Nice to see someone is finally giving her some attention. The rooted hair is a little disapointing (I prefer sculpted) but still she looks promising. Hopefully they've sorted out the loose joint problems the Witch-King has.

She'll be one of my most anticipated figures of the year. Can't wait to see the final sculpt. I perfer sculpted hair over rooted too but rooted may work better with the helemt.

Maybe we should clarify that is a promo shot of the real Miranda Otto (see The Lord of the Rings Weapons and Warfare book).

I believe that picture of her is used in a lot of promotional material. I just to it for what it is a reference picture of outfit and look they are going for.

I'm curious to see how Asmus tackles the chain mail. Molded rubber? A loose-knit fabric? (I assume it won't be actual chain mail. That would be far too expensive for this line, I'd imagine.)

I've seen a few custom that used real chain mail-would be hard to mass produce at a low cost but looks great.

I think what Art Figures did for the chain mail of King Aragorn looks pretty good. Don't know how it would look in brown though.

You have to love the fact that Asmus is really trying to interact with fans. For being such a small company (in comparrision to Hot Toys and Sideshow) they are really going to great lengths to interact with us. It makes me want to root for them even more. Of course it helps that they have my favorite liscence too.

1/6 Chain Mail is hard. I think the Art King (Aragorn) version look pretty good for what is is. I can't inmagine the cost of doing 1/6 chain mail. The good thing is if they find a design/material that works they can probably use it for a lot of figures.

Did the Art figure use fabric? I've never seen the figure up close and I can't quite tell from the pictures.

I believe Kaustic Plastic and ACI Toys have done some 1/6 scale chain mail in real metal, but I'm not sure what they charged for those figures. Probably a ton.

While I would be thrilled if Asmus used real chain mail, I wouldn't be opposed to doing a sculpted, flexible material. As long as it looks good.

I should be ashamed to admit this but my Art Figures Aragorn is still in the box. IIRC the chain mail is fabric.

Lol. Mine is too. The figure is a pretty solid figure overall but the body is a little too firgid, sculpt a little too off and a lot of the outfit is really delicate so he stays in the box. All of the Sideshow figures even Faramir are on display although Darren has customized my Aragorns and Legolas. I even have a Toy Biz Gimli with a Sideshow Lothlorien cloak. The Witch King is out numbered and needs Gothmog pronto! I feel like emailing bbts for a date. :monkey3

It's good they're starting with Eowyn for Rohan armors. It's pretty simple and plain, so they can make some experiments on colors, materials and weathering too. Once they achieve that, they can start with the serious business: Eomer and Theoden.

Neet. But i do hope tehy do some alternate heads.

A rooted hair.
A sculpted hair
Head with helmet on.

Rooted hair is failsauce.

roguebaron

Unless they pull off some fantastic rooted hair, i think i'd rather see sculpted as well. Either way, she'll probably be my first order from them.

nexus
02-16-2014, 08:14 AM
I think rooted hair can look better if done right, but can easily fall prey to the Barbie syndrome especially in mass production. Swap-out hair would be cheaper than swap out heads. Kumik is doing hair swap-out appliances for color changing, but same could easily hold true for sculpted vs. faux real.

Travis Baumann
03-06-2014, 03:13 PM
I definitely vote for rooted hair. It is way more dynamic... sculpted hair looks very toy like and almost oily. I think Hot Toys has been doing rooted hair very well now for some time and even some of my Triad figures have really good rooted hair (Jade Van Helsing for one).

I think they can pull off a rooted hair that works and maybe even fit a helmet all in one go but I would settle for two portraits, one helmeted before her reveal to the Witch King and then one with quality rooted hair. If their proto-types fail miserably than sculpted hair is preferable over terrible rooted hair but only as a last resort would I want to go this route.

After a number of good Hot Toys releases with rooted hair, I felt a bit disappointed by Baroness' sculpted hair, it seemed like a big chunk of soft plastic and makes her look toyish, still a cool figure but not as cool as she could be.

lerath666
03-07-2014, 12:12 PM
Completely disagree. Baroness is the first female figure i've recieved in a while i haven't immediatly regretted buying, and comtenplated returning.

Terrific start! Looking very forward to this one! Thank you for letting us have a peek behind the curtain!

As for feedback ... hmm ...

Maybe her jawline could be a TINY bit sharper? And her nose a bit stronger? Maybe a bit more definition in her chin? Miranda Otto has such great bone structure. She has a lot of planes and angles in her face. This sculpt may be just a bit too rounded thus far.

But I'm really struggling to find things to nit-pick. Very nice work!

I would buy this figure if you stopped right there!

Good start. Might suggest a slightly deeper cleft on the chin, and perhaps your sculptor should look again at the bridge of the nose.

A full Fell Beast head? You know how big that would be?

Just request a full scale Fell beast for yourself and it can be the 'Rancor' of LOTR.

Personally, I'd rather have some more Orc heads -- distinctive ones that will never get full-figure treatment but are highly recognizable (like Murgash or the guy behind Guritz below). I could buy another Guritz or Gothmog and mix-and-match the armor to build an Orc army.

I agree about the bridge of the nose and the upper lip. The eventual placement of the hairline will be important. I like the sculptor's attention to the eyebrows -- she seems to use makeup and plucking to "raise" them, but the sculpt captures the actual area well, and paint can do the rest.

Great sculpt! My comment would be on the nose-eye connection area - pits under the eyes near the nose should be more pronounced.

First - thanks for the exclusive! And it's great you put it next to reference photos - I wish more early reveals were done that way.

There are certain portraits that are tougher than others - Vigo, Shatner, H. Ford - and just about ANY beautiful woman. But it does look like an excellent start.

While I would love to get many of the Asmus LOTR characters, I can't justify it financially (too many MCU figures I'm wanting) - Eowyn, however, will be my exception purchase (with a Thorin, if they ever make Hobbit trilogy figures). I've wanted an awesome Eowyn figure for years. She's my favorite LOTR character and she's been under -represented.

Yeah, Eowyn isn't a strong collectible choice, but somehow we felt that we must stay loyal to our collectors.
If we make only the hot characters, that would be so selfish and disrespectful to them.

That being said Eowyn is the only female I have any interest in buying from this line. I don't mind Arwen in the films, but she was no where near as interesting as the other characters and certainly not someone I would buy an expensive collectible figure of. Definitely an easy pass.

I am on the other side with this one. If there was only going to be one female character in my entire collection across all properties I would pick Eowyn before any other. I totally disagree. Kate looked awesome as Galadriel and the character dates back to the Similarion (one of the few characters we get to meet through the trilogy that even shows up in it). I for one am up for every single female of any race that shows up in the films being made and that goes triple for any elf, even one of the unnamed forest elves will be fine by me.

Galadriel is a central character in Tolkien's universe ,she was born before the creation of the sun and moon, she even shunned Feanor , plus she is a ring-bearer.
Cate blanchett had so much screen presence, she dominated the part !
Eowyn looks amazing in the preview, and I'd sure support strong female characters ;) There aren't many in Tolkien's works

We all joke Eowyn is a she-warrior,
like Xena... She isn't a pretty girl like Arwen, Galadriel, Tauriel .
so we can play around with armor and weapons too.

I see Tauriel to have potential with her Elfish equipment too.
I mean, when it comes to action figure, you will always wanting accessories to boost contents, right?

And I think Galadriel will face this problem, there is hardly any accessory for her in the film.
Arwen may be better, worse case we can give her a Frodo.... lol

The chainmail does look like material, but it looks very good. My only problem is how blond the hair is. I'm all for rooted hair for this character, but if there's a way to get a little more variation in the color it would look more natural.

Very nice, I like her a lot...the outfit is great! If we must go nitpicky the only thing that is missing is the small piece of mail on the back of the helm. The rest could be more weathered (the cape in particular) or a bit longer (the underdress) but it's completely fine for me.

Very nice outfit and accessories, but am I the only one thinking that something is still a little off? Her eyes and mouth are too big and the wrinkles at her cheeks are too deep... although it doesn't help that the rooted hair isn't the right colour, it's too blonde... They are just little details but I will have to pass if they aren't changed.

It is a $20 price creep on bbts' website for her compared to Gandalf but I would think this figure took a lot more research and design plus there appear to be more accessories and a more detailed and involved costume. Hopefully Aragorn falls closer to Gandalf's price but I could also see him sitting around Eowyn's. I just hope it is a good and sturdy body they are using for her or that it is easy to switch her to a different one. Until we see some more stores put her up for pre-order it is hard to tell if $189 is the right price.

superdoug
08-15-2014, 07:21 AM
Also looking at the bbts page for Asmus it looks like they might be working towards a release per quarter. Right now it shows the Ringwraith as 3Q and Eowyn as 4Q. Gandalf appears to be in the process of arriving so he would be 3Q and so would Gurtiz but maybe he was supposed to be 2Q. If Aragorn is 1Q for 2015 I will be happy. 1 figure a quarter is something I should hopefully be able to afford without having to give up all other lines.

Just pre-ordered. I expect these will eventually hit HT pricing. That will be fine as long as Asmus matches or exceeds HT quality (which should also mean improving bodies). This is a "most wanted" line. The main thing for me is that they need to start showing some more of the heavy hitters like Aragorn and no more orcs for the time being. I know MoS in in the works. I want to characters like Gimli, Legolas and Arwen announced or shown as WIPs. Would be nice if the Hobbits came in two-pack or four-pack options.

Preordered as well. Surprised to see this at $189.99 actually. I had guessed it would be more in the $159-$169 range since she should be on the smaller side. But I guess things like the rooted hair and two shields and wearable helmet have pushed the price into Gandalf territory.

She's only $159.95 at Animarket (http://animarket.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=184#.U-4gamOtxCo). However, Animarket requires a deposit and the shipping charges from Animarket (at least to the US) bring the cost up to around the base price at BBTS (shipping with a Pile of Loot would probably keep the price difference to less than $10 shipped). You'll probably get her faster on release though.

Yep, BBTS will have figured that out and maximized their profit without risking lost sales to lower priced overseas vendors. I can live with $10 one way or the other. It's when it gets to $20 or so that I start to feel I should take advantage of the savings because 6-10 of those savings can pay for a full figure.

Remember they said they had bought their own base body for the male figures. I am guessing that is not the case with the female so there is probably some cost added in for that. Also based on Asmus' comments I don't think they anticipate there beign a huge demand for her which also might have added to the price if they made fewer.

To me, the eyes look a little off with the paint app. She doesn't really have any eye makeup on when she's in her armor and there appears to be more distance between her eye and her eyebrow (though that may be fine with less eye makeup). I think her eyebrows are less well-defined close to her nose and maybe don't curve down as much, too. But it's hard to tell for certain based on the reference images I've looked at.

Just my 2 cents.

It's my first order with them but I've always heard good things about them. I can't remember the exact price but when the horse/Nazgul came up they had it priced like 240 or 250 at first. BBTS was very fair with the first LOTR figure, I think they even reduced the price in a correction (never seen that before). So they won my business.

However, they have not been so generous since then and instead I see their LOTR pricing about $10-$20 higher than everyone else. Their Nazgul+Steed is $300. So I may start looking for a new relationship with a better priced dealer.

I'm not going to pretend to know what it takes to run an online business. I'm sure there are all sorts of pains they have to deal with. I just know that I've seen these figures at several different dealers 10 to 20 dollars or more less. I'll save the money when I can.

same here. I think it looks pretty darn spot on. I didn't even like the character all that much but I'm tempted just by how good it looks.

Eowyn is looking just fantastic. Agree w/ shrinking those iris' down a tad. Ordered through Big Bad for the moment. I will not be suprised if they announce a price adjustment on this (as has occured with several of their other preorder products).

I'm going to to do the same. I wouldn't be surprised if they do adjust the price. However, I don't think they have adjusted the rider and steed set yet. However, they could once it gets closer to being released. So we will have to see.

I think you both are very optimistic. If they haven't changed the price yet and haven't lost preorders yet, why would they adjust the price?

BBTS has price adjusted at least 5 figures which I had already preordered in the last several months. As an aside, they raised the price of Firefly Mal but kept my preorder at original price (about $20 less). Great service. Note to BBTS: please price adjust Asmus rider+ steed!

I definitely see Miranda Otto in the sculpt, and the whole set up brings me back to the scene from the movie.
The hair, I believe will need some personal adjusting, but it looks great inside the helmet.
What I would appreciate is a little less make-up on the eyes, Miranda looks very pale

This seems to be the new price range for licensed figures - Star Ace Harry Potter is in the same ballpark and is also a Warner Bros. license.

I'm curious about that; be nice to know how much it costs to acquire a license on average.

Rooted hair actually works favorably for this one, especially with being able to put the helmet on and off. I think it could look really nice on display with the Witch King. What is the chain mail made of on this one?

Think no more. Tyrion is a fad. LOTR is forever.

I feel that way about many TV based merchandise. However I feel like a Tyrion is too fun to pass up on. I just wish it was a rendition of him with the scar on his face.

I'm still bent out of shape about the cross-eyed look on the frontal head shot. It doesn't look to be the same way in the three-quarters view. I wonder if there was an adjustment in production between shots?

I sincerely do want this figure, but $189.99 from BBTS is just a bit too much for me. Maybe if she came with another outfit? (Yes, I'm a girl. Don't judge me.)

Always nice to see a few women in the high end figure trade. I agree though, that 189.00 price tag easily $200 after shipping is hard to live with for me to. I have the witch king so this should be a no brainer, but idk. I just haven't seen anything from this company yet that justifies paying the same price as I would from a more distinguished company. I knew Asmus would raise their prices eventually but this figure despite whatever it may cost to develop and produce does not look a cent over $160.00 to me.

Really liking the proportions. Narrower hips, longer torso ... is there any chance we could see some pictures of it with all of the Witch King clothes and gear?

Because the body is ordered from another brand, so we will order the same amount as our Eowyn. But don't worry, all Eowyn comes with a Morgul Lord body.

Yeah def happy about the replacement body. It's nice to see a high end figure company directly address a mistake. It was enough to take me off the fence, I preordered a few hours ago. This figure was about $20 over priced in my mind if u went thru bbts, so I think we are paying for it. But forget complaining I'm just happy to have Eowyn and a better witch king

If asmus keeps up their current business practices, I for see them building a very loyal fan base. Plus LOTR practically sells itself.

Hardest part for me was remembering the order of putting back ALL those layers of tattared fabric. The armor pieces notably the hinged parts are quite fragile as well and broke a couple**And that's why I keep super glue always within my reach.

I don't think Asmus guaranteed the replacement body with Eowyn, did they? He said they were trying to make that happen, probably because its the last figure to be released in 2014. I don't expect we'll get her in the states before Feb 2015.
