Just one word... YES!!!

Well After seeing the new marvel diorama I told myself... "why did you sold the X-men Vs sentinel ex diorama?"... I hadn't seen the last item yet and as soon as I have seen that new Star Wars announcement... yes!!!:chew

In the future we'll surely get The Emperor with force lightening against Luke, with Vader watching diorama...:emperor

I know I'll order it. I just wonder if there will be an exclusive version. There are so many great dio's they could do. I wish the scale was 1/7 instead of 1/9 but we'll see how it looks when they put it up later this week.

This is going to really do ending my GG collecting. Other than a few more things I won't be getting much with this new line coming on top of the LOTR stuff.

RoboDad
02-10-2007, 07:35 PM
Now that's a diorama I can see myself buying!

I think the classic poster pose of the two of them with saber blades crossed might have been better, but this one looks pretty good too. And the base (from the shot we can see) looks perfect.

Although, I just thought of something. Between this and the Crack of Doom dio, does anyone else notice a slight preoccupation at Sideshow with lava-themed pieces? ;)

Add Mace vs Sidious, Palpatine vs. Luke, Luke vs Vader (Ep 5 & 6), Obi-Wan vs. Grievous, Rancor and Luke, Leia killing off Jabba and about a bagillion others to my wants list, but then again, it's also about execution and selection of the moments, I wasn't too happy with the execution of the Luke Yoda PF but the concept was nice, so some of these I make like on paper but seeing them may not be what I'd want to represent the moment, but the cool part is this should be kinda like Unleashed figures but with a strong representation of the movie appearance.

Looks great!!

I'll be getting these for sure. They are a bit small but that's fine by me. It'll make them much cheaper and since they are smaller I'll have enough room for all of them.

The only downside from this announcement is that I'll probably won't collect the LOTR dios. I just don't have enough room or money for that matter for both. I might pick up a select few LOTR dios but I certainly won't be getting them all.

Can't wait to see the Ewoks vs. Biker Scout dio. :monkey5

I thought the Marvel Dioramas were approximately 1/7th as well. They can't be 1/9th because Captain America is about 11" tall. If the scale was 1/9th his actual height would be over 8 feet so it has to be closer to 1/7th which puts him just over 6'.

The Mike
02-10-2007, 09:20 PM
If this line has the same great sculpting as the Frodo/Gollum piece I can't resist. That price range though is a large one so it'll be pick and choose with these. I'm definitely in for this one and if they make an ANH Obi-Wan/Vader piece. If they did a Luke/Slave Leia piece about to jump off the Sail Barge I'd buy that too but nothing else is a definite. I like this idea alot though...

Luke/Slave Leia piece about to jump off the Sail Barge

Add that to my list lol. I'm frightened by this line the more I think about it. There are many Star Wars characters that just aren't amazing or have much screen time so that affects the 1/6 line, BUT, there are so many moments that could make for great frozen in time dioramas, this line could be endless, but my wallet is not, what to do what to do.

The Mike
02-10-2007, 09:26 PM
There is a few I'd like. The "Move Along" scene with the Landspeeder. The Compactor scene. The Han about to lower into Carbonite chamber scene. The Utapau Clones vs Droids, complete with soldier on top of droid firing downwards. The possibilities are really vast here...

With Premium Format satisfying my desire for awesome sculpts in a nice scale with mixed media and now SW dioramas displaying conflicts and scenes with multiple characters I can't see myself getting more than 3-4 more 1/6 scale figures.

Imagine dioramas of:

Vader reaching out to Luke in Cloud City

Luke and Yoda with even more Dagobah

Luke on a Tauntaun

Jabba's palace (*this* Jabba I *will* get, and it'll probably be the only Jabba setup SS will offer with a decent Slave Leia)

The Sarlacc Pit with Desert Skiff

Duel of the Fates

Yoda vs. Sidious

Luke vs. the Rancor

Obi-Wan on Boga

The Gungan battle (you bet I want this)

Carbon Freezing Chamber!!!!

Ewok Celebration

And so many more.

I wish the scale was 1/7 instead of 1/9 but we'll see how it looks when they put it up later this week.

What surprised me about this announcement is the fact that Gentle Giant has the license to produce 1:7 scale multi-character dioramas. I would assume that Sideshow has to stick pretty close to the 1:9 scale or risk stepping on GG's license. Scale/size can be important distinctions when it comes to each company's piece of the Star Wars licensing pie.

If there is any justice. The Cloud City duel may not be as climactic as the one in ROTJ, but I think that it is much more iconic, what with the "I am your father" moment. The first two releases in this line should be the two most memorable and representative duels in each triogy.

(Ben VS. Vader on the Death Star shouldn't be too far behind.)

that looks like a really great idea for a line. And the piece itself looks fabulous. I'm still going to go ahead and make myself the base for my own 12" figures like I was going to (they stole my idea the bastards! :lol ) but considering how good this piece looks, I'm glad everyone's going to get the opportunity to buy this.

Lots of opportunities too considering how many vs. situations there are in the films. These will be a great line of statues i think.

I am so happy about this announcement. I have always loved statues better than action figures. I think the PFs are great but the mixed media still seems a bit different to me. The dioramas give you more than just a statue because action and conflict can be better displayed. This first one looks great and I cannot wait to see more. I would love to have all of them but again price will dictate. Trev did such a great job on this and the new LOTR diorama.

My spouse would like for SS to quit developing new products. :lol

I'll get a few. Not this 1, but Luke and Vader from either ESB or ROTJ. I think for ROTJ they should do Vader holding Palpatine over the pit getting shocked, that way NOT to overkill the Luke/Vader battle (not that I think there's such a thing) and than for ROTJ Luke have him fending off Boba Fett on the skiff.

there's a sliver of a scene when Anakin back flips onto the platform. that's where this is drawn from. I think once you see a few more angles, you'll get a better feel for their dynamic. my favorite angle for Obi-Wan and Anakin wasn't photographed by the rebelscum guys, but you'll likely see those later, or in a Quicktime rotation.

the design drawings were artworks on their own. you couldn't hope for better control art. I imagine the decision to shy away from saber clashing is that we'll see that many times in other pieces. (that's purely speculative, as a fan, not insider information! I really don't have any little insider clues! :D)

Anakin's force jump is jostling the platform as Obi-Wan begins his next swoosh (while also regaining posture)

maybe someday down the line you'll see the design drawing in a production blog. it really should be shared. neat work.

Trev

Trev you did a great job capturing them, and I'm sure most fans will recognize the exact moment this was based on, I know I did at least. Even though I might have wanted to see saber's clashing, in a way this captures their emotional differences, you see Obi-Wan taking the backing off stance of not wanting to take down his brother, but you see Anakin poised to strike mercilessly at his former master, so the piece has the great value of capturing the hearts of the two exactly how they were throughout the duel.

Being that Indy is LFL and LFL is seeing great success in joining with Sideshow for products, I'm sure at some point Indy will be handy over to them for merchandise, I can't imagine LFL not looking at what Sideshow has done already with SW and thinking this company is great and the direction to take merchandising for high end items.

That just reminded me of something I have longed for many years to see Hasbro or someone produce, a diorama of Luke burning his father's body with light up flames. It's not a big action moment, but it is a powerful image to me and I'd love to have that, and beside it, a diorama of the moment Luke first pulls back Vader's mask to see his father for the very first time.

I thought the Marvel Dioramas were approximately 1/7th as well. They can't be 1/9th because Captain America is about 11" tall. If the scale was 1/9th his actual height would be over 8 feet so it has to be closer to 1/7th which puts him just over 6'.

Is Cap really 11 inches tall?? Weird - our measurements on the site must be off (imagine that ;)) because it says the entire thing is 12" tall, including the base and Cap's arms and shield up over his head. Anyway, I could have sworn they were close to 1/9th, at least the Hulk VS Spidey and also the bust dioramas. Anyhoo, I apologise for the mistake if so.

My point was that this is bigger than you're expecting. 8 inches is a nice height for these guys, plus the base is pretty big! :duff

I would expect an exclusive of some sort, the marvel ones have exclusives so why not SW? Does the LOTR have an exclusive? I suppose if it doesn't that rather puts this one up in the air as to whether there will be one or not.

I'm all over this line. Personally though, I'd like to see diorama's covering the "darker" side of SW. Something like Anakin slicing his way through Tusken Raiders w/ a few limbs and heads laying on the base; also, mace standing over the headless body of Jango Fett would be good, and so would Yoda from ROTS when he's yanking his saber from the clonetroopers chest. Qui-Gon getting it in the gut by Maul as Obi-Wan watches is another I'd like to see. I'm excited about this new line though; and, I'm glad I gave up the GG diorama line even more now.

I kind of doubt Lucas would allow that for a figure. This isn't McFarlane your talking about here. Its one thing to show Jango's head / helmet (no blood, no face) rolling along in the movie but to show TR limbs and heads on a base I just can't see.

All of the pictures so far have sold me on this first dio. Hopefully it will order/ship in convenient financial timeframes. :D

Dio I'd like to see for sure: Leia vs Jabba!

Has anyone done that so far? I just see stuff now at least that has Leia in 'slave' pose. Which is quite alright on it's own but I like 'kicking ass and taking names' poses better myself. :lol

This is a must have - love the concept, love the execution. A truly iconic moment to kick off what I hope will be a wide-ranging line. I'm puzzled how Gentle Giant and SS can both do 1:9 scale statues, since that's essentially what GG's diorama line measures out to, but I'll take it! :lol

Maybe GG is 1:8 - I'd have to go measure to be sure.

Or Flexpay it somehow.

It's still worth that money, though. And that's the important thing.

It's interesting comparing fan response to the prices of both the Darkness PF and the Ani/Obi diorama. Very different reactions!!

More people will now want the Darkness because they are charging less than expected, and less people now want the diorama because they are charging more than expected.

Well, at least we know the secondary market should have these for less than $280 at some point.

Seretur
02-11-2007, 09:34 PM
I can totally live with this price point, I've decided.

For one thing, there won't be THAT many dioramas every year.

For another, there will be cheaper ones.

For yet another, this will obviously be the grail of the line.

For yet yet another, the Marvel vs. pieces cost more than this, and their value has just risen and risen. (The Wolvie vs. Sabretooth was $250, for example, and it was about the same size [13.5"], with a much smaller base.)

And finally, I do hope the ES is lower than 1000, at least for the exclusive, if there is one.

EDIT: See, this is what happens when you type for a long time. ES 2000... that's pushing it. And the size is a bit smaller than Dusty said! Oh well. I'm in it.

I'm just blown away by the money of it, at that price, if it sells out you're talking $560,000 on one piece, I sure hope there isnt' a high GP for their items, otherwise I'm really gonna try to get a job there lol.

It is for something like this at that price point, imho. These will not hold any value on the secondary market at $280 with an ES of 2000. In fact, they'll likely depreciate some.

From a marketing perspective, this piece desperately needs a cool exclusive to keep people buying direct from Sideshow instead of heading to retailers to try to get a lower price.

Prediction: If the edition size is truly 2000 and there is no exclusive version, you will be able to get this for under $200 off of the secondary market at some point.

Just like the MR ROTS sabers that originally retailed for $350 that can all be had for $175-225 now.

Value does not exist in a vacuum. $280 for this piece with an ES of 2000 is simply too much.

With the larger base, this is pretty comparable to the Captain America VS. Red Skull piece--which is the same height, costs $20 more, but had an edition size of 600 pieces (plus 450 exclusives) instead of 2000.

I think in a saturated market as right now, the edition size is definitely high. Too high...im not sure, but definitely a bit high.

If there was a dry spell of things to buy, i think the edition size would be fine. So many people are just being forced to pick and choose now more than ever. Myself included.
