I loved this movie! Surprisingly good, it's like a Joe Dante 80's movie combined with Over the Top with a dash of Karate Kid. The cheese factor is high and there are a LOT of cool practical effects with solid robot designs.

Looking at the photos on page 1 it looks like the hand can open, there appears to be a posable thumb and the rest of the hand looks like it could open, but not each finger .

Looks as though the finger part of the gloves slots out to possibly be replaced by a palm type sculpt.

I've been meaning to see it, there are too few films of thiese genres that caan be taken with a fun and non-serious attitdue

Man the timing for this release is pretty awful. REX came not too long ago. I would have hoped they would wait till the end of the summer or so. I really want this too I guess I'll figure out a way to work it in. I would love to have the entire lineup of Real Steel robots, including the one with the cowboy hat. The only one I probably wouldn't buy, believe it or not, would be Atom, but it really depends. If he is the last release then I would probably get him to complete it, but otherwise I'd just hold off and get one I am more interested in. Twin Cities was my favorite.

noisey boy is cool and all, but what's the first robot Atom beats? was it ambush? I'm thinking ambush is the bot that gets destroyed by the bull, then noisey boy gets destroyed by Midas and then Atom beats, I can't remember the bots name. Zeus is the final bot right?

noisy boy and zeus will be the only ones worth getting.

atoms design was meant to look like crappy robot, so i dont think hes gonna be too impressive on display.

Eh I love the Real Steel designs though I agree that Atom is fairly underwhelming as intended by the designers. Twin Cities I think will make for the most impressive display when the lights are on. I have no doubt that ThreeA is going to go all out and include the full city styled lighting for his body and it should look fantastic.

On the other hand Zeus will look terrific for his sleek clean shiny design, of which we know ThreeA can do since they do it on some of their variants.

As for as most impressive in general it will probably be Metro (the junk yard robot) if they ever do him. That seems like a strange thing to say, but when you stop and consider what ThreeA specializes in, I think it is obvious this guy is probably the one they want to do the most. The immense weathering and contrast in bright colors and lack of symmetry will create a very distinct looking figure.

jnmx2000
04-17-2012, 11:37 PM
yea but Atom was the heart of the robots in that film, without him they all become meaningless, so I feel he warrants a purchase above all the others, as he is the most relevant, but yes, he is the least impressive of the bunch, I might consider getting the bigger bots from the end of the film with Atom.

So $200-260 for standart 12" HT figures of a human characters that based on re-using basic parts of each other (bodies and hands) is OK and $330 for extremely detailed, huge & unique figure is too much?

yeah...but the fact that they have the 2000 AD license rights. boggles my mind why no ABC war robot yet. :gah:

They've done an ABC warrior - Mongrol

The Stallone Dredd film had that ABC warrior in it as a homage to the totally separate 2000ad comic series ABC warriors. They don't really coexist at all, and the stallone dredd film is very frowned upon by 2000ad fans.

The ABC warrior in the stallone dredd film is meant to be what Hammerstein is, the leader of the ABC warriors, and they are making him currently (no picture yet) So you will get it, but with more comic leanings (which are better and more brutal looking for that character imo)

Sounds like there are a few quality control issues (one person reported having a bunch of pieces unglued/broken off) and that it has some problems here and there. Hopefully Midas is a little more solid.

My Ambush comes tomorrow. I'll be sure to let you guys know what I think.

Seriously did no one actually buy this? It seems like there is so little buzz for him and Midas even on the ThreeA forums. I'm starting to wonder if barely anyone actually bought one.

Well I might be misleading with the joints. By hip I mean the base of the leg up top. Because the hip joint is so stiff, you can't move the legs around which can make balancing hard. His legs are just twin towers right now, but I plan to use some WD-40 tonight to try to loosen them up.

The other joints are not stiff. They work just fine. I apologize for the low resolution pictures, but here we go!

I'll give a bit of a run down of the figure now.

So as far as the paint applications go this is easily ThreeA's best job so far. They really put some heart into the weathering. Often times their weathering jobs are sporadic, random, and nonsensical. They don't go well in some kind of theme or idea so it can be hard to call it anything, but random dirt and grime. Here though we can really see a battle damaged feel to it. The pistons and pipes throughout Ambush are impressively weathered to look rusted. Paint looks like it is chipping off in areas and his boxing gloves really look like they punched a few too many times. Even his head has taken a beating. It's OUTSTANDING.

The engineering is one of the most impressive aspects of this figure even if it ends up being its weakness too. Just look at the back shot I posted. I can't help but stare at the intricacies throughout the figure's build. Just bending his arms and legs is almost hypnotic because you can really appreciate all the effort they had to put to designing it. This is not a normal toy. It is nothing like a Bandai robot for example. This thing is like a machine. It has all of these parts and pieces to it. The detail put into it is like a real body or machine. It's on a whole new level of detail.

His eyes can light up, but for some reason they did not bother to include the batteries needed for it, which really annoys me especially since to insert the batteries you have to open up the back of his head with a screw. For how much we paid they couldn't be bothered to just do it already?

The Bambaland exclusive is a must end of story. If you have any other 1/6 human this figure becomes twice as awesome. It does not matter who you use. Hell I have Che Guevara holding the controller and it makes it three times more awesome. The controller feels a little cheap, but it is actually really well build. They made it so that it can fold up and fold out which allows you to pose the arms of the figure and the controller adjusts to it. Basically it makes holding the controller in a believable fashion really easy.

The figure has a good center of balance, but of course he would have a much better one if I could get the blasted legs to move. His toes have basic articulation too so it helps keep him stable.

He generally feels surprisingly light. I understand that using diecast for something like this would be a disaster, but I think some areas (well all the blue parts honestly) could probably have benefited from it though it might have really messed up the balance and joints so I think they went for the right choice in the end. The pieces feel sturdy enough that I am not too worried about breaking it though and that's a good thing.

He's absolutely gigantic. Height wise he seems like he is almost twice as tall as some one sixth scale figures, but what really gets me is the width. Especially if you spread his arms out he just takes up so much room. He's very impressive on display.

The articulation is somewhat of a mixed bag. I am satisfied with it so let me state that first, but there are two killer aspects of it. For one thing, obviously the tight joints on the legs out of the box is terrible. This is too ridiculously tight not to have noticed. They should have had these joints nice and ready before shipping out. Of course this can be fixed, but that doesn't mean I still wouldn't dock them for it.

The other issue is a true problem that everyone should be aware of. While he does have points of articulation at the chest that allow him to move backward and forward (so leaning points), he lacks one above the groin at the waist. This means he can't actually bend forward in more than just a hunch. This is somewhat weird because it makes it so that you can't do poses you might have hoped for. You can do boxing poses, but if you were hoping for kind of a football tackle or more wrestling looking stances it isn't going to happen.

His arms are not double jointed unfortunately. Ambush has a thick design so I think it is justified. I believe Midas and Atom will have full on double jointing so it should be fine. What Ambush can do that I love is his arms can be bent upward toward his sides because they work on an extreme ball-like joint up top. I am bad at explanations, but when you see it you'll know what I mean. It gives you extreme control over the arms, more so than you would have expected.

And as for the packaging this is probably 3A's best too. The box seems simplistic, but that's because it is. Nice basic white with details on the robot. It's simple, but great and it makes an excellent backdrop if you have the room. Its cover is magnetic and it folds out so you actually can have a nice white background that says AMBUSH on it.

What really impressed me was the packing. At first I was upset they went Sideshow style and it was basically just the box put into another cardboard box with no real packing materials to protect it, but then I realized how safe Ambush was within his actual box. They used layer after layer of DENSE foam material. This is probably the most sturdy packaging I've ever seen a figure come with. Ambush wasn't going anywhere. You could probably throw the box at a wall and he would be fine (please don't do this).

So considering that Midas will have more articulation (we already know this to be true) he's going to be insanely awesome. If you are a Real Steel fan like me or just appreciate a good robot figure then you can have a lot of fun with Ambush. The figure looks terrific on display and he has some really unique articulations points. Just about everything on his body moves in some way. Even the basic flaps sitting on his feet or waist can be moved around.

EDIT: Forgot to mention one of the weirdest problems with this figure. I can understand the lack of a waist joint since the thing would probably collapse onto itself due to the design, but what I don't get is the neck joint. The figure CAN move its head to the left and right, but it reverts back to the middle and it seems dangerous to force it. So basically Ambush has to look forward. You can tilt his head to either side, but you can't turn it so he is looking toward other directions. It's a really weird thing and if this wasn't a boxing robot I would be annoyed, but because it is a boxing robot I find it surprisingly irrelevant and unimportant. In fact I really don't care much honestly. I feel like it makes sense you would have him facing forward at all times. I don't even know how far the robot could turn his head in the movie.

Oh yeah sorry for the massive posts before, but I do want to say one more thing. Ambush has made me glad I bought Midas. His strengths far outweigh any of his flaws which makes me really excited for Midas. Because of how Ambush turned out I will probably even get Atom even though I didn't really care for him in the film. I want to get the whole line.

And one thing I did not mention is that Ambush looks like a statue. That's one of the coolest things about this figure. ALL HIS JOINTS ARE PRETTY MUCH HIDDEN. If you see him posed next to another figure he just looks like a statue especially since he is so large. That's why I am not too bothered by articulation limitations here and there. I feel like I got a statue that also came with articulation as a bonus. It's really pretty amazing when you see it in person.

Hello everyone,
I received my Ambush and he is incredible. I do have one problem, his elbows joints are to loose and i can't put him in a punching pose because his elbows won't stay in position they just slowly slide back to straight arm position. Is there an easy fix for this or should I send him back and ask for a replacement?

thanks

Monger
09-17-2012, 07:57 PM
I was messing more with Ambush and actually this is pretty bad as far as potential quality control goes. Ambush's joints are either too loose or too stiff when it comes to the joint at the shoulder for his arms and the hips for his legs. If I shake Ambush, his arms will droop back down. This makes me think that a year from now he might not be able to hold his arms bend at least not as easily.

I hope 3A balances out the joints a little more for Midas. This could potentially be an issue in a year or two. Maybe not as much now. Quality control on joints seems to be pretty high though. Most people have the stiff legs and it sounds like your arms are too loose.

Dude, it's not the customs, it's a pretty normal thing to happen with figure like this.
Just reglue it & that's all. You're making an elephant out of the fly here.
It's like asking for replacement because one of the pouches disattached on a military figure or smth like that.
+ this particular part is glued from the inner side so you won't even notice if you will do smth wrong/will put too much glue on the part & etc.
For the record - just received 2x of them from Bamba & one of them had exactly the same problem. It's a very easy fix.
Unsatisfactory CS... Sheesh! They won't be able to even run this business if they will bother with replacements when stuff like that happens.
threeA is actually pretty good with replacements & CS when smth is going wrong but replace the whole thing when one small part just disattached and not even broken? I'm not sure this is the way to go. They will just get bankrupt in this case.

i agree , that loose part can be fixed, but i requested them for a replacement box since mine was all taped and torn at the edges, they said they didnt have,
I had send them at least 10 mails asking them to bubblewrap it properly before shipping knowing how the Indian customs would treat it and to inform me prior to shipping it out, they didnt andjust put it in a box and send it out,
so yes its kinda poor CS for a first timer like me from them, and like i said its not for a replacement figure but they didnt listen to my request about how to pack it out and no proper info on when they shipped it out,I only came to know it had arrived when it had reached my post office

But in case with customs it's more like your problem too, don't you think?
I mean if your country have serious problems with their own customs it's not:
1) manufacturer's fault
2) manufacturer can't do anything with it anyway (the only thing he can do is exclude your country from the shipping list)
If there at least was some kind of additional insurance, but as far as I know - there is not (just because they don't offer such service). And even insurance company can always be like: "What? Foreign customs opened the package? Naaaah, we can't do anything about executive system/government of the other country."
Just think about it - they will send you new box and your customs will turn it into crap again. Then what? You will ask for replacement again, they will send you one more box and the same story will happen. It just leads to nowhere.
If you have some crazy customs just buy from the local comic shops. That's the only thing you can do to avoid all the risks.
Especially if even the box is the problem. Some online comic stores even use warnings in their listings like: "If you need A+ condition box - please don't buy from us. Boxes can be damaged during shipping and we can't do anything about it."
Personally, I prefer to have perfect boxes too & keep most of them but I never ask for refund/replacement if seller did everything he possibly and normally could to secure the package.
If the figure itself is damaged - it's another story of course, but then again, package must be insured in this case (and that's not your case anyway).
And of course no offense mate! Just my 2 cents to your story!
Good luck with a shoulder fix!

i agree, but at least they could have heeded my instructions on how to pack it , I had got enterbay T800 and gantry too from sellers who followed my instruction on how to pack, it isnt a herculean task or anything, just some extra bubblewrapping to cover the box because in most case custom officer are just lasy to open packages which are packed like a bomb, i think i must have send 2-3 mails to them once i heard it was being shipped out,
i received my Iron man gantry the same day from a ebay seller and it arrived perfectly unopened, and its bigger than Ambush,
as for getting from local shops we dont even have a decent comic book shop forget action figure/statue shops lol

It's pretty hard to have individualized shipping instructions from each buyer. I understand what you are saying, I just don't know how realistic it is for any size company to have specialized shipping for every order. They may not have a system in place for that.

Thanks mate!

Joints are fine all over. I was careful with the hips as we've been warned they're too tight but mine moved smoothly. Just not to much movement in them before they start scraping on other parts...

There is a Real Steel section over at the 3A forums.

Midas, Atom and Noisy Boy are already confirmed. They said they aren't sure about Zeus or Metro yet. I'm just glad we'll be getting the other three, so anymore would be a bonus. :)

Just got my first ThreeA. The back plate fell out and one small broken peg, but I can glue it. The bigger issue is the shoulder joints are loose. BBTS is offering me $50 credit or full refund. I'm debating if I should keep it and try to repair the shoulders with superglue trick. What do you guys think?

Hi. I have ordered Noisy Boy few weeks ago. feel like getting atom and ambush too. this 3A stuff is not too bad compare to hot toys (IM). But why seem like not a lot of people talk about it compare to HT.

3A makes very cool robots but Ashley Woods figure designs are very different than Hot Toys. More conceptual and not so detailed/hyper realistic. Some dig it, some don't. Plus the way 3A sells with limited 24 hour releases and specials for those that are "members" makes some people angry. I like them though, and have gradually moved away from Hot Toys to 3A.

sharpnel

Ozzz, I read on 3A forum that some pulled out the shoulder sockets and applied superglue to tighten the joints. Did you do the same to yours? I'm tempted to try but afraid I could mess up.

BTW, 3A is signed on to produce figures from Transformers 4. I can't wait to see some pics. I can only imagine if 3A gets the Terminator license.
