lot of reasons:

Bad follow up to the incredible ALIENS movie.
They killed off Hicks and Newt...ridiculus.
It was originally going to be Aliens all over again but this time on Earth. The first teaser even hinted at it. What could have been. :(
Lame ending.

Cameron at one point was supposed to direct it but backed out.

For me, it's an ok movie. I too think it's much better than A:R or AVP.

I agree. Alien 3 is a sorely unappreciated masterpiece. I love this film. I like it even more than Aliens. When I was 14 I thought Aliens was the best film ever made but the older I get I see how juvenile the film is. Fun, but juvenile. Alien 3 is more mature and rich in substance. People die. ^^^^^ happens. Alien Resurrection is the putrid turd of the Alien Franchise. I have the box set and want to use this disc as a drink coaster. That film is so awful that words cannot describe it and all I have to say is Newborn Alien and my stomach wretches with vomit. Winnona Ryder was just embarassingly awful. Sigourney was wooden as the clone Ripley. Everything about this film... the direction, the music, the cinematography, the production design, and most of all the putrid Joss Whedon script, should never have seen the light of day. I would rather be forced to watch repeated viewings of Batman & Robin in a straight jacket with my eyelids pryed open than to watch that film ever again.

Poor ALIEN 3....

OK, I am not NEARLY as down on AR as Dave, but I can appreciate his fervor for A3. I hated it when I first saw it, as I, like half of humanity it seems, was so stoked by ALIENS, that to be suddenly shocked into the film that was A3, seemed, at that time, an insult. I think that is how most people still see it.
But...
Like Dave, I grew up.
For one thing, there is this one small hint at what could have been, in ALIENS, at the end....at the very end, of the end credits...
I always liked how after all the stuff was done, even those final ASCAP screen actors guild logos, the works, and the music fades...you can hear the scuttling of a facehugger... in ALIENS. So, why do that? I mean, our heroes in deep cryo-sleep...all is well....Hicks and Newt live....and the sound of a facehugger....Cameron did that.
It is interesting in that it does indeed lead directly into the hell that became Alien 3. As it pretty much is.

I realize now that the movies are about Ripley as much as the Aliens, even though an Alien film could have been made without her of course, but with her character, at least through A3, there is a bleak and somber message.
And it has a LOT to do with Special Order 937 from the first film.

THAT DAMNED COMPANY!!!

So, really, what would another ALIENS clone movie have been anyway? A lot of yadda yadda yadda. And NOT what the franchise really is about. Not to me anyway.
So, there.

I like A3 and feel the art is amazing, and it has every bit as interesting a cast and oneliners and funny stuff and all, as ALiens does. Just not "Marines". That's all. But I'll keep it. It makes me laugh. And it does make for one serious movie.
Love it or hate it, it is not a movie you can ignore. Not entirely. It's more like Carpenter's THE THING, than any of the other Alien movies, and it seems, everyone is ok with that bleak story....

Food for thought. :D

Now, how to get up $$$$$ for this Maq???

Oh, no real comments on AR. Or ALIENS AFTERTHOUGHT....
I actually enjoy it myself. But it seems as removed from the series as is AVP. So, no harm done to me.
Hey, it has ALIENS in it!!!!

abake
02-13-2007, 03:02 PM
Absolutely Les.
With Hicks and Newt alive and well, where else could you go but into Aliens 2?
And it would be very difficult to keep an interesting story with a crippled Hicks and an enervating Newt screaming around. Unless it became a movie about the three of them stuck in a spaceship with an alien on the loose. But then you have Alien 2.
So I think it was a wise decision to kill them off.

Hey, it has ALIENS in it!!!!
thats pretty much my opinion on AR as well.
While it didnt really fit with the series, I enjoyed watching it.

Havent seen A3 in so long I barely even remember it. Need to give it anothr spin.
Even Fincher mentioned in an interview awhile back that he hates the movie. But I dont let other's opinions sway my own... or i try not to.

Plus I completely seperate the Art Direction of a movie from the movie itself. Just cause a movie sucks wont stop me from buying collectibles of bad-ass characters only cause the movie sucked... and that A3 Maquette is indeed bad-ass

To be honest... I'm just not feeling this one! It is not how I remember an ALIEN looking, and I would rather wait for the real thing from Stan Winston Studios! Besides, the Flexpay payments end right at SDCC, so money would be an issue anyway... :rotfl

After reading the blog and seeing that it was sculpted and designed by the same people who worked on the film and who are ex-SWS employees i decided it was too good to pass up. :D

All very well put Les, and that statement is exactly why I think people hate all the other Alien films after Aliens, People wanted to see more of the Marines and they never got it. It's surprising that none have decided to add Colonial Marines or something similar into an Alien or AVP film, since they went so action movie fluff afterwards. And the truth is I wouldn't mind seeing a few movies like that myself, I'd even like to see a Sci-Fi film with the same Colonial Marines that doesn't have the classic Alien in it.

About killing off Newt and Hicks; I liked Hicks and Newt and I wouldn't have minded if they kept them alive in a sequel or two. However when I saw Alien 3 in the theater, the first thing I see is that little girl who may have been a bit annoying at times but you still cared for her, Newt get offed so quick and brutally sent a chill down my spine. I thought it was a brilliant move to just slap the audience who were sitting there expecting an action film just like the last sequel with the death of a child. Nothing is more horrific then that and it quickly set the mood for the rest of the movie taking it back to it's roots, horror. Not all of it was successful but for the most part I thought it was good.

Brilliant move indeed. Alien 3 makes an unexpected left turn and the heroes are killed and Ripley's luck finally runs out and fate catches up to her. Alien 3 is the PERFECT conclusion to one of the greatest trilogies of motion pictures ever filmed. Alien 4 should have began with entirely NEW characters in different situations. They could have done the Earth War that was originally promised by Alien 3's theatrical teaser trailer with the tag-line "On Earth, EVERYONE can hear you scream" which was part of the reason why so many people were let down when they saw it. Unfortunately, at the time, CGI was still in its infancy so the idea of doing a full-scale Alien invasion (heh heh) would have been monetarily impractical for them to conceive without the Cameron low-budget trickery of fooling the audience into believing there are more Aliens onscreen than there really are. I think he had 6 full-sized Aliens that were shot in different angles and through careful editing made it look like swarms were coming out of the walls. Today, this would be very easy to make as we have seen a taste of it in AVP.

Newt and Hicks are alive and well, just not in that "imagined" scene, that's the way I look at it anyway. :D

Alien and Aliens are the only Alien films that count with me, the rest you can put in their own boxed set... but that's just me. :D :lol

But I didn't.

There's one significant difference with this piece, though: it's the first FULL Alien sculpt in polystone form Sideshow's yet released.

All the others were busts of one kind or another.

They're doing a 1/4 scale Alien and it's from the worst of the films?

Discuss...
hardly... i think Fincher's work could possibly be the best after the first one. it may not have been as exciting as Aliens, but it was certainly heavier on subtextual elements. it had depth of human drama, conflict and emotions. people just didn't like it because of the dark and depressing tone of the film.

im still looking forward to it!! It looks really freakin cool and Im sure in person it will absolutly BAD**S!! I have always liked the look of the dog alien althought the Alien Warrior was the best in the series - the only one I did not like too much were the ones in Alien Ressurection - that movie was a disgrace to the franchise!!
Someone please do ALIEN 5 - JAMES CAMERON!!! RIDLEY SCOTT!!! WHERE ARE YOOOOUU!!!!

I do wish the ES was a little lower but I think 500 is still ok.
