Ok so here's a new project I'm working on. It is a a MacReady from The Thing. I'm not 100% done with him yet. I need to get his belt and gun holster. I also am going to finish working on a "Thing" monster from the movie to go along with him. Here's pics of him so far.....

First set of pics is him holding the flame thrower before I added the flares to his jacket.

I like it....and thats saying a lot. Because I generally dont like rooted synthetic hair. Rooted hair reminds me of Barbie, so I usually prefer sculpted. But you pulled it off nicely:duff.

Thank You!! I'm glad you like it because I am about to post my latest Jason from part 2 custom where I also used rooted hair. I think it came out pretty good as well but I guess all of you will be the judge. :)

What did you use for the snow/ice in the hair? Looks great!

I used a combination of White Gesso and medium gloss varnish. Pretty much the same method I used for the rest of the snow weathering on him. Thanks for the comment!!

Thank you... and I agree that we are lacking MacReady customs. It would be cool to see a company like Hot Toys do a Thing line and see more of the characters be made from the film.

Here are some updated MacReady pics. I've seen some others done with him holding a lantern so I decided to add that to mine as well along with some flame action coming out of his torch. I also had some fun making the lantern look lit up in the dark.

More pics soon of my Thing monster I am still working on....

Yeah that's true. I was thinking of finding soemthing that is bendy that I can use as a base to sculpt over. This way I can position the legs the way I want first and then sculpt over that. However what you mentioned is a good thought. I'm going to do a little digging. :)

Thanks

seb did a macready that had some spidery looking legs on it as well...........so you could check his out or pm him.
you could always just use copper wire (i have a ton of old coax i strip down to use for certain things i need) and then put your sculpting material/clay on that. you may want to leave some small gaps at the joints so you could bend it more easily without breaking your material. just a thought.........:)

That's a great thought. I was thinking about using some kind of wire but pulling off being able to bend them to pose after the fact would be awesome. Thanks for the input.

Digging the talent in this thread. For the flamethrower flames: have you ever considered a sturdier material? Something you can get the dust off of without fear of breakage? The molded flames from the McFarlane "Call of Duty" figures would work. If it gets dusty---you can just wash it,lol.http://thequarterbin.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/callofduty_flamethrower_photo_04_dl.jpg

Thanks and the flame on the thrower is actually cotton so I don't know if dust would affect it. However I figure that a piece of cotton would be easy enough to replace down the road if needed. :)

Thanks

the crab thing--you mean Norris's head on stilts? Spider thing? You need some wire with rubber foam cast around it. I need something similar for my (sometime) Fiend Without a Face, for the bendy spine. I have the brain, LOL--looks great!

EDIT--forgot how thin the legs are on that headspider thing...maybe just stiff, single core wire, with the knuckles carved/shaped with a soldering iron.

Hey Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I'm still working on that but yeah single core wire may be the way to go since it is so thin. I'll keep this thread updated as I go along.
