:lol Monkey see, monkey do.
This is actually pretty damn shameless on the part of Marvel... especially after their endless claims of not being phased by the market share DC gained with the New 52.
The Big Two are such utter twats. It's a damn shame they own most of pop culture's most popular & iconic characters. It's almost as if these characters have been held hostage by bumbling mobsters for the past 40+ years. Marvel is now much worse than DC, because they're owned by Di$ney and run by that assclown Quesada. (Not that DiDio is much better)

I hate how Bendis said, "Fans want Jean Grey back." On all of the comic forums that I visited, fans repeatedly complained about Marvel's frequent kill hero/bring hero back problems and most X fans said leave Jean dead.

Awww man, why change it, if people want to know what happened just skim over wikipedia
Would be better if this was just a new ultimate universe imo, looks like they are trying to destroy the Marvel U to pander to Avenger fmovie fanboys, just look at Fury and Cap.
and not to be a hater or racist but everyone knows what race 616 Fury is, and he should stay that race.

Yeah, it seems like it's just them trying to play catch up with DC. The reboots are dumb IMO. And besides, they reinvent the origins every other year, don't they? Like Nova pointed out with the Ultimates, 616, etc...
And I hate the Avengers/XMen mash up.
Oh well. I haven't really followed comics in a long time, so no skin off my back.

On one hand, this is clearly Marvel piggy-backing on the relative success of DC's New 52. On the other hand, it may be just what the "House of Ideas" needs to bring new readers in and revitalize some of their stale titles. Either way, I'm going to try to reserve judgement until I see the finished products...I kinda have to as a comic book retailer :) .

Either way, I'm going to try to reserve judgement until I see the finished products...I kinda have to as a comic book retailer :) .
I understand what you are saying from a $ and professional perspective, but I have visited the comic shop every week for 25 years or so and the writing has gotten so bad at Marvel with lame events, cannon inconsistencies, 'deaths/resurrections', series revamps, and retcons that AvX and now this are the final straw for me. I am sure brick & mortar hate hearing regular pull customers say it, but I am done with comics and will just buy TPB or graphic novels.
And what they are doing with the X-Men world and time travel? Marvel has been biting at the bit for years to bring Jean back and I think fan feedback has consistently stopped them. Time travel? terrible; 50 years of cannon down the drain.
The good new is that I still preorder all of my Hot Toys through you guys. :)

There is an article I read and in it Marvel stated that they wanted it to be crystal clear they are not rebooting the universe. This is the continuation of what comes next after AvsX. Some things are indeed changing, but a DC reboot this is not.
I wish they would rather just reboot everything. That I find would interesting.

Article on EW, about some of the new titles.
http://popwatch.ew.com/2012/07/03/marvel-now-jean-grey-exclusive/
Marvel Comics is embroiled in Avengers vs. X-Men, a crossover event which follows an all-out war between the publisher’s iconic superteams. When Avengers vs. X-Men reaches its conclusion, the stage will be set for a massive restructuring of the Marvel Universe. “It’s not hype when we say that AvX is the culmination of a lot of stories we’ve done over the last several years,” says Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso. “Characters are redeemed or not. Characters are changed. The X-Men and the Avengers are both repositioned for the future. What better time to shake things up? “
And Marvel is shaking things up. Entertainment Weekly is excited to exclusively announce Marvel NOW!, a massive new initiative that will launch new titles and relaunch old ones starting in October. Some of the company’s top storytellers are leaping from one corner of the Marvel Universe to another. Brian Michael Bendis is leaving the Avengers for a new X-Men book; Jonathan Hickman will end his run on Fantastic Four before kick-starting a new twice-monthly, jampacked Avengers book; and Rick Remender will begin work on the flagship title of the new era, Uncanny Avengers, a book that will blend Avengers and X-Men characters into one superteam. “I’m excited about taking creators out of their relative comfort zones,” says Alonso.
Of course, this isn’t the first time that a major comics publisher has inaugurated a new era with new creative teams and new #1′s: Just last year, DC Comics relaunched their entire line with The New 52. But Alonso is quick to draw a sharp contrast between DC’s initiative and Marvel NOW! “This ain’t a reboot. It’s a new beginning.” Unlike New 52, Marvel NOW! will roll out gradually over a few months, with creators finishing off their runs and then starting new ones. “I feel that it’s a much more humane approach for retailers and fans to tell them: ‘Look. In the months of October through February, every week you can go into a comic book store and find a few new jumping-on points for the Marvel Universe, a place you’re going to like visiting. Or revisiting.”
We spoke exclusively to Remender, Hickman, and Bendis about three of the books that they’ll be rolling out for Marvel NOW! Read on for more, and be sure to check out our exclusive piece of art from Marvel CEO Joe Quesada.
Uncanny Avengers: Remender describes this as “a bridge book, something that can delve into both worlds. It has a natural purpose for existing after AvX, where we can focus on human-mutant relations. The broad strokes are: Captain America comes out of AvX and recognizes that he hasn’t done enough to help the mutants.” The book will be drawn by John Cassaday, and will include heavy-hitters like Cap, Thor, and Wolverine, but Remender is also excited to focus on some less well-known characters, like Cyclops’ little brother Havok. “Havok’s always been the black sheep rock-and-roller of the Summers family. He can’t do that anymore. You’re going to see Havok become one of the biggest players in the Marvel Universe.”
Perhaps appropriate for a team that comprises a vision for the Marvel Universe’s future, the Uncanny Avengers’ first villain will be, literally, a ghost of the past. “In 1943, Arnim Zola, who was this bio-fanatic engineer, recorded the Red Skull’s consciousness, and set it to wake up 70 years later. So the Red Skull [in Uncanny] is right out of 1943-44. Prime Nazi scumbag. In his mind, he’s taking that vitriol and hate and Nazi horror and methodology, and pointing it at the mutant species.” And Remender stresses that the mash-up philosophy of Uncanny extends beyond the team’s lineup. “I’m not just smashing the heroes together, I’m smashing the villains together. It becomes something unlike anything we’ve ever seen, with stakes that are so huge, it takes a team comprised of the best Avengers and the best X-Men to go take care of it.” (Starts in October)
Avengers: Jonathan Hickman tells big stories. During his run on Fantastic Four, the writer has become known for meticulously plotting out stories years in advance in what Alonso describes as “his Unabomber-sized notebook.” And he’ll bring that maximal aesthetic to Avengers. “It’s not six Avengers, it’s 18 or more,” he teases, promising a diverse mix of popular characters, B-listers, and new characters. (Jerome Opena will have his work cut out for him as the Avengers artist.)
Unsurprisingly, Hickman’s favorite Avengers stories veer toward the cosmics: the Korvac Saga, the Kree-Skrull War, and the time-scrambling Avengers Forever. Hickman’s first story arc on Avengers is called “Avengers World,” but even the term “world” sounds a bit too micro for Hickman’s ambitions. In the wake of AvX and a new era of Marvel, “The obvious solution is for the heroes to become something bigger and larger, a more appropriate response to an ever more dangerous time.” Avengers will be published twice a month, and Hickman is currently planning to mix together longer five-to-six-issue story arcs with one-off stories that focus on individual characters. As for those characters, Hickman is mostly keeping mum about the lineup right now, but he revealed one teammate to whet our appetite. Kids, we’ve got six words for you: Shang-Chi, master of Kung Motherf—ing Fu. (Starts in December)
All-New X-Men: “The X-Men is a tough nut to crack,” says Brian Michael Bendis. “It’s the Robert Altman movie of comics. There’s thousands of characters, all of which have a website dedicated just to them. I wanted to make sure I had a take that was unique.” So when it came time to plan for Marvel NOW!, Bendis — who’s been Marvel’s go-to Avengers guy for close to eight years — remembered an idea that had been floating around the Marvel writers’ retreats for a long time. “It was about the original X-Men. If they saw what the Marvel universe was now…well, it’s so much worse than the Days of Future Past that they’re always worried about. This would scare the crap out of them.
Thus: All-New X-Men, a time-travel story with the original X-Men jumping to the present. We’re talking Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, Angel, and Marvel Girl. They’re teenagers. They’re wearing blue-and-yellow outfits. They’re seeing their older selves, and they don’t all like what they see.
Bendis is literally drawing the teenaged X-Men from a specific panel in the original Stan Lee/Jack Kirby X-Men series, “a moment where they’re at their most feisty.” And although he can’t talk too much about the mechanics that get the old-school X-Men into the present, he promises this is not a dream sequence. “No Danger Room, no imaginary story. This is actually happening.” (In a statement guaranteed to calm at least some of the skeptics, Bendis swears: “The space-time continuum is of utmost importance to me.”)
Bendis stresses that All-New X-Men is most of all a character story: the tale of young, idealistic people who are suddenly faced with a bleak vision of their own future. “Here’s the big question that the original X-Men are gonna be faced with: We’re gonna grow up, and this is what we’re going to get? That is not acceptable.”
And of course, the time-travel shenanigans at the center of All-New X-Men will bring fan-favorite character Jean Grey back to the mainstream comics continuity for the first time since her (second) death in 2004. “It’s the one thing X-Men fans have always asked for is: They want Jean Grey back. But they want Jean Grey. Not reincarnated Jean, or the ghost of Jean. Well, you’re getting Jean back. And Jean is gonna be looking at a world that rattles her.” And Bendis brings up an intriguing personal connection when he talks about writing the beloved character: “I love feisty redheads. I’ve been married for many years to a very feisty redhead. But I’ve never applied that to writing before. I didn’t even realize what I was doing, but Stuart Immonen is drawing the book, and looking at it I realized: ‘Ha ha, I’m doing my wife!’” (November)
Marvel CEO Joe Quesada illustrated this exclusive piece of art for EW, showing 13 characters who will be key to Marvel NOW! Some people, like Cyclops and Iron Man, have new costumes. Thor is rocking a couple of swords. And then there’s Rocket Raccoon, of Guardians of the Galaxy. Quesada describes this piece of original art as “the tip of the iceberg.” As part of Marvel NOW!, characters from throughout the Marvel lineup will change. “There are some costume changes. There are some new character attitudes. Some characters may be changing their identities altogether.”
“There’s a reason Sue Storm is there,” says Quesada. “And why there’s a floating robot near Hulk. We’re trying a lot of fun and new different things, we’re exposing characters who we’ve had in our toy chest for a long time.” But Quesada has a quick answer when you ask him who was the most fun to draw. “Before I was into comic books, I was really into cartooning, and I had a blast with Rocket Raccoon.” Quesada promises big things in store for Rocket Raccoon — and considering that news recently leaked that Marvel is moving forward on a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, don’t be surprised if Rocket Raccoon is headlining his own billion-dollar franchise soon.

Same with me. I only read collections; I haven't read a single issue since about 1997. I love(d) the Ultimate universe, but now with about a dozen Ultimate Avengers-related HCs being released in the past year, I'm lost as to what I should bother keeping up with.
The glut of these one-offs and short-lived series has done the opposite of their intended effect: I actually buy less because of them.
Darth Cruel
07-05-2012, 03:11 PM
The re-imagining of the characters is the reason I got out of reading the comics. I was tired of having to keep track of 3-5 different Spider-Man magazines that had some aspects that crossed over and some that did not.
The only re-boot Marvel needs to do is to clean the whole mess up by publishing one comic where every single Marvel superhero is all together in a conversation and we find out how every re-imagining of every comic was just part of a big "what-if" converation between them all. And then Marvel needs to get back to the basics.
I would be back in, then.
So...Iron Man is going with black armor?

I don't think that'll stick. According to Bendis it's a time travel ploy to get Jean back in from the 60s, I don't think the rest are coming, it'll be a "This is what happened to them" kind of thing so I imagine it's a cover image only.
The Marvel Universe is a cluster****. It was hard enough to get back into The Avengers stuff and I tried to go back in for the mutants after X:FC but that was almost impossible to figure out. I'm glad the #1s will give a new anchor to get back in but if it goes the way of DC's New 52 then it'll go back to being ****ed up in no time flat.

Well, this is one of the signs of the apocalypse. I stopped reading in the early 90s. Death of Superman, the Spider-Man clone stories, multiple covers (chrome, embossed, quadruple fold out, hologram, prism, etched, mono-chrome, bagged, 2nd, 3rd, 4th cover, alternate cover).... Wolverine without adamantium... This is almost like they are intentionally trying to tick off fans.
there's also a campbell 3 part variant set
Are they seriously pulled a 1991 X-Men #1 and releasing multiple covers that all make one scene? Wow. :slap
IrishJedi
09-07-2012, 08:19 PM
No, the first 3 issues make one scene, not multiple variants of issue 1.
It'll still suck, though. Marvel's plotting & writing team is worse than amateur. DC has bug problems itself, but they at least have a handful of writers that blow Marvel out of the water. My soul hurt from AvX it was so bad.
I think I'll try xmen, fantastic four, deadpool & avengers

Hmm, I'm curious about the new Cap series. I've always liked John Romita's art. Are these writers any good?

Marvel Comics has announced details of the “Captain America” relaunch taking place as part of Marvel NOW! in November.
Rick Remender (“Uncanny X-Force”) and John Romita Jr. (“Uncanny X-Men”) are the creative team for “Captain America,” following a multi-year run from writer Ed Brubaker.
Here’s how Marvel describes the title:
Thrust into a bizarre, inhospitable world far from home, the all-new, high-adventure, mind-melting, tough-as-nails era of Captain America is NOW! With no country and no allies, what’s left for Steve Rogers to protect? The Saga of Dimension Z begins here!
“Indiana Jones high adventure meets Lee & Kirby-flavored science fiction, as Captain America embarks on the adventure of two lifetimes,” said Axel Alonso, Editor In Chief, Marvel Entertainment, in a news release. “To survive a gauntlet of challenges so outlandish that only Rick and John could have concocted them, Cap will have to re-examine who he is and what he stands for, and confront an unexamined period in the life of a young man named Steve Rogers.”
Marvel NOW! looks to be a new take on the adventures of Steve Rogers. As a long-time Cap fan, this looks like a more Kirby-influenced take on the character, though we’ll see as more information is released.
“This won’t be Cap getting orders and going off to serve S.H.I.E.L.D., this is going to be Steve dealing with threats he sees and at first he’s a bit reactionary,” said Remender in an interview with Marvel.com. “He’ll be dealing with the day-to-day and doing his normal thing and when our story opens the inciting incident will change his life so dramatically that in ten issues he’ll be an entirely different person.”
Each issue of “Captain America” will include a code for a free digital copy; also, each issue will feature additional content through Marvel’s AR app.
I'm cautiously intrigued.....

that supposed to be iron man :slap
And just look at Cap, hawkeye & BW. I KNEW they'd **** with the comics to make them like the movie, not just that but they're replacing the REAL Nick Fury with the movie counterpart

I wonder if Tony Stark will eventually be the main hero of the Avengers, like in a fashion the film treated him due to the popularity of Robert Downey Jr. He was, afterall, the biggest hero of the day saving the city and steering the nuke into space...doing the self-sacrifice kind of thing that Cap is known for.
They may make it more difficult for new readers to dislike Stark. I can see Marvel using this reboot to take advantage of Iron Man's current popularity, which I would wager is higher than ever.
I used to read comics more in the '90s, but it got overwhelming with all the different books, arcs, reboots, "deaths". I took a year off and was totally lost. I never committed again, but maybe I might actually take advantage of this.

This is supposed to be good? I'll check it out...
Is there anything I need to know before I pick this series up?
Stupid question, but who is the armored Spider-Man?
Is that the new Venom?

Let me put it this way, this has been an ongoing title since April 1997 & has/still is a solid book without being a major title like the X-Men, Avengers, etc...
The basic premise was villains pretending to be heroes to villains trying to reform into heroes to villains being forced as hero-hunting hit squad to covert ops team composed of villains directed by another villain to villains tryingnto reform & so on... :lol
And yes that's a new Venom with a different host.
That new one that'll be released on December would be a good jumping point for new readers but if you want to get some history on the T-Bolts you could pick up the Thunderbolts during the Civil War event, its been released on trade paperback or hardcover.
Excuse me for blabbering on but the T-Bolts is my shiznit! :rock
Villains are always far more interesting.

Thanks for the info. I'll pick up some copies I should find them at NYCC. I agree, the villains are more interesting. You don't know what they are going to do.
Can anyone tell me if any of the below are being retconned with the new Marvel "reboot:"
1. Spidey teaming up with Satan
2. The "Civil War"
3. Anything Cap/Bucky/Winter Soldier/Cap dying-related?

I'll be trying out these to see what sticks
All new X-Men
Fantastic Four
Cable and X-Force
Thunderbolts
Superior Spider-Man
Nova
Guardans of the Galaxy
I know Venom will be in T-Bolts, but i can't find news anywhere if his solo series is canned or not.
Anyone here read Scarlett Spider-Man or Wolverine & the X-Men, i'm thinking of starting them up, should i?

I'm still learning my way around the Marvel universe... pretty much had my head buried in DC (when it comes to print)
If Wolverine and the X-Men is the same as regenesis? i.e this one:

then I've read issue 001 and thought it was okay.

So this is annoying...
One thing you'll see right off the bat is the limited number of Premiere Hardcovers that will be arriving on store shelves. These Premiere Hardcovers will be reserved for our core titles, with a few exceptions.
"So you can definitely expect to see Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Avengers, All New X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, Uncanny X-Men, Uncanny Avengers, and Indestructible Hulk in the Premiere Hardcover treatment, and then followed by the paperback edition - 6 to 8 months down the line."

I started collecting HC because it took so long to get the TPBs out and by that tiem the series was either cancelled, retconned away or the status quo had changed too much.
And now they cease doing HC of the ongoing series.
I collect Venom which has two HC and the third will be a TPB only. same with the second avenging spider-man
The Scarlet Spider series started with a HC and the second is now only available in TPB

My OCD finds Marvel's decision unacceptable. Way to ruin your shelf. :(
Besides.. holding a HC to read is so much nicer than holding a tpb.

I wish they did HC and TPB same day. Interestingly enough, I had a talk with my LCS owner who's happy with Marvel's decision; he says HC collections never sell in the numbers their trade counterparts do.
I may just sell everything and go omnibus at this point.

I've been reading scarlet spider and really enjoying it from the start, but the current crossover with venom, minimum carnage, I find pretty lame. But generally it's a pretty solid title I think.
