Still no indications of any deterioration on either of mine. My theory on the tiny (6 semi-verified) batch of damaged figures: The accelerated aging and premature cracking is caused by the Styrofoam packaging. Styrofoam can emit ozone and volatiles when exposed to heat. These substances when trapped in the packaging will start a chain reaction that will cause the plasticizer to migrate from plastics and rubber. Don't leave ED (or any other figure for that matter) in a box that will be exposed to heat for any period of time. Exposure to hot summer temperatures and storage conditions could result in irreversible damage in as little as a few days of exposure under the right circumstances.

Krytox (perfluoropolyether) is the answer if you're concerned and haven't already contaminated/damaged ED with Mod Podge, silicone grease or 303. Krytox GPL105 is expensive but it will not react in any negative way with plastics or natural and synthetic elastomers. A tiny amount is all ED will ever need in your lifetime. Look no further if you are serious about long term preservation. No other product comes close to the performance charachteristics that the Krytox range offers.

According to the HT order page this is up at $325, so add the extra slice for resellers and you should get a rough idea on price. Maybe $380ish? I don't know how much more expensive the international resellers are to be honest :dunno:

Eapo_q42
05-30-2013, 02:43 AM
With regards to price, I'd say around $350. Hulk is gonna retail at around $300, and he's 16.5''.

Seeing as how this isn't diecast, and probably has less engineering work going into it than Iron Monger (plus no headsculpt inside) I'd say $350 is probably a good guess for this guy.

Why not? They always keep the monumental numbers for terminator related stuffs. Right now the only terminator figure that everyone wants is a 1/6 endos and T1 police shoot out. It could be both of those, or maybe a kyle reese figure.

Well, they only have 200 thus far, so monumental numbers would only be 1, 100 and 200. 1 and 100 both are from Terminator indeed. But if you'd consider 50 and 150 monumental, 50 was Superman Returns 2-in-1 and Iron Man Mark 2 unleashed, respectively. Can't say there's really a pattern there yet, but surprises from HT are welcome :) If 200 shall be a Terminator figure, then I guess 3 makes the pattern more obvious.

I still collect NECA for figures I want to own but not spend $200 to $300 on (ie. Lost Predators, Prometheus, Aliens). I think I will own this figure via NECA and save the $300 for Batman Returns figures (or figure)

The chair is cool, but not $125 bucks cool. It's surprisingly considerate of HT to offer Robo for sale without it.

S. Griffin
05-30-2013, 09:27 AM
Well, I suppose we have less time now, but unless this thing is coming out this quarter, there should still be time for concerned collectors to contact Hot Toys and ask about/demand a plastic sensor dome on ED to hopefully make some kind of impact on what material they use (unless they're already going with plastic, which I kind of doubt).
It's usually much more effective than just speculating and *****ing about it here.

Man, when i first saw this film, E.D. scared the **** outta me. The camera angle at that specific scene combined growl conveyed he was not a cyborg but a monster.

I'd also add for Robocop his walking sound. The NECA figure had it.

It's amazing how much sounds effects one's perception of a scene or film. This film's sound engineer knocked it outta the park. The waking sound is as iconic as a walking sound can get. When i'm in a good mood, i'll walk around mimicing the Robocop walking sound because it's that awesome. And ED's voice and the Auto 9 sound are executed to perfection!

Robocop = my 2nd favorite film of all-time, only edged by PREDATOR, of course!

Robocop = my 2nd favorite film of all-time, only edged by PREDATOR, of course!

Come to think of it ED needs his walking sound aswell. How'd I forget that :slap

As for Robocops walk I love that hum.

Man, when i first saw this film, E.D. scared the **** outta me. The camera angle at that specific scene combined growl conveyed he was not a cyborg but a monster.

Guys, gather round, let me tell you something. :D

The ED-209 boardroom scene is to this day one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen in a movie theater. I was 13 when Robocop came out and it was only the second R rated film my parents let me see in the theater. Of course my dad had to chaperone but he picked a seat a ways off and I sat with a friend of mine on my birthday. When the ED-209 showed up and blew that guy away my friend literally VOMITED (luckily he held it in until he ran to the bathroom.) That's right, VOMITED.

The combination of the intimidation that that damn robot projected, the horror of watching a suited board member being messily disintegrated in front of his peers, followed by the flippancy of his coworkers (seriously that might have been the worst part.) The horror that unfolded in front of them, the tragedy of a guy just putting on a suit and going to work at an office and being so disgustingly obliterated, and then his peers almost crack jokes about it in the elevator afterward. That rocked me to my core.

There's just something primal about ED that I've never shaken. As an adult I'm all "Gary Busey in Predator 2" about him now. I admire the bastard, respect him for what he is. That such a character, even such a fantasy based inhuman character could ever do that to me. I might just have to own it as a memento of the visceral power of truly inspired cinema.

Too bad it doesnt have the sound of the guns firing. I always liked te sound of those.

Well it says:

- Ability to speak three (3) memorable quotes and make sound effect from the RoboCop movie
● “Please put down your weapon. You have 20 seconds to comply.”
● “You now have 15 seconds to comply.”
● “You are in direct violation of Penal Code 1.13, Section 9. You have 5 seconds to comply. Four…three…two…one…I am now authorized to use physical force.”

The "and make sound effect" is probably the sound of the guns firing after he's done with the countdown. It'd be awesome if the sound chip was motion activated. That way every time a guest entered your living room he or she could run around screaming like the guy in the movie as ED zero'd in on him/her.

It's only a matter of time before all vendors start asking for an NRD. When it does then it will be pointless to pre-order anything since your're basically being held hostage for a year or more before the item arrives and they have no business taking money upfront without the option to cancel if you are not satisfied with the final product before it ships. This hobby is going to sink itself fast.

I'm in agreement. Its a double edged-sword. On one hand I see why Sideshow and other retailers do it now, as it helps prevent over ordering, but on the other hand as a customer I don't like having to pay 10% of a figure that's not going to be released for at least a year.

I think we'll stop seeing in-stock availability of a lot of future Hot Toys releases and it'll shift back to the pre-sold out routine, where if you don't get on board months before it comes out, expect to pay an after-market premium when its released. Personally, I will be cutting back on purchases. Some figures I know I'll want no matter what, like Robo and Ed here, but other times I took a 'wait and see' approach, where I'd wait for the first in hand pics and reviews, and then decide to buy it. I don't think I'll be doing much of the latter anymore, if everything will be marked up immediately after its released.

I dunno, is $40.00 or $50.00 for a year that big a deal (interest on $50.00 over course of year is about 0 cents)? I think the stores deserve a little hedge from fickle collectors. Read any HT thread and it's full of people having to drop stuff at the last minute so they can pick something else up or due to financial troubles, etc.

That's why we are seeing stuff still in stock and taking longer to sell out. Escalating prices up over 200% from the previous year, NRD's, and product delays are all contributing to the decline of lucrative sales. It's time for the pendulum to swing back the other way.

Invictus Sol
05-30-2013, 04:09 PM
Can't disagree with that. Although I love the increased detail and think the prices are justified to a point, I do get the feeling that HT and others are now scratching around for gimmicks to try and push the prices up more in future. The prices as they are are pretty much my limit.

There always seemed to be this 'lease' mentality to a certain segment of collectors on these boards, even before the costs shot up. People who would buy everything released, only to turn around and sell it to get the next figure to come out.

I'm not sure what to think of the die-cast gimmick yet, Robocop will be my first, so I'll reserve judgement until then. As for the sound, it definitely is the logical next step after the lights. I don't need it, but I don't mind it. On one hand its easy to say that its useless and needlessly raised the price of R&D and production costs, but on the other hand, its trying new innovations like this that keep the hobby interesting.

I missed both RC and ED in their previous versions, and now I'm glad I did!
This is awesome, for a number of reasons:
Phil Tippett's stop-motion was a great tip-of-the-hat to the master Ray Harryhausen, who we just lost recently. Robocop represented the impending end of an era, the golden age of stop-motion animation. The film will remain an eternal classic of course; I was 23 when it came out.
I also just happen to live only a couple miles away from Tippett Studios in Berkeley, so I might have to drop by there and get this baby signed by Phil if I can.
The figure rocks, the price does NOT rock... As for the sound, I like the idea very much for ED, but for Robocop it will be hokey, since his lips are visible and won't be mouthing the words.
I think they made the right choice to do diecast for RC and not for ED. They both look great.
Like everyone else, I hope the dome is... you know. But, if by some insanity they do make the dome rubber again, I'll just make a mold from it and cast a new one in black resin, and share it with other collectors.

That just took away any lingering doubts I had about that. Really cool of you to do that, Anthrapoid. Also agree about the sound effects for these. Makes more sense to me for ED than Robo, though I don't hate the feature, either way. Don't think it really adds much cost to the figure, given how cheaply lights and sounds are incorporated into inexpensive toys, but the feature just doesn't do much for me and reminds me of kid's toys. Anyway, in context to how good these figures look, it's a small nitpick.

Pre-ordered this and Robo (w/o chair... just cannot see displaying him sitting down) from Urban Samurai. The small pre-order discount, no customs/duties and $15.00 flat-rate shipping do a bit to ease the pain, but ~$700.00... *sweats* Still, they're just too good to pass up. Will look amazing together on the shelf and really like the battle damage options on both. Another thing that makes me feel a little better is this license is done for me with these two figures. I never need another thing related to RoboCop. :yess:

That's a good price for both, jye. Really Sideshow's only benefit nowadays is a worthwhile exclusive or flexpay, but boy do you pay a premium for it (especially as a foreign collector). Really glad there was no exclusive with either of these.

Yep, Urban Samurai is a great store and I'll be using them more as time goes on, I think. Was really glad to see these two up for pre-order tonight and kind of a nice surprise that a deposit wasn't required. Great that you live so close. I'd love to be able to drive by and grab my stuff. Glad I have no memory of Robo-Cain (had to Google image it) so HT will not get their claws into me on that, should it ever be released.

LOL! Glad to hear someone say how disturbing that was! For me the worst part was when the guy realized he was gonna get blown away and started begging for help. Ugh...still can't think about that scene without shivering!

I guess we where about same age Khev, I was 13 when I saw this and that scene scared the crap out if me. Robocop is so gritty, über violent and raw that it wasn't until I was an adult when I could fully appreciate the movie and the violence of it.

Btw, the first R rated movie that scared me was Terminator, that beginning scene when Arnie punches through that street punk and pulls out a wad of blood and guts, scared me to death..I was 10 when I saw that one....but as for the theater it was Predator.

That's different.
1. It's a horror movie and it should be more graphic. Horror movies are intended to be violent, and there has always been that expectation. And Evil Dead was just... kind of silly. The original was great.

2. The original Robocop, in its day, was a big budget action movie. It would be like going to see Iron Man 3 today and then seeing really graphic violence and naked chicks. In action/sci-fi movies today everything violent is just off screen. They just don't show the impact, so they can market to kids and keep all the bored housewives happy.

Our nation has become sissified in our eternal struggle to make everything "safe" for children.

Well said. These 2 deserve their own shelf space, but that would be really expensive.

Our local dealer offers cash advance promos, and if I pay full for both, I could get Robocop (no chair) and ED for $620. But I don't think I'd shell out that much money for figures that I would only get in hand in 12 months or so, while I could use the cash for something else at the moment. Done that with 1989 Batmobile and the delay's making me regret paying in full. The delay's not worth the discount I got IMO.

They're restricting them from giving out discount because us consumers have been going to the retailers instead of SSC. Which is stupid because the reason people don't go to them is because of their NRD for everything.

I would go with AFX as well but it looks like some members are saying they've been very unresponsive in the past so it's making me iffy when paying them $675.

Ok, thanks for the 411, Hologram AI. If that is indeed the case, you would think they would apply that policy to retailers across the board for all Hot Toys releases they distribute. It doesn't seem to be the case with some of the new Iron Man 3 pre-orders or other licenses. :dunno

No such thing as free shipping, it's included in the price. I'll have to pay 320 for it from Collectibles Direct. So I'll pay the UK shipping and international shipping costs. I'm going with Collectables Kitbash for 300 shipped to Sweden.

Sorry bud didn't notice you were Eu :(

If I lived in the UK I would have bought it from Collectibles Direct, paid in full to get the £10 discount as well... :(

I don't know where the Cain figure is from presented in the picture.

Yeah, it's a clever fake. It's one of the original animation props of Cain, photo taken at Tippett Studios.

Here's the proof: http://toyhaven.blogspot.com/2009/03/kotobukiya-robocain.html

Cain - over-rated fig from a mediocre movie.

Cain is an awesome character, Robocain that is. The design just looks so menacing. Can't wait to see Hot Toys take on this.

Matter of taste I guess.
Don't like robocain design at all. The huge torso and tiny legs look weird.
Love the relative simplicity of RC and ED209. Sometimes less is more.

I have a secret design plan for adding a working 'Cain face' animation on a small view screen, which will fold out of the head just like in the film.
I will say nothing more...

I've seen that before; VERY cool. However, the HT version won't be nearly that big, so the project will be more challenging based on 1/6th scale.

He actually states that the figure is indeed 1/6.

Just ordered ED-209 couldn't resist I did say to my self that I wouldn't collect 1/6th again but hay ho . I used to own the original I know there was a problem with the rubber done but I applied 100% silicon grease to stop it from shrinking and cracking . I'm going to hold out on Robo until Hot Toys share there plans with the head sculpt .

He actually states that the figure is indeed 1/6.Really? It looked so much bigger in that video. I didn't read all the text, so thanks for the correction. If he can do it, I can too.

Just waiting for him and Robocop to turn up at Dark Figures. Everywhere else is either sold out or wants a big juicy deposit.

True, these prices are getting insane. Still that much of a sucker that I'll probably still buy it, even with having the earlier release this is a must.

You can at least save on postage here as a UK customer.

That's because this was the full uncut version. The VHS I had didn't show this either

Here's the pricing to those wondering.
Repeating it across all 3 so ignore the repeat.

Robocop: $235
Robocop with chair: $360
ED-209: $325

Man, if this thing actually cost $325 stateside I'd be all over it. Can anyone point me to the best U.S. price? Thought I saw some store who had it for under $400.

A really cool video, maybe you have seen it already, but well worth re-watching, ED-209 studio scale and life-size story included:
