Update: 07-12-2013 Finished! Many pics on page 10 ... (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/dc-comics-customs/122281-custom-1-6-bat-bunker-diorama-finished-bat-computer-wip-10.html)

Didn't expect it would be that much work, getting all the exact 1/6 proportions from the movies and some books together but now that this part is done, this is the first concept of what I'm working on.

Really love the puristic look of the Bat-Bunker in TDK and TDKR and I also love the Tumbler. I started thinking about a unique way to illuminate the Tumbler before so the imagination of displaying it in a 1/6 Bat-Bunker environment actually was the mayor reason that made me get the 1/6 Tumbler.
Didn't regret it but even though this Diorama will fit the Tumbler plus at least 1-2 figures I'm not sure if I'll display it like this or simply with a Bruce Wayne and maybe a Bat-Pod in the end.

Can think about it later on, as it's still a lot of work to do:

Understand that feeling :lol, waiting for parts to come is sometimes killing me.
The last pictures are just lighting tests atm to figure out which material leads to the best realistic result so the grid surface on the picture is only one of my partial test pieces atm.
The full-size one is on the way now, so I'll mount and show how this looks like soon.

Will add a typical Gotham road surface with 1/6 scaled road marks on the top. It's in a way logical, as the Bat-Bunker is is hidden under the streets of Gotham and this will be a nice space for additional figures or vehicles.

Made several small test parts for that in between and here's a first photo of the part with the final type of structure and painting:

Bah! You've come this far, you might as well add a 1/6th storage container to the roof.

Thanks man! :hi5:

Really thought about it in the early planning but I want to make the Diorama perfectly 1/6 scaled while displaying two of the concrete walls.
The only way to get this done is to build it like a corner, cut to look inside from two perspectives, as in 1/6 the complete Bat-Bunker would measure 403.50" x 126.67".
The storage container hiding the entrance would be closer to the middle which makes it space-wise almost impossibe to display it in 1/6 with the concrete walls in the background.

This....plus a working elevator to raise / lower your Tumbler or Batpod.:rotfl

:rotfl That would be nice, too!

But it was only used as a hidden passenger elevator and for Wayne's motorcycle.

http://www.imcdb.org/i209532.jpg

Was surprised myself but there's no scene in which one can see how the Tumbler or the Bat-Pod leave the Bat-Bunker, the Tumbler would even be too wide for the elevated platform.
But on one of the ends there's this slope diffusing into darkness that should probably be a kind of ramp used for this.

Fan
03-01-2013, 09:54 PM
Finished the street surface. At first I actually didn't wanna go that much into detail with this, but as I watched the scenes again and again to get a feeling for this, I decided to invest some more time to get this how I think it fits.

Masking everything:

http://imageshack.us/a/img94/2825/street01e.jpg

Applying a mixed color:

http://imageshack.us/a/img690/5195/street02.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img839/3858/street03.jpg

As you can see I changed the structure a little compared to the small preview piece shown before, as I think it was a little to wavy. Still need to make some minimal corrections at the painted road marks:

http://imageshack.us/a/img547/7818/street04.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img689/3855/streeta.jpg

An appropriate number of small imperfections is quite important to make it look real, I think.

Here's one with the Bat-Pod to get a better impression of size and proportions:

Hope you like it! :)

It's more a thin mixed color, based on acrylic medium with added small granules for model making in different sizes.
Regular sand would have been cheaper but it often has to many impurities.
The suitable tone also comes from acrylics, mixed from black and white.
Maybe I'll make a tutorial for that some day.

It's a lot about trying it out in advance. :wink1:

That's like cooking. :wink1: I mean I'm not a good cook :lol but it's a lot about trying you know? :)
I buy most stuff like this in a local store but do a search for "deco granules".

Hey pirate can you link me to the granules?
Can't link to my local store's shelfs :lol but it's close to this: http://www.ebay.de/itm/261069186766

Added finer granules as well. Think that "granules" might be a confusing word.
In my local store they are labeled "model making granules", just in german but I think you can find more searching for "model sand".
You could also try regular sand, as it's only some $ for quite a mass but as I said, I tried this before and didn't like it due to impurities and I wouldn't know were to put such big sand packages :dunno.

As said, maybe I'll write a tutorial for this one day, just don't have the time atm. But it's really no "done in one step thing" so I fear there would be more and more "step by step questions" and I don't want to cause disappointment if someones result doesn't turn out as desired in the end.

90% finished so many pics will follow soon.

In between, this is the bottom:

Even though the bottom's purpose is more functional than optical I still wanted to do it in the same quality and I had just painted it sheer black by now,
so I added a frame of cellular rubber to give the whole heavy dio a smooth and sturdy stand:

This weekend it'll be fun to connect the power supply to finally make some nice pictures for you, showing the Bat-Bunker diorama lit up completely!

http://imageshack.us/a/img5/4641/kqn8.jpg

This actually is the first picture showing the rock-like outer sides surface.
It's completely coated with a two-tone (black / dark gray) painting to give it the look as if it's cut out of the undergroud.

That's a funny post because he actually had a Batcave in TDKR. :lol

Personally I really like the Bat-Bunker's look a lot more than the Batcave in TDKR, too but I think the Batcave fits well in TDKR's storyline as they left the Bat-Bunker.

By the way, when I started planning the diorama I analysed about 68 stills from the TDK and TDKR to get the details and proportions right and from what I compared I suppose they built up the complete Bat-Bunker set for TDKR again, even though it was just used for a short sequence, compared to the many sequences in TDK.
One more impressing detail showing the efforts invested in this great movies.

Just some hours to get home and finally make the pictures! :yess:

Thanks a lot!

It's really built extremely sturdy. You could stand on the center of the upper side without a problem, though I'd never do this. :lol
Just if you'd put a lot of weight direcly on the left hand front corner it wouldn't be ideal but from it's own weight its not a problem because of the framwork.
Anyhow, an acrylic window will be added at this corner to keep the dust out.

DX11 was boxed quite a while and my Hot Toys head / Medicom suit / ZCWO shirt kitbash

Looks like you got a lot of more space for batman to spread out all your toys ;). Btw consider getting Avengers Agent Phil Coulson as a body double for Bruce Wayne. That suit is a very good fit and beats any after market stuff. A little more $$ but still no where near Kato and if you must you can recoup some $ selling the extras ;)

Still thinking about the "final" setup but I think it's a never ending story.

Thanks for the hint on Phil Coulson, have a deal with a friend of mine who had ordered two but I didn't consider taking the suit for mr Wayne yet.

Thank you so much my friends! I really have no words to express my appreciation for all the great feedback I get on the project!

Personally I see my work "only" in the 1/6 realization, by meticulously getting the details and proportions right and building it as realistic as I could in this scale.

I really admire all the artists that originally designed the Bat-Bunker for the movies, as it's such a great puristic design they developed.
Imo the Bat-Bunker is one of the most important parts of the movies to build up the great feeling that Nolan's Batman interpretation, especially TDK create.

How much did it cost you to build? And on a scale of 1-10 how hard was it?

Sorry, I somehow overlooked your question by now.
This one is close to 1K in parts already but I still have some parts to add, like an acrylic window for the open sides.

Actually a very difficult part was to get the accurate specs before I could make a concept and start building it.
The inner concrete textures were the most difficult part imo. It was very difficult to get them to look accurate as you have to take many aspects into consideration, first of all the lighting situation.

It's difficult to give it a number, some other things worked easier than expected. In a sum I'd give it an 8.

Sadly I still didn't find the time to finish these two kitbashed future Bat-Bunker inhabitants as mentioned before:

Update: Made the first joint tests for the articulated monitor arms and this is something I'm pretty proud of, as it will be done with lots of miniature ball joints (even much smaller than this picture may suggest). Works really good and very precise:

This looks pretty amazing... I have just put my Tumbler on a (small) Lack coffeetable and got the opinion that there is missing something. Guess now I know what is missing... :lol

How did you do the 3D model? Did you find a printerin Germany or is it shapeways? I have just received my licence for 3DS Max and will start to learn the program hopefully sooner than later...

Thanks man! I also have the Bat-Bunker on a Lack coffeetable. :hi5: Actually I started building it to have something suitable lighted to put the Tumbler in. If you need something like this, lmk. :lol You can read some more about the monitoring desk here btw:

http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/showthread.php?142514

Have compared many printing services in advance but for the prototype parts shapeways seemed the best choice. Following the link you can see some more parts of even higher surface quality. 3DS is a great program! Didn't make these 3D models all on on my own btw, I determined all accurate 1/6 specs and made drawings and from that a friend of mine (who is much better in digital 3D modelling then I :)) made 3D models for printing.

I have already seen that thread. To be honest before DKR I would have been all in. Unfortunatly that mobie destroyed the whole Nolanverse for me. Really missed Joker in it. Somehow... Die Luft ist einfach raus. :(

Think I understand what you mean. Watched it in the first cinema preview I could find, of course pretty excited but with mixed feelings from what I heard about it before but once it began I simply wanted to give it a fair neutral chance. I really enjoyed watching it but it didn't bring me to the same level of excitement and beeing in the movie as TDK did, but I must say chances were close to impossible, or completely impossible to top TDK imo or even to be on the same level.

Yes, the Joker was missing but I'm not sure if it would have made anything better in TDKR, not even sure if it would have been planned if Heath Ledger didn't unfortunately pass away.

Anyway, TDK simply is my favorite movie of this genre and I don't think this will ever change, hence my interest in building this iconic centerpiece of it.

Btw, if TDKR really destroys the line for you all I can recommend is to ignore it, take BB and TDK as the movies you like. That's what I did it with some other movie lines. :lol :hi5:

Everyone is different. I liked BB when i saw it, was a bit *meh* with TDK, but *loved* TDKR. I far prefer the scoring of it too.
I can watch TDKR again and again, but need to be in the mood for the other two.
Horses for courses.

That's true! I must also add that TDKR got better for me after watching it again some times at home and I actually didn't expect that. BB is actually the movie I watch the least of all but I still like it (would also like to see more collectibles from it made) still like TDK over the two but all together it's a solid trilogy with different parts and logical development in them.

My impression of the set in a few words: Detail work, quality and the mass of accessories are really impressive. Kind of a sensory overload to find three figure in one box but of course pretty cool! Don't see much of an improvement on Bruce's headsculpt towards the DX12 but hey, it's a repaint so I didn't expect any miracles. The improved P.E.R.S. cowl makes a difference like night and day though. :rock The clothing on Bruce and Alfred is even better than expected, very fine stitching, just some details aren't that nice, like Alfred's collar which is kinda fuzzy, but that's nothing that can't be solved.

The armory is incredibly well done, all accessories fit in their places well and it makes a sturdy impression. Owning the unlicensed TL armory I can say it really wasn't bad for the time in between but HT's version isn't only superior in terms of details but even more in terms of the technical design, didn't expect they would implement magnets inside the doors and the remote really is a very cool and useful feature in hand.

In a word, get it while you can, it's an expensive set but very valuable for what you get and I wouldn't be surprised if these skyrocket in a while!

To the few fellow freaks here currently waiting for me to finish their 1/6 Bat-Bunker environments, hope this doesn't make the anticipation even harder, but you know it's almost there. :hi5:

That is some amazing work. I would love to try my hand at some 3D modeling someday myself. But need to really take some time and learn. That said, everything I see, all the work including the 3D modeling is amazing. From the build to the paint job, just looks Fantastic. And the Armory pics are nice as well. Yeah, still working on it but it's more the concept I worked on step by step over the last months since the move didn't leave much time and I first of all have to finish commissions. :wink1: But I'm happy I found an a little more affordable way to make the bigger things like the street lamps and other important pieces as soon as it gets so far.

Those streetlights look spot on. Are you making the lamps with a 3D printer or by other methods?

Fan
12-04-2014, 04:27 AM
Thanks, there's still a lot of detail work to be done, specially in the upper areas but once finished I plan to get a 3D-print of the half model, make molds and cast them with to halfs for each streetlight. The transparent lighted parts will be made separately.
The original street lamps are really giant so also in 1/6 this'll be quite material intensive.
