Sad from a heart-achingly cute perspective anyways..,
My girlfriend has a hamster named after one of our favorite vampires, Spike! Unfortunately, Spike is getting older, and after a trip to the Vet today, we have another trip to make tonight to say goodbye to Spike. Spike developed a heart condition and is now retaining about twice her body weight in fluid, and is in some discomfort, but luckily no pain. The hamster is likely not to improve with treatment, given her age, so it is time for us to let go. I am sure any kind words would be appreciated by my girlfriend, but I have been pretty sad about his too. :monkey2

Sorry to hear that Seaward. I know the loss one feels at the loss of loved one Large or Small. :monkey2
Sorry to hear. Tell your girlfriend that Spike will be in a better place. I own 2 adorable bunnies so I can imagine how you guys must feel. It is hard to let go of someone that has been with you for a long time but he will be in a better place. Condolences to Spike.

Oh, that's so sad! I had a pet rat when I was a kid and I remember being so heartbroken when she died! I know a lot of people may wonder how you can get attached to something so small but they do have their own little personalities and can be so lovable! I love my dog like he was one of my kids and he is so spoiled by my whole family.

It is sad, but it would be sadder not to let go and have the hamster suffer. You obviously love the dear thing, because you have made the best choice, out of that same love. It would be selfish to try to hang on. I'm sure your Spike thanks you for looking after him so well, for so long, too.

Sad times when your pet has to pass. They are more important to us than we sometimes realize.
Student toe, you didn't name one of those bunnies Anya by chance, did ya? That would be pretty funny.
My sincere condolences to you and your girlfriend Seaward. :crying
I recently lost a family pet hamster, and it was very difficult for everybody.
Teddy was one of the family pets for well over two years.
She was a fluffy tan Teddy Bear Hamster with a great disposition.
She played, she didn't bite, and she was always very friendly.
She had been ill for the past month, and the medicines that
were prescribed didn't cure her ailments.
We came home to find her cold and in her cage on 06-29-06 at
around 9pm. I took her out of her cage, and discovered that
she was still breathing very shallowly. To warm her up I held
her in my hands. I held her all night, sleeping on the couch
with her safely on my chest, with my hand on her to warm her
and make her as comfortable as possible. She woke me up at
3:09am with a couple light squeaks while breathing, and then
I held and petted her until she took her last breath at 3:59am.
I just wanted her to know that she was loved, and I wanted
to be there for her right up to the end, holding her, petting
her, and comforting her as best I could before she passed away
in my hands. She will be missed by myself and all my family
members, and we'll never forget how great of a pet Teddy was.
If you have kids it is even more sad, as they become very attached
to any animals that are part of the family. We have a dog who has
been part of the family for 8+ years, and when she ever passes away
it is going to be totally devastating.
Again - My condolences to you and your girlfriend Seaward. :crying

Hi Everybody!
Well, while I was at work, Sarah and her Dad and Aunt took Spike to the vet. The vet was surprised that the visit earlier made no impact on her health, and it was decided that it was time to say goodbye. Sarah last saw Spike at 6:45, and when I got home from work, we had a little funeral. It was appropriate that Spike was buried with the lid from her hamster ball, as it said "Superpet." While I was still at work, I told Sarah about the board, and she is really appreciative of all of the kind thoughts. We are both really sad, and it is funny to be so sad over such a little critter, but she was really great.
Thanks again everybody for your thoughts and kind words!
Love,
Chris, Sarah, and Spike

Again, just so sorry about this. She looked like such a sweet little thing. But, it's better that she didn't have to suffer. Hugs for both of you!

Last year our cat of over 20 years died. It really was like losing our eldest child. One wall in our house is a shrine to her with poems and sketches that I made in memoriam.
On Saturday, however, after a year of getting over the loss, we picked up two kittens from our local cats protection league. We swore we wouldn't get another black cat so that it wouldn't be like replacing Spock, but one feisty little black kitten climbed the wire gate of her pen and squealed so much that we just had to choose her (She is so like Spock it is uncanny, my wife burst into tears when she saw her)..........her little brother came too.
My Mom who is over her from SoCal at the moment was a bit spooked and is convinced Spock has returned.
In a way........maybe she has.
So while all is sadness now Seaward, give it time and new little souls will occupy your time......and if these kittens are anything to go by, will wreck your house!!!! (AAArgh!):lol
Much good infomation here for anybody who has lost a pet:

It's always so sad to lose a beloved pet, whether is is feline, canine, cavie or even a fish or a hamster. The rainbow bridge is a lovely story that does help with the whole process and I am convinced that these beloved pets will be waiting for us at the other side of that bridge to stay with us forever and ever. It's hard, but time does heal a lot and even though we never forget each pet, I know they are watching over us and waiting patiently for us.

Sorry to hear about Spike. Many of us can come to love our pets a lot more than most people. Animals love you no matter what and it's always hard to lose them. Tell your G/F I am sorry.

I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone for their kind words and support. Sarah was really touched that everyone was so considerate and compassionate. She was struggling with feeling so immensely sad over the passing of such a little critter (Spike weighed 200 grams, 75 of which were the accumulated fluid by the end). but reading the story from JS and the links to website helped her a lot! Thanks again everyone, this place is the best!
Student toe, you didn't name one of those bunnies Anya by chance, did ya? That would be pretty funny.
:) No. Sorry but my wife has control over what name to give. Creampuff and Blueberry  It would be funny if it was Anya though.
Seaward, again, Sorry for the lost. I know Spike meant alot to you and your girlfriend. :monkey2
