I had been hoping for a Treebeard set so I'm happy that it's at least rumored for 2013.

I'd love to see some kind of LOTR add-on to Bag End, maybe Bilbo's birthday party with old Bilbo, some more hobbits and a dirty-face Merry and Pippin?

Can't wait for a Saruman.

It's hard for me to pick favorites because I'm still so jazzed that they are even doing LOTR. I'm just glad they exist.

It will be interesting to see how much of an insight the video game will be on future figures/sets. For example, will be get a huge buildable Sauron or the minfigure version you unlock later? Also, during that bonus level of "Middle Earth" many of the actual product sets are used there such as Weathertop and Helms Deep. It will be interesting to see if Rivendell, Orthac, Rohan, or any of the other areas will be done like they are on that level too.

I pre-ordered the first Force Unleashed game with them to get the exclusive figure. I went there at opening the morning it came out. No figures. They said "we'll take your name down, call us later." Called later - "sorry, we're not getting any figures." So I wasted my time and I paid more for the game than I should have.

That was it for me. Aside from some of their other crappy practices, if you can't guarantee a pre-order exclusive you're a pretty useless retail entity. I really only use them when they have a crazy sale (and the "new" game I want is actually new).

Have you seen these, awesome photos of the Hobbit's actors with their respective Lego mini figs, taken right after shooting:

Who wants to sell their Hobbit figures now??

LEGO must have paid a pretty penny for these marketing shots.

If you have even a remote interest in LOTR/Hobbit Legos I would suggest buying a couple small sets to try them out. These days Legos jump in price so much after they sell out or are discontinued that I would recommend getting anything you want rather than regretting it later. It's almost like HT in that regard.

Lego makes two waves per year - one in summer and one in winter. And during each wave something from the previous wave usually gets discontinued to accomodate the shelf space.

Never pay full price on a non-exclusive set. You can always get it cheaper on Amazon or elsewhere if you have the patience.

JonWes
12-19-2012, 10:16 PM
Yeah, paying $70 was just not going to happen. But I'll wait and see if a deal pops up. Then I might take the plunge. I just noticed that set is around $100 on Amazon from sellers!!! I guess maybe it's getting hard to find some places. It was weird, at the last Wal-Mart I was at they had plenty of all the sets and just one of that one. I'm sure that won't last past the holiday rush though.

I do like my little arrival of Gandalf set. I have no interest in getting sucked in because of all the other things I collect. But the Bag End set seemed like something special.

You shouldn't pay more than around 50 for Bag End. And do not buy from resellers on Amazon right before Xmas. Prices are highest right now.

Red Metal
12-20-2012, 07:57 AM
Personally, I buy direct from Lego for the VIP points system and because I feel good about paying them full price for a great product. Granted, I won't pay full price to any other store or seller.

cstojano
12-20-2012, 08:56 AM
I used to buy from Lego direct but the 5% points doesn't really cut it for me anymore since their prices have gone up so much. Now I only buy online using coupon deals, BOGO50, etc. Amazon is really the place to go and for smaller sets I generally wait for a 25% discount before pulling the trigger. Sadly my state is losing its Amazon sales tax exemption Feb 1 so the party is over somewhat.

Speak of the devil, the spiders, goblin, and wargs sets are on sale on Amazon right now.

Personally, I buy mainly just the store exclusives from LEGO Direct, or when they're running a promotion.

12-20-2012, 09:37 AM
Yes to the exclusives and yes I did but the Mirkwood set from Amazon just this morning, 21.97 shipped without tax? Why go to the store :) I am waiting for the goblin battle to drop below the 70 dollar threshold. Yeah I check too often.

Here's a link with pictures from 4 of the 8 sets that will be released in June 2013 (USA release date). There will be 5 LotR-sets and 3 new Hobbit sets.

Known sets are: The Wizard Battle, The Council of Elrond, The Battle of the Black Gate, Pirate Ship Ambush ( = Corsair ship)
The 5th set name is known as 'Frodo vs. The Ringwraith. Not sure if this 5th set will be released eventually.

For now just a pic of the box, but some more pictures of the finished model will follow soon. :)

I absolutely love this set. It has been quite a while since I was into Lego, but now the Hobbit sets pulled me back in. I got the "Escape from Mirkwood Spiders" and "Riddles for the Ring" sets for Christmas and those were great as well. But this is something else. The house is EXTREMELY detailed, both inside and out. It's actually got so many details that (while it is a great playset) I see it more as a collector's item. Lego could've skipped on a lot of the interior and finishing touches and still would've delivered a solid set. But as it is, it's nearing perfection!! :love

If you're still on the fence about it, then get off it now and buy this amazing set. You won't regret it!!

Buttmunch
12-29-2012, 01:26 PM
The figures in the Corsair ship are, but don't feel the set is. its such a small part of the film. A Oliphant would have been a better choice IMO. I hope the Dead figures are made of translucent green plastic like in the video game!

The Black Gate set looks great though, even if they have added the Eye of Sauron onto the gate instead of being a separate tower. Nice to get the Mouth of Sauron and Gandalf the White though.

I'm honestly surprised they went the little $10 set route for the Wizard Battle instead of a big $100+ tower set.

And the council of Elrond is nice, but some of the figure choices are odd. I mean Arowyn wasn't even there, but I'm glad to have the figure. And realy? Do we need another Gimli and Frodo? Why not an alternate outfit Aargorn and Gloin instead? Or go all out and put the full council there?

There is a rumour and confirmed by some Eurobrick members to have spotted other sets in a catalogue or some sort.

They talk about Treebeard and a Balrog set.

But we will see the first images popping up in a month or month and a half at the NY-toy convention.

Those were rumored before leak, but I haven't heard those reported as being confirmed just yet. They would be good, obvious sets though, especially if the video game versions are any indication.

I can't believe Azog wasn't included with Attack of the Wargs.

Yeah, the consensus is that he was added last minute when they went from 2 to 3 films. So the figure we got was probably to original Azog. Which is nice, because me might not have gotten this orc otherwise. We'll get Azog eventually.

Could this be a reason why Azog is pretty much all CGI? They didn't have time/recources/opportunity to shoot the part with a costumed actor? Or was it planned to be CGI all along?

It added melodrama and that's about it. I'll go out on a limb and say Azog and his head become separated sometime in the next 2 movies, such thrilling theater. I just don't get why PJ thinks the films need stuff like this. I try not to be too cynical of Hollywood when it comes to these movies but it gets very, very hard to NOT see much of this filler as the pure money grab the real Tolkien purists bemoan.

But what a mess we have here. A Lego MF of a do nothing character is a HUGE deal in the Lego universe when some have been begging for years for certain ones to be made. Yet we have no Azog right? Ditto for the action figures. We have Bolg and Grinnah but no Azog. Its just weird and bolsters claims that the Azog story line was a last minute throw in AFTER the 2>3 film decision was made.

Because that is what happened.

It's the exact opposite of Arwen originally being at Helms Deep. Instead of cutting things out, they added in Azog. Everything from the promotions to the marketing reflects this.

I think originally the company was going to get to Mirkwood and it would have ended around the barrel scenes. When it was originally conceived as a two film series, it was probably more concise and better paced. I'm sure Jackson and Co. will shed light on the issues in the features for upcoming home video sets.

One quick comment on this. Azog was the goblin leader at the battle of Moria, so that is accurate according to Tolkien's work. The difference is that Dain killed him at that battle and Azog's son Blog is the one leading the goblins at the battle of the five armies and I believe he is the one that gets to kill ____ and then gets to be killed by ____ (don't want to ruin it just in case someone hasn't read the book or PJ son how goes back to this story line).

I have loved the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings since I was 5. I got dressed up as a hobbit in elementary school for Halloween when nobody in North Florida seemed to know what a hobbit was and I did my 5th grade biography report and presentation on Tolkien. So I am about as big a fan as you can get without getting into the level of people who dress up or learn elvish or anything like that. The thing I have done from the beginning is view this trek into Middle Earth as PJ's interpretation of the story and by doing that instead of trying to pit the story and the movie against each other I have thoroughly enjoyed both. Yes there are things I might have wanted added or cut but it is his interpretation and at least for me the Lord of the Rings was very enjoyable so I'm more then willing to wait for all three to be complete before passing final judgement on the Hobbit.

Also way back when bbts first announced the pre-order of the action figures (before it became 3 movies) they had azog listed as one of the 6 inch figures. I pre-ordered him and eventually sometime after it became 3 movies they sent me the email saying the figure had been canceled.

BRING.IT.ON

This was one of the best parts of the book for me (and <cough? the ONE scene that turned me against PJ's handling of the original trilogy). I wonder how Ninjago the FB will look though.

Also I agree on the book vs film thing. The missteps bother me more than other people I suppose, especially when they seem so arbitrary and without good explanation. I just think these extended mini sub-plots detract from the overall story, and the Azog storyline is one of them IMO. Anyway, bring on more Lego. Batman 2 was much better than the first, having all the extra DC characters really added to it, but I dont think it should have been called "LEGO BATMAN 2" It should have been "LEGO DC SuperHeroes" or something. It was Open World like LOTR, but just not as vast.

Why I think the Bag End we got was totally uninspired. Now one can never expect MOC quality from Lego, that reality is, in a way, sad. Anyway, just thought I'd share this

You can say that about every set, but can you guess what that would have cost? All those pieces!

I didn't know the game had an exclusive Elrond minifigure..
Tempted as hell to buy the game.. :lol

You had to preorder the game at Game Stop to get the figure. I ended up selling mine right before the holidays since I'm not much of a minifig collector

I mean, I saw it on a shelf in my local gaming shop.

The PS3 game is in a slightly bigger box
that says it contains a free Elrond. :D

I used to be a sucker for those Lego SW exclusive minifigs,

pack 3 is an exclusive from certain offers such

There's 3 packs so far, the first two contains the likes of 2nd Age Sauron in his fair form, Smeagol, Corsair Pirate, Farmer Maggot, Beregond, Citadel Guard, etc. The third one appears to have Faramir in Armor and a Barrow-Wight.

Finished the game today and now doing extras. Doubt i'll get 100% even for LOTR, as i find the side quests and having to find all the items dull. I will get all the characters though, but that means having to smash up alot of scenery to get the studs!
Enjoyed playing the bonus level as Sauron and the Mouth and smashing up a smaller scale Middle-Earth, and when you get back to the Shire you can go inside Bag End and see old Bilbo and the red book!

We got all the Hobbit sets for Christmas and my son and I put them together one by one. The nice thing is that they spread all the dwarves around so you don't end up with duplicates except for Bilbo, and even then there are two different outfits for him in the different sets. I'd have to say that Bag End is my favorite purchase.

I haven't jumped into the LOTR Lego yet, but I'd love to start (especially with Helm's Deep as it's my favourite part of the trilogy) for my little guy down the road (who's just turning a year in a couple of weeks). The local Wal-Mart here has plenty of the Uruk-hai sets... I've got a $25 TRU GC I could put towards Helm's Deep... Very tempting. What set has a Legolas?... Would I have to get a Mine's of Moria?

Mines of Moria is the only set with LOTR Legolas in it so far. Plus it's a good way to get started on the Fellowship. If you don't mind the quantity of stickers, it's a great set.

I would recommend getting the Uruk-Hai army, because as an army-builder set I've noticed it selling out more and more.

Avoid TRU. Their LEGO items are so over priced its not even funny. You'd be lucky to buy Helms Deep at retail price after your Gift card. Amazon is the best place for Lego IMO.

Yeah, my local (cross border) Wal-Mart is very collector friendly (there were at least seven kits over there) but if I snooze I'll probably lose.

True, everything is overpriced there-- but the last time I popped in there was really nothing that had any interest for me so I thought the GC was an idea/incentive... I'll keep on the lookout.

Definitely try to use the 25 dollar gift card for a 25 dollar item or close to it. They have heavy mark ups at TRU so that often even with a sale they are still overpriced by Amazon standards.

I just came back from across the border. I grabbed two of the Uruk-hai army sets (there were four there) $27 each and I also grabbed one of the Gandalf/Frodo (9469) sets so I'm officially into LOTR Lego (heaven help me...). Amazon prices look loco (right now) and most of the Evil-bay ones also don't make much sense so I think, unless something lese pops up, I'l wait to see some of the Lego deals that TRU usually have and use the GC towards the Helm's Deep set. The only other sets I really'd like to get are The Mines of Moria (9473) and from the Hobbit (79003) An Unexpected Gathering (Bilbo's home)... The only other set over at my collector friendly Wal-Mart was the Attack of the Wargs (79002)-- besides the dwarves that set isn't really very interesting.

Good

- Saruman looks great!

- Gandalf the White

- Mouth of Sauron

- Aragorn in Gondorian Armor

Bad

- At least change Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli up a bit. No capes? C'mon.

- They could have easily included Old Bilbo with Sting instead of Frodo for the council of Elrond set. And Gimli? Who needs Gimli?

- No new Moria orc helmets I guess. :(

Buttmunch
01-27-2013, 09:33 AM
Aragorn has been inaccurate from the get go, so why they aren't fixing him is beyond me! And yeah, another Frodo and Gimli are useless at this point. Make those Gloin and Bilbo and you've got a great set.

I really wish one of the Orcs in the Pirate ship set had the skull on his helmet. That would have been awesome.

Disappointing that they didn't give Aragorn Anduil in either of the sets. I already knew that the Mordor orcs wouldn't have unique helms/armor and that there's yet another Frodo and Gimli instead of Old Bilbo and another character but, I dunno.

I guess they spent their 'mold budget' on the Mouth of Sauron, Gandalf/Saruman hairpiece, Eagle, 2 new 'elf' hairmolds, ...

It doesn't bother me that much.

Good

- Saruman looks great!

- Gandalf the White

- Mouth of Sauron

- Aragorn in Gondorian Armor

Bad

- At least change Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli up a bit. No capes? C'mon.

- They could have easily included Old Bilbo with Sting instead of Frodo for the council of Elrond set. And Gimli? Who needs Gimli?

- No new Moria orc helmets I guess. :(

Agreed on all.

I would've liked to see a Faramir in Gondor armour, but can't complain with the excellent new figs.

Faramir in that armor wouldn't be with any of those sets.

The pirate ship set really needed the ghosts cast in clear plastic (like they are in the game) and one of the orcs really should have been the one with the skull on his helmet. :duh

You know, I'd really like to see a Peter Jackson as Corsair minifigure eventually. Even if it was some crazy promo figure, I think that would be fitting.

I think the Pirate ship is a pass. Though I am in the minority and like the Black Gate though I think it is way small.
