I've used something called "Iron-on Nailheads" for similar projects. 1.5mm seems to be the smallest I can find on eBay. I hope his helps.

There's a boardie who sells custom buttons, I think his monicker is The Danger (formerly AdamSmash).
His prices were reasonable at the time he posted I guess $10 for a bunch but don't quote me on that.
