View Full Version : Signature banners are in danger of being deleted!

Signature banners are getting out of hand again - Here are the rules for signatures from the FAQ.
Please limit your signature to 3 lines of text or a SINGLE image no larger than 150 pixels high x 500 pixels long.
And I would add that .gif images are discouraged - some poor souls are still on dial up. There's nothing more frustrating than waiting for a post that takes 2 mins. to load and only says "^^^^^* yea!"

Mine is 500 x 125. Is it ok if I have text in it too?
EDIT: Gifs in avatar ok???

And here we have the reason for this thread.

Couldn't agree more. Sometimes its hard to find the response text in all the silly advertising.
well...i'm off to the civil war sig thread to look for a new sig :lol

Your's is fine King - but DDs? Not so much. Gifs are okay both places, but keep the file size, way, way down.

And here we have the reason for this thread.
Yeah and I just knew when I woke up this morning that the other DD was gonna jump all over the Kurgans for their ass-kicking new banners. Always the party poopers. Well if file size is the problem, I'll just dither them down when I get home. Problem solved but the banner stays.

So what your saying is mine is too large? Poor Boromir, he doesn't get any respect. :monkey2
One more point, if you are on dial-up, I would strongly suggest you disable sigs in your control panel. I know I always did when I was still on dial-up. :wave

It is true that those with dial up (or those who just don't want to be hit with all of the flashing/provocative/oversized signatures) can very easily disable them. Some of the users may not be familiar with all of the options in the User CP.

Some people put useful info or links in their sigs (like me), which can't be seen if "view sigs" is disabled. All these blinky, ginormous sigs are annoying, to say the least.

Yes, they can be disabled - but as was pointed out - sometimes there might be something interesting there (although that's most frequently NOT the case).
I can't disable them because I have to see what people are posting. And I hate scrolling through a thread with ginormas sigs.

dekadentdave, seems like I am picking on you today, but I am not.............just trying to help out the Krusade........
Quit trying to make a stand like the one you are taking......
The site has rules for everyone and they are not meant to hurt the Krusade just for that sake.......
The rules were made long before you or I were members of the board, and they were made for a reason.......
It is actions like this that gives the entire Kurgan Krusade a freakin bad name.......
You might watch challenging the Darklord like that, cause he can turn off all your sigs........

The large sigs being an issue for dial up is a valid point. I travel fairly often but I don't always get a hotel with a wireless connection. In that case, if I check the site in the evening, I always turn off sigs in my options before reading the forum. In most cases when they don't have wireless, I'm stuck with a 28K connection because of the hotels antiquated phone systems. I usually make a point of looking for a place with a wireless connection but it doesn't always happen.

Funny pic with caption Boba Fett.
I figure I might as weigh in on this one as well, most likely a buncha others will. :lol Anyways, being on dial up, I'm like Bannister, I wait so long for everything else that waiting for these pages to load isn't that bad. But I think the real point here is that Dave is being nice asking us to police ourselves. He very easily could have just said that he's getting rid of them and locked any thread made to complain about it.
Plus, on a more Kurgan note...do ya'll really need all those sig banners beggin' for a figure, and threatenin' beheadin's? Can't (kan't?) ya'll just get together and divide your favorite ones amongst yourselves? Subtlty (sp?) will get you alot further (farther?) than annoying people.

I think annoying people is the point now. I don't mean that as a slight against the Krusaders, I know they're just having fun with it, but I'm sure they've figured out by now that no Medieval Kurgan figure is coming. It's more about being in the club, and goofing around.

Well Evil, seeing as how that came from a widescreen DVD 720x480, when you reduce it down to the unfortunate 150 pixel legal limit that Dave has imposed for sigs you end up with a cropped 4:3 gif.
Oh and to TheObsoleteMan, ye of little faith, read the banner. If NECA can make one as an 8 in action figure, there is no excuse for Sideshow to not make a 13" Midieval Kurgan. It WILL happen, one way or another.

I completely understand about the poor souls still on dial up; for example, page #2 of this thread has .8 MB of unique signature photos and that isn't even counting avatars, smilies, and board widgets! That equates to 8 minutes to load the page completely at 28.8 speed. I never really used a signature banner before and mostly had text and a smilie or two, but recently I discovered UserBars and was very intrigued by them and have been playing around with some. I just checked my current one and was surprised to see it was 160KB or so! Now that is because is it animated and has 10 individual UserBars in it. If I reduce the number or remove the animation, it would be much lower. Several boards have gone to allowing UserBars only, as they are limited to 350x19 pixels. Doesn't sound like much, but I have seen some amazing things done in such a small space! I am not suggesting Dave only allow UserBars; just that they may be an alternative for some people. Anyway, I think if Dave will give us a guideline on a file size he would find acceptable, I for one will certainly abide by it, and hope others would as well. Just my two cents...

I have DSL and run a 1536 Kbps, so it has never bothered me. I personally love seeing different sigs and animated gifs. I think it adds a lot of "personality" to the user.
I guess for those running on dail up its a bummer, but you cant really limit them to much. Its not fair to the people who are not on dail up. As it is also not fair to dail up users to have 3 or 4 gif sigs.
I think the current limits Dave has set forth in his first post is pretty fair to all involved.

So, this has turned into a "let's bag the people who have broadband.." thread?? :lol :lol
How many people HONESTLY have something "useful" in their sig anyway?? I know of a couple, but, look, if you are complaining about sig size...turn them off.(Not you though, almighty Dave.:bow) ....What do you people on dial-up do on other web pages??? Tell amazon.com to stop using animated gifs etc.:monkey5

I agree as far as width/height, but as for file size, he just said keep them way, way down. What does he consider to be "way, way down"? Are we talking 20KB or less, under 100KB, or just so it doesn't hit 1MB? :rotfl Like I stated, I was surprised to see mine was 160KB which I think is starting to get on the large size; the "beheaded" .gif (and I am not picking on it, just that it is the largest in this thread) is 475KB. A couple of those loaded from different servers and you are pretty much at 1MB to download. I too am on broadband and never even noticed the signature sizes because the pages load pretty much instantly (except for big picture threads!), so I do agree there has to be some give and take between dial up and broadband.
King Darkness
12-15-2006, 09:05 PM
The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 488.3 KB
I think it should be relative to the file size of your avatar. So less than 488 Kb should be good. That really isnt that much. Is it?

488 KB is nearly 1/2 a MB. My first computer had a hard drive that could only hold 40 MB. That's 80 sigs.
But I was going to say 450KB should be the upper limit for the full sig, not just one of the 10 pictures in a sig. At that size I figure most pages will load pretty much instaneously on my connection.
lcummins
12-15-2006, 10:04 PM
Sounds good to me, especially as the "upper" limit. Most will not come close to that size, so a normal page shouldn't be too long at loading.
