View Full Version : Entirely New LOTR Collectible Format?
The Mike

Lord of the Rings will continue to be an important part of the Sideshow product offerings, with an entirely new LOTR collectible format debuting soon.
From their wrap up of 2006, looks like they addressing some of the concerns that have been posted about LOTR going the way of the Highlander but what could this entirely new format be? They have 12", 1/4th, Legendary Scale...Could it be maquettes? Vs. Dioramas? Hopefully its not Bobbleheads....

I'm guessing dioramas.

I'm guessing dioramas.
I have often thought about how cool a Council of Elrond would be or the 9 walking in the line like we see on the side of the nobel one ring hologram

Something else to slow the 12" line. Bah hum-bug.

I would like them to produce a piece based on Sam carrying Frodo up the slopes of Mt. Doom. That was one of the big emotional moments of the trilogy and summed up their relationship so well. While I would prefer this in 1/4 scale in the PF line, maybe they could give it to us in a smaller scale in the new diorama line. (If that's what it is.)
Also, several of us had high hopes for a sculpture depicting the four hobbits at the Grey Havens as a special piece to end the SS/W line. That obviously never happened, but a diorama line could give us that as well.
If they could manage the entire fellowship on the hill, I can't imagine there being too many LOTR fans who wouldn't buy that.
And if they could get into VS. territory, we could see Strider VS. the Ringwraiths at Weathertop, or even Gandalf VS. the Balrog.
A diorama line could give us some pretty fantastic releases...
LOTR Bust-O-Ramas! Or "leg-o-less" dioramas. Sorry that was bad....

A diaroma line like Marvel VS (not busts :monkey3 ) would be great really.
is everything going to be announced in toy fair?
Sideshow is coming with some very good news, I feel it in the air :)

Didn't they say it will be 1/6 scale polystone line? But maybe in Diorama...I hope. :monkey3

Word is.....and don't tell anyone I told you this......is that it's going to be more 1/6 scale polystone statues......but based on the EA computer games 'The Battle For Middle Earth'.
Sideshow are said to be big fans, and if they do do this, I will be elated. We could have:
Eomer on steed
Mouth of Sauron on steed
Faramir
Treebeard
Fountain Guard
Glorfindel
Gloin
King Dain
Arwen on steed
TOM BOMBADIL!!!
Basically, any character you could want except Elendil, Isildur, Gil Galad and Denethor, who do not appear in any of the three games.

I've heard this too. I don't know anything about the game. Never played it, nor do I know what it looks it. But if this means capturing some of the characters in poly (specifically statues) that weren't made during the SS/W days, then I'm all for it.
I agree though that this new line may slow down 12" production, as well as the PF pieces.

I've heard both BATTLE OF MIDDLE EARTH and dioramas and I'm seriously championing dioramas! In a Spooktacular chat, it was mentioned that Dioramas were a future possibility and there was no news of BFME at that time. I'm running with it!
What I would love to see is a Diorama of THE GATES OF MORIA with 1/6 Gandalf, Frodo, and say, how about a Felloship Pippin standing in front of the Doors of Durin (an iconic image from the book that has never been done as a film collectible).
If they can do all the Jabba stuff for SW, they can do this!
One could put Sam & Bill right next to it!
The BFME sounds great too, an Expanded Middle Earth, if you will. BUT I WANT MY DIORAMAS!!!!!!!!!!!

I have always wanted a statue of Frodo and Gandalf when Gandalf first arrives in Hobbiton with his horse and cart.

The press release said that the WOW license involves polystone statues and dioramas. It's not too much of a stretch to imagine them doing the same with a LOTR game. And since they haven't done dioramas before, it qualifies as a new type of LOTR product.

You know, if it IS a bobblehead line, at least we could get the entire Fellowship in their matching classic costumes without waiting too long or spending too much money:

Likewise, I would LOVE to see some "gaps" from the Weta days filled in a *consistent* manner. It's probably too much to hope for matching baseplates, but that would be ideal to me.
A question -- would an "EA" based line follow the film actor likenesses for characters appearing in both? Not familiar much with the game, but I seem to remember some game cut shots featuring actual film footage making the rounds back in the day. So maybe the answer is yes? I hope so. :D

I honestly hope that the new format is not bobble heads. Dioramas would be best new line yet, except I wouldn't know where to put them if they are as big as Marvel dios.

I don't know why I bother to read the newsletter. I totally missed that announcement. You think I would learn to be more observant by now? :o
This news is both exciting and sad. It was easy when there was only Sideshow Weta to deal with. Now there's so many lines I'm going to have to try and be disciplined and not order everything. At least I got off on the right foot and have still resisted the Legendary Bust line.

It's NOT a continuation of the 1/6 statue line. Don't know where that rumor got started. It's a whole new format for LOTR says the article.

Dioramas would be interesting...weathertop would be great and my fav of the line (if it is dios...). My only beef is that this, like people said before, might slow down the 1/6th line.

I think they got several of the 1/6th ready to go and this line might be only a piece here and there type thing.

which is why i cancelled all my pre-orders. sorry, but at this rate i'll be 40 before they get the fellowship completed. im gonna stick with the PF and select 12" figures from LOTR. after aragon my faith in the 12" dropped a little...i will probably pick up the fellowship later but only after they complete it.

.................................................. .and??
I know it was announced, I just forgot where. The announcement was the 'word' i was referring to.
1/6 polystone statues based on the LOTR games from Electronic Arts, such as Battle for Middle Earth II, would yield all of those statues that we didn't get from the first round in the days of Weta. :D We could get our Eomer on Firefoot, our Faramir, etc., etc.

I'd think they'd go as close as possible to the look of the film. I can't see them making any 'cartoony' statues. I think they'll want to make them fit in with the SSW line as much as possible, seeing as they know how many people want to see the line back, but I'm sure they'll have their own stamp of individuality, such as a different base, just so you're sure it's a Sideshow product and not SSW!
And yes there is film footage in the games! But not much.

THX. The confirmation of film footage probably indicates that they have or would secure actor likeness rights. Makes sense to me anyway. :D
I'm sure you're right about the bases. It could be similar to GG's StarWars dioramas vs statues though - the dioramas really have a scenic base, and don't conflict with the black styled bases, as they go for a different effect.

If the dioramas feature some of the most powerful scenes in the movies then this could be the premier line for LOTR. The 12" and PF figures are coming out too slow and people seem to have mixed feelings for all except Lurtz.
