Anyone else want to see the profanity spouting mutilator of Shakespearian dialect Al Swearengen from HBO's Deadwood made into a talking 1/6th scale figure?Calamity Jane and E.B.Farnum also spout hilarious dialog on the show too, they would be great as well.I'd like to see SS return to the wild west, and there's no better place than Deadwood to start.

I watched Deadwood the other day and the only thing I got out of it was how stupid and forced all the swearing in it was. :emperor But I agree that they would make great figs.

The swearing seems a little overboard but if you watch the show from the first episode you get use to the swearing and the story line is so good. (In the bonus features on season 1 the director explains why there is a lot of cussing.) Anyway... I would much rather have a 1/4 Swearengin rather than a 12" talking.

so what's up w/ the series finale for Deadwood? the episode tonight was kinda anticlimactic and i thought there was supposed to be 2 two hour movies to wrap it up, or something like that. but there was no mention of them at the end.

Did they even use those swear words back then?

"Stupid and forced"? It flows like sweet wine.

*Edited due to Andy's post. :D

I also felt like the series finale was a bit anticlimactic. I believe the two movies will be shown next year.

I also felt like the series finale was a bit anticlimactic.

I feel the same.

Deadwood has had some of the best writing and acting I've seen in any movie or tv program ever, though it can be tough to follow at times, usually takes me at least a second view to catch all the nuances.

I'd love a 1/6 Al, and a Farnsworth figure to verbally abuse the Richardson figure. :D

Give me Brad Dourif in anything.

And I'm always up for more Western themed figures!

Dourif's really great. Too bad he was so underused this season. And he wasn't even in the finale!

Maybe we'll get a Wormtongue figure someday.

Grima's on my list, that's for sure. He and Saruman are a set in my mind.

Actually they didn't use those words back then, at least not nearly as much as the show conveys. However, words like "crap" and "b*tch" were among the harshest swear words of the time, and the residents of Deadwood did indeed curse up a storm and were considered extremely vulgar (in fact, I believe it was so bad that some residents tried to pass an ordinance to stop the profanity!). The creator of the show decided it was necessary to use the harshest words of today in his writing to get this point across (they originally intended to use more accurate period profanity, but is just came across silly and didn't have nearly the same effect), which I have to admit is a tactic I agree with. Even though the jargon of the show might not be completely accurate, I totally understand and appreciate why they did it that way, and it doesn't bother me at all.

On another note, I definitely agree the finale was anticlimactic.... But as far as I know, they do still have 2 full-length HBO films planned to 'wrap up' Deadwood, so I can understand why they wouldn't want to rush anything just to give us a big bang ending.... I just hope they follow through with the movies and don't leave us hanging! I'm gonna miss that show. :(

I just wanted to add to Andy's excellent this expanded explanation from the 'Wik:

From its debut Deadwood has drawn attention for its extremely explicit, modern profanity, especially among the more coarse characters. It is a deliberate anachronism by the creator with a twofold intent. As Milch has explained in several interviews and on the DVD commentary tracks, originally the characters were to use period slang and swear words. Such words, however, were based heavily on the era's deep religious roots and tended to be more blasphemous than scatological. Instead of being shockingly crude (in keeping with the tone of a frontier mining camp), the results sounded downright comical (Milch says it "..made everyone sound like Yosemite Sam.")

Instead, it was decided the show would use current profanity so the words would affect modern audiences as the blasphemous ones did back in the 1870's. In fact, the character of Mr. Wu seems to know only three words of English — the mangled name of one character ("Swedgin"), "San Francisco," and his favorite derogatory term for those he dislikes, "c$$ksucka."

The other intent of the frequency of the swearing was to signal the audience of the camp's lawlessness in much the same way that the original inhabitants used it to show they were very aware they were living outside "civil society."

The word "f#ck" was said 43 times in the first hour of the show. (as reported by MTV Canada, 2006)

And keep in mind, this was the frontier. These weren't "explorers". These were criminals, con-artists, backwoods men, etc. People went to the Western territories for 3 main reasons: 1.) to disappear, or on the run, 2.) to try to escape a life of poverty in the "civilised world" or 3.) live the kind of hedonistic life style that was outlawed back East. So, it is completely in character for these people to talk and act the way they do.

But, come on... when you first saw Deadwood.. who didn't think that the name Swearengen was a non-too-subtle jab at the dialogue :rotfl But that's the real historical name. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction :emperor
