:yess:Hooray for the first entry of the White Wizzard and the first human portrait from their LotR line! Thanks for posting!

Realistic sculpting and painting of human characters' faces will be crucial for the line and I'm happy and somewhat relieved that Asmus seem to be on a good way here!

Damn, he's going to come with a horse?

The horse is a smart approach for them. They can use the same basic sculpt and adjust paints and softgoods and charge us much more to get a new figure. Now GTW on the horse will infuriate people i think. MOS needs his steed. I could see pairing Eomer on the horse as making total sense, plus a mounted wraith.

Asmus has got to up their game for Gandalf.
The type of less than stellar paint apps and weathering they got away with on the Witch King won't do for Gandalf.
I'll have to wait for in hand pics to decide on this one, although he's the perfect companion piece to the WK.

Wonder if that means we'll be seeing more pics in a day or two or if they won't be shown until Dec. 15 like the date on the picture?

This is a very big leap for Asmus. More realistic, less caricature than their previous efforts... which is a must for this line. Whether it looks exactly like the actor playing Gandalf or not, well, we will just have to wait and see.

Okay, I'm game. Gandalf is already looking amazing. Please let this line look great. And as importantly, let it be a prolific line with a strong representation of the characters including of course the core Fellowship, and also the Elves, Hobbits, Wizards, Men, Orcs, etc. This could catapult Asmus to the next level.

While I don't have any plans to let go of the Sideshow PF line, if Asmus's line comes together as I'm hoping, I won't be as worried about when Sideshow will make Gimli, Arwen and Sarumon.

He did have a rounded Santa beard in some scenes though, maybe those scenes were the ones copied by the sculptor. I prefer the more raggedy and tapered version personally, but it's a great sculpt overall.

I agree, the stitching detail is awesome, but way too dark. On the real costume they are almost white. If they fix it or not... it doesn't matter I am all aboard!

So this orc head... do you think that future figures will come with various parts to assemble your own full character?

I need to think long and hard about if I want to branch my 1/6 collection into a LOTR direction. I bought the witch king, which I love! If Asmus keeps this up I may just keep on buying.

Sachiel
12-20-2013, 06:57 AM
I noticed the cloak is missing the pattern on the edges in the front.

Add that, fix the color of the stitching on the vest, and lighten the hair and the figure will look even better.

hoodonit00
12-20-2013, 07:08 AM
I don't give a damn if the stitching is a little dark. But I'm thinking it's probably darker because at 1/6th. scale the detail would be lost if it was "correct". The smaller you get the more sharp the contrast to keep things from all blending together.

The Chev

"a little dark" :lol The actual costume is no where near that dark.

There are lighter colors they could use if the texture showing up at 1:6 is an issue (it shouldn't be with that amount of stitching). They didn't need to go that dark.

Of coarse it could be something they did just for the prototype and they'll change it in production.

:exactly: These figures are looking great. Witch-King despite it's problems was a very well done figure. Gothmog looks awesome, so does Gandalf. WE need to support this line so we get more characters.

Also, the prices are pretty good on these provided that they do not rise too much.

I'm hoping for a Sauron 1/6.

This turned out great, really nice looking figure. It should make for a nice companion piece to Gandalf the Grey.

I prefer Gandalf the Grey, but Sideshow knocked that out of the park. He was/is great. It makes perfect sense to get Gandalf the white out there. I like that Amus seems to be filling the void that Sideshow left hanging with Orcs, Villains and new Heroes. This Gandalf can actually face off against the likes of the Witchking now.

For the look, accessories (love the decapitated Orc head) and price, there should be no complaints. This guy is solid.

I never got into the Sideshow game when the LOTR figures came out. So for that reason I don't want to buy an older figure to get Gandalf the grey, especially since it won't even come close to the quality of the Asmus version. superdoug

THe sideshow figures always took a huge hit with the paint apps. In my opinion the sculpts were in the decent to good range but the paint apps would always bring them down. At the time of his release Gandalf was probably one of the best figures Sideshow had ever done as far as pulling off a complete figure and if you compare him to the sculpt details of Hot Toys figures at the time he wasn't too far off. If Sideshow had put him on a HT body and had Hot Toys paint Gandalf's head sculpt he could have passed for a Hot Toys product.

The new scuplt shows a lot more fine detail and wrinkles but remember this is a prototype, we don't know how much of the detail will carry over to the production and how well the paint apps will be.

Constantly amazes me in this hobby that 2 people can look at the same thing and come up with view points 180 degrees apart. Of course you are entitled to your opinion but to me the Asmus headsculpt as it is is much closer to McKellan than the SST one. Cheers though.

As are you. The nose looks like McKellen's, and he's got a lot of wrinkles, but. . .I'm not seeing much of McKellen at all in the eyes or facial structure. Neither one is great, but the SSC one looks more like the actor to me, when you can look past the paint.

The details on the droopiness is definitely better with this new one. The detail in general seems much better, though we've only seen the prototype. I think it hints at him, but looks more like a caricature of McKellen than a realistic version of the guy.

In any case, I'm just a casual observer and not a LOTR expert, so I'm OK with my opinion not meshing with the consensus. It just struck me when I saw this on BBTS that the likeness was a miss.

I don't even know how to take that. In my experience "concept only" is normally ideas, outlines, sketches and maybe 3D modeling on the computer. "Concept only" makes me think they haven't cost this out yet or they borrowed somebody's homemade sculpt and outfit to see what they would like theirs to look like in the end. Hopefully its something that is lost in translation and it really means "prototype" and "pending approval".

So far I am happy and excited to see what Asmus does with this whole line so I am not goign to worry about things like this yet.

Great McKellen likenes, but overall sculpt... The anatomy is atrocious, another case of "head flattened laterally".
Also hair & beard don't look as detailed & well painted as the face.

Great McKellen likenes, but overall sculpt... The anatomy is atrocious, another case of "head flattened laterally".
Also hair & beard don't look as detailed & well painted as the face.

Lining on the vest is poorly made and... NOT white for some mystical reason.

Fixing these issues shouldn't be a problem for AT, I'll w8 and see.

Asmus seems to actually listen to collectors, so there's hope.

The beard is off because it's too neat. They wouldn't be able to make it less bulky. The hair is from RotK.

Yeah, to be honest, I'm pleasantly surprised. This is honestly one of the better sculpts I've seen. I understand the beard is a bit rounded off when it should be pointed, but as far as likeness and realism, the paintwork on the face. . . it's a very well done head.

If you look on all the pics in small print it says "concept only". That's what worries me.

Actually,
the phrase "Concept Only" was demanded to add on by the license approval. We didn't want to delay the whole process any longer by arguing with the selection of words...

I personally hate it, like most of you said...
what does that even mean...?

This is not a design, we will duplicate THIS prototype,
it will be exactly the same !
I can live with "prototype only" or "not final product"...
but "concept only" don't even make sense here. Sorry.

If what is shown is what we will get you can count on this collector to buy every LOTR figure Asmus releases. I think it looks phenomenol.

Part of what hurt SST figures was they showed a prototype and when the actual product shipped many of them weren't any where near what was shown. That included their other lines as well. To suggest that another company shouldn't release or redo a line because we have Sideshow is completely absurd.

Keep up the good work. I am looking forward to what you can do with this line.

If the product that Asmus releases is even close to what they have shown it blows the SST LOTR line completely out of the water. It's not even close. Other than the body problem with the Witch King they are off to a very good start.

I was referencing the gfx font design on the photos not the sculpt. I should have clarified! Figure design team is working wonders!

That being said I am even fine with the beard as-is. Seeing this sculpt is making me consider building out a LOTR collection! I love the witch king...such a spectacular start...and with my fave character! I will gladly keep ordering. I never got into collecting the sideshow 1/6 LOTR figures.

Gandalf and Gothmog are on order! I cannot wait to see what is next! Very curious about what is in store with the horses.

That is amazing looking!. I'm in the minority here. I like the vest. Although not screen accurate I think it really makes the figure pop. If they make it white you won't even be able to see the detail of it.

ETA. I wonder what's up with not many etailers have this for preorder yet? The last I checked Alter Ego doesn't have it or Monkey On Fire. I'm not up on all the sites but the only sites I've seen have it are BBTS and Cotswold.

hehe, I like all the shaved bits on the desk.

Vantage has it up to for $180. . . really wide range of prices on this one. Kinda backwards of how it was for the Morgul Lord, started off expensive, then got cheaper. Now Gandalf started off at $170, now is getting up to $190.

Not sure if your screen name has any bearing on where you live but BBTS has it for 169.99 which is the cheapest I've seen so that's where I ordered it from.

That would be cool. I really wanted to like the SSC figure, he was loaded down with gear and such, just that thick leather coat and poor paint job. Of course, that was when my futzing skills paled in comparison to what they are now. They are making me regret that I sold my collection off.

I think that's likely. All of the other confirmed/previewed figures from Asmus are RotK designs from either Pelennor Fields or the Black Gate. Maybe Asmus is going to start at the end and work its way back.

If Mouth of Sauron is indeed confirmed, I'd want an Aragorn from that scene as well.

And I'll keep saying it until you all bow to my will - the Sideshow figures are great and the Strider Aragorn looks great (with a repaint).
