Not off-topic, and seriously great news. I will be really looking forward to collecting and building these sets! We just had people out to watch the Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition, and I dragged my Minimates out and had them around the snacks and stuff. I told my wife how bummed I was that Lego didn't get the rights to LOTR back in the day, and it was some crappy knock off (mega blocks, IIRC). She is more worried about how much time will be lost to LOTR Lego Games on Xbox!:yess:

Only interested in the Lego Fellowship minifigures. Looks like I'm going to have to buy the Mines of Moria, Weathertop and Gandalf arrives set to do this (though maybe the Shelob's lair set if I want Sam if that's Merry in the Weathertop set and Pippin with Moria). Makes me wish Art Asylum made a Gandalf the Grey minimate instead of Gandalf the white.

I can't believe that noone has pointed out that we may actually FINALLY get the entire Fellowship in one format. :lol

What about Toy Biz and Minimates?

cstojano
12-20-2011, 06:28 PM
Some of the recent Kingdoms sets are beyond awesome if you are into the fantasy genre. If you've never seen these check em out. Unlike many of the Castle themes Kingdoms is very understated and classic in appearance.

Also, the sets appear to be much more complex than we are seeing with the LOTR prelim pics which so far look like vehicles for minifig distribution. Maybe I know too much Lego but Shelob is an Aragog re-hash (totally expected I suppose) and Gandalf's arrival is straight Kingdoms theme in appearance.

Absolutely, this is what my comment about minifigs was referring to. Take Arrival of Gandalf, its a basic fantasy themed horse drawn cart with a blue magician. We have seen a horse drawn cart before and we have seen many magicians before so this is just labeling really. The release really feels 10 years too late. Hopefully they up the ante with Hobbit sets. Somehow I suspect no matter what Smaug looks like we will get a Hungarian Horntail/Ninjago dragon type of hybrid there.

I love the idea of the sets, and some of the elements are really nice (the Cave Troll and the Mines of Moria set looks great) but I shared similar dissapointment in the Gandalf set. It looks very generic, and doesn't scream Lord of the Rings or Hobbit. I was hoping that this set came with a bit of the front of Bag End when I read the title. I also knew that Shelob would be re-used Aragog from the Harry Potter sets, so I was hoping for more of the cave and webbing...

Weathertop looks neat, and I love the nazgul included. Helms deep could use a little more detail to really sell the design. I love the overall idea and some of the designs, but some elements seemed somewhat lacking in places.

Well not meaning to harp, but these wraiths are not much different than the customs that have been for sale for awhile now. It all just feels like missing the boat. Of course I will buy them, at a steep discount next Xmas.

Deak Starkiller
12-22-2011, 01:04 PM
Guys, these are PRELIMINARY designs. This is part of the Lego process, not meant for public consumption. They will look drastically different when they hit retail. Trust me.

Seaward
12-22-2011, 02:00 PM
Deak, even if they don't look radically different, I will be in for the sets!

I loved Lego as a kid, and got back into it somewhat with Star Wars, but passed all of those along to my nephews. I have been intrigued by some of the new sets for Harry Potter or Batman, but have held back. Lord of the Rings and Lego is a perfect match.

I just hope to see a little more of the detail in Helm's Deep, and a little more of a display or background elements for some of the other sets. Lord of the Rings has such a rich look to the various locales, I would hate to see anything lackluster in the Lego offerings!

Deak Starkiller
12-22-2011, 02:40 PM
I hear ya', trust me look at the LEGO aisle next time you're in the store. The POTC sets are top notch when it comes to detail. I am pumped, I am a bit of a LEGO nut. AND, the cool thing is Lego is modular...want a bigger Helm's Deep...you can make that happen. Just add more bricks. :lol

Mesa
12-22-2011, 02:50 PM
Agreed on better detail/quality. I just purchased the POTC Black Pearl and Queen Anne's Revenge. They are awesome. I'll on full board for the LOTR stuff when it's released.

Deak Starkiller
12-22-2011, 02:55 PM
Wow, I had no idea Scotty 2 Hotty. Also Lego MIGHT be able to release mini-figure sets of Uruk-Hai and the like. POTC & Prince of Persia included mini-figure 5 packs only available at the Lego stores both brick and mortar and online.

Seaward
12-22-2011, 03:05 PM
They did offer sets way back in the day with mail order, as I remember getting a set of random knights as a kid, but extra Uruks, Elves, Gondorian and Rohan soldiers would be great. It seems like with any of the toy lines, I end up having to get 9 of the nazgul too...

I know they will be more detailed in the store, so I am not worried about what I have seen, just some of the prelims are a touch generic and will be bumped up for sure by the time of release. The cave troll isn't even painted on the box in the video!

Mesa
12-22-2011, 03:07 PM
I saw them at Target and was like "hmmm.". The John Layman of "Chew" posted pics of Black Pearl on FB and I had to have. Will build very soon. Black Pearl is sold out lots of places.

The trick is trying to find them on sale and I didn't want to have to pay eBay prices. Some of these sets appreciate just as much as HT do once they are discontinued. .

Mesa
12-22-2011, 03:10 PM
Also, TRU sux. They mark up their sets $20 above retail.

Black pearl at Target is $99.99, saw it on sale once for $79.99 once.
At TRU it goes for $119.99 normally, never on sale.

WTF?

Deak Starkiller
12-22-2011, 04:23 PM

Of the bunch, Gimli looks the best to me. Love his helmet detailing. It will be interesting to see how they tackle gollum. I suppose they could do a molded body like the hobbits but his wiry frame must be a challenge given how blocky Lego tends to be.

Gloves are an easy fix, just swap the hands. I'm happy what I see on the evil side, gollum is...interesting. They managed to pull off the crouching pose and all, pretty clever. Orcs are cool, no surprises and the the wraith looks like the custom one floating around for so long, I suppose that guy is out of a job.

Yeah Lego didn't negotiate this license for 7 sets. Expect several years of released at least. Minimally we are looking at the Indiana Jones line but I think with the Hobbit plus 3 LOTR films we could be in for many sets.

Sorry thats what I meant, I figure there will be more sets down the line, but if I were to say start with SW lego.. way too many sets to catch up with.. but this I would be starting new and be able to get them all easier

cstojano
02-09-2012, 06:53 AM
The thing with SW Lego though is that they rehash the same sets so it is easier to get started AND the sets get better all the time. For example, unless you are completist (which doesn't seem to be common Lego collecting) the latest Xwing is much nicer than previous ones. Ditto for Slave 1, TIE Fighter, Y-wing, Landspeeder, etc. You get the point. When they do rehash a set the value on the older ones usually plummets. Plus you can still get the key set 10188 at retail. The point is, its never too late.

They did a little Toy Fair recap and had a table with some of the more noteworthy product reveals. For Lego they showed the "Friends" line for girls and the full Helm's Deep setup. They also showed a remote control Spider-Man that attaches to a wall and climbs all over it.

Yes, but they will probably be the first store to get the new sets and they sometimes have standard retail prices for a few days before they mark them up. Occasionally you can catch them on a sale early on before they exclude specific themes which they are notorious for. TRU has some crazy prices and sales gimmicks but good deals can be had if you pay attention.

TRU marks up their Lego sets. You are better off buying from shop.lego.com or pretty much any other retailer. On the plus side., they often run Buy One Get One Half Off but they usually exclude Star Wars Legos so I imagine LOTR might fall into the exclusion list too.

hmmmmmm.....Does Lego just sell the characters? I just want the characters and not the buildings/scenes.

They sell magnet-figures and some small character sets on shop.lego.com. I'm not an expert but the selection is kinda random. I think the exclusivity of the figures is a selling point for the sets so I wouldn't count on mini-fig individuals for LOTR, at least for a while.

Gandalf Arrives - $16.99 $12.99

Shelob Attacks - $24.99 $19.99

Urak-Hai Army - $34.99 $29.99

Attack on Weathertop - $79.99 $59.99

I ordered the same as you, Munch, but I went ahead and ordered Shelob too since it was also in stock and I have the Target Redcard which gives me free shipping on everything plus 5% off. Thanks for the heads up on the exclusive. :)

Checked ours last night as well....nothing at all. They barely had any Lego sets to speak of. Went back to Toy$ and spent too much on Helms deep set. :( But I don't want to risk our Target not getting them...and with the baby due soon I figured might was well grab them now...might not have time to hunt for them in 7 weeks.

I've got $20 in Lego points...figure I'll get Gandalf for free and that'll help offset some of the Toy$ damage.

And I thought Star Wars Legos were addictive. :panic:

need to buy the whole set for the fellowship!!!!!

I like Balin's grave, but I don't think I'd use anything else.

Is this the only way to get those 4 members of the Fellowship?

I have a friend that works at Walmart. She's gonna call me the day they show up. :)

However displaying them all will be imposible. Might have to find a friend with kids I can donate them to. :D

All the sets are now in stock at Lego.com!

You also get a free LotR poster with purchase. Spend $50 or more and you get an exclusive Hulk mini figure. I've been waiting a while for that Hulk so I was so happy that I could get the LotR sets today instead of something I really didn't need just to get him!

But I'd happily take extras off anyone's hands if they don't want him :monkey3

____ it.

I'm actually going to go for every single set. I haven't bought/built legos in a long time, a long, long time. I've only been buying a few Batman mini figures here and there since the debut of the first Lego Batman line (not the superheroes).

This seems extremely fresh to me and worth buying into. I definitely need the entire Fellowship in lego minifigure form as well as some orcs/Uruk-Hai. I can't pass them up. What I might do is sell the lego sets after I build them and keep the minifigures, I don't know.

Really liking these...well done! Can see a TON more potential with LOTR: Treebeard/Ents, Isengard, Minas Tirith, Dunharrow, Rivendell, Galadriel/Lothlorien, Watcher in the Water, Rangers, etc.

Love the Orc Forge set...very cool!
