From CoolToyReview:

One of the new figures revealed on Thursday at the National Entertainment Collectibles Association 2012 SDCC booth is the first in a new series of 1/4 scale articulated figures based on The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit feature films. Click the thumbnails above for a closer look at the Gollum figure, which will launch the new line along with a Sméagol figure.

Looks great. Are they planning on re-visiting Lord Of The Rings? or are they just going forward with The Hobbit? I would love to see them make the 1/4 scale Ringwraith that was rumored years ago.

Were NECA the guys that produced those 18" gandalf, aragorn and legolas figures? I can't remember :slap
What have Neca previously produced for the trilogy?
(Looks cool btw) :)

That's almost HT level good, with the skin toned plastic and rooted hair.

According to BBTS there's going to be a Smeagol and Gollum version - I imagine that it's just two different head sculpts with no change to the body.

Since I already have the PFs I won't be getting this one, but it looks great and a good price. Maybe Neca can jump in and produce some of the 1:4 characters SS hasn't produced like Gimli, Arwen and the other hobbits. The problem is they will likely be interested in the popular characters like Gandalf and Aragorn.

I had the Rubies lifesize one, but yeah, it was just a statue. No articulation. Its nice, but could have been a lot better. Im waiting for another company to do a better one.

Haven't collected any Neca 'til now but I've PO'd this pair - what's their track record like re: proto to final product? Can I expect the in-hand figures to present pretty much like the protos? I might be better off cancelling the PO and waiting for in-hand pics...

Snakey Jones
11-21-2012, 04:43 AM
This isn't a high-end company, the protos are generally better looking then what ends up on the shelves, but with NECA the gap isn't that big and most of the time the final product is pretty darn close to the protos. Other than that, the only thing you really have to keep an eye on is their QC, especially with the paint apps; I find with NECA products its best to scan through the shelves first to find the one with the best paint apps, this isn't to say their paint is terrible, but often a figure might have a misaligned pupil or some such that isn't really noticeable until you've opened it up and tinkered with it a little, I myself was quite disappointed to find that my Clayton Carmine figure had paint apps on the details on his right leg misaligned.

And finally, there's always the chance you might get a figure with lose joints or a broken joint, if that’s the case I hear NECA has pretty good customer support but I haven't tried it myself yet so I can't really say.

I know all this sounds pretty bad, but NECA is, in my opinion, the best non-high end company out there right now, but I’m trying to be realistic when describing what to expect; just pay attention to the paint apps on each figure and you should be fine, it's fairly unlikely you'll get a figure with broken joints or something.

it looks amazing... but 1/6 will make it a must have...
now, maybe neca is making more 1/4 figures to go with it...
I really want a nice gandalf figure, that will be cool, and maybe the SSC is the best, but I don't like it, and a 1/4 gandalf is just too big for me :/
so, buy or no to buy gollum...

Neca figures are great, I have some old ones from ghostbusters (2004) and they still look amazing, the paint apps and sculps are great.
and I have the chance to look the predator, alien and terminator figures, and all are amazing.
Some figures have issues with the paint apps, and some joins, or "delicate details" like some spikes and stuffs from alien or predator... but even HT have them.
Neca is an amazing company, and do amazing figures, if you like it go for it!

I like the Gollum figure a little more.

If they made the Smeagol one with a smiling expression, i would have been all over that.

The one they used is too scene specific, and a little too zombie like for my tastes. Its like the scene when Frodo calls out to him infront of Faramir, and when Frodo calls him Smeagol for the first time.

I might be wrong... i love LOTR, but i think i've only seen the trilogy around 3-4 times.

Yeah totally.. the new 18" Predators (which are much larger and more complexed with accessories & armor) are only $10 more than little Gollum here. Gollum is Tiny in comparison and bare bones in the box with nothing else.

It does look really nice though, props ro NECA for that at least.

Wow, $80 each at TRU? TRU gets ridiculous with their pricing.

They are $50 a piece at most online stores; plus most online stores sell the set of two for $90.

Really? $80 at TRU? That's good way to kill a line right off the bat. You can almost get both for that price online! With TRU being the one real place NECA stuff can be bought off line, that price will really hurt the future of this line.

Gollum arrived in the mail today. Overall, I think it is an exceptional figure and easily one of NECA's best efforts to date. The sculpting and paint are extremely well done, and the articulation is quite good. Personally, I think the paint job is as good as the work in Sideshow's 1/6 figures, and at a 1/3 of the cost. The veins on the head, arms, hands and feet are really well applied, and the paint accenting the skin texture and variations is excellent. The use of the skin colored plastic allows for some translucency in the ears which is a very cool effect.

My two minor gripes are that some of the joints are quite noticeable, and the hair (although nicely to scale) is too long and can kink up if messed with too much. I will probably give Gollum a trim which will hopefully solve that issue.

I think the visibility of the joints is to be expected in a figure that is nearly naked, with almost no clothing to hide said joints. If NECA had gone with soft rubber covering the joints, you have the eventual breakdown of the material to deal with that has been an issue in the much higher end Hot Toys figures.

I got it via Ebay for $49.33 shipped. I would definitely recommend it and I hope that NECA releases more figures in this 1/4 line.

That's funny! To be honest I was being lazy and basically duplicated the pose in the package. When I get back from Philly I will spend some more time posing him. He is very cool!

Its easier to get rid of too much hair and too long hair. Much harder to give him more or longer hair. This way you can at least make it right yourself rather than letting China F it up.

Got mine today. The hair is much better in person. It just takes a little futzing to get it to look right. But its matches the film hair quite well really.

Not sure which one I like better: Gollum or Sméagol. They are both great and represent his too halves nicely. Although a smiling Sméagol head might have been a better choice than the worried/scared/concerned face they went with. But its definitely Sméagol and not Gollum. The even Gollum snarl is perfect for him.

Bring on Bilbo now!

For the record, the NECA Gollum is great for what it is, I've seen it in a B&M shop, NECA does good work! But, are you seriously saying a plastic articulated figure is way better than a high end collectible? If so, how? What makes it better?

High end is on the eyes of the beholder... being expensive or made with high quality materials doesn't make it better.
I am saying, in THIS particular case, the NECA Gollum/Smeagol looks better or closer to the source than Sideshow's. Of course, as a collectible the Sideshow one might look nice at first, but once you examine the paint-apps, the details, the textures (or lack thereof) then you see my point.
And yes, a plastic articulated figure can look a LOT better than a "high-end" overpriced statue... another example is the T-800 PF vs. the Hot Toys one... thought to be fair HT is definitely higher end than NECA. But still...

NECA makes great stuff and I'm not going to argue with you because it's personal preference and you like it better so that's all that matters. All I'm trying to say is that I bet that if I put both of them on a shelf and asked people to say which one was more impressive, I'm sure at least 9 out of 10 would say the PF.

But it's mostly because of the pedestal.. but if you take the PF Gollum and compare it to NECA, the SS one looks awful, specially the paint job... as a collectible, yeah SS is more impressive due to the design, but as an accurate representation of the character, NECA wins in my book... :peace

Gollum is specifically a LotR version, not the Hobbit. So they can bounce around from each trilogy. I imagine they will stick with Hobbit and dwarf sized characters for the time though before giving us larger characters.

Lurtz would be cool and it still baffles me that the Ringwraith that was rumoured years ago never saw a release. 'Wraith's have a very solid track record when it comes to sales and it wouldn't have been very complicated in terms of sculpt and paint.:dunno

Thanks highlander I really agree that he just seems too small for the 18 inch LOTR figures but might actually be in scale. Who knows, universally though the consensus seems to be that he's smaller than we expected.

I really recommend grabbing him he's really quite incredible looking as i mentioned I feel paint sculpt and plastic wise on par with the hot toys plastic figures like Avatar.

This is prolly my forth Gollum...

I have been waiting forever! (for a good one)

Honestly the paint from NECA is becoming sick! I specifically asked my dealer to get me one with a really good set of eyes... I dunno if they are all painted this well, but I love this guy... one of my only loose figures not in a display case (even though he was at first)

Doctor_B
01-27-2013, 02:01 PM
The eyes and face of the Gollum I got via Ebay are equally well painted. The only photos I have seen where Gollum's eyes were a little wonky was the one that Michael Crawford used in his review of the figure. The pupils were definitely misaligned on the one he reviewed. Hopefully that is an isolated issue.

I am still blown away by the sculpt, paint apps and articulation they achieved on this figure. It really shows that high quality paint apps are possible on mass produced and (relatively) reasonably priced figures. Looking forward to the next entries in this series. Even Bilbo, who is a logical choice but not nearly as fun design-wise, will be a likely purchase.

What a steal! Unfortunately my FYE didn't have anything great left when they closed it last year.

Tell me about it! I still have quite a few FYE's situated around the area. This was the only one that was closing and I stumbled on this one leaving a restaurant with my fiance. It was perfect timing. I thought about shooting over to Toys R Us to see if they had any Gollums left before checking out this FYE. Had a 20% off coupon that was set to expire (on the 27th)...but this was a better deal by far.

Damn man for 16 bucks I'd gladly get a smeagol even though I think it's a bit excessive to have both (well with as many figures I have that is) you don't pass up a deal like tar.

Still really loving this guy domt regret getting him for a second even though he's not in scale he really rounds out my Gandalf and Aragon, here's hoping Asmus does a Frodo, Sauramon and Legolas that tickes my fancy, those three are really the only other LOTR figures I need tl feel like my collection is well rounded. I'd get bilbo too. But it will feel weird if I never have a Frodo in my collection of any kind.

Just got the 1/4 scale Gollum figure yesterday. Pretty cool figure. Very nicely detailed.

Also, in a report from Toy Fair that I read on Cool Toy Review, after they release the Bilbo figure, NECA plans to make some dwarves from The Hobbit if the line continues to sell well and then apparently they might bring some more LOTR trilogy characters into the fold.

In my opinion he is an awesome figure but probably not the best one to sell through. Some people won't get him because he is creapy where as Bilbo, Gandalf or Thorin would probably get more traction althoguh the tooling costs would be higher. With Gollum they got two figures for the tooling cost of one and an extra head sculpt.

If they can get Bilbo out there might be more of a demand for the remaining Gollums.

Thats good its not cancelled, but really, Id REALLY wish NECA would tap back into the 1:6 scale market seriously. Bring us some great quality 1:6 Lord of the Rings/Hobbit figures. 1:4 is nice but I reserve that space in my collection for Enterbay HD and SS Premium Formats.

Also would love them to do 1:6 Scale Horror as well.

These two figures have to be amongst the best NECA have ever produced. Really detailed paint app and attention to detail like the dirty fingernails and feet. Very welcome additions to my collection! Maybe would of liked to have seen Smeagol with a happy/smile expression though.

I have yet to see either figure at retail. Maybe our TRU never got either stocked, or if they did they sold out immediately.

I got my Gollum off Ebay for a fair price. Hopefully Bilbo will have better distribution in my area. Gollum is easily one of the best offering I have seen from NECA, and one of the best mass-market paint jobs as well.

Although I don't think he really resembles Martin Freeman 'en face'. When you see pictures of the figure in profile it does look a lot better.
Are the clothes cloth or plastic btw?

superdoug
05-12-2013, 12:39 PM
Looks like they are plastic and I think all their other 1/4 stuff is plastic except the netting for the predators. My guess is a softer plastic for the part of the coat over the main body and maybe the vest and the arms and the rest of the clothing is hard plastic.

I dont know what, but sopmething is off on his face. The proto looks mor like Martin Freeman.

And what make Neca with the skin/plastic ?
That looks so rough and faulty.

The eyes looks amazing. I dont know which technique Neca use, but it looks a little bit like the eyes of Hot Toys, Enterbay an Blitzway figures.

He would look much better with the new transparent plastic. The transparent plastik is the right way, but to glossy for not sweat figures.

superdoug
05-16-2013, 04:45 AM
I agree but I think I remember NECA stating somewhere that they only use the new skin plastic if the figure has a lot of skin.

From my little experience with NECA there can be a big difference in the paint quality so hopefully these will show up at retail stores.

The Rider
05-16-2013, 05:14 PM
But that make no sense. Then they have this new plastic, the must use it. Only the head is important enough.

and on bilbo are some skon parts, head, neck, hands and the feet.

I think this new plastic are the future, and when they make this better the figures looks more realistic.

I saw this in hand at Toy Anxiety in Phoenix today. They had one on the shelf for 49 dollars. It looked decent. The face does not look nearly as pasty as the image above would imply but there is a texture to it. The box looked good and tight to the figure which felt quite heavy.

Just got Bilbo in the mail today. It is an extremely well made figure and definitely worth the $49 it cost via http://myworld.ebay.com/thenecastore on Ebay. The likeness of Martin Freeman is quite good (miles better than their earlier attempt with his Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy figure) and the hair is especially impressive. The outfit looks great and they did a nice job weathering his clothing.

With regard to the video review, I thought he got too caught up in feeling that the belt needed to be pulled until it fastened. I made no attempt to pull the belt until the hole lined up with the peg, and the belt stays in place just fine and looks like it is properly fastened anyway. I agree with his concern that if you pull too hard you may rip the rubber belt.

My only minor complaint is that the skin tone on the face could be a shade darker. How the figure is lit will impact this issue--in too bright a light he will definitely look washed out.

I just really couldn't see Martin Freeman in the sculpt. Maybe it was the choice of the open mouth. It was not a bad sculpt at all, it just didn't make me think of him immediately like the Bilbo Baggins sculpt. But it is always in the eye-of-the-beholder.

Okay so mine arrived. Overall I really like it. The weakest part though is the painting of the headsculpt. The texture of the clothes, the painting of the weathering and grimme, the sculpting of the hobbit feet are all fantastic. He's sturdy and seems to be in perfect scale with Gollum.

The biggest gripes I have with it are the paint color for the headsculpt is not the same they used for the hands and feet. They really should have used the same color base for all the skin and then painted on the grimme on the hands and feet over it. The two tones are pretty distracting. Plus their appears to be two tones of color for his face. It kind of looks like he has a five o'clock shadow.

Overall again well worth it in my opinion. Hopefully they do a hobbit 4 pack for the Lord of the Rings since it's probably the best chance for Sam, Merry and Pippin to be made. NECA already has the base body and there would be some sharing of the outfit pieces so it might be cost effective, hopefully. I would be in for a $150-$200 4 pack.

Now a 1/8 scale villian like an Uruk, Witch King or Sauron would be awesome too!

The Rider

His eyes are a little glossy. When I first opened him I didn't notice it due to the lighting.

So eyes do have a glossy finish but depending on the lighting it isn't very noticable.

On the fotos the eye painting technique looks a little bit like Enterbay, Blitzway or Hot Toys. The eyebrows are a little washed out on the borders(not so sharp and artificial like cheap figures) and you sean painted eyelashes. On the skin they have darker parts to look more realistic.

My girlfriend recently picked up the NECA Bilbo(I originally wanted him,but she begged me to let her get him and there's no sense in having two!!)...but I have to say I'm glad I didn't get him because I was actually quite disappointed with the figure really.

They totally went overboard on the rough-texture of Freeman's face IMO...it looks like the layer of unwanted skin on the top of your porridge for heaven's sake!!

As for the likeness...meh...I mean,it kinda looks like him from certain angles but honestly,I think it bears more of a resemblance to Bill Murray!!!

Gollum is about the right size. Hobbits should be around half the size of people so don't compare SS Frodo and SS Gandalf's height ratio to Neca Gollum and a Neca 1/4 human figure. SS hobbits are on the tall side of things.

How does the 1/4 Gollum look next to the 1/6 ssc hobbits?

Yeah he would be huge in comparison.

Any word from Neca on if or when they are going to release any more hobbit figures?

I just received the Neca Gollum and Sméagol...

Over-scale but not that far off from 1/6th, considering the SS Hobbits were over-scale as well. Just couldn't resist the excellent work that Neca did on these two. I got a good deal on the two so I had to get both; I prefer the mean one but the sculpts are so beautiful and expressive it really is a hard choice which to display.

These are fresh out of the box so the two of them definitely need a haircut/futzing.

Thanks! Its good to be here.

Asmus also had a huge part actually -- the fact that Gothmog and Witch-King got made in 1/6th really spurred me on to find the sale on the LOTR Extended Edition set. That and the fact we got a new 60" flat screen and Blu-ray player for Christmas this year.

It was the perfect storm for LOTR collecting. :lol

ASMUS is doing a really nice job so far it appears. I just have the Morgul Lord figure but he came out very nice and the others as they land appear to as well. So I can totally see how for someone more into that side of collecting it could get you started. Having a 60" HD TV doesn't hurt either. :lol

Same ! I tricked my GF into watching the extended trilogy in one go with me ;) She didnt know it was the "extended" version.
Asmus has got me all excited for the series again.

When LOTR came out, there was a lot of stuff from the movies to collect, but those were too expensive, and there wasnt much likeness in the sculpts etc.
Now we're finally getting decent priced, good looking figures ;)

I saw the WK on a store here in Brazil, there was just 1 piece , I bought it instantly without a second thought, and now I'm hooked to Asmus' line-up ;)

Yep, they really did wake up the sleeping giant. I hope that the soon-to-be released Gandalf is as good as promised and that they make some adjustments to Aragorn so that this line can succeed, Asmus can make some good money, and they can give us a long list of characters from the movies.

As you can see from the above picture, Frodo is a solid place holder but he really needs to be re-made (or at least a better sculpt). I'd be curious to see if Asmus gets that far along and if they do Hobbits, will they try to do the correct scale?

First off, I apologize for resurrecting a long-dead thread. But I nabbed NECA's Bilbo recently just because he was so cheap ($14 shipped at GameStop! Sold out now, alas, or I'd buy more), and since the movies turned a lot of people off (I don't plan to see them), no one seems to be into the merchandise, and damn it, Bilbo is amazing and I wanna talk about him! I figured this'd be a good place to do so.

The only other time I made such a casual decision to buy a clearanced figure that ended up winning my heart to this degree, it was also a NECA figure: Tonto.

Here are some Bilbo photos:

Finding and making extra accessories for him has been fun. I just wish I had the talent to create a backpack for him.

Meanwhile, Hastings has Gollum for $30, so I'll be procuring him in a week or so. I will be hard-pressed to produce anything half so haunting as paramoremcr88's Sméagol portraits!

since the movies turned a lot of people off (I don't plan to see them

Even though they are CG heavy and totally make characters and stuff up that wasn't in the book they are absolutely worth seeing. If nothing else just for Dain on his war-boar or the elven king on his stag. Tauriel, while not in the books is a nice bit of eye candy and although I don't like certain sub plots they built I am looking forward to her figure when releases. You should not write these off, while no where near as engaging or deep as the LOTR, they are still a great trip into Middle Earth

Monte Williams

I appreciate the input, Travis, but I would only ever have given the movie a chance if it had been one film, preferably directed by Guillermo del Toro. I wasn't even a fan of the Rings trilogy. I like The Hobbit because it's a short, fun, simple novel, but even then I'd have never pursued NECA's Bilbo if it hadn't been so delightfully cheap. It's just that once I had him in hand I fell in love with the toy, but my affection for the toy is stronger than my affection for the franchise.

It is from one of those zombie packs that came with that, frying pan, machette, and a pick ax. I don't remember the product name or brand.
