As if there weren't enough quality issues with the Mummy PF, my buddy got his in the other day. It was a really early number. He invited me over to see it. The paint apps. for the sarcophagus were really terrible in areas. Some of the blue triangle heiroglyphics were left unpainted. Slops of gold paint in areas. Now for the real shocker: Finger prints were visible on the bottom piece of the sarcophagus where the lid joins. F-I-N-G-E-R-P-R-I-N-T-S!!! I couldn't believe it. I didn't point these questionable areas out to him, because I didn't want him to think I was ragging on his Mummy...but man, they were bad! I wonder if those fingerprints were actually in the molding of the item, or just in the paint. Either way is bad...but if its only paint, it could be fixed with some skill. Of course, his nose had issues too. Some lumps (intentional sculpt?) and rubbed paint. He seemed happy to have gotten one at all, but I left feeling bad for him because the item had qaulity issues in my humble opinion. I sincerely doubt that there are actually 350 of these that are "sound", unless SSC made a huge percentage of overproduction for this contingency.

While I am impressed with the general appearance and "wow factor" of the Mummy PF, and I think it will probably be the high point of the collection of Universal Monsters PF series.....it is also going to be the most fragile and scarce of the lot. I can see this piece being subject to paint loss over the years, even with the utmost care going into keeping it safe, simply because of how it is engineered with so many painted surfaces touching one another without any felt or cushioning.

Here's a tip...for those of you who bought one. I have a thin strip of the paper like packing foam folded into a couple of "pillows" that I stick behind "Im Ho Tep" at his magnetic contact points. Might help to keep paint loss down. I am really glad mine came in looking as good as it did. A retailer friend of mine also had one at his display area in the "flea" market. His nose was painted an entirely different color than mine. Light gray tone. His fingers were missing some paint, and the urn was scuffed like Bannister's. This could truly be one of SSC's more serious quality control issues. I recommend anyone who is going to send their questionable Mummy back for a replacement do so quickly. One just sold on Ebay for $450.

Yeah, I'm expecting some "Second Chance Offer" or "Warehouse Find" (aka send-backs) of the PF Mummy in the near future. I want to get one, but I don't want to deal with a quality hassle if it ends up to be a bad piece.

Is there going to be a SSE PF Mummy or what? I was hoping it would be for sale during "B&W Friday", but no luck. Maybe SS is going to send all of the returned Mummies back to the factory for a SSE paintjob.

It would be great to hear a comment from a Sideshow official over this matter, even if a mention was made in the newsletter that any "in stock" items would be perused for defects, and an appropriate delay in shipping announced.

When the Uni Monsters start to have issues, it doesn't bode well for other items. This line is Sideshows hallmark. What's going on?

That a few have issues is inevitable, but even if only a few have had issues, I am getting nervous that the one I have reserved through my dealer may not be able to be replaced. I am hoping it gets here before Christmas, if not it may be two months before I even get to see it. What then?

It doesn't take much for a scare like this to spread. Someone, anyone, everyone, post the good news if you have any. This monster is scaring me. :mummy

i can't wait to see what the variant will look like ????

I keep checking mine out but can't see anything wrong. Its a great piece, one of the favorites of my collection.

I was very close to getting back into the monsters with the mummy being so fantastic and the bride making an entrance. It's such a hard decision whether to get the mummy, but if I go on the waitlist, I worry I will get one of the returned products and I will have the hassle of going back and forth. Saw a nice one at the comic shop, but they marked it up some and then I will have to pay sales tax. Very expensive, but I think I like this PF more than Luke with Yoda and would rather have the mummy.

I was fortunate and got a great one. Good ones are out there. You just have to find them. There are only 350 of these out there... so I would pick one up if you are able. A couple have sold on Ebay for $450 plus shipping.

Just opened mine and was prepared for the worst. I was a bit surprised at all the unwrapping necessary for my Mummy, but he's perfect as far as I can see. Considering all the packaging, it's difficult to imagine how any scratches could occur.

Yeah, with all the padding covering the Mummy, there really shouldn't be any problems.

Of course after unwrapping and his head snapping to the back of the sarcophagus by that strong magnet, the back of his head is scratched. Given the magnets though I can't see a way to avoid that.

I'd love to see a blog entry on his this figure was created. Is he fully sculpted or are the bandages added after? If sculpted it's really amazingly well done.

Really. The magnet on mine isn't that strong. It is basically strong enough to keep him there but not strong enough to pull the figure from me.

That's the way mine is too. Barely strong enough to hold it there.

My magnets practically pull the thing out of my hands when it gets close enough to the contact point. I recommend anyone who has one of these to cut a small piece of foam or an old dark colored tee shirt and make a small folded "pillow" between the contact points on the sarcophagus and the Mummy himself. It will help prevent any future damages... and if you do it just right, it's not visible. It will pay to know how to mix paint with this piece in the future. I can see this thing picking up scratches over the life of the item.

Another thought I had was to make cloth strips of bandages and paint them to match the Mummy. Then just drape the bandages over his shoulders to keep him from scratching up. It also may actually help the appearance of the piece as dangling rotted bandages are sorely lacking from a PF that is entirely sculpted. Still, with all of the problems assocaited with it, its probably the best Mummy piece I have seen next to the Ardeth Bey bust that SSC did. Never in my wildest imaginings did I ever think my "precious", the Universal Monsters, would ever get this kind of treatment.

My Magnets are strong. I have problems trying to open the Sarcophagus. The Mummy slams to the Sarcophagus, the "pillow" idea is a must.

Well I have a big showcase that I keep all My Sideshow 12inch and PFs in. So I will not be handling mine and it keeps them safe. The Mummy is in his home. The Lights I installed in the showcase are LED tubes, they give off very little heat, and I believe they will not fade paint or fabric as florecencent tubes and other light sources do. See below. Note The Hawthorne Universal halloween village on top of the case.

Thank you for the compliment! I hope in the future to build or have built two large showcases on both sides of my fire place. These would be 46inches wide by 21 inches deep and 7feet High. This I hope would be more than enough room for now to display everything, and not have it so crowded together. But as usual it all costs money. Anybody have any extra their not using.:rotfl

My Mummy had weak magnets in the figure so no "snapping" him into the sarcophagus. On the other hand, the two halves of the sarcophagus itself snapped together very strongly and were actually hard to get open again. I had to send him back for a replacement primarily because there was something broken, rattling around inside the lower half of the sarcophagus; I think it might have been one of the magnets broken in several pieces...

You know, mine had something rattling around as well, but I didn't mention it since I already had the other problem. I still haven't sent mine back yet.

There was something rattling around in my sarcophagus too. I didn't give it much thought since the piece looked great and the magnets worked just good enough to get the job done.
