I agree deadly striker. It looks good, just not absolutely bang on. I'm thinking 95% movie, 5% comic book.

I'm thinking it's around the eyes.

Bit OT, I saw the sculpt for IM Mk1 V2 the other day, and in hand, that looks really, really good.

I think it's the hair even though that's the new style. I still think this is an awesome figure and it really makes me want to buy the hall of armours even though I don't have all the armours to go in them!

I see no issue with the sculpt? it looks stellar hopefully production sculpt doesn't take a huge hit. The hair im not feeling as others have said i think thats whats throwing the likeness a little. Im not a huge iron man fan but i will pick this up and the mark 7 then thats me done for iron man. (untill they show the MK47 lol)

Really packed set. The sculpt does a decent job in suggesting RDJ as Tony Stark, but there's always at least one thing a bit off when HT does RDJ. The eyes again this time? They never get that right.

I'd say $300 for this. Probably wont buy this unless I really, really love IM3.

Lejuan
01-25-2013, 01:54 AM
Wow. Even for a proto you'd think the likeness would be better. But it won't take much to get it looking spot on, should be a good release as far as it goes.

I think its the hair cut thats throwing it off.

Its not spot on, but its not terrible. Avengers and the Mark IV HS look better.

Its sorta on par with Mech-Test Tony. Not perfect, not terrible.

But what they should have done was install a light into Tony's chest, and not just paint some blue on his t-shirt and call it a day.

edit: never mind... it supposedly DOES have the light up chest.

I don't even like the character and can see him near perfect in that sculpt.

I honestly can't comprehend how you all can dislike it. Doubly so since they could've done another figure in it's place for people who want them (like Elias for example) but instead did this for you fans and you refuse to appreciate how good it looks :dunno

sallah
01-25-2013, 03:39 AM
Yeah, the head may be a bit on the "buff" side. Looks like RDJ mixed with a smidge of Arnold. Still a decent sculpt... but I prefer the Mark I 2.0 and the Mark VII to this one. That shouldn't happen really. Each head sculpt should be as good as or better than the one before....

But the part that made me laugh:

Not to come across as arguing with ya Nova- But maybe that is why the rest of us are judging it harshly? Imagine if Fass-neto came through looking a little "muscle-ized". I am sure you would be the first to question its sculpt, while those who aren't big XFC-fans might be okay with it? Not saying that is the case here for sure, but just throwing it out there.

BTW- You were the first one I thought of when these pics hit. I saw them late last night on FB and though- "Uh-oh... another one before Xavier. Nova isn't gonna wake up happy..."

I am hoping it may be a combo of both. The stats say it has a light-up reactor, but it definitely looks painted on the shirt in the pics. That would be awesome if so. You can switch the light on when you want it glowing, but with it being painted on the shirt, you can have the light switched off for display while still looking accurate.

i don't think that's the case, i used to be a fan of him. When i look at these pics i see the best RDJ sculpt made so far. There is a lot of TLC put into this set people don't appreciate it.

It's just sad how there is little joy anymore. There isn't one single figure on this board that people are happy with, there is always something wrong from big huge dealbreaking issues to teeny tiny inconsequential ones. In this case it's near perfection and people still aren't happy, that annoys me

Fair enough. I too agree that the blasting can get out of control... But hey, at least this isn't the DC threads. ;)

I think this release is overall awesome and can't wait to own it. I think the sculpt is a smidge off, yeah... but I have faith that it will be tweaked to perfection before release. If it isn't, this is still a must-buy for me and I'll just take the head as Tony on a "gym day". :wink1:

- One (1) LED-lighted stage with a cardboard underneath (battery operated)

...So the larger ring underneath is cardboard. That gives me hope that this may actually squeeze in a Detolf without that in use.

Also- I wonder if they might include a cardboard backdrop with the pictures of the actual movie prop armory with this? That would be sweet if so since I don't plan on buying any of the armory... If not, some industrious Freak needs to make one!

I honestly can't comprehend how you all can dislike it. Doubly so since they could've done another figure in it's place for people who want them (like Elias for example) but instead did this for you fans and you refuse to appreciate how good it looks :dunno

I agree, from the side the profile (both sides) it's without a doubt 99.9% bang on, from front on I'd probably knock it down to around 95%

i can't stomach even going into that section anymore, those lots are nuckin futs with the *****ing over the tiniest of details.

Just to put this in perspective, people are overwhelmingly positive about both DX Joker 2.0 sculpts. Most acknowledge that it's not perfect, but the vibe in that particular thread is pretty good.

I see a lot of RDJ in this sculpt, but the bits that aren't RDJ seem to be the really crucial bits. If that makes sense. Anyway, like most have noted, the sculpt will be tweaked. I think there's a lot of surprise that it even needs to be after so many attempts though.

Agreed... then I see this pic and it loses it a little for me:

Crazy what a slight tweak in the angle of the pic can change how you feel on a likeness. That first pic seems great, while the second looks a little "Arnold-ish" in the mouth and jaw area. It also seems the eyes are a bit different between the 2? In the first, there is no white under the pupil area... in the second, there is visible white. There is a also a visible bag under the eye in the first, while the second it almost seems airbrushed out? Plus- Look at the points they come to at the bridge of the nose in the second pic, while the first pic seems much more natural. Those differences in the eyes throw it off a little...

I think it will look better in the final version though. I have faith... :)

It's not like Hot Toys have done 10 different headsculpts all from how RDJ looked Iron man 1 and still haven't nailed it is it? He does look different in every film, I remember when I first saw the IM3 trailer and thought he looked different (might have just been the new hair cut, he might of lost a bit of weight, who knows)

Somehow, only having one armored arm seems incomplete even though he lacks the rest of the armor.
I suppose wanting to display him with both armored arms and boots is what I'd find cool about having something like this, almost like Tony is going bare bones Iron Man to take on some kind of threat.

If the right armored arm was included, I'd definitely pick him up parted out (skipping on the platform, cart, and robot arm) but would probably find a better head sculpt.

Right now, the only basic Tony Stark figure I need is an Avengers one, The MC set fulfills that need quite nicely.

Yeah, it kinda sucks we're only getting the left arm for the armor. Perhaps if the top and bottom are symetrical we can switch it to the right arm and then when Mark 42 is released , we can add the right hand. That would make this a true update of the Mech Test figure.

Looks great to me, sure the sculpt isnt quite 100% but in hand I think it'll look perfect. shame about the douchbag beard but thats more of a criticism of the movie design!

Liking the accessories, will be great to finally get a Dummy! have been watching them on ebay for a while.

the magazines, tools etc are all pretty neat

a few criticisms though;

Why no left arm? Kinda incomplete without one. the teaser poster has one;
http://i.annihil.us/u/prod/avengersmovie/ironman3/teaser1/images/background/2.jpg

Why include a mark 1 - 7 helmet, surely the new design would be more fitting? although that might depend on how the movie goes, if its the older style helmet in that scene then fair enough its accurate :)

tony looks a bit muscular!

I'm sure there are other people who like me already have a few Iron men and have tons of small bits kicking around... I mean they included another collar for the mark 4/6 tony head, just what I need...

Just nitpicking though really as I think the figure is great and will get it for sure :)

To echo others: the sculpt looks a hell of a lot better from profile-ish views than dead on. It's off in the same way that Gordon is if that makes sense. And it's true, HT needs to start moving head instead of falling behind as they have been lately. All their recent sculpts lack in comparison to their comp: Angelica, Gordon, Cap, T-800, Luke, & DX12 Cowl. If they don't change for the better Thor & Wolvie are in that batch.

Don't get me wrong; they're still sick figures but their not hitting the same mark sculpt-wise as Enterbay's: Kobe, Jordan, TML, Elvis, Django & Calvin. They're no where near Blitzway's Carlito. Hell, even Iminime has stuff that is more spot on and Rainmain's Anton is a dead ringer.

I like the fact that they finally have a Tony specific body (Ark Reactor) but is it me or does it look a bit buff for RDJ? I know people hate rubber (for good reason) but I like that there's no elbow joints :D. This body will work for a lot of other customs

Hopefully they make necessary changes because this could be a really awesome set.

i don't think that's the case, i used to be a fan of him.

You know the way it goes bro. Everyone bashes and would NEVER buy this "piece of crap" untill they "break" and once it's in hand they're in love. Surprisingly the DX12 is getting nothing but love and acceptance despite the fact that it's riddled with QC issues

The face is off and I would rather have him in his new Iron Man 3 armor than in his shop clothes. I know that's coming but I would have rather it first. Of course, the best option would have been this one coming with a full suit that fits on the figure.

That pompadour has got to go. Otherwise, it's not too bad! This Tony Stark looks less puffy around the eyes... poor RDJ is starting to get up there. We're still waiting for a perfect Downey headsculpt, but with just a few tweaks I think they could nail it.

Not a big enough IM fan to pick this up, but it's a great set for building a nice workshop diorama (esp w/the hall of armour). Like the headsculpt, too, and for me it's one of the closest to RDJ that I've seen (especially for a proto... have to expect it'll be closer by release). I'm less concerned about likeness to any particular actor than the look passing for something out of the comics (when it comes to Marvel stuff), so maybe I have a less critical eye in that regard.

That price seems a little low. If this is a new body and has a bunch of light up features, wouldn't that alone boost the price a good 100 or so? The other avengers figures like Thor are in the low 200s and have way fewer accessories, which is why I'm wondering.

Price aside, I'm not too crazy about the headsculpt, at least from the front. Profile-wise, it looks excellent. This will probably be my first Iron Man figure. I'm not interested in the armored figures at all because there's not enough 'Stark' in them except for the unmasked HS. So this is perfect - it still has some of the armor!

Hard to focus on anything else associated with this release considering the bad likeness. That should really be the primary selling point here.

Are you aware that HT has done RDJ's likeness, like, 7 times already and they have never been all that accurate? Thor did seem to get tweaked slightly, but that happens pretty infrequently with HT. In the vast majority of cases, what you see on a prototype is what you get.

I think the body as we see it, is also too strong. Downey is strong but not bulky. He practices Kung Fu and so he is more on the Bruce body size. Ill bet what we see now for the body is a Frankenstein of different parts and the real one will different then this.

I have no interest in a Tony Stark figure but I really hope they fix the head sculpt for the people who do because right now it looks like @ss. What is this, like their 10th try? Is Downey really that hard to capture? As it stands, the Mark VII currently has the best sculpt.

RDJ will shoot this down and it will be redone. They probably have several variations like DX06. Remember how long after we first saw the new Thor did we see the latest sculpt? A few weeks that was. HT must see the response here as generally negative with regards the sculpt.

The fact they are showing this means it's the approved prototype. If they needed RDJr signoff they got it before showing this.

It's pretty good but not as good as the first Mech Test headsculpt.

He has Alien Guy hair though...

I don't think it's even close to bad. Compare it to their previous RDJ attempts and it stands out. A prototype is just that. It's not a final product so what you see is not what you get.

It's just my opinion, and I know I'm not the only person who can't see the likeness of the actor. If you think it looks good, then good for you, buy the figure if you really like it that much. My opinion shouldn't bother you if you trully like the sculpt. In fact, it shouldn't matter. Oh.....and if you have to say, " without wanting to sound abusive", then you are knowingly being abusive and very immature towards people you don't even know.
