Christopher Nolan's 'Memento' to Get Remake - Hollywood Reporter

Memento, Christopher Nolan’s 2000 breakout thriller, is getting remade.

AMBI Pictures, run by Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi, has announced it will finance and produce the remake.

The company has the remake rights due to its acquisition of the library of Exclusive Media Group. The 400-title library also contains such as movies as Cruel Intentions, Donnie Darko, Rush and Sliding Doors, among others.

AMBI launched a new $200-million film fund last week, a movie which followed the acquisition of the library, and subsequently greenlit Memento as its latest production.

Memento starred Guy Pearce as a man who is tracking down his wife’s killer but suffers from a unique from of memory loss. The movie told part of its story in reverse order while another storyline was chronological. The two met at the end to devastating effect.

Memento, which was released by Newmarket Films, was nominated for best screenplay and best editing and heralded Nolan as a major talent. It grossed $25.5 million at the domestic box office, qualifying it as an indie hit, but it had an even greater impact on film lovers and moviegoers since its initial release.

In a statement, Bacardi said, “Memento is a masterpiece that leaves audiences guessing not just throughout the film, but long after as well, which is a testament to its daring approach. We intend to stay true to Christopher Nolan’s vision and deliver a memorable movie that is every bit as edgy, iconic and award-worthy as the original. It’s a big responsibility to deliver something that lives up to the mastery of the original, but we are extremely excited and motivated to bring this puzzle back to life and back into the minds of moviegoers.”

It's about time. Memento is terribly dated and the effects are awful.

Or something like that.

Too much Bacardi.

:lol :lol :lol

I am curious to see it actually. Why the heck remake it? What can they do differently?

I heard they are rebooting it so they can integrate it into their upcoming "short term memory loss" shared universe. Jai Courtney has already been cast as Sammy Jenkins.

"The Forgettables!" I believe Tom Hank will reprise his Mr. Short term memory character and Arnold has already expressed interest in reprising Doug Quiad. They are still waiting on Matt Damon though.

Variety just posted that they also acquired the rights to that one Seinfeld episode that was told in reverse and will be bringing it to the big screen as Part 1 of a planned trilogy.

G'night, Jugdish!

“‘Memento’ has been consistently ranked as one of the best films of its decade. People who’ve seen ‘Memento’ 10 times still feel they need to see it one more time,” Iervolino said. “This is a quality that we feel really supports and justifies a remake. The bar is set high thanks to the brilliance or Christopher Nolan, but we wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Dumb, dumb, dumb. People want to watch the Nolan film over and over again, not an inevitably-to-be-inferior remake. Ugh. :slap

Jeez...insert obligatory "Hollywood is creatively bankrupt" comment.

On a sort of related note, wasn't there an "Easter Egg" on one of the Memento DVDs/Blu-Ray where you can actually watch the film in order? I know it would lessen the impact of the film, but I was kind of curious if anyone actually saw it this way.
