View Full Version : Bring it on: DEAD MAN'S CHEST!

My girlfriend gave up her tickets to see POTC: DMC last night (because I hate seeing films at screenings) to a friend and here's what he had to say about the new Pirates:
First things first: I saw Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest last night. My friend Mark scored a couple tickets to a press screening of the film. It was at the mighty Arclight Theater a couple blocks from my home, and Leonard Maltin sat in the row behind us.
What did I think of it? Well, frankly, in the words of Queen Victoria, "IT ^^^^^*ING RULED!" The best sequel I've seen in years by a wide margin.
It was so imaginative, so full of character, and action, and nuance, and spectacle. It actually managed to build off of the first movie and deepen and expand on the world and its characters. Johnny Depp is fantastic in the role he'll be remembered for (obviously), Bill Nighy gives the dreaded Davy Jones a soul, and even with the addition of new characters and situations, everyone has a reason to be there. No character feels shoehorned into the script. Amazing.
If the third film is as good as this one, I'd say Pirates of the Carribean might be the best adventure movie trilogy ever. Cause you know, it's funnier than Lord of the Rings, And? It has PIRATES, and that makes all the difference.

Lord of the Rings had pirates, the corsairs.
Btw, I've heard there's something after the credits on Dead Man's Chest, so just a head's up.

I can't wait either! One week from Tomorrow! I would bet there is something after the credits. Remember Jack the money took another Aztec coin out of the chest for the first film. Perhaps Jack the mokey will be in this one (cursed of course).

I will be checking this one out for sure probably Saturday after release. If it's as good as everyone says it is I see myself ordering that Cinemaquette.

But, but, what about Indiana?? As much as I love POTC, I have a hard time believing it could ever take the place of the Indiana Jones trilogy! Not that it wouldn't be cool if it did, just that it will be hard to beat Indy...

Indiana Jones if a great trilogie. But I believe it's unfair the compare it with Pirates of the Caribbean.

Oh I know... POTC was one of the coolest movies I have ever seen!! I must have watched it in the theater at least 10 times.. (Lived in Japan on a Navy base, tickets were 3 bucks!) We used to get drunk and go see a late showing, and I have to say...
Being drunk makes that "Why is the Rum gone?" line that much MORE hilarious!

Poor Chris Atkins, he's from my hometown of Rye, Ny, he was discovered while prepping a boat at the American Yacht Club (a summer job). Nice guy too, I remember having a beer with him at a local bar years ago (when his career had faded) and he was complaining Hollywood was just a meat market.
Well, there's always the lagoon... ah, memories...

I saw it...
I thought part 1 was sort of slow but of course had it's fun moments as well.
Part 2 is EXACTLY like part 1. It has the same EXACT feel to it, only Davy Jones
is probably 1 of THE coolest CGI characters I've EVER seen! OH! & there's an
incredibly fun twist at the end, which sets up part 3. (didn't stay till after the
credits to see if there was anything there. Hope there wasn't anything special)
Part 3 is called: "POTC: World's End" btw.
After seeing Superman Returns on Tuesday & POTC2 on Wed, I'd still say
that SR was the better movie though. But then again, I'm prob biased...

Will slack Jack return to the high seas?
Johnny Depp says we might see more Jack Sparrow
19 Jun 2006 10:13am
Johnny Depp obviously enjoys slapping on the make-up and crazy costumes of Captain Jack Sparrow for the Pirates Of The Caribbean films. The notoriously fame-shy thesp has found a way to make big budget films and also keep his artistic integrity intact. Well, most of it.
And it sounds like he’d be willing to set sail again, even though he’s just been through a marathon shooting session for the Pirates sequels. "He's a blast to play," Depp told Newsweek. "I'll be in a deep, dark depression saying goodbye to him. I'll keep the costume and just prance around the house, entertain the kids. Maybe Pirates 4, 5 and 6. If they had a good script, why not? I mean, at a certain point, the madness must stop, but for the moment, I can't say that he's done."
Avast! And heave ho! And other pirate clichés! He could be jigging in the rigging for some time to come! Sorry, don’t know why we said that. Dead Man’s Chest sails into cinemas on 6 July.

Yeah,
It's hard to explain when you LOVE certain aspects of a movie... but don't
love the movie itself. (Maybe that's what the few who dislike SR feel?) The
GREAT thing about this POTC sequel is that HONEST TO GOD, it's as if they
never stopped filming. It's that similar to the 1st in EVERY WAY!
& I absolutely agree that Jack Sparrow is THE role that Depp will be remembered
for. He's just fun to watch, even when you *think* you've had enough
of him. (& seriously, you won't believe that Davy Jones' face is CGI! You'll
wonder how it was done at all!)

I already feel that way. When I saw the second trailer I couldn't tell if it was make up or CGI. I knew it couldn't be real, but if that was another option I might have chosen that over make up or CGI. He looks awesome from the trailers.
I too have heard about Rush being in this but haven't heard how (ie flashback or just brought back). He has been off and on IMDB as being in 2 and 3 so who knows... well those that have seen it

I dare say that Cap'n Jack will go down as a classic film character in the same stratusphere as Bond and Indy.
I'm very glad to hear the good reviews for the new movie and look forward to it. I don't put much stock in AICN reviews, but Harry said that everything in the film can be traced back to Jack, unlike some aspects of the first. So Jack is front and center the whole time and every other character is there just to support him.
I can't wait to see his dad in the 3rd one!

I seriously doubt it. Am I the only one that didn't like the first one at all? I own the DVD, and have only watched it once. I'll probably revisit it sometime soon in order to watch the sequel.

OMG, I just can't contain myself - I CANNOT WAIT FOR THURSDAY MIDNIGHT!!! I've been listening to the POTC 2 soundtrack all day, which I downloaded from iTunes. It's MOST excellent - great use of organs. It also came with a downloadable CD booklet with photos - that image of Elizabeth in her wedding gown in the rain is great, as is the one of them approaching, I guess it's the voodoo priestess' house, in a rowboat, surrounded by people in water holding candles. And everything I've heard about Bill Nighy's Davy Jones has been excellent - can't wait to see it on the big screen!
Anyway, hope you all are having a great 4th of July! I highly recommend getting the the POTC: Dead Man's Chest soundtrack, which was released today, to put you in the mood for the movie - it DEFINITELY deserves some dancing Chewies! :chew :chew :chew

Every single midnight showing I have ever gone to (and they have been many) has been at the time printed on the ticket. If it says 12:01 am July 6th, that means it is tonight. Dusty is talking either to a) someone who doens't know what they're talking about b) someone with a cruel sense of humor or c) it is a small theater (ie not MEGAPLEX 3000 screens) with different ideas on how the am-pm thing works.
Josette
07-05-2006, 03:40 PM
Originally, I was very confused and thought for sure it would be tomorrow. But because computers are very literal on AM-PM, I was afraid I would miss it if I didn't confirm, so I went to the theater a few days after I purchased the tickets, and sure enough, I was told said "you'll come on wednesday".
I just did an online search for showtimes in Los Angeles and Hollywood and there are no showtimes, ZERO, until "Thursday" 12:01 am which is July 7th, the day this Movie opens.
I recommend doing your own online search for your theatre's showtimes first and then follow it up with a call to confirm it with the Theatre manager.
Josette
07-05-2006, 03:50 PM
I searched mine online on my theater's official website (national amusements) and mine is listed under Thursday, July 6th...12:05 am.
I searched mine online on my theater's official website and mine is listed under Thursday, July 6th...12:05 am.
I know Josette, but the online search goes by day of week, no showtimes Wednesday, earliest showtime Thursday 12:01 am which is July 7, followed by next showtime Friday July 7 10 am and so on.
I have never heard of a movie which opens on a given Friday (midnight Thursday) actually open on a Wednesday night. Again, best to check with the Theatre manager.
Or just show up of course... to be safe...

Of course there aren't any show times wednesday, because the show starts at 12:05 am...that's thursday. If I go tonight, like my ticket says, I will be seeing the movie on July 6th...which is exactly what's marked on my ticket and what it says on the website's listing.

On Moviefone.com, for my theater, this is the listing:
Showtime & Date
12:01am the evening of
Thu, Jul. 6th
Even though 12:01 is technically 7/7, they are still counting it as 7/6 at this particular theater.
But as far as Josette's concerned, I don't think she needs to worry, since she has checked it out with her theater and it's also listed as 'Advance Screening' in the listings - it's just no fair that there's none here where I live :monkey2

:rotfl I can't stand those either! I remember when they had the Super Dale ones. Those were bad too. It is my favorite theater too. It makes it even more special since I went to Jordan High (the new one, not the old). If you can, go to a reserved seating showing. I saw MI:3 and Cars that way and it was really nice not having to stand in line for 2 hours. The sooner you get your tickets, the better your choices of seats are.
I will definately post my opinions of the film. I'm so excited for it though, unlesss it is just horrible (unlikely) I'll probably love it. Davy Jones and his crew look so cool and from what I've seen pretty real looking (well as real looking as a octo-beard man can look). Hopefully in about 24 and 1/2 hours of this post I will be standing in line for Pirates!

I just finished re-watching the original. There are two mentions of "Davy Jones' Locker" so it seems they had Jones in mind from the begining. Less than 24 hours now!

Their using the phrase "Davy Jones' Locker" does not suggest anything. It's used to refer to the bottom of the ocean. Pirate slang.
The sequels were never planned, but after the huge and deserved success of POTC:COTBP they knew they had to.

Well, I just saw the movie, and I'm ready to give a nice and sweet 100% spoiler free review.
It's a fact that I went into this with uber high expectations. I knew I'd be heartbroken to no end if I somehow was dissapointed. I was literally one of the first fans that the first movie had. I was terribley excited in anticipation for it 2 long years before it came out. I was intrigued by the story so damn much. I find fantasy type movies more fun and inventive than anything else they make these days. Simpily put, I like to see movies for the fun of it. Every bit of news that came onto the internet was swolled up by me. The thought of undead pirates that turned into skeletons in the moonlight made me TOO happy. For two years the movie was at the top of my "Must see" list. Goodness knows, the 2 year wait was totally worth it. The movie blew me away, and I was proud to say that I supported it from its conceptions. I had to go into depth of my Pirates "history" here just to show you my passion for this movie series. I'm a big ol' fan. But now, enough about a ship called "The Black Pearl," but instead let's talk about a certain "Dead Man's Chest."
Simply put, I give my grandest rate of approval. Of course, I have no ratings scale myself, so I guess you could say that I loved it to no end. No fan of the first one should be dissapointed by this one. It's a fact that no movie is perfect, and this one isn't perfect. It was a REALLY long movie. Aye, but that can be a good thing, OR a bad thing. For those of you who say "the longer, the better" will be very happy. Those who like movies to be on the short side, you're outta luck. But I don't think there is a single person on this board who has a problem with movie length. We all love our LOTR, and have no complaints about length. Hell, we beg for thing like the extended edition's cause we just want more. Also, there never really was any downtime like some parts in LOTR (that's not a complaint.) The movie is filled to the brim with action and comedy. Never really is a dull moment.
I loved everyone in the movie. The acting was damn fine I think. It won't be winning any academy awards, but that means jack squat these days. The academy doesn't care about these kinds of movies. (I've said it before and I'll say it again. LOTR was an exception. I firmly believe they didn't want to give it ANYTHING at all, but only did because they would have TOTALLY lost faith in the common movie-goer, which actually happend some 4 or 5 years ago anyway.) My favorite addition to the cast most certinaly would be the devious Davy Jones. I can say with full honesty that Davy Jones is easily the best looking piece of CG I have EVER seen in my life. NO joke. Hell, everything about this movie looked spectacular. Might be the best looking movie I've ever seen.
If you were a big fan of the story in COTBP, fear not. We still have more imagination in this story than anything else that's been made since... well... the last Pirates movie. It's a hell of an adventure story. In this story you see lots of new, and also familiar faces. In some of the last moments of the movie you will be reintroduced to a character you'd never expect in a million years. It sure made me happy.
FYI, this movie sure as hell itself sets up for the next movie being released next year. There is most certainly stuff to be done. They really did pull a Matrix with this one. One part of the story completed, but the overall story is not yet finsihed, ya know? Course ya do. I dare say that the end made me sad. It did. It takes a lot to make me sad in a movie.
Us fun loving movie goers will eat this movie up. I can see why the critics have problems with it. Sorry if it lacks drama n' such, ya damn critics. These days, it's fashionable to hate on these kinda movies. They just don't understand that movies like this are meant for the entertainment value. I bless the souls of the people who made this movie, cause they weren't making it for the Academy, they MADE it for the fans. The movie exceeded my expectaions on every level. I'm sure that not everyone will agree on this board on the movie. We all have our opinions. Everything I just said is MY opinion, and nothing more. Critics think they tell you the facts on movies. Mere opinons. I beg of you that you don't jam stuff down our throats on this board that what you say is fact. Have some courteousy. I'm gonna get mighty upset if one of you says in a post, "It sucked." No, it's just your opinon that it does. You SHOULD say, "I think it sucked." That's fine and dandy. If one person says that it was totally great, but another person says that it sucked, we face a paradox. A movie cannot be good and bad at the same time. OPINONS! Savvy?
By the way, Sideshow needs some Premium Format POTC. Bless my soul, I'd give anything to have a PF Davy Jones and Barbossa. Hell, if ya ask me, you'd think they would have saved the big guns like Boba Fett PF for the SDCC. They must have some MAJOR license revelations at the SCCC if ya ask me. Pirates? Hope so. That Cinamaquette Jack looks awesome, but is WAY out of the price range for most of us. POTC PF would be a dream come true.

PURE GIDDY-NESS! True, this movie is pretty long, but I honestly didn't really notice until it was over, and I was shocked to discover that it was 2:30! Seriously, this flick is the most creative adventure story I think I have ever witnessed! From the sets, to the costumes, to the make-up, to the special effects, this POTC shows you things you would NEVER have thought of (Davy Jones' crew is pure genius... I'm going back to watch it again tonight just to see the crew again - oh, and also to see an EXTREMELY hilarious sequence of scenes that had me laughing to the point of tears - I won't spoil it for you!).
True, like all stories, this one combines parts of other classic stories (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Princess Bride, The Odyssey, blah blah blah), but manages to put a brand new spin on them. I love how they played with the characters and made some of them do unexpected things (Elizabeth most of all, and Jack to a certain extent - I think Will's time is coming in the 3rd).
I'm pretty mad at the critics. I think some have been totally unfair, and most of the ones who've given it bad reviews seem to just have copied each other, line for line. Also, about people saying that they hate how earnestly Orlando Bloom delivers his lines - well, that his CHARACTER, sillies! Will is the earnest, optimistic, naive, true-hearted side to Jack's selfish, indecisive, jaded, lying side. And I think we may see a turn-around of Will's character in the third one, after what he witnessed at the end of this one (sorry to be so oblique, but I really don't want to spoil it for anyone! I went in pretty unspoiled and enjoyed the HECK out of the surprises.) Oh well, I loved it, and that's the most important thing, right? :D
On another note, I have read some reports from viewers who didn't love the first saying that this one was better for them. I, on the other hand, LOVE the first (love it), and think that maybe this one is a TINY notch below it, due to some minor editing issues. Plus, the suprise of Captain Jack will never be the same. Our first-ever glimpse of him in the leaky boat in CotBP is classic. I would give it a DMC a 4/5 - there are definitely faults, but they are easily overlooked for the pure entertainment value that this film possesses.
LIKES:
Captain Jack, of course. ESPECIALLY in any scene that had him running. I LOVE that ridiculous arm-flailing run! And you can just tell how much Johnny Depp LOVES this role.
The recurring rum theme. Pirates love their rum!
The ENTIRE cannibal island sequence of events - AWESOME, from beginning to end!!!! If you don't love this part, something is seriously wrong with your inner child, and you should probably have that checked out. Even though it is pretty useless to the entire plot, it's totally hilarious. It's also WAY over-the-top (but the difference between over-the-top in this movie to over-the-top in something like the Superman plane sequence is that this movie KNOWS it's over-the-top and is doing it purely for the laughs).
The brawling scene on Tortuga - Jack loves his hats!
The Kraken. And the way they call the Kraken.
Davy Jones' crew and ship. And organ. And music box. And Davy himself - I couldn't take my eyes off him everytime he was on screen.
The final shot (not the one after the credits - which was cute, although not necessary - but the one right before the credits roll. I'm not going to spoil it, but the audience reaction to it was very very very cool).
There are some incredibly quote-able lines in this one, just like in the first. I can't think of them right now, because I need to see it again - plus I have a horrible memory for movie lines - ha!
The scenes on the voodoo priestess' island - very cool set. It's almost straight from the ride, with the fireflies and the old house in the swamp. The actress was wonderful too.
And please allow me one little, tiny fan-girl moment - I sqeeee'd like an adolescent girl when Orlando's shirt was torn off him :o I can't help it, I love that boy.
DISLIKES:
Um....
Oh, I didn't like that they kept dredging up some old jokes from the first movie. Some of them went over well, but others fell flat.
And, whenever Johnny Depp wasn't on screen, part of me was sad, so it proves that the movie would really be nothing without him. But, luckily, it DOES have him, so there's nothing to worry about :lol
And, some parts were a little confusing, but it's all explained by the end. So if you get easily perturbed when plot points are not explained RIGHT AWAY, this movie WILL frustrate you.
Addition on edit: The after-credits scene was pretty dumb and worthless
Oh, and, um, well, that's about it :)
BEWARE - HERE THAR BE SPOILERS!

Three questions:
1) What the HECK was that dice game about? I had no clue what the rules were, and what did lying have anything to do with it? How can you lie, when it's a game of chance and you have no idea what dice you threw? I'm thinking they must have cut out a fair bit of the explanation part to make it move faster. It was a great scene, establishing character and what-not, but I was fairly confused by the rules of the game.
2) What was that island that Jack was on at the beginning, when he stole the drawing of the key? Was it a 'pirate torturing' island? I wish it would have been explained better. But it sure did look cool, along with pretty much every other set in the movie!
3) Will Jack hardly be in the 3rd one? Since the whole deal is that they have to travel to the end of the world to find him (how exactly will that work anyway? I hope he tears apart the Kraken from the inside, like the guy at the end of Brain Dead/Dead Alive!!), I would expect that they don't find him and the Pearl until the end. Although Barbossa is rockin', I will miss Jack if he's not in the 3rd very much :(
I don't think I can wait another year to find out what happens!!!

I'm not reading the spoilers, but it seems the consensus of the critics that there's too much happening in the film and it's non-stop. To me that doesn't seem like a reason to put down the movie. I think all the critics were desperate to hate the first one, (a film based on Disneyland ride? Has to be horrible!) but they were unable to critize it, so they've taken it out on this film.
I'll see it tomorrow, but I can't see not liking it.

Non-stop -- in an action-adventure film? Who would have thought?
I think a lot of critics forget that that's the whole point of a popcorn adventure movie. Its a "movie" not a "film". There's been way too many action "epics" that spend way too long on character development that is unnecessary and usually backfires by slowing the pace. I keep finding myself saying "come on, let's go"... Sounds like POTC 2 got it right. I'll know tonight.

There's a time for drama (your Brokeback Mountains) and a time for fun (Pirates.) There certainly are some critics out there look into Pirates for the enjoyment of it. Sadly, it seems as if they are the critics that "apparalently" don't mean much these days. I lost my faith in critics a long time ago. I rarely watch many dramatic movies these days. Heck, the last two movies I watched before Dead Man's Chest were Krull and Willow. I look for the fun in those movies.
My #1 rule when watching a movie: A movie can be bad, but still be fun.

SO, now that we're on the subject of Pirates of the Caribbean, just think of the possobilities if Sideshow got their magical hands on this license. I have no idea if Disney would be out to merchandise on the license, but seeing how they are letting THREE different companies make action figures for the movies, I'm sure it can be Sideshows.
Think of the awesome premium formats you can get. In Jacks case, you would give him one of his commanding looks, with all the crap he needs like his compass, and sword, and don't forget his hat. The costume itself would be totally awesome.
Now, think of Barbossa. For him they could do something like showing him part skeleton-like. Half human, and half skeleton. The scene that comes to mind for me is when he said that "Ya best start believin' in ghost stories, Miss Turner." He has his outstretched bony hand, clothes coming unwravelled, and his face melts away. THAT'S a dream come true. I'd much prefer if like had his face was skeleton, and half normal, but that's just me. I'd certainly settle with a 100% normal looking Barbossa, but not thrilled at all by a fully skeleton form of him. Just me.
My most wanted though, as you probably already know, would be Davy Jones. The look of him is like nothing else I've ever seen. I know Sideshow could give him this slimey look to him if they wanted to. The costume on him would be crazy cool since there are all of this crustacean things growing all over him. I know Sideshow could pull off something awesome with him. Hey, the guy's got a crab claw for an arm. You know you want it.
If Sideshow hasn't considered this yet, they should do so now. I'm sure if they were to EVER do something Pirates, they'd surely be doing it by now to capitalize on the movie. Hey, it's business, I don't mind. SDCC? Eh? Eh? Small chance, but I can hope. From this point forth, POTC is now my dream line.

Sideshow needs to rock SDCC with an annoucement saying they've got this line. All three movies please and 1/6 and PF Figures. The Skeleton and Jones Pirates would be a bit tuff in 1/6 but not undoable for Sideshow. At least make a 12" Jack!

Just watched the original in preparation of the sequel tomorrow. I must be dense because I finally figured out something that has always bothered me.
SPOILERS FOR PotC 1 (if you're reading this thread and haven't seen the first - get thee to Blockbuster!)
It always bugged me that Jack showed no evidence of being cursed until the end of the movie. He ate, drank and appeared normal in moonlight. It was only AFTER he palmed the coin from the chest that he became cursed. That's why he cut himself and blooded the coin to toss it to Will. He ended the mini-curse on himself at the same time Will ended the big curse. So after the credits the monkey curses himself by lifting a coin rather than reinstating the whole curse.
This had really bothered me and I'm so glad I finally realized it. Also this viewing impressed on me how great the character development in this movie truly is. Even tertiary characters like Commodore Norrington and the Governor have consistent character development along with the 3 main characters.
I do believe PotC 1 will live on in film history as a great adventure/fantasy movie. I hope the franchise can ive up to it.

Just got back from seeing Dead Man's Chest, and I enjoyed it. There was a lot of fun stuff, and I liked how some of the characters were developed from the first film, and how they handled an apparent plot hole that had always bugged me from "Curse of the Black Pearl." I think that this movie has just the right tone to get away with certain gags and lines, while overall having a darker/edgier/more violent feel than the first. Johnny Depp slipped right back into character for this film and if you enjoyed his performance in the first one you will be just as happy watching him prance around in this one.
As a middle chapter in a trilogy, I had a similar feeling leaving the theater as when I saw Matrix Reloaded. It doesn't stand on its own so much as leave you with the feeling that you just saw half a movie and now you want to see the rest of it. And I don't mean that to sound critical--I really liked how there was absolutely no resolution of plot points whatsoever. It feels like a big intermission before the whole thing gets resolved next summer. But some people tonight felt that the end was abrupt and jarring. The movie literally ends smack in the middle of the plot and we all have to wait until next year to see what happens next. Personally, I think that's part of the fun.
After seeing the trailers, my main concern was that there would be too much CGI. Well, there was and there wasn't. I have to say that the effects on the villains were well done. Some of the cursed pirates were obviously CGI, but in many cases I didn't know where the makeup appliances ended and the computer work began. While the makeup effects were done very well, I just think that the villains, particularly Davey Jones as the central baddie, didn't work as well as in the first film. In the first one, CGI effects were used in certain "moonlight" shots, but most of the time you were looking at real actors. This time, Davey's appearance was realized through CGI in every single shot, and (while cool-looking) that can't compare with a real actor--particularly with an actor as charismatic as Geoffrey Rush. The character itself was also a bit more of a flat out villain and didn't have a certain level of audience sympathy and enjoyment and humor like Barbossa did in the first movie.
While I enjoyed it a lot, the last five seconds of the movie made me realize what it had been missing, and got me completely excited to see the third one. That one is going to be awesome and resolve everything in a very entertaining way. I can't wait. While this one doesn't quite stand on its own, it is a great "Act I" of the five hour, two-act Pirates sequel. Seen together, 2 and 3 are going to be one big entertaining story.

Yeah Tom, those were my exact feelings!! I loved the movie, and they carried on the plot from the first while also reintroducing Jack in yet another hilarious way. But it did feel as though it was half a movie, and that's the way it's supposed to be. Davy Jones was very well done, and the animation was spot on perfect, but I would have loved to see a little more done with his character. They did in one scene, and you could see that somewhere deep inside him was a dark sad place where he mourned his lost love... Great scene.
Either way, this movie was an excellent continuation of the Pirates story and I loved every minute of it. The Cannibals were hilarious and all of the madness that went on during their stay at that island had me in stitches. Jones and his crew were awesome and the designs for some of them will probably never be forgotten in cinema history. Again, Jack carries the story, but they gave us so much more with Will, Norrington and Elizabeth. And that last development at the end of the film is gonna make Pirates 3 that much more exciting!!
This is the Empire Strikes Back of the Pirates films and it does it's job well. I'm super excited to see the next one and I recommend this movie to any fan of adventure films. Every last freak should see it!! :D

BEYOND HERE THAR BE SPOILERS!!!
I really hated the ending in the middle of it. Very frustrating, although seeing Barbossa was a complete surprise for me. I agree with Dusty about the dice game - also very frustrating. Jones was great. If I hadn't known that his face was CG I would have assumed it was animatronic and make-up, best CG we've seen in a long time. I think his henchman were way overdone for the most part though. Jones, the hammerhead and the conch head I think were the best - the rest it was hard to tell what was going on with them. They looked just like lumpy pirates.
The three way fight on the island was hilarious and really the only time that had me grinning for its entirety. I remember at least 3 ocaissions that happened in the first one.
Loved the call backs to the first film - I was the only one laughing though - maybe cause I just watched the first one last night. "Hello Elizabeth. (turns and whispers) Hide the rum."
I really like bringing back Norrington. I liked him in the first movie and it seems he'll have an even larger part in the 3rd.
I liked the movie a lot but these things bothered me:
I didn't feel that Jack had as much to do in this one and he wasn't as funny. I think Depp fell into just being wacky a couple of times that wasn't completely true to the character. I HATED the love triangle. Sure it gives a great dynamic to the Will/Elizabeth relationship, but it just isn't believeable.

SPOILER ALERT!!!
I just remembered the earlier scene in Tia Dalma's hut when the camera pans to the monkey in a side room looking extremely interested in the boots of a certain corpse laid out on a table. At the time, I thought, "Ewww gross, she has a body back there." Now I'm thinking: "Aha!" Looks like she got hold of Barbossa's body and brought him back from the dead via voodoo and whatnot. So he is not still "alive" in undead form from the curse in film one as some have suspected.

I didn't notice that body, but Jack the Monkey did seem fine staying at her shack and not running off with Jack and crew again. I belive Jack swipes some sort of necklace from her shack and a ring. In the Visual Guide book for Pirates of the Caribbean, it says it is a magic necklace. Could this be how they might get Jack back? It will be very interesting to see how Barbossa came back. I'm just glad he finally got his apple. I always felt bad that he never got one in the first film.

I woke up this morning to find that it made $55.5 mil on opening day! Soundly beating the opening day record that ROTS had previously held, and well on it's way to beating Spider-Man's 3-day record of $114 mil! I'm very happy for POTC, Gore Verbinski, Johnny Depp, the screenwriters, and everyone involved with this franchise. Like the success of LOTR, it shows that, if more movie studios were willing to take chances (Depp's portrayal of Jack was a pretty big chance to take!), the better - and more creative - movies we would get!

Also, did anyone else notice in Tia Dalma's hut when Jack swiped the ring, it showed a close-up of a locket that was heart-shaped and looked very very similar to the music box that Davey Jones had. I noticed that on my second viewing because I really like that scene when Will is stealing the key and the music box puts Davey back to sleep. Is Tia Dalma Davey Jones' true love?? At the very least, I'm sure she knows who it is.
Also, on the second viewing, some of my favorite parts:
The wheel sequence. I just love how the people fighting stop to look at the wheel every time it roles by, and then continue on with what they were doing once it's past. A lot from that sequence, as well as the cannibal island sequence, reminds me of Indiana Jones, and not in a bad, "you so copied that!" way, but in a great, swashbuckling way! And watching the creative ways they passed the key from person to person was great fun!
"You WILL watch" - Davey Jones to Bootstrap Bill as he calls the Kraken to destroy the ship that Will is on. I love the relationship that has been established between Will and his father. Like, not so much love, since they hardly know each other, but familial responsibility. And Will saying that he won't abandon Bootstrap, even though Bootstrap abandoned him - unconditional acceptance and forgiveness that you can only find between family members.
Davey Jones' expression when he opens the chest to reveal that his heart is missing... best CGI since Gollum for sure! And I wonder, does he think Jack has his heart, in the belly of the Kraken? Perhaps Davey Jones will kill the Kraken to try to get his heart back - maybe that's how they bring Jack back? Man, I just don't know if I can wait a year to find out!!!
The cannibal island sequence was even more fun for me this time around. "Time to go." "You will always remember this as the day that you *SPLASH*... Captain Jack Sparrow!"
"Look!" *BANG* "An undead monkey!" :rotfl
I think that Orlando did a MUCH better job in this one than in the first. And I really can't wait to see where they take his character in the 3rd. And I liked his pirate-y costume a lot :monkey3
After the second viewing, I am sad that the Barbossa reveal will never have the same power as it did the first time :(
BUT, the dice sequence DID make more sense to me this time around. It turns out that the players DO peak at their dice before making their bets and calling others' bets - I just didn't notice it the first time because there was so much to watch. Much like poker, which is often a game of who lies the best. Except you have to show your hand at the end, and if it is discovered that you WERE lying, you lose. Or something like that :p I think there are rules online somewhere, and you can buy a version of the game - maybe that's why they made it so confusing, so that you'd go out and buy the game to find out the rules :lol
I will be seeing this again next Friday - I'm taking my mom for her birthday - she loved the first one so much, I'm sure she'll enjoy this one as well!

Dusty, you can get it at Target. With all of the POTC merchandise, they had a game set that included chess, checkers, and pirates dice "as seen in the movie." If I had bought that before going to the movies last night, I might not have been so confused...

I love that "Look BANG an Undead Monkey" too! The more I think about it the better it is. I loved the lines that almost poked fun at the original like Will and Elizabeth correcting Becket by saying "CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow" and "Why is the rum always gone" and finally the "This will be the day you will remember as you almost SPLASH... Captain Jack Sparrow." :rotfl

Brilliant deduction!
And running with the possibility that Dalma is Davy's lost love, here's my thought for the resolution....
Since Davy Jones needs a soul -- from Will or Jack -- perhaps Dalma will give her soul to Davy, her long lost love, so they can be together forever. That way, Jack's off the hook, Davy gets his soul, and he and Dalma can be reunited for eternity...everybody wins.

Saw the movie about an hour ago, I was very dissapointed with the ending. While I thought it was a good movie the first was better.
The dice game can be played with dollar bill serial numbers as well, we players call it "bull****". You just have to keep going around in the circle besting eachothers prievous guess by either a higher number or the amount of a kind until someone thinks that there is no way that there could be that many between all the bills and calls bull****. If all the numbers are out there then he gets everyone's dollars if he is cought lying then he has to give that amount to every player.
The game is fun as hell, we always play it at the bar.

She must be worth 99 souls (well... in case he still IS looking for those souls.)
EDIT: Wait, this doesn't matter anymore since I remember at the end of the movie when Jack was swallowed up, Jones said the score was settled.
I get the feeling we're gonna feel a LOT of sympathy for Jones in the next movie. First of all, he's likely to be under the rule of the EIT Co. now. They'll force him to do stuff he doesn't care to do. By then end of the movie, maybe dieing (if his true love makes him finally happy) will be a relief. And of course, it'd be Will who destroys the heart since he made that oath to free his father yadda yadda yadda. And geez, is Norrington now a certified POTC villain now? That was quite the rotten thing to do? Of course, he only wanted to regain his honor.

Yeah I think we will see a lot more of Jones in the next movie and it should make him a more tragic character by the end. The groundwork is certainly there.
Norrington's turn surprised me as well, and I'm sure he will be a villian right up until the end... Hell, he might just stay a villian... knowing what happened to him last time. He'll probably do anything to keep his reinstated commission, including killing Will, Elizabeth or Sparrow....

This is the Empire Strikes Back of the Pirates films and it does it's job well. I'm super excited to see the next one and I recommend this movie to any fan of adventure films. Every last freak should see it!! :D
I wholeheartedly agree. This movie has everything and doesn't stop to tell you about the first movie and what is going on. Otherwise you will miss stuff like "Hello Puppet" and other nods to the first film. You have to figure it out and be a fan of the first flick. This movie does not talk down to the audience and for the first time I actually felt the cliffhanger was completely satisfying. Best movie so far of the summer and is the one to beat, and I don't mean numbers because that doesn't matter to me. Now where is my GG bust of Davey Jones?

I definitely agree that the EIT Co. will be the real bad guys of the series...and Barbossa and Jones will end up being sympathetic by the end. I mean, they're all pirates in the end...and pirates are cool.

Seen DMC twice,,who is Tia Dalma?
Tia Dalma is the voodoo lady. She's a great character.
I am in total shock at how well this movie is playing in theaters, across the board. I mean I knew it would be huge, but this is INSANE. Estimated $132 mil in the first weekend :eek
And it may just beat that estimate, as I'm thinking the Sunday take will be larger than expected - just judging from the main theater in my area (Sherman Oaks Galleria) - ALL the shows are sold out for the entire day today. I'm really interested in seeing what the drop-off is for next weekend. Could this be the film that will dethrone Titanic?? It's all about long-term performance, and next weekend will tell the tale. It's entirely likely that there will be a HUGE drop-off, and if so, it won't beat the total record. But if it holds strong - at least $60-$70 mil next weekend - look out Titanic! Also, it looks like Superman Returns made a mistake by not beating POTC to a UK opening. Even with World Cup fever going strong, DMC will most likely set records over there.
The key is that it is attracting pretty much every demographic. From 10-year olds to 80-year olds, male and female, rich and poor. It boggles the mind that one film could appeal to SO many people... you can be sure that all the studio execs are paying very close attention, and this weekend will be studied closely for years to come. Although it is true that opening weekend numbers are not the be all, end all of box office, in today's film business, they are pretty important. Again, next weekend will tell the true tale - and I'm pretty sure that I won't be the only one seeing it again next weekend :D

Man that Transformers trailer was lame. PotC 2 will most likely be the biggest film of the year. However Titanic had legs like no other movie in the blockbuster age. It was in the top ten for a few months. Most films drop 50% the 2nd weekend, but I don't see that happening with PotC2. There aren't a lot of challengers out there like PotC was for Superman.
I don't think Cap'n Jack has much to fear from Little Man or You, Me & Dupree.

just for the heck of it I went and checked imdb. Titanic was the number one film for 15 weeks. I don't think any movie is going to touch that record for a long time, if ever.
SPOILERS BELOW!
Saw it last night. Verdict: As good as the original, loved the film.
It wasn't 100% perfect, but certainly was 99% perfect for me.
And that is only on my first viewing - I'll see it 2-3 more times, and
my opinion may change on it - for the better.
Likes:
Jack's entrance into the film. Laughed my butt off!
CGI on all the pirates. Amazing! Looked totally photorealistic.
CGI on the Kraken! Wow! Made the Watcher in the Water look like a sea monkey.
Cliffhanger ending - will be neat to see how it all plays out.
Entrance of the character in the last scene of the film. #3 is gonna be fantastic.
Dislikes:
Seemed kind of "forced" at some points, but I just can't put my finger on it.
Lack of a STRONG villain. Geoffrey Rush was better playing/acting off of
Johnny Depp. Davey Jones hardly had any interaction with him, and as a
result, the main hero/villain dynamic didn't feel nearly as strong to me.
Having to wait a damned year to see how all this plays out! I wants it NOW!
Scene after the credits - wasted my time waiting for THAT!?
Final Verdict: Well worth seeing multiple times on the big screen, and I can't
wait to see the 3rd installment of the trilogy (or more if you believe the rumors)
For contrast:
I saw Superman the night before, and I liked it, but I wouldn't see it again
in the theater. I'd rent it happily, but that is it. Brandon did a GREAT job
as Superman, and I thought Kevin Spacey also did a GREAT job as Lex, BUT
the story was not fast moving, and seemed a bit long for me. I did like the
land scheme Lex was working on/creating, but Superman needs to now go
up against a SUPER villain. Bizarro. Brainiac. Doomsday. Someone or
something with superpowers. so he could have a nemesis to have a knock
down drag out brawl with. If they do that, I'll be ready to pay to see it.
Parting shot:
Think of this o' geeky brethren:
Spidey 3
PotC 3
Transformers
Ghost Rider
Iron Man
Fantastic Four And The Silver Surfer
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (threw in just for kicks)
The Bourne Ultimatum
Ratatouille
Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
Underdog (who knows - could be good?)
30 Days Of Night
His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass
The Spiderwick Chronicles
The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
Soul Caliber
Sin City 2
Resident Evil: Extinction
All in the same year!
It is gonna be an awesome year to look forward too!

Titanic made so damn much money for 2 reasons...
1. All those damn romantic loving teenage girls went to see the movie over, and over, and over
2. Those damn horny teenage boys got to see some boobies in a PG-13 movie!
How the bloody hell did they get away with a PG-13 anyway? It had nuidity (though not in a sexual situation I guess) a F-Bomb, couple S-Bombs, a fair deal of violence, horrifying siuations, and LOADS upon loads of dead bodies floating in the water? That movie does not deserve to be #1, and sadly, it's gonna take TOO much money to knock it of its super high pedestal.

I ended up calling the theater wednesday night and wrangling an answer out of a man over the phone that it was thursday, even though the time on the ticket clearly indicated that night. I said I was told very clearly to come wednesday and that's what I believed for two weeks and planned my schedule around and that I didn't appreciate false information. Any employee should've been able to answer my question correctly and inform me that, despite what the ticket said, the show was considered thursday evening.
I've seen the movie twice now. Once at the midnight, the other saturday afternoon....wanted to go back friday but most of the theaters were selling out quickly.
We had a full house at the midnight show. I must have seen fifty or more people wearing Pirates shirts. A girl that sat next to us wore the same shirt design as mine except mine was Jack and hers was Will. Some people were wearing pirate costumes. The audience was insanely enthusiastic. When the logo came up, people cheered. With Jack's entrance, people went nuts. People laughed and gasped and went wild at the very end of the movie.
I actually came out of theater with somewhat of a mixed reaction because my first thoughts on it were how incredibly fast paced it was. I was eager to see it again because it was so hard to catch everything. I liked it the first time, and loved it the second because I was able to pick up on the little things and the movie didn't seem nearly as rushed. I'm going again on friday with two of my other friends. That will be my third time and their first, unless I get the insatiable urge to go again one night this week.
I'm confident at this point that the Pirates trilogy will become my favorite trilogy, passing both LOTR and the original SW.

That's a pretty bold statement Josette, but that's also totally cool! I don't think anything could top the original SW trilogy for me since I was a wide-eyed kid when that came out. So there will always be that nostalgia. Also, the LOTR trilogy was just so well done for the kid still lurking in the adult I am now. That said, I can see how kids now may end up loving the Pirates films the way I loved the original SW films. Depp has created such a brilliantly funny and memorable screen character.
Oh, and for the record, as much as I love the SW trilogy, when I saw Raiders Of The Lost Ark for the first time at the ripe old age of 8 in 1981, I had never seen anything more fun...and might back that up even to this day. If I had to choose just ONE action/adventure...fantasy, fun, thrill-ride of a movie, it would be Raiders. That one will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart!

I didn't become a SW fan until I was thirteen....when it comes to choosing between SW and LOTR, I have a really hard time. The sentimental part of me wants to say SW because a lot of my happy memories have SW involved in them, but LOTR really set the bar for excellent fantasy film making on almost all levels: story wise, character wise, writing wise... I like them both a whole, whole lot. Admittedly, I've become disenchanted with SW because I don't like the prequels. At all.
POTC....I'm not sure if I can explain exactly why I love it so much more than the others.... I think on one level, it's comparable to the original SW for me because I love so many of the characters, just like I did with SW. LOTR had great characters but for some reason I didn't get attached to them. I cared about them while I watched the films but they didn't linger the way the POTC & original SW characters did. And frankly I had a hunger for new, fantastic adventures movies that LOTR didn't didn't completely sate, and the prequels almost made me lose my appetite. Pirates of the Caribbean was like a refreshing glass of water (or rum, if you prefer ;) ) on a hot summer day.

And also, about that photoshopped picture. First thing I ever saw that was off was the skin. Just looks odd to me. Then I knew I should look for more subtle mistakes. Then I saw the compass.
