UPDATE: 4/3/12
Here is pics of the fabric showing the color and texture. I cannot take any pics of the cape until I have the hot toys cape. So if someone would like to send me a hot toys 89 cape and in return I will make them a free custom cape and return their cape as well.

hello everyone I will be offering a custom batman 1989 custom cape. I was going to purchase the figure but have since decided against it as I am just not happy with the deteriorating rubber issue. I have some pretty nice material which falls very nicely it is a black mole skin which is texturized and resembles leather but it is not. It is thin yet heavy which allows it to fall naturally.

If there is enough interest for a cape which I am sure there will be than I will need someone to send me the 89 hot toys cape for template. In return they will receive a free custom cape. I will be posting pictures within the next day or 2 of the material. I have a huge test tomorrow for grad school so I will try and take a pic either tomorrow evening or tuesday. The material is very very rare as I have been to a few stores and every mole skin is different. I have some coming my way and I do not want to talk prices or anything else until you guys have seen the pic of the fabric material and it is acceptable. If anyone is willing to send me an extra cape let me know. I would of course send it back along with a custom cape. Thanks

Can't believe missed this thread. I am totally in!! I don't have the figure yet but I am NOT a fan of wired capes and I feel like the HT cape will be a pain in the ass. How long do you think you'll have to hold onto the HT cape before sending it back. I know it's not an exact science in dating something like this but maybe a rough estimate?

awesome... I had to order the material since the stores do not carry it anymore and so I guess this mole skin is very hard to come by. Once I get it in I will post pics. Sorry for the delay guys.

Lance, i am in for a couple (one for my brother)of the 89 custom capes.

Cocoboloboy

That material looks familiar, L. Could you drape a piece over something and take a pic from a couple feet away. I'm curious to see how it'll look on a figure.

Kinda reminds me of a piece of brown cloth I got a while ago for my Lando Skiff Guard custom. It wasn't a faux leather like HT's cape but actual cloth with a print/texture that mimics the look of leather from a distance but not the feel. Very unusual stuff I thought.

Anyways, just curious if it was all cloth like that brown stuff I got or a faux leather.

I will post more pics next week as I am receiving a cape so I can make a cape. The material is a thin black mole skin.

Not yet, I have a cape coming early next week so I will have the first cape done next week and will snap a pic of it around something since I don't own any figures.

I don't know if you have frequented the oil thread but there's a pretty damn good chance that there isn't an issue at all. I'm really leaning toward the idea that it was all a fluke. You got a vast majority of folks chiming in that they're not having problems and the ones that did, coming in stating that it ended up not being oil at all.

You might be missing out man. Prices will probably come down in the next few weeks, you might be able to snag one for a great price.

Anyway, I might be interested in your cape. I've been following this since the beginning and love your Begins capes. Good luck.

What's the scale of those, um, scales. It may just be the closeness of the photo, but the texture looks too large. Can you take some photos with something (like a 1/6 figure) in the shot for reference?

Cool. I know you said you're planning on using the HT cape as a template, but I think it is a little off. In the movie, the seams of the cape line up to the pointy ends of the cowl. On the HT figure, you can only line up a few of them at a time, as the default cape just doesn't have enough fabric to line up with the points all the way around.

DiFabio

You probably have references pics Lance, but if not, here's some pretty good ones.

My only nitpick with the Hot Toys cape is how the seams don't match up with the scallops on the cowl.

The cape being puffy is mine, more so than the scallops.

I hope Lance has cured the puffy cape.

DiFabio
04-07-2012, 04:54 PM
It's a great cape for certain purposes (like lifting it up over his head) but it would have been nice if they included a second cape that didn't have the wire and wasn't double layered. Just a plain old cape with one texture.

I'm sure Lance will remedy this. I have two figures so one will most like have the Hot Toys and the other, Lance's.

The puffyness of the cape will be solved there will be no seams as no sewing is involved. It will be just one piece.

Even with the template isn't going to be hard to do without a figure for some sort of reference. Just to make sure it lays right?

I have a feeling this may require having to be piece stitched to work properly. I am not sure a single cut fabric is going to translate as perfectly as it did with the OC capes. But with that said, if anyone can make it work, lforigno is the man.

Cocoboloboy
04-17-2012, 08:51 PM
Ah, yes. I thought so. That's the same stuff I tried years ago. Definitely not a good replacement for HT's cape since it's a thick fabric and not a thin faux leather.

Thanks for the pics, doc!

:lecture As much as I love your capes, I think I have to agree with you you. The only thing about the HT cape is that it's a pain in the ass the futz. You could always do as I and others have done and take out the wire and the inner lining. It lays much naturally.
