I've been unable to access the server all morning. Same thing happened yesterday, don't know how many hours because several passed before I tried again. I tried using two different browsers, Safari and Firefox, and neither could connect to the sideshowcollectors.com server. I'm on a cable modem, so it's not a timeout at my end.

Right now I'm typing in this box but there is nothing else on screen except the very top left corner of the Boards name, its just the S but its down both sides of the page and when I scroll down.

Actually, I've noticed the board seems to slow down everyday about early afternoon (sometimes a little earlier, sometimes later)... and the post thing Nash mentioned, I encounter that at least once or twice most every time I'm on now days. Definitely something going on... seems like it started when those Yahoo! Slurp Spiders starting showing up. Any time of the day or night that I check who is online, there are a bunch of the Yahoo spiders doing their thing; maybe it is slowing the board down in some way? Might be worth checking with Yahoo about...
Darklord Dave
09-18-2007, 05:38 PM
There's an add on to limit the spiders- I'll have to see about adding it. Doesn't really make sense that they send 1000 spiders at the exact same time.

Followup to the post problem... it just happened to me and while I was waiting for it to post, I opened the board in a new tab and went to the same thread I was in and my post was already there... meanwhile, the original post was still "posting" with the progress bar about half away across. I've noticed this behavior before and I believe it may be the reason we've had a lot more duplicate posts and threads lately; if you click on the post button again, thinking it isn't doing anything, it creates duplicate posts. This happened to me one night and I clicked on the post button about 5 times while waiting for it to do something, only to see 5 of the same post once it finally showed up. So for anyone having this problem, don't hit the post button again, that will only create duplicate posts.

Search engines like Yahoo and Google use "spiders" (automated software bots) that "crawl" the web gathering content for their search databases. They got nicknamed spiders because of their obvious connection with "crawling" the web.

Why would they need so many on one site? Don't they all gather the same info? Or can they only hold so much?

Think how long it would take if a search engine sent only one spider out to each web site (that now number in the 100's of millions!)... multiple spiders can index the content much, much faster! They probably "spawn" more of themselves as they encounter links to new pages and those spiders index the content of the links, and so on...

It's a VPS, with plenty of bandwidth, so I don't think that's it. Could be the spiders though.
Not the same spiders from the Lost in Space movie I hope. They scare me.

Slow to post threads. 1/11/08 10PST
Sorry Dave but the serious lag caused me to post a duplicate thread in the LOTR section. I couldn't delete it. Sorry.

I tried something suggested by some other vB users - please let me know if the slowdowns still occur.

I noticed it was slow earlier this morning. Each page would hang before being updated. This was at approx. 10 or 11 AM Eastern Time.

I've never seen it this slow before. Even with the increased traffic it shouldn't be like this.

Oooo! Oooo! It's January, and it's pretty cold here in Boise. I'm gonna go get some molasses and see if it's as slow as the forum today!

Just a few minutes ago 6:00p CST I couldn't get anything to load... and its been like that off and on all day.
Hoping its just slow down due to extra traffic and complaints from todays PPO.

I have to voice my concerns also... There seems to be a great disturbance in the force...
Over the past week things have got quite a bit wonky here. I'm sure you know about this problem, I just wanted to add my voice to the other Sideshow collective.
Could it be a Hasseline curve...
A bend in time?

They've been working fine now for a while, so maybe it was just the extra negativity of the SW PPO.

Me and the hosting company have been playing around with different things to see what might be wrong. It seems to be on track right now though.
I'd still appreciate alerts if slow downs or strange behaviour occurs.

It's very odd Dave... it seems to be almost a regular occurrence two or three times a day, about the same times... mid afternoon to early evening (CST) and then later in the evening into night.

A lot of posts from earlier today are missing... some entire threads. Very strange goings on. Perhaps the wrath of Tonner?!?
Cocoboloboy

Yes, it might be wise to ban all Tonner related threads and posts. Bad juju. Bad juju indeed.

I'm talking to the hosting company about this - I'm sure it has something to do with the maintenance today. I don't know that we'll be able to get the posts back.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem with the forums I'm having?
NONE of the message posting tools are working, I can't use smilies, bold, quote, add link, nothing works. I have to type in the code for any smiley I want to use.
